A Welcome to You From the President o f the Rathmines & R athgar M usical Society On behalf of the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society I welcome you to the National Concert Hall and to our concert celebrating the 90th birthday of this great old Dublin institution, known affectionately as “The R and R”.

How did it all begin? On the 20th April 1913, Mr. C. P. Fitzgerald, organist and choirmaster of the Church of the Three Patrons, Rathgar, gathered together som e musical friends at 48 Summerville Road, Rathmines to form an am ateur musical society which they called “The Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society”. As a result of that meeting the ‘R&R’ cam e into being. Its first production was The Mikado which opened at the Queens Theatre on the 8th Decem ber 1913 and so Dublin theatrical history was born.

The following year, 1914, the Society moved to the Gaiety Theatre and it has presented a season of either Gilbert and Sullivan operas or a “Musical” each Spring and Autumn every year since then. Since 1984 we have also presented shows here at the National Concert Hall.

For those of you who are interested in statistics, the Society, in its ninety years of existence, has staged 272 shows which included many Irish premieres at the Gaiety Theatre such as Camelot, Fiddler on the Roof, My Fair Lady, Guys and Dolls, Gigi, Hello Dolly, Kiss Me Kate and Anything Goes.

And so with all the songs, from all the shows, through all the years. I’m sure you will hear som e of your favourites this evening.

1 hope the ‘R&R’ will continue to entertain for at least another ninety years.

Welcome to the Show!

Happy 90th Birthday R&R! After months of preparation, initial changes, decisions, more changes, rehearsals and even more changes some of us now look the same age as the Society.

It was shortly after our run of Me and My Girl that the R&R committee approached Pat and myself informing us that our ‘mission (should we choose to accept it) was to produce a celebratory concert that would hit the National Concert Hall running - as they say in the theatre world. The highest priority was that the event should be different. This, we presumed, was the R&R code for m ake sure it is less expensive than your last effort. But oh! How wrong we were.

After many sleepless nights, and days of head scratching - one as ‘follically’ challenged as the other - we decided that ‘our’ celebratory concert should be a Party and what’s the most important ingredient in a Party? Yes, you’ve guessed it, the guests. So, whom do we invite? Our best friends, naturally!

People, who have supported the Society over the years, people whose careers started with the R&R, and hopefully a splattering of dignitaries. The invitations were issued and the replies were received.

It was then that our biggest problem hit us straight between the two eyes.

Our Party was to last for nine performances. How could we expect ‘ordinary mortals’ to last the pace? It’s different for us R&R members who have been schooled for years in the art of singing, dancing, acting for two and a half hours every night. Followed by eating and drinking, and indeed then more singing into the early hours. But to achieve this level of revelry takes a dedication that we could not expect from non-members. It was then that we had a brainwave. Video! If it is good enough for the Oscars its good enough for the R&R. We hope that you enjoy the video messages, amidst a feast of your favourite show tunes lavishly dressed, and all contained within a sumptuous set that befits the occasion.

1 will leave you to enjoy the concert v^th this message. Should you enjoy the evening I v\^ll see you in the bar after the show for a celebratory drink! If however you don’t like our ideas I would like to take this opportunity to put on record the ‘it was all Pat’s fault’.

Concert Directors Pat Campbell Pat Campbell has been a member of the R&R for approaching sixty years, having joined the Society in 1945. He was a member o f the chorus for the first twenty-six years and it was his performance of KoKo in the 1971 R&R production of The M ikado that started his career as a leading player. Since then he has played all the com ic roles in the Gilbert and Sullivan operas on very many occasions together w ith character parts in a variety of musicals. Pat is also very well known as a compere at concerts and other social events.

He has served on various R&R com m ittees over the years and was General Secretary of the Society from 1974 to 1986. In 1988 Pat was a recipient of a City o f Dublin Millennium Award for Outstanding Achievement in Light Music. He is a Trustee of the R&R and was made a Life Member of the Society in 1996. Pat was appointed President of the Society in 1998, a position that he holds with great pride.

His last stage appearance was as Colonel Pickering in the 1995 R&R production of M y Fair Lady. He is delighted, although somewhat surprised, to be involved in this Celebration!

