WELCOME From the President of Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society W elcom e to our Society's performance of M el Brooks' hilarious and irreverent musical "The Producers" - a first for the R&R and a first for Dublin audiences. The R&R is proud that since its foundation, ninety-six years ago, it has presented many Irish premieres here at the Gaiety Theatre including such favourites as "Fiddler on the Roof", "M y Fair Lady", "Camelot", "Hello Dolly", "Gigi" and indeed others in the earlier years.

"The Producers" is a far cry from our shows of last year - the melodious "M erry W idow " and the whimsical "lolanthe" - but w e like accepting the challenge of new shows which, apart from bringing new entertainm ent to our audiences, demonstrates the wide talents of our players.

I especially welcome our Associate Mem bers - people who, while not necessarily being stage performers, nevertheless wish to be closely linked to this grand old Dublin institution affectionately known as "The R&R". New York, 1959 and it's the opening night of Max Bialystock's new play "Funny Boy - A Musical Version o f Hannlet" (Opening Night).

It's a truly dreadful show: so bad, in fact, that it closes at intermission! Poor Max can scarcely believe the disastrous turn his career has taken. A fter all, he was once revered as the King o f Broadway but now finds himself playing to a group o f down-and-outs who he serenades w ith tales of his past achievements and his future ambitions to return to form (King o f Broadway)

to the books. Leo meekly agrees and begins to sift through the plethora of numbers but uncovers Max's inept bookkeeping skills there's $2000 unaccounted for! Now it's Max's turn to lose it a little and he begs Leo to cook the books for him: "Look at me", he pleads: once the King of Broadway, now reduced to wearing cardboard belts and romancing little old ladies...

The next day as Max lies despondent under a sea o f woeful reviews, a mousy accountant by the name o f Leo Bloom arrives to the office to inspect his books. Leo quickly and efficiently sets to work but is interrupted when one of Max's female 'investors' arrives... Max needs some privacy. Quickly. So, Leo is sent scurrying into the bathroom to hide until she leaves. His 'investor,' who, at first glance appears a darling lady of considerable years, quickly turns out to be a raving nyphomaniac whose favourite phrase is "Hold Me, Touch M e" and who also possesses an insatiable appetite for sex games like the subtly-titled "virgin milkmaid and the well-hung stable boy." Max, feigning exhaustion, calls a halt to proceedings for the tim e being but gladly takes her cheque. Being the darling she is, she has already made it payable to the name of Max's new show, the as yet un-produced, "Cash..."

Leo reluctantly agrees and gets back to work and then notices another anomaly in the books: "under the right circumstances, a producer could actually make more money with a flop than he can with a hit... The IRS isn't interested in the show that flopped: You could've raised a million dollars, put on your $100,000 flop, and kept the rest!" Max is suddenly all ears and starts to hatch a plan that will buy him his meal ticket back to riches!

Meanwhile, Leo's exile in the to ile t has afforded him some tim e to daydream. When he emerges he enthuses over his childhood fantasy of becoming a theatre producer. Things seems to be going rather sm oothly until Max inadvertently touches Leo's "blue blanket," a com fort crutch and hang up from his infancy: histrionics and panic attacks abound as Leo gets more hysterical and Max becomes ever more bewildered at this grown man screaming in fro n t of him. Eventually he manages to calm his accountant and encourages him to go back

"Step 1: We find the worst play ever written.

Step 2: We hire the worst director in town.

Step 3: We raise tw o million dollars...One for me, one for you. There's a lot of little old ladies out there! Step 4: We hire the worst actors in New York and open on Broadway and before you can say Step 5, we close on Broadway, take our tw o million, and go to Rio." Leo just can't bring himself to be so dishonest and, despite Max's pleadings (1/Ve Can Do It) returns to his job at Whitehall and Marks. Back at his desk he slips into his reverie again (/ Wanna Be a Producer) and finally realises how dismal his life has been up 'til now. Defiantly, he quits, returns to Max and the tw o set about brining their plan of riches and stardom to fruition.

