Looking back over o u r 82-year history we have done so m any shows that we had quite a task to choose those w hich we felt you w ould enjoy. Let's hope we’ve got it right!

The pace of life is getting quicker, the weather has been awful, the cost o f living continues to soar b u t we like to think th at One E n c h a n g e d E ve n in g offers you a means o f escape for a short while into the realm s o f m usic and rom ance.

We are very happy, as you will be, to w elcom e back som e o f our soloists w hom you have heard and enjoyed before. It has always been our policy in the R & R to foster young talent and on this occasion we also have am ong our soloists some who are singing with the R & R for the first tim e. We know you will enjoy them and we hope th a t they will spend m any happy years w ith us.

As for the future, we in the R & R plan to hold our place in the hearts and m in ds o f m usical D ublin and continue to brighten yo ur evenings as we have done for so long. T alking o f the future, we again lo o k forw ard to M y F air L a d y in Novem ber, bringing us back to the Gaiety Theatre.

Heather Heivson

Founded

A ppreciation Heather Home Hewson W hen the history o f late 20th century m usical theatre in D ublin is written, Heather Hewson’s nam e m ust figure prom inently in any such chronicle.

F rom an alm ost unconscionably early age, Heather, daughter o f the late Dr. George Hewson and the actress Mable Home, was a perform er who b rought to every role she played - and, in m any instances, created for Irish audiences - a truly form idable dedication and intellectual (in its proper m eaning) perspective.

N ot fo r her mere concentration on lines and m usic notes. Instead, th o r­ ough research and back-ground reading w hich would better enable her to interpret and portray characters as their originators intended. We - those who w orked w ith her on stage and her very m any fans - were the lucky beneficiaries.

And that was but one aspect o f her m ulti-faceted life. Professionally she spent m any years in the em ploy o f the Guinness brewery. After an early retirem ent, she devoted herself to academ ia and proudly - despitfe the adversity o f her initial illness - carried o ff an eagerly sought and well-earned m oderatorship in M usic and D ram a Studies, awarded to her

by T rinity College, D ublin in 1988.

W hilst so doing, she continued as chorus m aster o f the Rathm ines and Rathgar M usical Society. (She used the appellation “Master” deliberately “I will n o t be ‘m istress’ to an entire chorus o f lusty m en.” Yes! This was Heather’s entirely individual brand o f zany hum our.) In addition, she was a som etim e conductor o f T rinity College M usical Society; b u t her first love, the theatre and concert stage, was the dom in an t and enduring force.

In a protracted illness, she dem onstrated courage and determ ination w hich truly confounded her friends. In death we rem em ber - oh so fondly - the m any, diverse and entirely lovable qualities w hich were the sum o f the parts o f a dear friend w hom we will never forget.

SINEAD BRENNAN This young 20-year-old has appeared in numerous productions to date. She has always had a keen interest in the theatre from an early age and is the youngest member o f a very musical family. The first show Sinead acted in was S h o w Boat with Dundrum Musical Society, playing the role of Kim. She returned to Dundrum in February ’94 to take the leading role of Margot in The Desert Song. In fact the last three years have been extremely busy for Sinead having played roles in Fiddler on the Roof, Salad Days, Godspell and Grease with the Xavier Goodwin School o f Drama.

Last year Sinead played the role of Magnolia in S how Boat with the W exford Light Opera Society. She is also a member o f Bull Alley Theatre Company where she has received most o f her training. Her roles have included Martirio in The House o f Bernarda Alba, Boy and Observer in Pacific Overtures, and Astrid in Larry Grossman's musical play A D oll's Life. She is currently in rehearsals for The Children's Hour. She is delighted to be working with the R & R.

AIDAN CONWAY

Aidan has been involved in musicals since 1991, his first role being Samuel in The Pirates o f Penzance. Since then he has undertaken such roles as Curley in Oklahom a, Perchik in Fiddler on the R oof Joe Cable in South Pacific and Sky Masterson in Guys an d Dolls. Most recently he played the role o f Anthony Hope in ESB's production o f Sweeney Todd at the National Concert Hall. He has participated in the Gay Byrne Gala Concerts ant the recent AIMS Concert at the Mansion House.

In May Aidan will play Tony in Bray Musical Society's produc­ tion of West Side Story.