Concert.

Garry Mountaine As a baritone Garry has appeared in Dublin, and around Ireland playing major roles as diverse as Finch in How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying to Tevye In Fiddler on the Roof.

Garry studied with Dr Veronica Dunne at the Leinster School of Music and at the RIAM with Professor Paul Deegan. He appeared in the Opera Theatre Company’s production of Mahogany Songspiel for the Dublin Theatre Festival and Sceanario’s production of In Company With Sondheim in the NCH. Garry, while with the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, played Poo-Bah in their production of The Mikado and Wilfred Shadbolt in Yeomen of the Guard.

Garry’s TV and radio work in Ireland includes appearances on The Late Late Show, Live at 3 and Theatre Nights. He has also appeared in productions of The Mikado and Yeomen of the Guardfor the BBC. Garry played Ramades in Risen People and Prof. Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady, both productions staged in the Gaiety. Other parts include Joe Kellor in All My Sons, Emile De Becque in South Pacific, Sam Byck in Assassins, Khruschev in JFK and Dancairo in Carmen. He played The Man in Buskin in the Tivoli Theatre and Nathan Detroit in the recent R&R production of Guys & Dolls in the Gaiety.

This is Garry’s third time to direct with the R&R, having previously directed The Mikado (2001) and The Pirates of Penzance (2002).

Musical Director: Gearoid Grant Gearoid Grant was born in Dublin and graduated with a B.Mus degree from University College Dublin. Since then he has combined a freelance career as conductor with a career in music education. He has conducted all the principal orchestras in Ireland, the National Symphony Orchestra, the RTE Concert Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra, the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland.

Gearoid devised and continues to present and conduct the acclaimed series Music in the Classroom which introduces music to 30,000 Irish children annually, with I performances at the National Concert Hall In Dublin and in major venues around Ireland. The programme is developed in conjunction with RTE, The Irish Times and the Department of Education. Gearoid has toured in England with the Irish Chamber Orchestra. He has conducted all of Shaun Davey’s major works, and premieres of Shaun Davey’s Relief o f Derry S ym ph o n y in 1989 and his Concerto for Clilleann Pipe performed for the first time at Greenwich Festival in London. These works are recorded for Tara Records. He has done a great deal of film work with the Irish Film Orchestra, of which he is Associate Musical Director. No stranger to television and theatre, Gearoid Grant has conducted a wide repertoire ranging from Mozart to Sondheim.

Gearoid has been the conductor of the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland (Jnder 18s since it was formed in 1980 and is a member of the Board of the NYOl.

Chori^ Master: Jackie Curran-OIohan Daughter of Josephine Scanlon and the late Chris Curran, Jackie has distinguished herself as a performer, musician, music director, chorus master and teacher. Her musical education thrived under Sr. Agnes Nolan at St. Mary’s College, Arklow, Eithne Troy at the College of Music and subsequently CICD from which she graduated with a B Mus. (Hons.).

Jackie has been Music Director and Conductor for many show premieres and was awarded Best Music Director at the Waterford Festival of Light Opera for Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods. This, and conducting her father in Annie at the Olympia, she regards as her highlights to date.

As a performer she has appeared at the NCH and on RTE radio and television.

Most recently Jackie conducted the Glasnevin Musical Society in the Barra O’Tuama New Year Opera Gala in the NCH. Watch out for Jackie on stage during Celebration! - as she shows her beloved R&R Chorus Members h o w it’s really done!

Marina Kealy Marina has been involved with dance from an early age. She has performed in all the major theatres, professional cabaret and on national television. Marina’s work has been wide and varied. Having danced in numerous John Player Tops o f the Town finals, she was delighted when the show she choreographed reached the national final and was broadcast live by RTE. Other successes include, Godspell, Chess, Guys and Dolls, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, West Side Story, Jesus Christ Superstar, Wonderful Town and many dance workshops throughout the country.