Overnight, they commence their quest for some exceptionally dreadful writing and as they trudge through some of the worst

material to ever grace the stage they stumble across a particularly dire piece of work: Franz Liebkind's loving tribute to his hero, Springtime f o r Hitler: A Gay Romp with A dolf and Eva at Berchtesgaden. The tw o waste no tim e and head straight for the ex-Nazi-cum-playwright's home to secure the rights to the play where they discover him on the roof o f his tenem ent talking to his birds and reminiscing about the grand old days [In Old Bavaria). Leo and Max are forced to sit through Franz's ranting in order to get him to sign the contract - which he will only do once the pair swear allegiance to Adolf Hitler by, firstly singing his favourite tune (Der Guten Tag Hop Clop) and, secondly by saying the Sacred Siegfried Oath.

and his 'assistant' Carmen Ghia decline the offer to direct because of the serious subject m atter of the play. They feel shows should be more pretty, more witty, more... gay, (Keep It Gay) but finally concede, provided the ending be changed to allow the Germans win World War II. Some champagne and a celebratory conga line later Leo and Max return to the office where they meet a Swedish bombshell who wants to audition for their next play. Her name is Ulla Inga Hansen Benson Yansen Tallen Hallen Svaden Swanson.

That's her first name (Ulla, for short) She auditions for them (When You've Got It, Flaunt It) and they hire her immediately - strictly for artistic reasons o f course!

"Good? This guy couldn't direct you to the

So now the quest for a suitable director begins in earnest and Leo and Max set their sights on Roger De Bris, the worst director in New York and a flamboyant homosexual to boot! At first, Roger

THE STOIY CONTINUES. . .

Act 2 opens in IVIax's office which has now been transfornned into a vision of white, thanks to Ulla's hard work during the intermission. Leo has finally succumbed to Ulla's charms and, as he breaks his own rules o f resisting the "urge to merge," the tw o begin to fall in love (That Face). Max, who walks in on them , sings the reprise of the song not about love this tim e, rather the perfect form o f Ulla's rear end!

Meanwhile, the search for the worst acting 'tale nt' on Manhattan continues as a succession of second-rate Hitler auditionees, each more inept than the next, fails to hit the mark. Roger appears to be losing the will to live while Franz is slowly becoming more and more outraged by the "little mama's boys" who are trying to emulate his hero. There's nothing for it but for Franz to show them how it's done [Habe Sie Gehort das Deutsche Band?) but finds himself cast in the role when Max exclaims "That's our Hitler!"

Finally opening night for 'Springtime for Hitler' arrives {It's Bad Luck to Say Good Luck on Opening Night) and everyone waits w ith baited breat.

Moments before curtain-up, though, Franz falls down the stairs and breaks his leg leaving only one person to fill his army boots: cue Roger De Bris. As the band strikes up and the overture begins. Max and Leo stare on in eager anticipation for their failure to unfold (Springtime f o r Hitler).

As bad luck would have it though, their sure-fire flop turns out to be a musical masterpiece of satire and wit, making Roger's outrageous and over-the-top performance the talk of the town.

"The show was lousy and long, we did everything wrong - where did we go right?"

Back at the office. Max and Leo stare agog at some o f the best reviews they have ever read (Where Did We Go Right?). Roger and Carmen burst into the room on a sea o f champagne and gaiety to congratulate them on the biggest smash

to hit Broadway in a long time, only to find them fighting over the accounting books. Franz then bursts in too, but his is not so happy: outraged by Roger's camp portrayal of his beloved Fuhrer he means to kill them all but is stopped just in the nick of tim e by three policemen who hear the commotion and take Franz, Max and the books down to the station. Leo, however, has managed to hide long enough for the police to miss him and is quickly convinced by Ulla that he would be far better off in Rio with her and the money than at home in jail - so they grab the $2,000,000 and scarper!

"Got to Sing Sing...!"

In prison. Max receives a postcard from Leo and feels completely deceived by his partner. In his big number. Betrayed, he then recounts the whole show - including intermission. At his trial. Max is found not just guilty, but "incredibly guilty" and faces many years behind bars for his defrauding of so many little old ladies. Leo and Ulla arrive at the eleventh hour, though, and try to convince the judge that Max is, in fact, a good man who would never (willingly) hurt anyone (Til Him). The judge is touched by this and decides not to separate the two, instead sending both Leo and Max, along w ith Franz to Sing Sing prison for 5 years.

