On behalf of the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society, 1welcome you to the National Concert Hall and to our production of the The Mikado. Of all the Gilbert and Sullivan light operas, The M ikado is the one m ost performed throughout the world. It is not surprising therefore that the founders of our Society should have chosen The M ikado as its first production which took place on the 8th December 1913 at the Queens Theatre, Pearse Street - now sadly replaced by an office building.

Opposite you will see a programme of that first production. So the R&R commenced its long and successful life with the opening chorus from The Mikado.

Our Society, during its 88 years in existence, has presented all thirteen G&S light operas many times over, but the ever popular M ikado is by far the m ost performed - this being the 30th presentation of The M ikado. 1 hope you have an enjoyable evening.

The Mikado is over a hundred and sixteen years old. In all that time it has remained the most popular and widely produced of the operas, appealing as it does to all ages, from the youngest schoolchild to the ‘golden oldies’ who have savoured its lovely music all through their lives.

The critics of the time said: “Messrs Gilbert and Sullivan must be familiar with success by this time, but never in their brilliant partnership of sprightly music and fantastic fun has a more unanimous verdict of approval been passed upon their labours, than when the curtains fell on Saturday last ...”

These auspicious words bear repeating. How true they have proved to be. We hope our audiences will rejoice again in The Three Little Maids’ and the brilliantly effective trios and duets, leading to the finale of the first act, when Katisha’s entrance is greeted with disdain, but with some of the most inspiring music in the whole work.

The second act with Yum-Yum’s beautiful ‘The Moon and / ’ the Madrigal and splendid chorus work is rewarding to the last note, and probably by now completely familiar to listeners who are themselves word-perfect in the songs.

GARRY MOUNTAINE As a baritone Garry has appeared in Dublin and around the country, playing major roles as diverse as ‘Finch’ in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying to Tevye’ in Fiddler on the Roof.

Born in Dublin, he became a member of the popular Young Peoples Theatre Group and has appeared in their productions to date including Plaza Suite (Jessie Kipplinger) and Nicholas Nickelby (Lord Hawke and other roles).

He has won many awards for his work as an actor and singer. He studied with Dr. Veronica Dunne at The Leinster School of Music and Professor Paul Deegan at the RIAM. He appeared in the Opera Theatre Company’s production of Mahogany Songspiel for the Dublin Theatre Festival and Sceanario’s production of In Company with Sondheim staged at the National Concert Hall.

He appeared with D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, playing ‘Poo-Bah’ and ‘Wilfred Shadbolt’ in their productions of The Mikado and the Yeomen of the Guard (which has been recorded for TER/EMI), at Sadlers Wells, London and the Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham.

Television and radio include The Late Late Show, Live at 3 and Theatre Nights all for RTE, ‘Shadbolt’ in Yeomen o f the Guard and ‘Pooh-Bah’ in The Mikado for BBC Television.

Garry’s most recent productions include ‘Ramades’ in the Risen People at the Gaiety Theatre, ‘Henry Higgins’ in My Fair Lady at the Gaiety Theatre, ‘Joe Keller’ in All my Sor\s at the Andrew’s Lane Theatre, ‘Emile’ in South Pacific at the Gaiety Theatre, ‘Sam Byck’ in Assassins at the Beckett Theatre, ‘Khruschev’ in JFK at the Olympia Theatre and ‘Dancairo’ in Carmen at NCH, and he completed a twelve week run playing ‘The Man’ in Buskin’ at the Tivoli Theatre and the Opera House, Cork and Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof at the Gaiety Theatre.

This is Garry’s directorial debut with the R&R.

JACKIE CURRAN OLOHAN Daughter of Josephine Scanlon and Chris Curran, Jackie has distinguished herself as a performer, musician, music director and chorus master. Her musical education thrived under Sr. Agnes Cecilia at St. Mary’s College, Arklow, the College of Music and CICD. She has been Music Director for many show premieres including Zorba, The Hired Man, Most Happy Fella, Anything Goes, Into the Woods, La Cage aux Folles and A Chorus Line. She was awarded Best Music Director at the 1992 Waterford International Festival of Light Opera for her work on Sondheim’s Into the Woods and this, with conducting her father in the production of Annie at the Olympia, she regards as her highlights to date.

Jackie has made many solo appearances in the NCH and works regularly on television and radio.

With husband Sean, she sings as part of the group Avoca and works as a backing vocalist on the session scene. She teaches music at Our Lady’s School in Rathnew.

GEAROID GRANT Gearoid Grant was born in Dublin and graduated with a B.Mus degree from University College Dublin. Since then he has combined a freelance career as conductor with a career in music education. He has conducted all the principal orchestras in Ireland, the National Symphony Orchestra, the RTE Concert Orchestra, the Ulster Orcfiestra, the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland.

Gearoid devised and continues to present and conduct the acclaimed series Music in the Classroom which introduces music to 30,000 Irish children annually, with 24 performances at the National Concert Hall in Dublin and in major venues around Ireland. The programme is developed in conjunction with RTE, The Irish Times and the Department of Education. Gearoid Grant has toured in England with the Irish Chamber Orchestra. He has conducted all of Shaun Davey’s major works, and premieres of Shaun Davey’s Relief o f Derry Symphony in 1989 and his Concerto for Uilleann Pipe performed for the first tim e at Greenwich Festival in London.