Marina’s work received a nomination from AIMS for Grease and won Best Choreographer Award from both AIMS and the Bangor Festival for her work in Me and My Girl. Following this Marina was asked to co-choreograph the professional production of Me and My Girl at the Olympia Theatre. Marina has a long association with the R&R, firstly as a dancer and performing the role of Liat in South Pacific. More recently Marina has acted as Assistant Choreographer to Rita Kealy on several productions and last year choreographed the R&R production of The Pirates o f Penzance in the NCH. Marina would like to thank the cast for all their hard work and wishes the R&R a very Happy 90th Birthday.

John O’Donoghue John is a graduate of the National College of Art and Design. This is John’s seventh production with the R&R, having previously designed The Pirates o f Penzance, The Mikado, A Century o f Song (NCH) and Fiddler on the Roof Oklahoma and Guys and Dolls (Gaiety).

Recent design credits include: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe for Cork Opera House, La Traviata for Lyric Opera (NCH), The Sound o f Music, Oklahoma and Olioer for Festival Productions (NCH), Return to the Forbidden Planet for Broadcast Theatre Company (Andrews Lane and Tivoli Theatres), Buskin' (Tivoli Theatre), The Flired Man (Draiocht) and Assassins (Samuel Beckett Theatre).

Other designs include: Chicago, Evita, Bamum, M ack & Mabel, Godspell, Singing in the Rain, Crazy fo r You, Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Anything Goes, The Pyjama Game, Calamity Jane, Carousel, West Side Story, Me and M y Girl. Recent p la y credits include: Juno and the Paycock (Liberty Theatre), War, Canaries, Doghouse (Draiocht), Oncle Oncle and Nothing Compares to You (Andrews Lane Theatre). Recent pantomime credits include: Sleeping Beauty and Jack & the Beanstalk for Cork Opera House and Aladdin (Liberty Theatre).

For the last eight years, John has designed the set for Ireland’s longest-running show - Jury’s Irish Cabaret. Future design projects include: Seagulls Dance at the Helix Theatre and Into The Woods at Draiocht.

Jimmy Dixon Since joining tiie Society in 1987 for Showboat, Jimmy lias played a variety of roles in both musicals and Gilbert & Sullivan, his most recent being the Major General in The Pirates o f Penzance at the NCH last Spring.

He has also presented five Concert Seasons for the R&R. Outside of the Society, he has appeared with many musical societies over the years, including a season with Kinsale Opera Group of Gilbert & Sullivan last year. Most recently he appeared with Festival Productions in their production of The Sound of Music last Christmas, at the National Concert Hall.

IMeianie

Melanie Keating Melanie studied speech and drama with Rosalind Lloyd and singing with Professor Paul Deegan at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. She has also studied Acting for Camera at the Gaiety School of Acting and TV Presentation at the Bil Keating Centre for TV and Theatre Studies.

Melanie has worked with a number of Dublin drama groups and musical societies and has won awards over the years for her acting roles. She has played many leading roles with the R&R in the Gaiety Theatre and she also performed as a soloist in the R&R’s 1999 Romberg to Rogers Concert here in the NCH. More recently Melanie has presented many concerts and variety shows in the NCH, Jury’s Hotel and The Pavilion Theatre in Dun Laoghaire. Over the Christmas period, Melanie played the role of Baroness Elsa Schraeder in The Sound o f Music with f^estival Productions here in the NCH. Melanie would like to congratulate the R&R on reaching its 90th year and for the contribution the R&R has made to musical life in Dublin since 1913.

Lucy

Lucy Lane For many years as an active member of the R&R, Lucy has played the entire range of leading female parts in the Gilbert & Sullivan operas. She has also appeared on many occasions with the Society during its seasons in the National Concert Hall.

Lucy is delighted to be participating in the Society’s 90th Birthday Celebration Concert.

Paul Byrom Paul’s interest in music was evident at an early age. Before he turned seven, Paul started voice training with the late Daniel McNulty. He has won many competitions throughout Ireland, including the Feis Ceoil, and was subsequently awarded the Rose Bowl for achieving the highest points in the competition that year.

