Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society We in thie R & R hiave celebrated 80 years of unbroken presentations on the Dublin stage and one thing which has remained unchanged over the years, however, is the continued affection for the R & R which became everyone’s favourite back in the nineteen hundreds and still remains way out in front eighty years later.

Now in the autumn of 1994, we trust our audiences will permit us to entertain and involve them in the continuation of our success.

For many of us music is the highlight of our lives and looking back over the last 50 years in particular, we have seen extraordinary changes and much development in entertainment due to radio and television. Clp to then all music came from opera, classical and popular sources. We in the R & R concentrated on Gilbert & Sullivan and many of the newer current musical comedies of the more distinguished of which were The Student Prince, Bitter Sweet, Dancing Years, O klahom a and South Pacific, with Irish premieres of The Merry Widow, My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the R oof and Gigi.

Over the years we have presented many young artists who have played leading roles, going on to achieve further success, and to this we mention the strength of our Chorus which adds so much to our spectacular presentations with full sets, costumes and orchestra.

This evening we present The Pirates o f Penzance and we hope to bring you many magical moments well into the future.

The Pirates Penzanace

Last presented by the Society in 1984, this is the roilicidng tale of pirates and beautiful maidens meeting on a quiet Cornish shore - the girls being suitably terrified at first, but later changing their opinions.

The premiere was in Mew York on New Year’s Eve 1879, when it swept the city off its feet. Its official first night was in the Opera Comique in London on April 3, 1880.

There is some lovely singing by the girls in the early scenes, and Mabel’s solo “Poor Wandering One” is considered to be the m ost challenging of all the soprano solos in the Gilbert and Sullivan group.

Ruth, maid-of-all-work to the pirates, tells them that Frederick, their leader is now 21, and is free to leave piracy forever, but they want him to stay. Ruth is worried because of having apprenticed him in his early days, to a pirate instead of a pilot The father of all the girls - the colourful Major General - saves his daughters from the apparently scheming men by telling them that he is an orphan, and therefore claims special treatment. The Major General’s song “1Am The Very Model Of A Model Major General” is another in the distinguished library of Gilbert’s patter songs - greatly to be enjoyed.

An outstanding chorus number, attaining to higher things, is Hail Poetry.

The future looks bright and Mabel and Frederick are free to marry.

A ct II is almost completely dominated by the policemen and their various songs and hilarious activities. There is a furious battle between them and the pirates, until Ruth comes along with another solution and all ends well.

PATRICK CAMPBELL Pat Campbell has now completed his 50th year in the R & R. He is recognised for playing the comic roles in the Gilbert & Sullivan operas, character parts in a variety of musicals and as compere for the Society’s concerts and social events.

Pat has served for many years on committees and was Gener­ al Secretary o f the R & R from 1974-1986.

In 1988 he was a recipient of a Millennium Award presented by the Lord Mayor of Dublin ‘for outstanding achievement in light music’.

Pat is the Assistant Director for this presentation of The Pirates o f Penzance.

JIMMY DIXON Jim m y began his stage appearances with Wexford Light Opera Society, playing a variety of parts. Following this he spent a year touring the (JSA, Canada and South America with the international musical group “(Jp With People”.

Over the past ten years he has taken leading roles with many societies and guested with Anglo Irish Bank on the nationally televised Tops o f the Town final.

Appearances with the R & R include Motel in Fiddler on the R oof Cornelius in Hello D olly and the Jester/Compere in A Song to Sing O! at the NCH.

SIOBHAN FAWSITT Siobhan is from Wexford and moved to Greystones twelve years ago where she became involved with the Greystones Operatic & Dramatic Society. She has played a lot o f leading roles with them including Katisha in The Mikado and Eliza in My Fair Lady.

She has worked most recently with Kevin Hough’s Theatre Mights concerts, both on the Late Late Show and in the Rose of Tralee Festival. She has appeared as soloist in the most recent AIMS concerts.