So what better way to spend their hours behind bars than rehearsing their new musical "Prisoners of Love" which goes to Broadway when they are pardoned by the Governor for their services to music. Leo and Max continue to produce Broadway musicals and, at the end, the tw o fullyfledged kings of Broadway walk off into the sunset (Leo & Max). After the curtain call, there is one last song as the cast tells the audience that the Broadway experience is over for now and that it's tim e to get out GoodbyeW!

Something in Roger De Bris' lines in The Producers seems to echo a sentiment held very dear to the heart of Mel Brooks. After all, there is something about comedies that keeps audiences coming back for more and although Hollywood has produced some true comic greats over the years, one distinct name stands out against the rest.

M el Brooks, born Melvin Kaminsky, in 1926, in Brooklyn, York, was the son of a Russian Jewish family and grew to be known as the grand master of movie satire. His unique blend of farcical comedy and manic energy made him w ith o u t doubt one of Hollywood's most successful producers: Indeed, his track record in the industry is astonishing as is one of only a handful of people to scoop an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award. While he dabbled in more serious genres for a tim e - the results of which brought him the kind o f reviews endured by Max Bialystock after Funny Boy flopped - he is best know to us for bringing to the screen such comedy classics as Get Smart, Blazing Saddles, Young Franl<enstein and Space Balls.

One of his most successful projects to-date (he still shows no signs of stopping!) has been The Producers, which started life as a screen play based on his own dealings w ith Broadway producers and then led, in 1968, to his feature-length film debut starring stage legend Zero Mostel as M ax and a youthful Gene W ilder as Leo. The film was not an instant success though and was only distributed after Peter Sellers saw Brooks' masterpiece and intervened w ith Embassy Pictures who declined to release it because of its 'bad taste'.

It was just as well he did step in as it scooped the Oscar for Best Screen Play and Best Supporting Actor (Gene Wilder) at the 1968 Academy Awards! In fact Sellers was such a fan he even went on Michael Parkinson's BBC show some years later in a German helmet reciting the "Hitler was a better painter than Churchill" speech.

Following the original film's success. Brooks then went on to adapt the screenplay for stage in 2000 and brought us the highly successful Broadway musical which swept the boards winning a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards in 2001. Starring Nathan Lane as M ax and M atthew Broderick as Leo this show quickly becanne the hottest ticket in tow n and spawned a number of national tours, a sell-out West End run and a subsequent remake o f the film in 2005 which also starred Lima Thurman as the knock-out Ulla and Will Ferrell as our deranged play w right Franz.

Nowadays he takes life a little easier after playing Uncle Phil in the hit NBC series M ad About You during the 90s and appears regularly as voice talent in animated movies. Still, with his enviable talent for juggling roles as director, producer, lead actor and writer, one never know what he'll come out with next - or whom it might offend!

Noel graduated in 1997 from the Samuel Beckett School, Trinity College w ith a BA (Mod) Honours Degree and subsequently an MA in Drama and Theatre Studies in 2003 Noel's credits include The Merry Widow and Die Fledermaus in the National Concert Hall. He has been very successful at the Waterford International Festival o f Light Opera winning the 'Best Professional Director Award' seven times with Macl< & l\/labei, Chicago, Cabaret, Barnum,Chess and the Irish of premiere of Evita for Arthur's Team. He also directed the premieres of A Slice o f Saturday Night and the world premieres of Rebecca Storm's Hollywood Ladies and Brian O'Reilly's Buskin' at the Tivoli Theatre. In 2006 Noel directed the Irish premiere o i Seussical the Musical for the award-winning Teachers Musical Society For television he devised/directed Different Dreams for RTE and staged The Last Night o f The Proms/ Viennese Night for the Bank of Ireland Proms. His recent credits include Someone Who'll Watch Over Me by Frank McGuinness, Assassins by Stephen Sondheim at The Samuel Beckett Theatre, Cinderella & Jack and the Beanstalk at the Gaiety, Fiddler on the Roof Oklahoma!