Paul enjoys all styles of music. He has had leading roles in Brigadoon, South Pacific, Fiddler on the Roof, Grease and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. His first major role in an opera was as Amahl in Amahl and the Night Visitors and more recently he performed with Anna Livia Opera in their production of Faust.

In 2001 Paul joined the R&R for their production of The Mikado where he played the part of Nanki Poo and the following year played the lead role of Frederick in The Pirates o f Penzance.

At the age of fourteen Paul recorded his first solo album The Golden Voice and in November 2001 he released his second album I Hear You Calling to raise money for The National Council for the Blind in Ireland.

He has many appearances on television and radio and in the summer of 2001 Paul was invited to sing at Croke Park for the Leinster Senior Football Final and again at the All-Ireland Final. Last summer he returned to Croke Park to sing at both the Hurling and Football finals.

Paul most recently starred in a tribute concert for Count John McCormack, presented by RTE in the NCH. In December 2001 Paul received one of three bursaries awarded by the John McCormack Society for young singers in Ireland. The award was presented by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Michael Mulcahy. Paul also performed at the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Gala Concert in Cork’s City Hall.

Through music, Paul has had the opportunity of travelling to some exotic places. Most recently he performed as a special guest of Phil Coulter’s in the Caribbean.

Paul joined the Three Irish Tenors last April. They released their first album with him in November called Atlantic Shore prior to setting off on their Christmas tour of the USA and Canada. They are preparing for a tour of Ireland this summer and the OK in the autumn. Recently, they performed with Neil Diamond in the Phoenix Park .

Paul is still in training at the Leinster School of Music, Dublin, working under the watchful eye of Dr. Veronica Dunne and Ms. Jeannie Reddin.

Paul Kelly Paul Kelly studied v^th Dr. Veronica Dunne at the College of Music, Dublin and has won many prizes for his singing including the John McCormack Cup at the Feis Ceoil. Paul as sung roles in operas by Handel, Mozart, Smetana and Poulenc and has many roles to his credit in light opera.

Equally at home on the concert platform, he has given several song and Lieder recitals and has regularly featured in performances of oratorio.

He is w ell know n to D ub lin audiences fo r his appearances w ith the R&R, singing Col. Fairfax, Nanki Poo and F rederick in the G ilbert & S ulllivan repertoire as w ell as appearinq in several o f its concerts at the NCH.

CHRIS BRCITON - The Rabbi in Tradition from Fiddler On The Roof Chris Bruton now 90 years of age, was born in 1913 the year the Society was founded.

He played many leading roles during his very long association with the R&R - including playing the part of the Rabbi in three previous productions of Fiddler On The Roof.

Chris progressed from playing lead roles in the Society’s productions to becoming the R£rR Stage Manager.

Ninety Years of Musical Magic!

Introduction: It all started in 1913 at a nneeting held in 48 Summerville Park, Rathmines Dublin. C. R Fitzgerald, who was the young organist at that time in Rathgar's Church of the Three Patrons, wanted to establish a musical society whose membership would be formed from residents of the Dublin townships of Rathmines and Rathgar.

Original Objectives of the R&R: The objectives of the proposed musical society were the study of, and production of, operatic, choral and other highclass musical works. Motwithstanding the passing of the years and even into the 21 st century, the society remains faithful to its original objective.

Operational Ethos of the R&R: While the production team, orchestra and technical crews including lighting and set design - for each of the society's productions is provided by experienced theatrical professionals, the chorus members and principal line-up that appear on stage remains amateur. This ethos is guarded by the society's voluntary Executive Committee that is made-up of representatives of all the elements of the society's interest groups, associate members and corporate supporters.

IMUlU « iM . tir 1 I* Initial & Subsequent Early Musical Productions: The first production - Gilbert & Sullivan's Mikado was staged by the R&R in the Queen's Theatre, Pearse Street, Dublin in December 1913. The following year, also in December the society performed for the first time in the Gaiety Theatre, Copy o f the poster fo r the 1913 shoiv Dublin with another Gilbert & Sullivan operetta Yeomen of the Guard. As the society developed and membership expanded it was decided to complement the society's Gilbert & Sullivan performances by including other musical comedy productions in its repertoire.

