Once again it is my privilege and pleasure, on behalf of the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society, to welcome you to the Gaiety Theatre and to our Society’s production of that wonderful show - Guys and Dolls.

1find it interesting when this show is referred to as a modern musical, that in fact the show is over half a century old!

Guys and Dolls (music and lyrics by Frank Loesser) is based on those colourful Mew York characters created by the writer, Damon Runyon. The show opened on Broadway in 1950 and despite some rather luke-warm reviews it had a long and successful ‘run’ of almost four years, it is strange to relate that, in America, there were very few worthwhile revivals of the show until the ‘smash hit’ revival on Broadway in 1992. Since then Guys and Dolls has become even more popular than the original production in 1950.

This is the Society’s third production of this great show - the other two being in 1966 and 1976.

So sit back, relax, try to forget the troubled times we live in and prepare yourself to meet those wonderful characters: Harry the Horse, Benny Southstreet, Nicely-Micely Johnson, Big Jule, etc.

THE STORY The show is based on Damon Runyan’s stories about the Guys and Dolls who inhabited Broadway.

Nathan D etroit is the cream o f the crop, who runs crap games in various places in New York. Nathan is engaged to Adelaide for 14 years! She is a dancer at the ‘H ot Box N ight Club’, she’s all set to marry, but poor Nathan is not quite ready yet. On top o f his rom antic problems he is having trouble finding a place for his next crap game, as Lt. Brannigan is breathing down his neck.

If Nathan could just get his hands on $1,000 to square up a guy he could use his place for the game. Sky Masterson, Harry the Horse, Big Jule from Chicago and several others are looking for some action, and are only too w illing and able to roll the dice. Nathan has just got to get his hands on this thousand bucks!

Nathan comes up with a plan, that cannot lose. He makes a bet vidth Sky Masterson that he can’t take a certain girl to Havana, Cuba. He knows he is on to a winner as this girl is none other than Sister Sarah Brown of the Salvation Army.

But alas, Nathan underestimates Sky’s charm. Recognising that the mission is in danger o f closure due to lack o f support. Sky promises Sarah a dozen sinners if she will go to Havana w ith him, but things get com plicated when they fall in love. W hile they are in Havana, Nathan uses the mission for his game; when Sarah discovers this she thinks the worst o f Sky and his reasons for bringing her to Havana.

Eventually Nathan finds a place for his game dowm in the sewers. Sky arrives in an effort to deliver on his promise to Sarah and rolls dice for the boys souls, and sure enough he delivers his dozen or so sinners to the mission for an all-night prayer meeting. W hat a meeting it turns out to be!!!

Then in true Broadway style it all comes together with wedding bells!!!

Extract from the programme of the R&R’s production of Guys and Dolls in 1976 WHAT IS A CRAP GAME? ‘Craps’ is a game of chance - a gamble - played with two dice. It is illegal and,therefore, much favoured by the characters who frequent Broadway. Whenever a group of enthusiasts gathers, anxious to ‘Shoot Craps’, one always finds a gentleman willing to set the game up for them - for a modest percentage of the winnings of course! Just such a man is Nathan Detroit, and tonight we see his attempts to find a place where the cream of the gambling fraternity can get a little ‘action’. This is not so easy because the police do not like gamblers, and it would appear that their only mission in life is to break up the game. So the Guys get pushed around and the Dolls (who, after all, are ladies and, therefore, do not approve of gambling) take sides with the police.

There is a third group, who do not take sides with anyone. In fact, through the good offices of the ‘Save-a-Soul Mission’ they rather hope to win everyone over to their side! A betting man might hesitate to lay odds on the outcome of such a situation, but there is one thing sure - it is 12 to 7 on that there will be a happy ending!

One further point - having joined the gambling fraternity, it is essential to learn a few of their strange ords. For instance, a G is short for grand which means $1,000 (or bucks or potatoes), whilst a note has nothing to do with music - it is simply a $100 bill. Money is ‘Lettuce, a ‘Marker’ is an I.O.CI.. ‘Craps’ you win and ‘Snake-eyes’ you lose.

