A Welcome to You From the President of the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society It is my privilege, on behalf of the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society, to welcome you to the National Concert Hall where our Society is continuing to celebrate its 90th birthday. To stand the test of time is one of the criteria that defines a product of high quality. To have lasted 90 years in the precarious world of show business and to be as popular as always, surely speaks volumes for the ‘product’ known affectionately as “the R&R”. Our Society is aware that it is operating in the professional theatre world and consequently to flourish in such an environment, it is necessary to strive towards the highest standards of production and performance all of which requires constant dedication by our m em bers. It is of som e interest that of the Society’s 273 productions to date, 165 or just over 60%, were Gilbert and Sullivan operas. This being so, it was only natural that the year of our special birthday would include a concert celebrating the wit and music of Gilbert and Sullivan. We trust you will enjoy tonight’s concert which is our tribute to Mr. Gilbert and Mr. Sullivan whose extraordinary talents have been so m uch part of our Musical Society. We look forward to entertaining you for at least another 90 years!

Ml'- Qilbert,Mf- Sullivan andMi^- T)’Oijly Carte Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) W. s. Gilbert once described Arthur Sullivan as “imcomparabiy the Greatest English musician of the ag e”. Besides contributing witty operatic parodies and a string of effervescent melodies to the Savoy operas, he wrote, am ongst other works, cantatas, oratorios, concert overtures, incidental music to plays, num erous songs and a grand opera. He was the conductor of the Leeds Festival for almost twenty years, a friend of royalty and a keen follower of the turf. He was knighted in 1883.

William Schw enck Gilbert (1836-1911) William Schwenck Gilbert m ade a huge contribution to making the Savoy operas what they are - witty, dry, romantic, subversive, nonsensical and very funny. He directed the first productions and often contributed towards the costum e and set designs. He also achieved m uch else - writing som e of the funniest and m ost scandalous com edies of his day, writing and illustrating those grotesque m asterpieces the Bab Ballads, and building London’s Garrick Theatre, am ongst other things. He was knighted in 1907.

Richard D’Oyly Carte and his Opera Company Richard D’Oyly Carte was born on 3rd May 1844 in London. His father, Richard Carte, was a flautist and musical instrument manufacturer. The “D’Oyly”, a Norman French nam e, cam e from his m other’s side of the family. He remains a shadowy figure in the background of the Gilbert, Sullivan and Carte partnership. Little about his life or personality is known. Yet Richard D’Oyly Carte was a m an of extraordinary vision, a talented musician and his business acum en set up a com pany which m ade him a richer m an than his partners.

It was certainly courageous in a young Society like this to bodily attem pt the production of The Mikado, one of the most popular and best known o f the Gilbert & Sullivan operas; but when all due allowances are made for a first attempt, even a captious critic m ust adm it that the performance in many respects compared very favourably vi^th its many predecessors” The Irish Times

An Svening with Mr- Qilbert andMf- Sullivan That Arthur Sullivan and William S. Gilbert becam e one of the m ost successful partnerships in the history of musical theatre was due not only to their incomparable talents, but also to the astuteness and perception of Richard D’Oyly Carte, a brilliant impresario and founder of the opera com pany which still bears his nam e to this day. In 1871 Gilbert, one of England’s leading dramatists, satirists and comic writers of the Victorian era, had collaborated with Sullivan, then the country’s m ost promising young composer, on a comic opera called ‘ Thespis’. Though it was not a success. Carte saw the germ of a potentially fertile association in the work and was determined to bring the two together. While both Gilbert and Sullivan were successful individually, their major successes were in the field of comic operetta, where the synergy of Gilbert’s lyrics allied to Sullivan’s melodies created a canon of 14 worlds, which satirised the national characters of Victorian England. Even in the twenty-first century the popularity of the Savoy opera’s show little sign of diminishing, international filmmaker Mike Leigh’s very popular movie ‘Topsy Turvy’ looked at the creative process of Gilbert and Sullivan, capturing the workaholic Gilbert, writing, designing, directing and the lazy Sullivan with his Mozatian facility for completing operetta scores at the last minute. In this perform ance of Mr. Gilbert m eets Mr. Sullivan we hope to capture the magical chemistry of these two great Savoyards and interpolate som e of the m any musical gem s from their operettas. R&R W in ter Season 2 0 0 3

Ninety Years of Musical Magic! Introduction: It all started in 1913 at a meeting held in 48 Summerville Park, Rathmines Dublin. C. P. Fitzgerald, who was the young organist at that time in Rathgar's Church of the Three Patrons, wanted to establish a musical society whose m em bership would be formed from residents of the Dublin townships of Rathmines and Rathgar. Original Objectives of the R&R: The objectives of the proposed musical society were the study of, and production of, operatic, choral and other highclass musical works. Motwithstanding the passing of the years and even into the 21 st century, the society remains faithful to its original objective. Operational Ethos of the R&R: While the production team , orchestra and technical crews including lighting and set design - for each of the society's productions is provided by experienced theatrical professionals, the chorus m em bers and principal line-up that appear on stage remains amateur. This ethos is guarded by the society's voluntary Executive Committee that is m ade-up of representatives of all the elem ents of the society's interest groups, associate m em bers and corporate supporters.

Initial & Subsequent Early Musical Productions: H I niUmtSn A* The first production - Gilbert & Sullivan's Mikado O ficm mrmt. 4. e was staged by the R&R in the Queen's Theatre, Pearse Street, Dublin in Decem ber 1913. The following year, also in Decem ber the society performed for the first time in the Gaiety Theatre, copy of the poster for the 1913 show Dublin with another Gilbert & Sullivan operetta Yeomen of the Guard. As the society developed and m em bership expanded it was decided to com plem ent the society's Gilbert & Sullivan perform ances by including other musical com edy productions in its repertoire. In 1915 Planquette's Les Cloches de Corneville was performed and this broadening of the society's range of productions afforded its m em bers many different opportunities to use their individual and com bined range of musical talents and dramatic skills. The O ngoing Contribution of the R&R to the Musical Theatre life of Dublin: The society has, since its establishm ent 90 years ago, becom e a major contributor to the musical theatre life of Dublin city. The twice-yearly productions professionally presented in prestigious locations - including Ireland's National Concert Hall - continue to attract maximum audiences. The society offers associate m em bership to those friends who regularly support its musical productions. It also maintains close links with a host of individuals and organisations that have a keen continuous interest in the musical productions of the R&R.