In 1915 Planquette's Les Cloches de Corneville was performed and this broadening of the society's range of productions afforded its members many different opportunities to use their individual and combined range of musical talents and dramatic skills. ”

The Ongoing Contribution of the R&R to the Musical Theatre life of Dublin: The society has, since its establishment 90 years ago, become a major contributor to the musical theatre life of Dublin city. The twice-yearly productions professionally presented in prestigious locations - including Ireland's Mational Concert Hall - continue to attract maximum audiences. The society offers associate membership to those friends who regularly support its musical productions. It also maintains close links with a host of individuals and organisations that have a keen continuous interest in the musical productions of the R&R.

P hilip

Philip Byrne P hilip has been singing lead parts in musicals since he was 25 years old.

He started in the chorus of the Dublin Grand Opera Society but soon moved to musicals. A three time winner of the best male voice award at the Waterford International Festival, he has toured America many times and performed on television and radio both at home and abroad. Ten years in Doyle’s Irish Cabaret at the Buriington Hotel followed many extended cabaret seasons in Killiney Castle, Clontarf Castle and The Braemor Rooms. Philip has written and performed Moore and French (The Entertainers) which has clocked more than 450 performances both in Ireland and abroad. His next performance will be along with Sandra Kelly in Showtim e at the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre on Friday 2nd May.

S andra

Sandra Kelly Sandra studied singing with Mary Brennan and Alison Young at the DIT Conservatory of Music where she was awarded the Gold Medal for singing. She has won several prizes in the Dublin Feis Ceoil including the Dermot Troy trophy for Oratorio, Stanford Cup, the Ford-Taylor prize for Gilbert & Sullivan and the R&R Cup. Sandra has played principal roles with several musical societies around the country. These include Adele in Die Fledermaus, Laurey in Oidahoma, Nellie Forbush in South Pacific, Marian in Music Man and Josephine in HMS Pinafore.

Radio work includes playing the role of Laurey in The Gay Byrne Show’s production of Oklahoma. She has also appeared in Showtime, a musical variety show, which has been performed in many venues around the country.

A familiar face with the R&R, Sandra played Tessa in The Gondoliers and Magnolia in Showboat and Sarah in Guys and Dolls at the Gaiety Theatre and has also appeared as a soloist with the R&R in the NCH on many occasions.

Sandra’s next appearance will be with Philip Byrne in Showtim e in the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre on May 2nd.

Sylvia

Sylvia O’Brien Sylvia ‘is another emerging singer of remarkable talent, both vocally and dramatically’ {Sunday Tribune). This Dublin-born soprano possesses a voice of great quality and is establishing herself as a performer of renown in many genres of singing repertoire. She recently earned a place in the semi-finals of the Belvedere International Singing Competition in Vienna and in the finals of the Dr. Veronica Dunne Irish European Union Singing Competition.

Sylvia was the leading lady in the R&R’s recent production at the National Concert Hall of The Pirates of Penzance and thrilled audiences in Theatre Night’s An Evening o f Ivor Movello.

She is a remarkable performer of oratorio repertoire and has been a guest soprano with many groups including the Culwick Choral Society, Tallaght Choral, Our Lady’s Choral Society, the Third Day Chorale and Trinity College Choral. She has recorded the Rutter Requ/em for RTE. Mass in C Minor by Mozart, Christmas Oratorio by Saint-Saens. She recorded selections for a preview CD of the Wexford Opera Festival’s forthcoming production of Martinu’s Mirandolina.

She has performed in several productions with Opera Ireland and toured Ireland within the ensemble of the acclaimed Opera Theatre Company production of The Rake’s Progress.

As a solo recitalist, she has sung in The Anna Livia Opera Festival, The Office of Public Works, the Bank of Ireland Arts Recital series, and at the National Gallery in their presentation recital of French repertoire in conjunction with the French Impressionist Exhibition. As a member of the National Chamber Choir, she has toured nationally and internationally, and broadcasted on television and radio.

Sylvia is a recipient of awards from the Arts Council Of Ireland, the Dublin Corporation and the Royal Irish Academy of Music.