Noel’s credits include the Merry Widow, Die Fledermaus and Give m y Regards, with the Glasnevin Musical Society in the National Concert Hall. He has been very successful in the Waterford international Festival of Light Opera, winning the Best Director Awards for his production of Mack and Mabel (Sandymount Musical Society), Chicago, Cabaret, Barnum and in 1998 Crazy [or You. He specialises in premieres, and with Arthur’s Team he directed L il’Abner, Dames at Sea, New Pirates o f Penzance, On Your Toes, 42nd Street, Guys and Dolls and Singin’ in the Rain. Also to his credit are the Irish premieres of A Slice o f Saturday Might, Last o f the Red Hot Lovers in Andrew’s Lane, and Rebecca Storm’s Hollywood Ladies at the Tivoli.

Gearoid Grant was born in Dublin and graduated with a B.Mus degree from University College Dublin. Since then he has combined a freelance career as conductor with a career in music education. He has conducted all the principal orchestras in Ireland, the National Symphony Orchestra, the RTE Concert Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra, the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland.

in 1996 Noel directed/devised Different Dreams on television for RTE and staged The Last Night of the Proms and the Viennese Night for the Bank of Ireland Proms in the RDS. In December 1996, Noel directed the Irish premiere of Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins in the Samuel Beckett Centre.

His recent credits include Frank McGuinness’s Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me, world premiere of Brian O’Reilly’s Buskin’, Cinderella at the Gaiety and Me and M y Gid at the Olympia/Cork Opera House, and he won Best Director for the Award-winning Mack & Mabel at the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera in 2000 with Arthur’s Team. Noel graduated in 1997 from Trinity College with BA(Mod.) Honours Degree in Drama and Theatre Studies. After the success of Fiddler on the Roof, Oklahoma! and Carousel, Noel welcomes the opportunity to work with the R&R again.

Gearoid devised and continues to present and conduct the acclaimed series Music in the Classroom which introduces music to 30,000 Irish children annually, with performances at the National Concert Hall in Dublin and in major venues around Ireland. The programme is developed in conjunction with RTE, The Irish Times and the Department of Education.

Gearoid has toured in England with the Irish Chamber Orchestra. He has conducted all of Shaun Davey’s major works, and premieres of Shaun Davey’s Relief o f Derry Symphony in 1989 and his Concerto for Uilleann Pipe performed for the first time at Greenwich Festival in London. These works are recorded for Tara Records. He has done a great deal of film work with the Irish Film Orchestra, of which he is Associate Musical Director. No stranger to television and theatre, Gearoid Grant has conducted a wide repertoire ranging from Mozart to Sondheim.

Gearoid has been the conductor of the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland Under 18s since it was formed in 1980 and is a member of the Board of the NYOI.

JOHN O’DONOGHUE Set Designer

JACKIE CURRAN OLOHAN Chorus Master Daughter of Josephine Scanlon and the late Chris Curran, Jackie has distinguished herself as a performer, musician, music director, chorus master and teacher. Her musical education thrived under Sr. Agnes Nolan at St. Mary’s College, Arklow, Eithne Troy at the College of Music and subsequently (JCD from which she graduated with a B Mus. (Hons.).

Jackie has been Music Director and Conductor for many show premieres and was awarded Best Music Director at the Waterford Festival of Light Opera for Stephen Sondheim’s Into the U/oods. This, and conducting her father in Annie at the Olympia, she regards as her highlights to date.

As a performer she has appeared at the NCH and on RTE radio and television.

A graduate of the National College of Art & Design, John’s design credits include, most recently. La Traviata (National Concert HallJ, The Hired Man, Oliver (Draiocht). The Mikado and A Century o f Song (National Concert Hall), Oklahoma! and Fiddler on the Roof (Gaiety) Buskin’ (Tivoli Theatre and Cork Opera House), Assassins (Samuel Beckett Theatre) and Return to the Forbidden Planet (Andrews Lane and Tivoli Theatres). He has also designed Godspell, Chess, Chicago, Singin’ in the Rain, Anything Goes, Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma, Grease, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, The Pajama Game, Canaries and War. For the past eight years, John has designed the set for the longest-running show in Ireland, Ju ry’s Irish Cabaret.

His designs for Barnum, Crazy For You and Me and My Girl won the Best Set Award at the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera.

Future design projects include Dog House (Draiocht) in November and the Christmas pantomine Sleeping Beauty at the Cork Opera House.

s io b h A n McQGILLAN

Choreographer Siobhan trained with Billy Barry Stage School. She has choreographed many shows throughout Ireland including Oklahoma!, Carousel, Anything Goes, Guys & Dolls, The Hired Man, West Side Story and Seuen Brides for Seven Brothers.