In June 2004 Noel was invited to direct The Importance o f Being Earnest at the Oscar Wilde 150th Celebrations in Portora, Enniskillen.

Theatre in Education Credits: Devised and directed Learning Through The Arts In Breaking The Cycle Schools for the Department o f Education in 2001. He also devised w ith Joe O'Donnell the award-winning melodrama. The Hands o f Doom for the Food Safety Promotion Board in 2004. In June 2005 he devised and directed St. Michael's House 50th Anniversary production Let's Celebrate In The Helix involving a cast of 400 students with intellectual disability. Noel recently produced and directed Honk! in The Helix, with a cast of 350 children from 15 primary schools in the Dublin Docklands area.

He has re ce ntly re tire d fro m tea ch in g in th e FCJ School in B un clod y w h e re o v e r th e years he established a "school o f m u sic" w ith o ve r 250 stu de n ts playing in t w o very large ensem bles.

Gearoid started c o n d u c tin g in RTE o ve r 30 years ago and has p e rfo rm e d w it h RTECO and RTENSO on television, in c o n c e rt halls, and even in th e rain w ith a 6,000 strong c h o ir in Lansdow ne Road.

In 1990 Gearoid devised and co n tin u es to present and c o n d u c t each year th e acclaim ed The Irish Times/RTE series "M usic in th e C lassroom " w h ich intro d uces m usic to 30,000 Irish c h ild re n annually, w it h 24 perfo rm a n ce s at th e N atio n al C oncert Hall in D ublin and in m a jo r venues aro u n d Ireland. T he p ro g ra m m e is d e veloped in c o n ju n c tio n w ith RTE, The Irish Times and th e D e p a rtm e n t o f Education.

Gearoid has c o n d ucte d th e N ational Youth Orchestra o f Ireland since its in c e p tio n and has never missed a c o n ce rt in nearly 30 years. The R athm ines and Rathgar music so ciety has had s im ila r service.

For th e last 10 years he has co n du cte d th e Cross B order Orchestra o f Ireland (including a se ll-o u t c o n ce rt in Carnegie Hall) and he organises and conducts th e H alleluja h Christmas Concert a t th e Point T h e atre w ith o v e r 9,000 ch ild re n singing.

Jackie has a distin g u ish ed career as a p erfo rm e r, musician, dire ctor, ch o rus d ire c to r and teacher. Garry studied with Dr Veronica Dunne at the Leinster School of Music and at the RIAM with Professor Paul Deegan.

He appeared in Mahogany Songspiel ('Opera Theatre Company, Dublin Theatre Festival) and In Company With Sondheim fSceanario, National Concert Hall). He has played many roles including Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof (Gaiety Theatre), Ramades in Risen People (Gaiety Theatre), Emile de Becque in South Pacific (Gaiety Theatre), Joe Kellor in All M y Sons (Andrews Lane Theatre), Eddie Carbone in A View fro m the Bridge (Andrews Lane Theatre), Sam Byck in Assassins (The Beckett Theatre), Khruschev in JFK (Olympia Theatre), Dancairo in Carmen (National Concert Hall), The Man in Buskin (Tivoli Theatre), Nathan Detroit in Guys & Dolls (Gaiety Theatre), Prof.

Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady (Gaiety Theatre) and Honore Lachailles in Gigi (Gaiety Theatre).

With the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company he played Poo-Bah in their production of The Mikado and Wilfred Shadbolt in The Yeomen o f the Guard (Sadler's Wells Theatre, UK).

Television and radio work include The Late Late Show, Live at 3 and Theatre Nights. He also appeared in the BBC productions of The Mikado and The Yeomen o f the Guard.

MICHAEL EVANS -

Leo Bloom

A native of Dublin, Michael has had the great fortune of working with many musical societies throughout Ireland.

Previous roles include The Emcee in Cabaret, Nanky Poo in The Hot Mikado, Bobby Child in Crazy For You, Junior in On Your Toes, Pippin in Pippin, Paul in A Chorus Line and Molina in Kiss Of The Spider Woman, which he performed at the WIFLO in 1999 earning him Best Male Performer.

Other awards include Best Supporting Male WIFLO and seven National AIMS Awards.