Siobhan has also worked with Kilmacud and DAYMS and is looking forward to her role as Ruth in The Pirates o f Penzance with the R & R.

DOREEN FINN A graduate of GCD, Doreen has studied music and drama from an early age. This is her second appearance with the R & R, having participated in Hear Our Songs earlier this year.

g e a r 6 id g r a n t Gearoid studied music with the late Dr. J. O ’Reilly in the College of Music and graduated with a B.Mus. from OCD. Subsequently, he studied conducting with, among others, George Hurst in London. Since then he has worked as conductor, music director and arranger for most Irish theatrical companies in works ranging from Mozart to Sondheim.

At present, he is resident conductor with the R & R . Gearoid has appeared as guest conductor with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Our Lady’s Choral Society the National Symphony Orchestra and the RTE Concert Orchestra.

ANNA JENNINGS Anna, a graduate in music from Maynooth, performed her first opera at the age of fifteen, the mother in A m ahl and the Night Visitors, and has been on stage since. She has played the leading roles in musicals such as A nnie Get Your Gun, Carousel, S o u th Pacific, The Merry W idow and many other musicals and operettas.

Since coming to Dublin in 1989, Anna has played Queen of the Night and First Lady in excerpts from operas in the John Player Theatre with DGOS. She has sung with the RTE Chamber Choir, given recitals and appeared as soprano soloist in perfor­ mances of Carmina Burana; a premiere of Children o f the Last M usic (Gerard Victory) at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham; and played Fiordiligi in Cosi Fan Tutte (Young Dublin Opera). She has been soprano soloist for Mozart’s Requiem , Bach’s Cantata 140 and has given solo concerts in Belfast and Donegal. Anna has studied in London with vocal coach Elizabeth Hawes and repetiteurs David Harper and Paul Hamburger.

CAROLINE KEANE Caroline studied singing with Irene Thompson at the College of Music, Ballyfermot. She has won several prizes at Arklow and Feis Maitiu as well as having an AVCM Diploma in Piano.

Caroline took part in Gay Byrne’s production of Oklahoma in 1991; and Gala Concert in 1992. She joined the R & R in 1992 and took part in Mad About Musicals, The Mikado and played one of the angels in Anything Goes.

For the past two years Caroline and her husband have been singing in various golf clubs and restaurants.

PAUL KELLY Paul Kelly was bom in Dublin and studied singing with Dr. Veronica Dunne at the College of Music. He has won many prizes for his singing including the John McCormack Cup at the Feis Ceoil and appears regularly at the National Concert Hall and on RTE Television and Radio. Equally at home on the concert platform and the stage, he has appeared in leading roles in operas by Mozart, Smetana and Poulenc as well as in oratorio.

He has also appeared with Wexford Festival Opera and at the Waterford Festival of Light Opera where he won an award for 'Best Male Voice’. He sang the role of Fairfax in The Yeomen o f the Guard with the R & R at the Gaiety in 1991 and that of Nanki-Poo in the Mikado at the NCH in 1993. He has also had a success as Ravenal in the College of Music’s production of

Show Boat.

ADAM LAWLOR Adam studied singing at the RIAM before transferring to the College of Music and piano with Kathleen Louden.

He has sung principal parts in HMS Pinafore, lolanthe. The Pirates o f Penzance, The Mikado, The Gondoliers and Kiss Me, Kate - he is better known for his performances in modern rock musicals of which Jesus Christ, Superstar, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and The Mew Mikado are his personal favourites (incidentally all were directed with great aplomb by Cathal MacCabe).

However, it is for his work as rehearsal pianist/performer with the Shelagh Musical Society in Crossmaglen, Co. Armagh, that Adam is proudest, proving that through music there really are no boundaries.

PETER LEWIS Peter Lewis studied singing with Frank Cowle, and won Feis Ceoil gold medals in 1973 and 1974. Since then he has sung many principal roles with the R & R, mainly in Gilbert & Sullivan.

Of these the most notable would be Pish Tush in The Mikado on several occasions, and the Bosun in HMS Pinafore on two occasions.