JACKIE CGRRAN OLOHAN Jackie Curran Olohan, daughter o f Josephine Scanlon and Chris Curran, has dintinguished herself as a performer, musician, music director and chorus master with many leading societies in Ireland. She teaches music in Our Lady's School, Rathnew. She has also been m usic director with D.A.Y.M.S, and won the award as Best Music Director at the Waterford Light Festival of Music for her work on Sondheim ’s Into the Woods.

She has performed as soloist in many A.I.M.S. concerts, as backing vocalist for RTE and with leading artists on albums and CDs. Her television appearances include K enny Live, Eurosong, Live at Three, S unday N ight a t the O lym pia, B ib i and The B ig Top. With her husband Sean, she has written and performed many of their own works with their group Avoca, and regularly works in Germany, Switzerland, and m ost recently, Holland - in the floods!

The highlight of her career to date was as acting Music Director for A n n ie at the Olympia Theatre which afforded her an opportunity of “conducting” her dad for the first time.

JIMMY DIXON Jim m y began his stage appearances with Wexford Light Opera Society, playing a variety of parts. Following this he spent a year touring the USA, Canada and South America with the international musical group "(Jp With People� .

Over the past ten years he has taken leading roles with many societies and guested with Anglo Irish Bank on the nationally televised Tops o f the Town final.

Appearances with the R & R include Motel in Fiddler on the Roof, Cornelius in Hello D o lly and the Jester/Compere in A Song to Sing O! at the NCH. Most recently he appeared as the Major-General in The Pirates o f Penzance.

GERALDINE FARRELL Geraldine started her stage training at the Billie Barry Stage School at the age of 5. Since then she has performed in numerous shows both dancing and playing leading roles. This is Geraldine’s eighth appearance with the R & R and she is delighted to be appearing with them once again.

GEAROID GRANT Qearoid studied music with the late Dr. J. O'Reilly in the College of Music and graduated with a B.Mus. from (JCD. Subsequently, he studied conducting with, among others, George Hurst in London. Since then he has worked as conductor, music director and arranger for m ost Irish theatrical companies in works ranging from Mozart to Sondheim.

At present, he is resident conductor with the R & R. Gearoid has appeared as guest conductor with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Our Lady's Choral Society the National Symphony Orchestra and the RTF Concert Orchestra.

AISLING GREEN A isling has been 'treading the boards’ from an early age, dancing fro m the age o f fou r and appearing in her first m usical at the age o f eleven. In recent years she has worked with m any m usical societies in D ublin and beyond, p e rfo rm ing such diverse roles as Julie in Carousel, Kathy in S in g in ' in the R ain, M abel in The Pirates o f Penzance, Nellie F orbush in S o u th P acific and Eliza in M y F a ir Lady. She was nom inated as best fem ale singer for her role o f Fiona in B rig a d o o n at the W aterford International Festival o f L ig h t Opera in 1992. A isling has also com p eted successfully in both the Feis Ceoil and Feis M aitiu. Her radio and television appearances include The G ay B y rn e S h o w Gala, The Rose o f Tralee F estival C oncerts and The Late La te S h o w . Aisling has appeared with the R & R in m any p ro du ctions including F idd ler o n the R o o f in w hich she had the great h o no ur o f playing the daughter o f the late Heather Hewson.

EGGENE GRIFFIN D u blin-bo rn Eugene is m uch in dem and as a soloist by choral societies. He has worked with D ublin C ounty Choir, Culw ick C horal Society and TC D C horal Society am o ng st others. His repertoire ranges from the Pirate K ing in The Pirates o f P enzance to Haydn's The Seasons. Eugene is a past m em b er o f the RTE C ham ber C hoir and the Palestrina Choir, and at present is a lay vicar choral in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin.

He studies w ith Evelyn D ow ling in the C ollege o f M usic, Dublin.

T his is E ugene’s first tim e pe rfo rm in g with the R & R and we wish him well and hope to see m ore o f h im in the future.

MARINA KEALY M arina started dancing at the very early age o f three years.

She has danced in all the m ajor theatres in Ireland and on television. She has danced in m any R & R pro du ctions over the past five years. O ver the past three years M arina has developed her career and has choreographed a nu m b e r o f leading D ublin m usical societies. T his is M arina's first appearance w ith the R & R on the other side o f the foo tligh ts as assistant to the D irector/C horeographer.

RITA KEALY Rita was born in Dublin and commenced her dance career at the very early age of four when appearing at the Theatre Royal in Robinson Crusoe with Moel Purcell.

