Welcome to the Gaiety Theatre.

When Mr. C. R Fitzgerald and his colleagues were forming the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society in 1913,1 very much doubt if they could have envisaged that eighty-seven years later and two hundred and seventy-seven productions later, we would still be here! Well, thankfully, we are still here - very much here!!

Now, we are in the year 2000 and our 277th production is Carousel - lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein 11 and wonderful music by Richard Rodgers.

Carousel is the fourth Rodgers & Hammerstein show which the R & R has presented - the previous shows being Oklahoma! in 1957, 1982 and in 1999, South Pacific in 1965, 1972 and in 1998, and The King and I in 1980.

Mention of The King and I recalls to mind yet another of those many great performances of our friend, Brendan McShane, who sadly died in September. We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Maura and to his family.

THE STORY OF

Carousel tells the story of a barker at a carousel called Billy who is sometimes brash and a bully but who knows how to use his charm on all the ladies. He falls in love with and marries the lovely Julie but this infuriates the owner of the Carousel, a vindictive woman called Mrs. Mullin, who is also in love with Billy, and in a fit of jealously she fires him from his job at the Carousel.

Unhappy at being away from the Carousel, Billy rages at Julie until he learns that he is to becom e a father. Although he feels proud, he still cannot express himself and is unable to tell Julie how he feels. When he is alone, however, he sings the very emotional ‘Soliloquy’ in which he speculates about his forthcoming role as a father. To get the money for the child, he agrees to help Jigger, a disreputable sailor, in a robbery, which leads to Billy’s death. He is sent to purgatory for fifteen years, at the end of which time he m eets the starkeeper who tells him he cannot enter heaven until he has redeemed his soul. To do so he will be given the chance to return to earth for one day to perform one good deed. The starkeeper then shows Billy his fifteen-year-old daughter, Louise, and Billy is distressed to discover that she is an unhappy child. He steals a star from Heaven for her, but when he returns to earth and offers her his gift, she refuses to accept it. The exasperated Billy slaps her. She feels no pain, however, for his love has m ade the slap feel like a kiss.

In the final scene, Billy appears at his daughter’s graduation and talks to Louise through Dr. Seldon (starkeeper). Although Louise does not hear him, she somehow gains confidence, and Billy returns to Heaven, having done his good deed.

In 1996 Noel directed/devised D ifferent D ream s on television for RTE and staged The L ast N ig h t o f the Proms and the Viennese N ig h t for the Bank o f Ireland Proms in the RDS. In D ecem ber 1996, Noel directed the Irish prem iere o f Stephen S ondheim ’s Assassins in the Sam uel Beckett Centre.

His recent credits include Frank M cGuinness’s Som eone W ho’ll W atch Over Me, w orld prem iere o f Brian O ’Reilly’s B u s k in ’, C inderella at the Gaiety and M e a nd M y G irl at the O lym pia/C ork Opera House, and recently he w on Best D irector for the Aw ard-w inning M a c k & M abel at the W aterford International Festival o f Light Opera w ith A rth u r’s Team . Noel graduated in 1997 from T rin ity College w ith BA(Mod.) H onours Degree in Dram a and Theatre Studies. After F id d le r on the R o o f and O kla h o m a !, Noel welcom es the opp ortun ity to w ork w ith the R&R again.

Once again he has enjoyed w orking w ith a talented p roduction team and cast, and a very supportive com m ittee, in bringing this vibrant Carousel to fruition.

GEAROID GRANT Gearoid Grant was born in Dublin and graduated with a B.Mus degree from University College Dublin. Since then he has combined a freelance career as conductor with a career in music education. He has conducted all the principal orchestras in Ireland, the National Symphony Orchestra, the RTE Concert Orchestra, the Ulster Orchestra, the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland.

Gearoid devised and continues to present and conduct the acclaimed series M usic in the Classroom which introduces music to 30,000 Irish children annually, with 24 performances at the National Concert Hall in Dublin and in major venues around Ireland. The programme is developed in conjunction with RTE, The Irish Times and the Department of Education. Gearoid Grant has toured in England with the Irish Chamber Orchestra. He has conducted all of Shaun Davey’s m ajor works, and premieres of Shaun Davey’s Relief o f Derry Sym phony in 1989 and his Concerto for Uilleann Pipe performed for the first tim e at Greenwich Festival in London. These works are recorded for Tara Records. He has done a great deal of film work with the Irish Film Orchestra, of which he is Associate Musical Director. No stranger to television and theatre, Gearoid Grant has conducted a wide repertoire ranging from Mozart to Sondheim.

Gearoid has been the conductor of the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland Under 18s since it was formed in 1980 and is a member of the Board of the NYOl. He toured with the Under 18s in Cyprus in 1986 and in Scotland in 1997. He conducted the NYOl at the RTE Proms in 1986. In the summer of 1999 he conducted the NYOl Under 18s in six concert tour in as many days in Denmark finishing at the world renowned Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. The NYOl Under 18s have already been invited to open the British Festival of Youth Orchestras in Edinburgh under his baton on August 11th, 2001.

JACKIE CURRAN OLOHAN Daughter of Josephine Scanlon and Chris Curran, Jackie has distinguished herself as a performer, musician, music director and chorus master. Her musical education thrived under Sr. Agnes Cecilia at St. Mary’s College, Arklow, the College of Music and UCD. She has been Music Director for many show premieres including Zorba, The Hired Man, Most Happy Fella, Anything Goes, Into the Woods, La Cage aux Folles and A Chorus Line. She was awarded Best Music Director at the 1992 Waterford international Festival of Light Opera for her work on Sondheim’s Into the Woods and this, with conducting her father in the production of Annie at the Olympia, she regards as her highlights to date.

Jackie has made many solo appearances in the NCH and works regularly on television and radio. With husband Sean, she sings as part of the group Avoca and works as a backing vocalist on the session scene. She teaches music at Our Lady’s School in Rathnew.

RITA KEALY D ublin-born Rita originally trained and danced w ith the fam ous choreographer Alice Dalgarno. As a professional dancer she appeared in all o f D ublin’s m ajor theatres, in a variety o f shows. She has worked in film s and television, including m any RTE lig h t entertainm ent shows.

Turning to choreography, Rita has worked with countless m usical societies throughout the country. Recognition has com e in the form o f m any endorsements including ‘Best Choreographer’ at the W aterford International Festival of Light Opera on four separate occasions and also similar awards from AIMS. Rita has choreographed several national finalists in the popular John Player T o p s o f the T o w n ’ com petition. M ost recently she has choreographed m any shows and concerts for the Rathm ines & Rathgar Musical Society and the Glasnevin Musical Society at the Gaiety and National C oncert Hall, together w ith the ‘Bank of Ireland Prom s’ for RTE. Her w ork has also been seen on the stages of the Grand Opera House, Belfast and several seasons w ith the lORC at the Cork Opera House. She recently choreographed the very successful M e a nd M y G irl for the lORC at the O lym pia Theatre. Adm ired for the vitality and dedication of her work, Rita has also given w orkshops to a variety o f groups countryw ide. Rita w ould like to thank Ger, her assistant choreographer, for all her help and support over the last few weeks.

JOYCE BYRNE Joyce is a native o f W exford and has recently com pleted an H onours B. Mus. In M usic Perform ance under Jo dy Beggan at the DIT Conservatory o f Music and Drama. She was this year’s winner o f the Plunkett Green Cup for interpretation at the Dubin Feis Ceoil where she has previously won the D erm ot T roy Trophy, The Denis O ’Sullivan Medal and the G erm an G overnm ent Cup. She has also won best female voice at the Arklow M usic Festival. Joyce has been a chorister w ith Opera Ireland and W exford Festival Opera and has perform ed frequently as a recitalist and as a soloist with n um e ro u s ch o ra l g ro up s around the co u n try. Her engagem ents this sum m er included a recital in W exford’s Rowe Street C hurch as part o f the O rgan Plus Sum m er Series and alto soloist fo r M ozart’s C oron atio n M ass in St. N icholas’s C hurch, Galway. In Septem ber this year Joyce was one o f the three singers to receive a bursary from the John M cC orm ack Society o f Ireland and was offered a recital at the Mansion House. Future engagem ents include lunchtim e concerts in b oth D ublin and W exford and soloist for Vivaldi’s G loria in Galway in December.

CLAIRE CREAMER Claire is a native of Mullingar, Co. Westmeatii. She is an honours graduate of St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth where she specialised in performance. During this time she also toured in Germany and was fortunate enough to do solo work there. She continues to study under the guidance of Kathryn Smith. Claire has a love of choral music and has performed extensively with cham ber and church choirs at hom e and abroad. She has been a soloist for BBC’s Songs o f Praise and num erous RTE broadcasts, and has appeared on Theatre N ights as part of the Moore’s Melody Voice of the Year competition.

Previous principal roles include ‘Maria’ in Hermann Bahr’s D as Konzert (Deukuma Drama Society), ‘Laurie’ in O klahom a (Kill Musical Society) and ‘Hodel’ in an award-winning production of Fiddler on the R o o f (also with Kill Musical Society).

MARY FLAHERTY Mary has been interested in singing from an early age. She has studied with Veronica Dunne and Evelyn Dowling in the past and is currently studying with Mary Brennan.

She has performed on num erous occasions including narrator in Jo sep h a n d the A m a zin g Technicolor Dream coat, ‘Golde’ in Fiddler on the R o o f and ‘Maria’ in The S o u n d o f Music.

Mary played the part of ‘Frum a-Sarah’ in the R&R’s production of Fiddler on the R oof and was a soloist in the NCH last season in Celebratioin! A Century o f Song. Mary has recently performed with the Lyric Opera in Suor Angelica and Caualleria Rusticana in the NCH.

MELANIE KEATING Melanie studied speech and drama with Rosalind Lloyd and singing with Professor Paul Deegan at the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

She has worked with many drama groups and musical societies. With the Kilmacud Musical Society she performed the title role in Irene, and for her role as ‘Ado Annie’ in Oklahoma! she was nominated for an AIMS Best Comedienne Award. She won the Best Actress Award in the Arklow Drama Festival for her title role in the Greek tragedy Antigone and played ‘Laura’ in The Glass Menagerie which won the Best Overall Play Award in the festival the following year.

Melanie has taken part in several R&R productions. Her leading roles with the Society inlcude ‘Gertie’ in Oklahoma!, ‘Winnie Tate’ in Annie Get Your Gun, and ‘Tzeitel’ in Fiddler on the R oo f

COLM LALOR C olm came to singing and the stage late, after inju ry ended an athletics career in w hich he had run 31,000 miles. The com petitive sp irit (and lungs) having been established, he began voice training im m ediately w ith Edith Forrest. He has played such tenor roles as ‘C am ille’, ‘Mr. Snow ’, ‘Phillipe’, ‘Frederick’, ‘H ila rio n ’, ‘Sid le Kar’ and others, w ith m ore than a dozen different m usical societies. C olm perform ed only once before with the R&R; he captained th eir Pinafore two years ago in the NCH. Training w ith Sister Peter C ronin, C olm won the tenor solo co m petition in the Feis Ceoil in Centenary Year 1996 and m ade his operatic debut last year playing ‘II M essegero’ in A id a w ith Lyric Opera also at the NCH.

JOE LALOR T his is Joe’s second season w ith the R&R. He is delighted to be playing the part o f ‘T im o n y the Policem an’ in this year’s production o f Carousel. Joe is currently studying m usic with Patricia M cCrory at Bray M usic Centre

TREASA NI MHIOCHA i N Treasa is appearing in C arousel fresh from her perform ance as ‘Mabel N orm a n d ’ in the A rth ur’s Team p ro du ction of M a c k and M ab el, for w hich she received the award for Best Fem ale Perform er at the W aterford International Festival o f L ig h t Opera th is year. W hile studying at T rin ity College, Treasa perform ed w ith the D ublin University M usical and D ram a Society as ‘N ancy’ in O liv e r and ‘Roxie H a rt’ in C hicago. She has also played ‘Mary M agdalene’ in Jesus C hrist Superstar and ‘R uth’ in B ricks a n d Clay. Treasa has appeared w ith the R&R in the NCH and as a dancer in O k la h o m a ! last year. She can next be seen in the NCH as a soloist in the regional AIMS concert.

EAMONN MORPHY Eamonn studied with Gerard Duffy in DIT College of Music.

He has considerable experience in musicals which he enjoys very much.

Eamonn’s previous shows with the R&R include South Pacific in the Gaiety, Show Business and HMS Pinafore in which he played the part of The Boatswain’ in the National C oncert Hall. Eam onn also played ‘Cord Elam ’ in O klahom a! in the Gaiety last year.

ALANA MGRRIN Alana, now fifteen years old, began her stage training with the Billie Barry Stage School at the tender age of seven.

Since then her career has progressed very well and she has featured in many Billie Barry productions as well as enjoying many appearances in Gaiety Pantos including, Mother Goose, Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella. She has also appeared regularly in the National Concert Hall Christmas Shows, and has been part of the backing group for Westlife at the Point Theatre. Her many television appearances include The Late Late Toy Show, Echo Island, Ireland AM on TV3 and The Late Late Show Fashion Awards.

Alana is very proud to have been chosen to play the part of Louise in this production and hopes to follow a career in the perform ing arts on completing her education.

COLM O ’NEILL Colm ’s stage debut was in 1995 with Stillorgan Musical Company in their production of The Pajama Game. Since then he has played many varied roles including T in Man’ in The Wiz, ‘John the Baptist’ in Godspell, and m ost recently ‘Molokov’ in Chess with ESB Music Society. Colm has also sung as a soloist in the National Concert Hall and the Gaiety Theatre. He is currently studying singing with Kenneth Shellard. Colm is delighted to be joining the R&R for their production of Carousel.

GARRY POLLACK Garry graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 1997 with a Diploma in Operatic Art, under the tutelage of Ronald Maconaghie AM. Garry’s performance experience includes musical, opera, oratorio and song repertoire. Roles Garry has performed include ‘Sarastro’ in The M agic Flute, ‘Kecal’ in The Bartered Bride, ‘Mr. P eachum ’ in The B eggar’s Opera, ‘Sim one’ in La finta sem plice, ‘Ben’ in The Telephone and most recently he understudied the role of ‘Dulcamara’ in the Opera Theatre Company’s production of L ’elisir d ’amore.

Garry has been the bass soloist in The M essiah a num ber of times, the most recent performance being at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney in November 1999. He has performed in the chorus with Opera Australia since 1996 in productions of Tannhauser, II Barbiere di Siuiglia, The Pearl Fishers, Cosl fan tutte, Turandot, Elektra, and he was a ‘frati’ soloist in the 1999 production of D on Carlos, conducted by Simone Young. In May this year Garry was a finalist in the Covent Garden National Opera Studio Scholarship in Melbourne, Australia. In November 2000 he will com m ence vocal training with Gwynne Howell.

CONOR SHERIDAN Having adopted a great love for the theatre from a very young age Conor appeared in many local productions in his home town of Wicklow which have included So u th Pacific and Fiddler on the R o o f and more recently ‘Ju d ah ’ in Joseph and th e A m azing Technicolor D ream coat for Myth Productions, Wicklow. This is Conor’s third season with the R&R having previously performed in O klahom a at the Gaiety Theatre last year and m ost recently A Celebration - a Century o f S o n g for the Society’s spring season at the National Concert Hall and is delighted to be playing ‘Enoch Snow Junior’ in this production. Conor joins the cast of Carousel having just com pleted a performance masterclass in the musical Les M iserables in London earlier this year. He continues to study singing with Mary Brennan and is currently a full-time student at the College of Dance in Dublin.

COLIN SMITH Colin has been involved with various drama and musical societies for so long that it is no wonder he has now been dispatched ‘CIp There’.

He has received AIMS nominations for acting and directing and his productions of Oliver and Godspell both won the ‘Spirit of AIMS’ awards. Colin has also gained num erous acting awards on the dram a circuit. He is delighted to be appearing with the R&R this year.

Home-Hewson Bequest This scholarship w ill be awarded to the candidate who: • w ould m ost benefit from a course in dram atic technique and speech training • is already studying singing; and • is prepared to undertake an appropriate course in this field in any establishm ent (in Ireland or the U nited K ingdom ) approved by the Trustees, the Hon. Gen. Secretary and the Musical D irector o f the Society, fo r a period o f no less than three academ ic term s.

The award o f this scholarship shall be made by a select panel o f judges.
