Lerner & Loewe T h e 1950s brought about m any lavish musicals. M ost cost a staggering am o u n t o f money. But it was not m oney that m ade musicals m e m orable - it was zest and enthusiasm . O n e partnership that provided such successful ingredients in all their shows was that of Alan Jay Lerner, lyricist and F rederick (Fritz) Loew e, com poser. T o g e th e r they produced m an y fam ous shows, all w ithout exception proved stunning shows full to th e brim with zest and enthusiasm .

L e rn e r and Loew e was to becom e a partn ership that enriched the A m e ric a n musical theatre with Brigadoon (1947) Paint Y o u r W agon (1951) C am elot (1960) - and the show which was perhaps re now ned as L e r n e r an d L o e w e ’s best, M y Fair L a d y (1956).

T h ese lavish rom antic p eriod pieces becam e big budget H ollyw ood m ovies with scripts by L e rn e r, and an o th er nostalgic costum e epic Gigi (1958) was created directly for the screen. T heir style of show eventually w e n t o ut of fashion. T heir songs never did. “T h a n k F(eavens for Little G irls” , “If E v e r I W ould leave Y o u ” , “They Call the W ind M a ria ” and “I ’ve G row n A ccustom ed to her F a c e ” .

T h e opening night of M y Fair lady was one of the most incredible occasions th a t even B roadw ay has ever witnessed. The applause at curtain-fall exploded like nuclear fission and the m em bers of the audience rose from their seats and surged forw ard down the aisles crying “B ra v o ” .

A la n Jay L e rn e r died in 1986, 1500 people gathered on B roadw ay to b id farewell to the m aestro w here historian A rth u r Schlesinger paid trib u te to this g reat lyricist. “Few m en in o u r melancholy age brought so m uch pleasure to so m any p e o p le ” . Fritz Loew e sent a letter addressing L e r n e r “It w o n ’t be long b e fore w e’ll be w riting together again. I just h o p e th ey ’ve a decent piano up t h e r e ” . L oew e died aged 87 last F e b ru a ry - this p a rtnership m ay be gone b u t they have left a heritage of rom antic m elodies which we will continue to enjoy with pleasure.

R&R at 75 In 1988 the R & R celebrates the 75th anniversary of its foundation in 1913. D uring those 75 years the Society has staged a wealth of musical e ntertainm en t and has e arne d for itself a very respected place in the hearts of the people of Ireland. A lthough it has been particularly associated with Gilbert & Sullivan, its productions have included all the o th e r great operettas and musicals. In addition, the Society has p resented very many special concerts on stage, radio and television.

This week of concerts in the National Concert Hall, with some 85 m e m b e rs of the Society on stage, is part of the intense program m e o f musical activity presently undertaken by the Society to mark its anniversary. This com m enced with the 75th A nniversary Scholarship Schem e, Show boat in the Gaiety T h e atre in N ovem ber last, the 75th A nniversary Celebration Concert in M ou nt Argus Church, lecture by R o b e rt McCullough in the R .D .S . on “The History of the R & R ” and Su nday Night at the O lym pia on T V in Ja nu ary, and The Magic o f Lerner & Loew e. It is o u r intention to present Fiddler on the R o o f in the Gaiety in N ovem ber and there are o the r concerts and functions sc hedule d during the rem ain d e r of this year.

O u r rehearsal room s at 67/69 U p p e r Rathm ines R o a d were seriously da m a g ed by fire on 17th D e c e m b e r, 1987, which was a set-back for the Society. W e would like to thank ou r many friends who expressed their c oncern, support and e nc ou ra ge m e nt and premises were immediately placed at the disposal of the Society so that o ur rehearsal prog ram m e was able to continue w ithout interruption the very next night.

T he great tradition in the R & R of discipline, hard work and c o m m itm e nt to the highest artistic standards has enriched the p ro d u c­ tions of the Society for the past 75 years. We are dedicated to ensure th a t this continues into the future and that it will always be a m ark of significant achievement and a source o f pride for a singer to claim "I sang with the R & R ” .