After a five year break, Michael returned to the stage over the Christmas period 2004/5 to play The Scarecrow in Festival Productions' The Wizard Of Oz at the National Concert Hall, a roll he reprised the following year. Since then he has played Stephen/Tony in Copacabana with New Lyric Operatic Society at the Opera House Belfast, Don Lockwood in Singing in the Rain w ith Flaggy Lane at the Theatre Royal, Waterford, Rooster in Annie and Cornelius HackI in Hello Do//y with Festival Productions at the National Concert Hall and most recently Jimmy Smith in the Irish premiere of Thoroughly Modern Millie at the Civic Theatre Dublin.

Michael appeared as Billy Crocker in the 2007 R&R production of Anything Goes at the National Concert Hall.

Garry directed The Yeomen o f the Guard in 2004 and co足 directed the R&R's 90th Birthday Celebration Concert in 2003, having previously directed The Mikado (2001) and The Pirates o f Penzance (2002), all at the National Concert Hall. He co-hosted From Romberg to Rodgers at the NCH in 2005 and his role as Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof at the Gaiety Theatre in 2006 won him critical acclaim. He was Director of The Gondoliers at the National Concert Hall which was an astounding success and recently starred in the very successful run of Who's Afraid o f Virginia Woolf at the new Mill Theatre in the Dundrum Centre. Garry appeared as 'Moonface Martin' in Anything Goes at the NCH and appeared as 'Baron Zeta' in The Merry Widow at the Gaiety. Most recently he directed the R&R's production of lolanthe in the National Concert Hall last November.

Mezzo-soprano Kate Engelstad recently completed her Master of Music degree in performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.

Prior to this study, she earned her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Redlands in Southern California.

Adam has had a really hectic year, and that is saying something - from the violent Baddie, Spyder in Jekyll and Hyde to the delightfully mischievous Lord Chancellor in Last seasons lolanthe, While still finding time to play tw o of the Ghosts in Festival Productions A Christmas Carol, All at the NCH.

Over the years she has been fortunate to perform in Guys and Dolls, Jesus Christ Superstar and Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella (for which she understudied the title role). Kate starred in the title role in Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas and originated the title roles in two operas The Beautiful Bridegroom by Dan Shore and Peter und Melusine by Leah Wilson.

So how did I get from the mild mannered environs of a G&S Classic to playing the cross-dressing manic Director of Frightful Flops??- You tell M el! - but it's great fun and it brings a hint of darkness to this modern musical.

Kate's experience also includes excerpt scenes from operas including the role of Hansel in Hansel and Gretel and the role of Estella in Great Expectations.

Kate enjoyed performing in Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society's most recent production of lolanthe and is thrilled to be playing Ulla in The Producers'.

Adam has been fortunate to perform along side many great performers, Colm Wilkinson, Samamtha Mumba, Peter Corry,Twink, even Dustin the Turkey.

Next on his busy schedule, Adam will be playing Don Alhambra in Festival Productions Gondoliers both here in the NCH and on tour in Buxton for the International G&S Festival. He will then perform in both The IVIikado and Gondoliers for Jim Molloy Productions here in the Gaiety in the Autumn, and to round off the year Adam will once again don a 'frock' to terrify the kids as 'The Wicked Witch of the West' in the NCH for Christmas.

Brendan started on stage w ith the M oat Club Drama Group in Naas, and only tentatively dipped his toe into musicals after moving to Clane. Over the last 8 years o r so, he has appeared in many shows w ith Clane Musical Society. He has also worked w ith Pioneer Musical & Dramatic Society and Keable Young Generation. Last year, he had the great pleasure o f rejoining Pioneers for th e ir 100th Anniversary Celebrations in the National Concert Hall fo r a bit o f "Les M is" Favourite musical roles include: Jerry/Daphne in Some Like It Hot!, Ko-ko in H ot l\/lil<ado (AIMS Best Comedian Award 2004), Doolittle in M y Fair Lady, Sergeant o f Police in The New Pirates O f Penzance, and Gerald in M e And M y Girl.

In drama, Brendan has performed in numerous plays from Shakespeare and M oliere to Chekhov, O'Casey and Miller, and has just completed a 2-year stint as w rite r and director o f th e annual pantom im e at the M oat Theatre, Naas.