She has been resident choreographer since Summer Festival Productions began and has choreographed The King and I, Fiddler on the Roof and My Fair Lady. She made her operatic debut in 2000 with Aida and Shall We Dance for Lyric Opera Productions.

Siobhan has received numerous awards for her work including the Gilbert category and the Sullivan category Best Choreographer Awards at the AIMS Awards for West Side Story and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

Future work includes La Traviata at the NCH, Annie in Banbridge and My Fair Lady with Coolmine

Sandra studied singing w itii Mary Brennan and Alison Young at the DIT Conservatory of Music and was awarded the gold medal for singing. She has also won several prizes in the Dublin Feis Ceol including the Dermot Troy for Oratorio, Stanford Cup, the Ford-Taylor prize for Gilbert and Sullivan and the Rathmines and Rathgar Cup.

Born in Dublin, John played in Twelve Angry Men with Dramsoc in CJCD and was nominated for the inter-varsity Best Actor award. He played Joseph in Dublin’s SFX in the production of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat. John’s previous appearance with the R&R was in the King and I.

As a baritone Garry has appeared in Dublin, and around Ireland playing major roles as diverse as Finch in How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying to Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof.

Sandra has played many principal roles including Adele in Die Fledermaus, Laurey in Oklahoma!, Nellie Forbush in South Pacific, Marian in Music Man and Josephine in HMS Pinafore.

Sandra’s radio work includes playing the role of Laury in the Gay Byrne Show’s production of Oklahoma!. She also appears in the variety show Showtimes that has been performed in many venues throughout Ireland.

Sandra played Tessa in The Gondoliers and Magnolia in Showboat in previous R&R productions at the Gaiety. She also appeared as a soloist with the R&R in the NCH on many occasions.

While in California, John studied scene study and camera with Milton Katselas and, in the Burbank Theatre, he played Gar in The Playboy o f the Western World.

John’s TV work includes roles in Ally McBeal and Melrose Place.

Garry studied witii Dr Veronica Dunne at the Leinster School of Music and at the RIAM with Professor Paul Deegan. He appeared in the Opera Theatre Company’s production of Mahogany Songspiel for the Dublin Theatre Festival and Sceanario’s production of In Company With Sondheim in the NCH. Garry, while with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, played Poo-Bah in their production of The Mikado and Wilfred Shadboit in Yeomen of the Guard.

Garry’s TV and radio work in Ireland includes appearances on The Late Late Show, Live at 3 and Theatre Mights. He has also appeared in productions of The Mikado and Yeomen of the Guard for the BBC, Garry’s played Ramades in Risen People and Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady both productions staged in the Gaiety. Other parts include Joe Kellor in All M y Sons, Emile in South Pacific, Sam Byck in Assassins, Khruschev in JFK and Dancairo in Carmen. He played The Man in Buskin in the Tivoli Theatre.

Garry directed the 2001 R&R production of The Mikado.

NICKY DREW Miss A delaide Nicky has played many roles in her native Wicklow from Kim in Miss Saigon, Columbia in The Rocky Horror Show to Sandy in Grease.

In 1994 she was awarded a scholarship for the Guildford (OK) School of Acting.

Following a career break Nicky returned to Ireland. She was cast for the part of Peep-Bo in the 2001 R&R production of The Mikado in the NCH. She recently played Model in Fiddler on the Roof with the Leixlip Musical and Variety Group at Waterford’s International Festival of Light Opera. Nicky is in rehearsal for Bryan Flynn Theatrix’s musical Pentimenti due to be premiered in Dublin in November 2001 in the Tivoli Theatre.

Joseph Walsh is currently studying with Mary Brennan.

He has performed in Aida, Madame Butterfly, The Flying Dutchman and the Silver Tassie all with Opera Ireland. With Lyric Opera he has played in Viva Verdi and Macbeth.

This is Joseph’s second show with the R&R

During a successful career in recital, oratorio and theatre Paul built an international reputation as a voice teacher. He holds a Professorship of Singing at the RIAM where for many years he has also directed the Opera Class. He is in frequent demand as a teacher and adjudicator in summer schools and festivals throughout Ireland and the CIK. Paul is the Irish representative on the Council of the Association of Teachers of Singing and on the Council of the European Voice Teachers Association and recently took part in the International Conference of Voice Teachers that was held in Helsinki.