These works are recorded for Tara Records. He has done a great deal of film work with the Irish Film Orchestra, of which he is Associate Musical Director. No stranger to television and theatre, Gearoid Grant has conducted a wide repertoire ranging from Mozart to Sondheim.

Gearoid has been the conductor of the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland Under 18s since it was formed in 1980 and is a member of the Board of the NYOI. He toured with the Under 18s in Cyprus in 1986 and in Scotland in 1997. He conducted the NYOI at the RTE Proms in 1986.

The NYOI Under 18s have already been invited to open the British Festival of Youth Orchestras in Edinburgh under his baton on August 11th, 2001.

RITA KEALY Dublin-born Rita originally trained and danced with the famous choreographer Alice Dalgarno. As a professional dancer she appeared in all of Dublin’s major theatres, in a variety of shows.

She has worked in films and television, including many RTE light entertainment shows.

Turning to choreography, Rita has worked with countless musical societies throughout the country. Recognition has come in the form of many endorsements including ‘Best Choreographer’ at the Waterford International Festival o f Light Opera on four separate occasions and also similar awards from AIMS. Rita has choreographed several national finalists in the popular John Player Tops of the Town’ competition. Most recently she has choreographed many shows and concerts for the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society and the Giasnevin Musical Society at the Gaiety and National Concert Hall, together with the ‘Bank of Ireland Proms’ for RTE. Her work has also been seen on the stages of the Grand Opera House, Belfast and several seasons with the lORC at the Cork Opera House. She choreographed the very successful Me and M y Girl for the lORC at the Olympia Theatre. Admired for the vitality and dedication of her work, Rita has also given workshops to a variety of groups countrywide. Rita would like to thank Ger, her assistant choreographer, for all her help and support over the last few weeks.

ANTONIA BOYLE Antonia Boyle has been studying piano and voice at the DIT Conservatory of Music for many years. She is a Feis Ceol winner and has appeared in the NCH on many previous occasions. She is a final year student of Law at OCD and is thoroughly enjoying perform ing with the R&R Musical Society.

PAUL BYROM Paul’s interest in music started at an early age where he was taught by the late Daniel McNulty. He has won many com petitions including the Feis Ceoil and was subsequently awarded the Rose Bowl for achieving the highest points in the com petition that year. Since then he has taken lead roles in rnany shows such as Am ahl and the N ight Visitors with RTE and the National Symphony Orchestra, Brigadoon, South Pacific, Fiddler on the R o o f Grease and Joseph and the Am azing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

He released his first album at the age of fourteen, called The Golden Voice and appeared on RTE and BBC television many times.

Paul is currently studying full time in the Leinster School of Music under the watchful eye of Jeannie Reddin and Dr. Veronica Dunne.

MORGAN COOKE Morgan would like to thank the R&R for giving him the opportunity to return to Dublin after an absence of ten years.

From 1991 to 1997, he lived in Paris working as a repetiteur by day and perform ing at night on the vibrant cabaret scene, where he learnt make-up skills and put into practice the singing skills he was observing during the day.

From 1997 to 2001, Morgan has been living in Galway, where, apart from studying for an Arts degree, he put on productions o f Ham let, A M idsum m er N ig h t’s Dream and The Threepenny Opera. He also did the Summer Festival circuit in 1998 and 1999 with The Zoo Story by Edward Albee and The D iary o f a M ad Piano - his own take on G ogol’s D ia ry o f a Madm an. Morgan composed incidental music for most of their productions, which led to his first full-length commissioned piece, Daghda Harp which opened in Galway ‘Muscailt’ Festival in February 2001.

Before embarking on his travels, Morgan was a Lay Vicar in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and attended the Schola Cantorum in St. Finian’s College, Mullingar, where, at the tender age of sixteen, he played ‘KoKo’ for the first time.

NICKY DREW A native of Wicklow, Nicky has been involved with M. Y. Th. Productions, playing such roles as ‘Sandy’ in Grease, ‘Colombia’ in The R ocky Horror S h ow and ‘Kim’ in highlights from Miss Saigon. She created the female role of ‘Annas’ in Jesus Christ Superstar, which is currently in rehearsal for April.

This production of The Mikado is Nicky’s first venture into the world of Light Opera. She is delighted to be making her debut in the National Concert Hall with the R&R.

NAOISE STUART KELLY Naoise has just returned from the recent Far Eastern tour as lead vocal understudy with Rioerdance the Show, having performed as lead In both Paris and Hong Kong. She currently holds the title of Thom as Moore Singer of the Year (RTE) and is the first recipient of the Home-Hewson Bursary which she plans to use to help finance a full-time musical theatre course in drama, singing and dance in the CJnited Kingdom.

