SYNOPSIS Captain Corcoran of H.M.S. Pinafore has a problem. His future depends upon his daughter Josephine’s offer of marriage from the First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Joseph Porter but she is not enthusiastic. Worse, she is actually in love with an ordinary seam an in his crew the the ship’s hero, Ralph Rackstraw.

When the hypocritical Sir Joseph explains that a British Tar is any m an’s equal - except his own - Ralph is em boldened to declare his love for the captain’s daughter.

Repulsed, Ralph determines to com mit suicide but at the last m om ent Josephine intervenes and the lovers, aided by the crew, plan to elope.

The dastardly Dick Deadeye alerts the crew and Ralph is thrown into the ship’s dungeon. But Buttercup, the bum boat woman has a dark secret and before long a convenient revision of the social scale sees everyone suitably partnered for the inevitable happy ending.

HUGH ADLER Hugh Adler was born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, but has lived in Ireland since he was five years old. He has taken drama classes for the last three years and is currently studying with Act One Drama. Hugh is the third generation of his family to perform with the R & R; his grandparents, Ursula and the late Frank Gormley, and his mother, Grainne Gormley, have been involved with the society since the 1950s.

RAYMOND BARROR Ray Barror comes from one of Dublin’s best known musical families and is a leading performer with the R&R, Irish Concert Artists and Glasnevin Musical Society.

His career has embraced Revue, Pantomime, Restoration Comedy and Musicals. He has played leading roles in Gilbert and Sullivan operettas including The Duke of Plaza Toro in The Gondoliers, The Judge in Trial by Jury and his favourite part, Koko in The Mikado. His recent appearances on The Late Late Show showed his comic style to great effect and has resulted in many guest appearances throughout the country.

He toured Ireland recently with Opera Theatre Company’s production of The Dublin Mood adapted by Gerry Stembridge from Wienerblut by Strauss, for which he received exceptional reviews.

JACKIE CURRAN OLOHAN Daughter of Josephine Scanlon and Chris Curran, Jackie has distinguished herself as a performer, musician, music director and chorus master. Her musical education thrived under Sr. Agnes Cecilia at St. Mary’s College, Arklow, the College of Music and (JCD. She has been Music Director for many show premieres including Zorba, The Hired Man, Most Happy Fella, Anything Goes, Into the Woods, La Cage aux Folles and A Chorus Line. She has been awarded Best Music Director at the 1992 Waterford International Festival of Light Opera for her work on Sondheim’s Into the Woods and this, with conducting her father in the production of Annie at the Olympia she regards as her highlights to date.

Jackie has m ade many solo appearances in the NCH and works regularly on television and radio. With husband Sean, she sings as part of the group Avoca and works as a backing vocalist on the session scene. She teaches music at Our Lady’s School in Rathnew.

BRIAN DE SALVO As the surname suggests, Brian m ight have been ‘itai-ian!’ but has to had to confess to Catford, South London as his birthplace, where he grew up to speai< lii<e Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses.

Despite keeping goal fo r England (in a television com m ercial) while playing for Brom ley Reserves his attem pt at soccer stardom failed through lack of stature and courage, although a late comeback with Drumcondra means that he is the only League of Ireland goalkeeper to have directed a play at the Abbey Theatre.

By that tim e Brian had adopted Ireland as his home after com ing to Dublin ‘for three m onths’ in 1968 to write a film script for Michael Klinger. By then he was a prizewinning writer and producer of television commercials working with London advertising agencies and ultimately becoming Chef du Service Television at Havas Conseil in Paris, where he started to direct. In Ireland he became instrumental in setting up the domestic commercials production industry, winning the Irish Grand Prix three times in four years at the Kinsale Advertising Awards Festival during the 70s and directing the first Irish commercial to win a Lion at the Venice Festival. Hundreds of commercials later he came to the conclusion that the only people he really liked were actors so with commendable logic and stunning naivete he decided to become one, thus decimating his income overnight.

In the early 80s he went back to the OK to work in British regional theatre in lieu of the training he never had. Michael Colgan brought him back to the Gate but as a director not actor. Brian’s production o f the Alan Ayckbourne farce Taking Steps immediately established him on the Dublin scene, so much so that when he went on to direct a revival of Hugh Leonard’s Patrick Pearse M otel at the Abbey a critic congratulated the National Theatre on securing the services of such an experienced farce director!

In the subsequent fourteen years Brian has proved to be nothing if not versatile. He comes to HMS Pinafore from directing Ireland’s biggest commercial show, the Gaiety panto M other Goose. Immediately before that he worked at D ublin’s smallest theatre.

Focus, where he added W illiam Inge’s Picnic to notable productions of A View from the Bridge and Men Without Shadows.

Although not a teacher, Brian has worked successfully with Trinity students at the Beckett Centre on productions of The Crucible and Live Like Pigs. Major commercial productions include John B. Keane’s M oll, which still holds the Gaiety box office record for a play, and Bugsy M alone with 92 children which played a Christmas season at the Olympia.

As an actor, Brian de Salvo has appeared in several musicals. He was the original ‘FDR’ in the Irish premiere of Annie at the Gaiety, for Noel Pearson he played ‘El Gallo’ in The Fantasticks and ‘Man 1’ in Jacques Brel, and more recently he was ‘Honeyfitz’ in the illfated JFK at the Olympia. In the CIK he played ‘Benny Southstreet’ in Guys and Dolls at the Wolsey, Ipswich, ‘Sotm ore’ in Lock Up Your Daughters at the Queens, Horchurch and ‘Widow Twankey’ in Aladdin at the Horsham Arts Centre. He was the ‘Rabbi’ in the 1982 West End revival of Fiddler on the Roof.

Since his early days in Catford, Brian has also learned how to refine his accent a little.

This has brought him a lot of voice work on commercials, com puter programmes and documentary films. It has also made him eligible to work with the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society with whom he is delighted to be making his debut in Gilbert and Sullivan.

ANN MARIE GIBBONS Ann Marie Gibbons is currently studying with Mary Brennan at the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, Dublin. She has been a prize-winner at all the major festivals throughout Ireland including the Feis Ceoil where last year she won the Contralto Solo and Margaret BurkeSheridan Cup. Performances to date include alto soloist in Handel’s Messiah in Paris and Burgundy as part of L ’Imaginaire Irlandais with the Trinity Choral Society and also soloist in Judas M accabaeus in Dublin, again with the Trinity Choral Society. Anne Marie has also given solo recitals and concerts including performing at The John McCormack Society of Ireland Annual Concert.

MATTHEW GILSENAN Brought up near Kells, Co. Meath, Matthew Gilsenan began his singing studies in 1988 with Mary Brennan in the College of Music, while completing his Engineering Degree at GCD. He practised Engineering for five years, until his return to singing in 1997, again with Mary Brennan, in the Conservatoire of Music and Drama.

He has been a prize-winner in Feis Ceoil and other music festivals throughout Ireland. Matthew was a finalist in this year’s ‘RTE Singer of the Future’ which was recorded for broadcast on FM3. As a result of this success, he was given m asterclasses by Gundu Janowitz the famous German soprano which were also recorded for future broadcast on FM3.

Matthew has sung mostly on the oratorio, opera and recital platform up until now. He has sung solo roles in Messiah, Various Masses by Mozart, Eugene Onegin, Lucia de Lammermoor, La Boheme, The Merry W idow and The Wedding by the Irish com poser A. J. Potter.

He sings regularly with the National Cham ber Choir as well as the Clarendon Street Church Choir.

GEAROID GRANT Gearoid studied music witFi tFie late Dr. J. O’Reilly in the College of Music and graduated with a B.Mus. from (JCD. Subsequently, he studied conducting with, among others, George Hurst in London. Since then he has worked as conductor, music director and arranger for most Irish theatrical companies in works ranging from Mozart to Sondheim.

At present, he is resident conductor with the R & R. Gearoid has appeared as guest conductor with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Our Lady’s Choral Society, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and the RTE Concert Orchestra.

RITA KEALY Rita was born in Dublin and trained and danced with the famous choreographer Alice Dalgarno. She has choreographed for many musical societies throughout the country and this is her ninth season to work with the R & R. Rita has also worked in films and television including the RTE Proms. She has won many awards for her work including Best Choreographer at the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera on four separate occasions. She has also been awarded Best Choreographer with AIMS. Rita choreographed the Irish Distillers Tops o f the Town which won the National Final on RTE.

COLM LALOR Colm Lalor came to singing and the stage late after an injury ended an athletics career in which he had run 31,000 miles. The competitive spirit having been established he began almost immediately to train as a tenor with Edith Forrest and got his first break as ‘Mr. Snow’ (Carousel) with Kilmacud MS. Since then he has played leading roles - ‘Frederick (Pirates o f Penzance), ‘Hilarion’ (Princess Ida), ‘Camille’ (Merry Widow), ‘Sid el Kar’ (Desert Song), ‘Philippe’ (New Moon), and many others with ten other societies.

Now training with Sr. Peter Cronin, Colm won the Tenor Solo Competition in the Feis Ceoil in Centenary Year 1996 3nd has represented Dundrum Musical Society as a soloist in the AIMS Annual Concert in each of the last three years.

ADAM LAWLOR Adam is deliginted to be asked botin to return to the R & R after an absence of two years, and for the opportunity of woridng with Brian de Salvo.