Also a regular contributor as principal to the concert reper­ toires, at Mt. Argus, Kilkenny Castle and King’s Hospital.

CATHAL MacCABE Cathal MacCabe was born in Derry and educated there at St. Columba’s College and in Queens University Belfast where he took degrees in chemistry, music and psychology.

He joined the music staff of RTE in 1969 and worked on a wide variety of programmes. He was appointed Controller of Radio 2 FM in 1985 and in 1988 became Head of Music where he has responsibility for the entire music output of RTE Radio including the National Symphony Orchestra and the RTE Concert Orchestra.

He first became interested in the theatre when he played piano for his father’s rehearsals and continued to work first as a music director and later as a producer. Among the Irish premieres he has worked on were Irene, George M, A Little N ight Music, Man o f La M ancha and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

ROBERT McKEVITT Robert McKevitt joined the R & R in 1978, but was already an experienced performer with many o f the Dublin and Belfast musical societies from as long ago as 1949.

With the R & R Robert has been more prominent in the bass Q & S roles, and has also appeared in many of the R & R’s presentations at the NCH.

JOANNE O’HAGAN A graduate of dram a studies from Trinity College Dublin, Jo an n e studied vocal studies with Deirdre Grier-Delaney in the College of Music.

In recent years Jo a n n e has directed and produced several musicals for Dublin University Musical & Dramatic Society in Trinity College including M y Fair Lady, Tin Pan Ali and Oliver.

Jo an n e is currently working in the field of television and film production, and is delighted to be making her second appear­ ance with the R & R.

JACKIE CURRAN OLOHAN Jackie Curran Olohan, daughter of Josephine Scanlon and Chris Curran, has dintinguished herself as a performer, musician, music director and chorus m aster with m any leading societies in Ireland. She teaches music in Our Lady’s School, Rathnew.

She has also been m usic director with D.A.Y.M.S and won the award as Best Music Director at the Waterford Light Festival of Music for her work on Sondheim ’s Into the Woods.

She has perform ed as soloist in many A.I.M.S. concerts, as backing vocalist for RTE and with leading artists on album s and CDs. Her television appearances include Kenny Live and Eurosong ’94. She and her husband Sean have written and perform ed m any of their own works in their group Avoca, who, following their recent Live a t Three appearance have been invited to perform for Bavarian Television later this month.

JOYCE HANNAH RICHARDSON Joyce began her dancing career at the Myrtle Lambkin School of Dance, here in Dublin. Subsequently, she moved to London to com plete her formal training at the CJrdang Academy of Ballet & Performing Arts, Covent Garden. Joyce has appeared in num erous productions, both stage and television, in the CJK, Europe and, of course, Ireland. Immediately after graduating from the Grdang Academy, Joyce toured Europe with US productions of West S id e Story and Jesus Christ Superstar.

Roles in various forms of theatre followed, including musical and pantom im e perform ances in both the UK and Ireland, as well as television shows. Jo y ce’s teaching and choreography career began whilst still training - which itself included the acquisition of formal teaching qualifications - and has taken m any forms over the past few years.

She has both choreographed and perform ed in several Christmas pantom im es at the Gaiety Theatre, and will do so again in the forthcoming production of Cinderella. Joyce has taught dance - and choreographed a num ber of productions - at Colaiste Dhulaigh School and various fringe theatre com panies. Her m ost recent perform ance has been in Aida at the Point Theatre.

She is particularly pleased to have been involved with the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society for the first tim e in the current production of The Pirates o f Penzance. Joyce lives in Sandycove with her husband, Chris, and her cat and dog, Sam ui and Lady.

4. Associate Members take a major role in the affairs of the Society; they elect two of their members to the Executive Committee annually. The Associate Members representatives are Mrs. Barbara Graham and Mr. Oliver Hill.

The crippling financial costs involved in presenting two Seasons of shows each year could put the financial viability of the Society in jeopardy except for the loyal support of the active members, the associate members, our friends and the public.