He now confines his singing to character roles.

JIMMY DIXON Benny Southstreet Jim m y Dixon began his stage appearances in Wexford.

He spent a year in the CJSA in Up With People and has appeared with many Dublin musical societies.

His R&R appearances include Hello Dolly, Fiddler on the Roof, Kiss Me Kate and as the Major General in The Pirates of Penzance and The Duke of Plaza Toro in The Gondoliers.

Killian has a varied musical background. He played Lt. Cable in South Pacific and featured in Oklahoma!, Brigadoon, Fiddler on the Roof and the Wesley Burrows’ musical Carrie, where he played the leading role of Heloise.

Russell Hogg, at the age of nine played The Engineer in Miss Saigon. He has also had lead roles in Doctor Frankenstein and Jesus Christ Superstar.

He has also taken part in the Gay Byrne Gala Concerts and the Bank of Ireland RTE Proms.

He has appeared with the Society in S h o w Boat where he played the role of Steve Baker.

He previously played Big Jule in Guys and Dolls. His m ost recent part being that of the Mikado in The Hot Mikado.

Russell is lead singer in the rock band Dragon Fly.

John recently completed his studies and graduates shortly with a BA (Hons) in International Marketing with French and German. John’s appearances for the R&R include Will Parker in Oklahoma!, Fyedka in Fiddler on the Roof and soloist in the revue Romberg to Rodgers. With his local youth group Musical Youth Theatre, he has played Roger in Grease and Benjamin Calypso in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Robert’s first show with the R&R was South Pacific in 1996 where he played Lt. Buzz Adams. He has also been involved with the Coolmine Panto Society where he played the lead in a number of pantomines.

Arthur has been- involved in over seventy musical productions since he started at the age of 17.

In that time he was nominated for four AIMS Awards culminating in the Best Supporting Actor Award for Jud Fry in Oklahoma!

His successes on stage include Jupiter in Orpheus in the Underworld, the King in The King and I, Joe in Show Boat and Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof He has competed in four international festivals of light opera and has been the recipient of the Gold Medal for Bass Solo in the Feis Maltiu.

He has directed a number of musicals and was a founder member of the Celbridge Musical Society. Arthur played the part of Judd Fry with the R&R in Oklahoma! in 1999, Captain George Brackett in South Pacific in 1996. He performed in Show Business in the National Concert Hall and was Captain Andy in the R&R production of Show Boat in 1998. Arthur directed Me & l^y Girl with Clane Musical Society.

Arthur’s most recent appearance with the R&R was playing PoohBah in the 2001 production of The Mikado.

During college he was an active member of the Contemporary Players' and Singers’ Society at Dublin City University and featured as a soloist with them.

Television appearaances include The Seven Days o f Creation at the NCH for the RTE Millennium Celebrations.

In May 2000 he played the part of Benny Southstreet in Knocklyon Variety Group’s production of Guys and Dolls in the Civic Theatre, Tallaght.

IMELDA BRADLEY Agatha An active member of the Executive Committee, Imeida, who is well known to R&R audiences as she has appeared in many of the Society’s previous productions

MARGARET O’DALLAIGH General M atilda B. Cartwright Margaret began her stage appearances while in school being directed by Barry Cassin in a number of stage productions. For many years she was part of the Strand Players as actor and director.

Her production of / Do Not Like Thee Doctor Fell won the All Ireland Drama Festival in Athlone in 1981.

While with the Strand Players, Margaret also directed The Sea, Separate Tables and The Country Boy. Margaret served on the Board of the Abbey Theatre from 1978 to 1982.

She has also produced a number of musicals including Showboat, West Side Story and Little May Sunshine which won the premier award at the Bangor Music Festival. Margaret won the Best Supporting Actress award at Waterford’s Light Opera Festival when she played Mama Morton in Chicago for Arthur’s Team

AUDREY NOLAN Mim i Audrey has been dancing since the age of four and has performed at the Gaiety, the Olympia, the National Concert Hall and the Cork Opera House, She first danced with the R&R back in 1990.

RHYS KERRIGAN Angie the Ox Rhys Kerrigan has performed in a variety of R&R productions, one of his favourites being South Pacific in which he played Stewpot.

He has played Pontius Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar and Pharaoh in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