Glynis has p e r fo r m e d as an actress an d singer in m an y m usical and d ram atic socities in Irelan d an d in ca b a re t an d has w on th e A I M S A w a r d for Best C o m e d i e n n e twice. She has t o u r e d A u s tralia twice singing Irish Songs o n R a d io a n d T V a n d has also p e r fo r m e d in India, N e w Z e a l a n d and A m erica. She p r e s e n te d h e r own R a d io Show “Y o u n g W orld of M usic" with A u stralian B ro ad cas tin g Com m issio n in Sydney for 2 years. W ith the R & R she has played such roles as R u th in Pirates K atisha in M ik a d o , an d A u n t Alicia in Gigi.

JOH N ALLEN J o h n A lle n has p r o d u c e d sh ow s for m o st o f th e M usical Societies in D u b lin . In 1982 his p ro d u ctio n of F l o t o w ’s o p e r a M artha for St. J o h n 's Musical Society w on a n u n e q u a lle d eleven m a jo r aw ard s including th e I n t e rn a tio n a l T r o p h y at th e W a t e r f o rd Festival o f L ig ht O p e r a .

J o h n last w o r k e d with the R & R in 1986 w hen he co m piled a n d sc ripted th eir p r e se n ta tio n at the N C H of A n E ven in g with R ogers a n d H art a n d H a m m e r ste in .

GEAROID GRANT G earoid G ran t studied piano with the late Dr. J. O 'R eilly in the College of Music and graduated with a B. Mus. D egree from U C D . Subsequently he studied conducting with, am ong others. G eorge Hurst in L ondon.

Since then he has w orked as conductor, musical direc足 tor and arranged for most Irish theatrical companies in works ranging from M ozart to Sondheim . At present he is resident conductor with the R & R. G earo id has a p p eared as guest conductor with the Irish C h a m b e r O rchestra. O u r L ady's Choral Society and both the R T E Sym phony and Concert Orchestras.

TED RYAN T ed R yan needs little introduction to R & R audiences, having sung most of the Gilbert and Sullivan tenor leads with the Society. A form er student o f the Royal Irish A cadem y and the Municipal School o f Music w here he studied u n d e r Michael O 'H iggins and V eronica D u n n e respectively, his repetoire embraces b o th G ra n d O p era and O ratorio. A form er w inner of the M ale Voice at the W aterford Festival of Light O pera.

AUDREY KANE A u d re y last ap p eared with the R & R as Titti-Sing in o u r 1985 production of The M ikado. She is currently stu d y in g singing w ith P aul D e e g a n at the R .I .A .M . A p ast pupil o f H oly F aith . H a d d in g to n R o a d , she m ade h e r musical d e b u t playing A n n a in The K ing an d I an d L a u rie in O k la h o m a in their jo in t p ro d u ctio n s with M a ria n C o lle g e . She has a p p e a r e d with n u m ero u sm u s ic al societies b o th in D u b lin a n d W a te rfo rd .

R O B E R T M c K E V IT T R o b e rt McKevitt joined the R & R in 1978 as Sgt. Meryll in Y eom an o f l h e Guard, but was already quite an experienced p erfo rm er having m ade his debut in the Gaiety T h eatre as long ago as 1949 with Old Belvedere Musical and Dram atic Society. He has ap peared in vari­ ous roles with m any o f the Dublin musical societies.

With the R & R . Bob has been more prom inent in the Bass G & S roles, but his most recent appearance with the Society was as Joe in Showhoal last November.

B o b says he is very p ro u d to be a se co n d gen eratio n R & R m e m b e r as his fath er was with the Society in the 1920s.

M A R IA N DUANE M arian is a m e m b e r o f the well k n o w n D u a n e family o f singers. A music g r ad u ate o f U C D . she has a p p e a r e d with m any musical societies. M a rian last p erfo rm ed with th e R & R as Gigi in th e ir pro d u ction ot this sh o w in 1986. to great critical acclaim.

With the latt er he has had much success in D o n Carlos. Figaro in The B arber o f Seville a n d Sharpless in M a d a m e Bullerfly to nam e but a few. H e also b r oa d ca s ts regularly with R T F on bo th radio a nd television. In 1986 he travelled to the Un it ed States a n d L o nd on to sing on the con cert platform with con si der ab le success.