Rita subsequently became a Royalette and trained un­ der Alice Dalgarno. She has worked on many films and on television.

Rita has choreographed for many of the Dublin musical societies and has won many awards for her work, includ­ ing Best Choreographer at Waterford International Festi­ val of Light Opera on four separate occasions for Annie Get Your Gun, Guys and Dolls, Mac and Mabel, all with SMDS and George M with Guinness Musical Society.

She has also been awarded Best Choreographer with AIMS and Tops of the Town.

She has choreographed Anglo Irish Banks in 1989 Tops national final and is currently choreographer to Irish Distillers Tops, which won the Dublin and National Finals in 1991.

She has both staged and choreographed previous productions with the R & R. Her next production will be The King and I, in Cork.

PAGL KELLY Paul Kelly studies with Dr. Veronica Dunne at the College of Music, Dublin and has won many prizes for his singing including the John McCormack Cup at the Feis Ceoil. Paul has sung roles in operas by Handel, Mozart, Smetena and Poulenc and has many roles to his credit in light opera. Equally at home on the concert platform, he had given several song and lieder recitals and has regularly featured in performances of oratorio.

He is well known to Dublin audiences for his appearances with the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society for whom he has sung Col. Fairfax, Nanki Poo and Frederick in the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire as well as appearing in several of its concerts at the National Concert Hall.

LCICY LANE One of the longest-playing members of the Society - playing in many of the Society’s concerts at the National Concert Hall and in the Gaiety Theatre productions.

She has played the whole range of female parts in the Q & S repertoire - soprano, mezzo and finally the “heavies”.

Her last appearance was at the NCH in a “Gilbert & Sullivan Evening” in January of this year.

PETER LEWIS Peter has won gold medals as a Feis soloist and has sung principal parts with the R & R and other musical societies for many years. He took part in the Qay Byrne Gala Concerts, and makes regular appearances in local pantom im es and cabaret.

A soloist on the Curtain Call CD a num ber of years ago, and in the recent autum n production of The Pirates o f Penzance.

Most recently he appeared as soloist with the Eastern Region AIMS Concert in the Mansion House.

ELLEN McELROY Ellen has been involved in shows since the age of ten in a variety of styles. Since then she has appeared with Guinness Musical Society, played lead roles with Telecom Eireann Variety Group (G. M. Cohan, Tops o f the Town), An Post Musical Society and County Council Variety Group. Guest artist for Cream of the County Finals in the Gaiety for two consecutive years. Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar, Coolmine, Louisa in The So und o f Music, Olympia, Maria in West Side Story, Stillorgan Musical Society, Ellie in S h o w Boat, Coolmine, Maria in West Side Story, Athlone Musical Society which travelled to Waterford for the Light Opera Festival ’94.

Sang in the Sligo Arts Festival ’94 with the Leinster Opera Studio.

Ellen is studying Performance under Neville Carlyle Styles at Bull Alley, piano in the College of Music and voice training under Dr. Veronica Dunne at the Leinster School of Music.

ENDA QGAIN Enda has been taking part in shows for the last 10 years both as a singer and a dancer. He has appeared in all the major theatres in Dublin, on television in four national finals of John Player Tops, The Late Late S h o w and the Bank oflreland/RTE Proms. His first role with the R & R was as Horatio in A nything Goes at the Gaiety. More recently he played the lead role in the AIB Musical Society's production of The Pyjama Game. He is currently studying voice production with Peter McBrien.

ANNE MARIA SMITH A nne Maria is one o f Ireland’s m ost talented singers w ith a repertoire ranging from Handel to Puccini, from S chubert to Sondheim .

She has appeared w ith all the m ajor orchestras and com p a­ nies in Ireland and in the last few years has m ade her Am erican, Spanish, Belgian and Italian debuts.

Operatic roles include Poppea in M onteverdi’s L ’Incoranazione d i Poppea and Donna Anna in Mozart’s D o n G iovanni. She is no stranger to the world o f shows where she has played parts such as Eliza in M y F air l^ d y , Kate in Kiss M e Kate and Julie in S h o w Boat C oncert perform ances are a regular feature o f her w o rk w ith program m es as diverse as M ozart Masses, Viennese E ve n in g s and B ro a d w a y Hits.

Recently Anne M aria’s reputation has earned her a grow ing schedule o f perform ances with a wide range o f clients in clud in g m em bers o f the diplo m a tic corps and m an y state, sem i-state and to p corporate organisations.