During his ‘sabbatical’ he has been far from idle, directing Carrie, South Pacific and Oklahoma, appearing in a lavish production of The Merry W idow and the world premiere of S tuff ‘n ’ f^onsense a new musical by Irish conductor Prionnsias 6 Duinn (both for RTE), and also finding tim e to sing oratorio in St. Patrick’s Cathedral for the International Handel Festival.

Adam studied drama at the Brendan Smith Academy and voice at the RIAM and the College of Music. He has made regular appearances on all the m ajor stages and has had several enjoyable and successful forays into the world of films. Favourite stage shows in which he has appeared would have to beJesus Christ Superstar with Colm Wilkinson, Slice o f Saturday N ight - AndrewsLane Theatre Company, and of course Anything Goes with R & R! Adam is the proud recipient o f five Theatre Awards both for com edic and dramatic roles, but his highest accolade to date must be the kick on the shin he received from an incensed 5 year old, after playing the very dastardly Sheriff of Nottingham!

DOROTHY MAXWELL D orothy Maxwell’s vocal tuition includes studies with prestigious musicians including Elisabeth Bishop (The Juilliard School o f Music, New York), Dr. Constance Shacklock OBE, noted sopranos Marion Studholme (Royal College of Music, London), Irene Sandford (Royal Irish Academ y o f Music) and vocal coaches Peter Gelhorn and M alcolm Martineau.

D orothy has achieved many successes in the music world both in Ireland and abroad. She has won the New York Talent Evaluation com petition and was a vocal Finalist in the RTE Young Musician o f the Future com petition. In 1995 and 1997 she represented Ireland at the internationally renowned Belvedere Hans Gabor singing com petition in Vienna.

D orothy has extensive experience on the operatic, oratorio and recital platform . She is a regular perform er at the National Concert Hall with recent performances including the Schubert Mass in A fla t and a recital of operatic arias, lieder and french song. She is no stranger of Gilbert and Sullivan and has performed in productions of the Pirates o f Penzance, lolanthe and The Gondoliers. Dorothy also holds a M.Sc. degree in environm ental science and combines her singing career with a career as an environm ental consultant.

SHEILA M cCa r t h y Sheila studied singing at Cori< Sciiool of Music w itii the late Margaret Dillon and Maeve Coughlan.

She has won all the major awards at Feis Ceoil, Dublin and Feis Maitiu, Cork. She has also been awarded a number of vocal scholarships which enabled her to study with Paul Hamburger and Laura Sarti in London.

Sheila has considerable experience in the fields of oratorio, and recital work. She has sung all over Ireland with Irish choral societies in such works as Bach’s St. M atthew Passion, St. John’s Passion, and Christmas Oratorio; Beethoven’s Masses in D and C; Dvoi^aks’s Requiem Mass, Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Requiem Mass; Handels’ Messiah; Mendelssohn’s E lijah and Vivaldi’s Gloria and Beatus Vir. She has performed in numerous operas with Opera Theatre Company, Cork City Opera and concert performances of opera with the RTE Symphony Orchestra and Concert Orchestra. Her roles include: ‘Hermia’ (Midsummer N ig h t’s Dream), ‘Bianca’ (Rape o f Lucrezia); ‘Mamma Lucia’ (Cavalleria Rusticana); ‘Cherubino’ (The Marriage o f Figaro); ‘Inez’ (II Trouatore) and ‘The Princess’ (Suor Angelica).

Sheila has also performed most of the Gilbert & Sullivan alto and mezzo roles with various musical societies around Ireland. Her work in this genre include roles such as ‘Katisha’ (The Mikado); ‘Dame Carruthers’ {The Yeomen o f the Guard); ‘Lady Jane (Patience) and ‘Dame Hannah’ (Ruddigore).

For the past six years, Sheila has been on the staff of the Samuel Beckett Centre. TCD, teaching singing, and also teaches singing at Newpark Music Centre.

Sheila has also given numerous song recitals all over Ireland.

EAMONN MURPHY Eamonn studied w ith Gerald Murray in the College of Music. He has considerable experience in Musicals which he enjoys every much. Previous roles include McGregor in Brigadoon, ‘Sasha’ in Fiddler on the Roof, ‘Matt in Carrie.

Other leading roles include Lieutenant Danny Gilmartin in C alam ity Jane and Mr. Bumble in Oliver (with Glencullen Musical Society). Eamonn’s previous shows with the R & R include South Pacific in the Gaiety and S how Business in the National Concert Hall.

EOIN O’NEILL Eoin began singing when in primary school where he won awards for sean-nos singing. His first musical role was playing Lord Mount Ararat in the University of Dundee’s 1996 production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s lolanthe.

He joined the R & R last September as a member of the black chorus in the R & R’s production o f Showboat.