This is Brendan's first show w ith the R&R, and he is tru ly enjoying every m inute of it! He would like to thank the production team, cast and everyone in the R&R for th e ir genuinely warm welcome and wishes them all the best for w h a t promises to be a great antidote to the "R" word...

Carmen Ghia

A native o f Birr, Co. Offaly, th e Performing Arts has always been an intrinsic com ponent o f Christiaan's character.

Christiaan studied Performing Arts w ith Bull Alley Theatre Training College in Dublin. A fter playing Seymour in Birr Stage Guild's Little Shop o f Horrors (2005), Christiaan moved to Dublin fo r a position w ith th e Office of Public Works in Farmleigh House in the Phoenix Park where he currently works. His theatrical experiences continued playing Sasha in Rathmines & Rathgar's Fiddler on the Roof (2005), Francis Fryer in Pioneer Musical Society's Calamity Jane (2006), Lank Hawkins in Crazy For You (2007), also w ith the Pioneers, and chorus of Glasnevin Musical Society's Chess (2007).

A fter returning to college and completing a Post-Graduate in Public Relations w ith the Public Relations Institute of Ireland in 2008, Christiaan also works as a freelance publicist w ith Zoetrope, one o f Ireland's leading arts PR and Communications companies. He has worked on campaigns fo r Dun Laoghaire Festival o f W orld Cultures, AIB Street Performance W o rld Championships and CoisCeim Dance Theatre.

His first foray into playw riting resulted in The Crown Jewels, a subject he became intrigued w ith w hile working in Dublin Castle. He is co-w riting it w ith Shawn Sturnick. It is to recieve its premiere at the Dublin Fringe Festival in September o f this year.

FERGAL DOYLE -

German Storm Trooper

Fergal, 21, is no stranger to th e stage. This is his second show w ith th e R&R, having been in th e Peers Chorus in lolanthe last year. Growing up in Wexford, he has perform ed a num ber o f musical roles including Tevye in The Fiddler On The Roof(F.C.i. Bunclody), Lun Tha in The King and I (Gorey M.S.), Barnaby Tucker in Hello Dolly (Carnew M.S.), and Bill Calhoun in Kiss me Kate (F.C.J. Bunclody).

Fergal studied music at F.C.J. Bunclody where he played flu te w ith th e school orchestra under th e direction of Gearoid Grant. He has played w ith this orchestra in The Helix, the National Concert Hall, and in Woonsocket, Rhode Island among many o th e r destinations.

He was a m em ber o f The Carlow Young Artists Choir perform ing Vivaldi's Gloria and Faure s Requiem scoreless, in num erous churches, cathedrals and com petitions across Ireland and in Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, University o f Toronto and before Pope Benedict in St. Peter s Basilica, The Vatican.

Fergal was a cham pion Irish dancer from age four, and danced th ro u g h o u t Ireland, Europe and America in many shows and com petitions into his late teens.

Fergal wishes the very best o f luck to the cast and would like to extend his gratitude to the production team and com m ittee fo r all th e ir tim e and patience.

NATALIE LEONARDHold Me, Touch M e Natalie has been singing since the age o f 16. Having enjoyed drama at a young age, she played lead roles in school musicals such as the title role in Annie g et your Gun and Fagan in Oliver.

She joined the Pioneer Musical and Dramatic Society in November 2006 starring in th e ir Christmas Panto Jack and The Beanstalk as Princess Jill. This appearance was soon follow ed by th e Role o f June in Alan Bennett's one act play Say Something Happened. However, her biggest roles to date have been the role of 'Polly Baker' in Pioneers production o f Crazy f o r You (2007), Geraldine in Stella by Starlight by Brendan Farrell and Tzeitel in Fiddler on the Roof (2008).

Natalie is also a m em ber of the Drama Group 'City Limits' having received tw o Best Actress Awards in 2007 Drama League of Ireland Festivals for her role as 'Daphne' in the one act play Over M y Dead Body by Pat Baker.

Natalie has also appeared w ith various bands around the Dublin circuit and released numerous dance tracks.