Naoise presently studies singing with Dr. Veronica Dunne while working with her repetiteurs Jeannie Reddin and David Wray. She attended the National Performing Arts School where she studied dram a and musical theatre under Rebecca Roper. Her interest in musical theatre has led her to perform as ‘Mary Magdalene’ in Jesus Christ Superstar, ‘Marty’ in Grease, ‘Sorceress of the North’ in The Wizard^of Oz and m ost recently in A Chelsea Affair; a musical play portraying the life of Oscar Wilde at Theatre Space. Recently Naoise performed in Six Voices, One Stage, One Night at NCH and has appeared in several television advertisements. Apart from her passion for musicals, she recently graduated with a BA Honours Degree in Humanities. Naoise is delighted to be playing the part of Yum-Yum and would like to thank the R&R for their support.

PETER LEWIS Peter Lewis studied singing with Frank Cowle, and won Feis Ceoil gold m edals in 1973 and 1974. Since then he has sung many principal roles with the R&R, mainly in Gilbert & Sullivan. Of these the m ost notable would be ‘Pish T ush’ in The Mikado on several occasions, and ‘The Bosun’ in HMS Pinafore on two occasions.

Also a regular contributor as principal to the concert repertories at Mt. Argus, Kilkenny Castle and King’s Hospital.

ARTHUR McGAGRAN Arthur has been involved in over seventy musical productions since he started at the tender age of 17. In that time he was nom inated for four AIMS Awards culminating in The Best Supporting Actor Award for ‘J u d d Fry’ in Oklahoma!

His success on stage include such parts as ‘Jupiter’ in Orpheus in the Underworld, ‘the King’ in The King and I, ‘J o e ’ in S h ow Boat and ‘Tevye’ in Fiddler on the Roof, which is his favourite part.

He has com peted in four international festivals of light opera and has been the recipient of the Gold Medal for Bass Solo in the Feis Maitiu.

In the last few years he has directed a num ber of musicals and was a founder m em ber of the Celbridge Musical Society. Arthur played the part of ‘Ju d d Fry’ with the R&R in Oklahom a in 1982 and ‘Captain George Brackett’ in South Pacific in 1996. He performed in S h o w Business in the National Concert Hall and was ‘Captain Andy’ in the R&R production of S h ow Boat in 1998. Arthur has just directed Me & My ‘Girl with Clane Musical Society.

MARJORIE MULVANY Marjorie played her first leading role in Bless the Bride with St. Mary’s Musical Society, Navan in 1972. Since that time she has becom e a very popular performer, not only in her hom e town, but nationwide.

Marjorie has been singing since the age of four, studying with the late Winnie O ’Dea. She has performed with many musical societies all over the country, as well as in the National Concert Hall, the Gaiety Theatre and in an international concert in Dallas, Texas.

To her credit are m any shows including Oklahoma!, Brigadoon, The Desert Song, The Merry Widow, Calam ity Jane, Carousel, Showboat, Fiddler on the R oof and her m ost memorable performance as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady.

Most recently, Marjorie has appeared in Dublin Musical Theatre Players’ productions of Kiss o f the Spider Woman (winner of Best Overall Show at the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera 1999) and Man o f La Mancha.

Marjorie has recently com m enced vocal training with Prof. Paul Deegan and is delighted to be returning to the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society to play Katisha in The Mikado.

DEREK RYAN Derek entered the Leinster School of Music early in 1997, studying with Dr. Veronica Dunne and Ms. Jeannie Reddin.

Since then he has appeared in many productions and concerts throughout Ireland. He played the dark and powerful character of ‘Judd Fry’ in the R&R production of Oklahoma at the Gaiety in 1999. He won the Bass Solo in the RDS Feis Ceoil early in 2000. He has had masterclasses with Sir Thom as Allen and Mr. Willard Whyte, two internationally acclaimed singers.

Derek has appeared with Lyric Opera in the productions of Fiddler on the R oof and Cavalleria Rusticana at the NCH. He has had successful appearances in Waterford and in the Irish Ring Opera at the NCH also. He recently was a co-producer of Six Voices, One Stage, One Night with his company HM Productions in February of this year inthe John Field Room. Plans for the future include a ‘HM’ tour and playing the ‘Doctor’ in Verdi’s Macbeth in May.

JOHN O’DONOGHUE - S et Designer A graduate of the National College of Art & Design, John has designed three previous productions for the Rathmlnes & Rathgar Musical Society - A Century o f Song at the National Concert Hall), Fiddler on the R oof and Oklahoma! at the Gaiety Theatre.

Design credits include, most recently, Oliver at the new Draiocht Theatre, B uskin’ at the Tivoli Theatre and Cork Opera House, Return to the Forbidden Planet for Andrews Lane and Tivoli Theatres and Assassins at the Samuel Beckett Theatre). He has also designed Godspell, Chess, Chicago, Singin’ in the Rain, Anything Goes, Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma!, Grease, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, The Pajama Game and the plays. Canaries and War. For the past seven years, John has designed the set for the longest-running show in Ireland, Jury’s Irish Cabaret, and he has also designed for the Maureen Potter Show and the June Rodgers Show at Clontarf Castle.

His designs for Barnum, Crazy for You and Me and My Girl won the Best Set Award at the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera .
