RODGERS, HART and HAMMERSTEIN Richard Rodgers, writer of songs, met Lorenz Hart, writer of lyrics, in 1919. Rodgers was 16 and H art 24.

T here began then a partnership that was to last for twenty-four years, until H art’s untimely death in 1943, by which time they had written 19 shows together.

The Girl Friend and A Connecticut Yankee were the most successful of their early works, but from 1936 to 1940 are considered their golden years which included The Boys From Syracuse (a musical version of Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors).

In 1940, John O ’Hara, the famous novelist, asked the partners to use his story of Joey Evans as a plot for a musical. So excited were they at the prospect that they booked the leads — Gene Kelly and Vivienne Segal — before they wrote the story. They then produced Paljfoey which opened on December 25, 1940.

O n its revival, twelve years later, it had the longest run of any of their plays.

Unfortunately Larry H art did not live to see its revival.

In 1942 came the first exploratory discussions on Oklahoma (based on Lynn Rigg’s G reen Grow the Lilacs) a simple story of cowboys and farmers living in that part of the country known as Indian territory.

H art pulled out for health reasons and made Rodgers free to co-opt a new partner — Oscar Hammerstein.

Oklahoma opened on March 31, 1943 and ran for five years on Broadway.

T here followed State Fair and in due course. Carousel — the latter having the memorable songs — If I Loved You, You’ll Never Walk Alone, It’s a Grand Night for Singing and the poignant Soliloquy.

O f all his works Rodgers considered Carousel to be his finest score.

Next came South Pacific, inspired by James Michener’s book (Tales of the South Pacific). With stars like Enzio Pinza and Mary Martin, its success was assured. It opened in New York on April 7, 1949. The beautiful Some Enchanted Evening and the men’s rousing chorus There is Nothing Like A Dame are exhilarating.

In 1950 I'he King and I launched, opening on March 8,1951. It became the third Rodgers and Hammerstein show to run for more than 1,000 performances on Broadway. Flower Drum Song opened on December 1,1958 and ran for 600 performances.

The Sound of Music arrived in 1959, following on what, at the time, seemed to be insuperable difficulties.

T he story was based on the lives of the real von Trapp family, and permission for its use had to be obtained from the Baroness von Trapp and the other seven members, all of whom were living in different countries.

However, on November 16,1959,1'he Sound of Music opened in New York.

It is possibly still ‘sounding’ there!.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s partnership has been worthily described as being the greatest in the history of the musical.

These notes give an indication of the extent of the work of these talented composers, so we ask you to relax and again enjoy the “R & R” in 1986.

Pat Campbell is now completing his 40th year in the “ R & R” . H e combines the duty of the General Secretary o f the Society with that of performing leading roles, particularly the comedy parts in the Gilbert and Sullivan operas at the Gaiety Theatre.

This is his fourth visit to the National Concert Hall, having played the Judge in Trial

By Jury in 1983, Mr. W. S. Gilbert in the Society’s presentation of “An Evening with Mr. Gilbert and Mr. Sullivan” in 1984 and compere for last year’s presentation by the “ R & R” for the 1985 Special Olympics.

LOUISE STUDLEY Louise Studley is one o f the outstanding actresses in the music theatre.She played Eliza in the Irish premiere of My Fair Lady. Her interpretatio of The Merry Widow is legendary and she has played the role all over Ireland. She has appeared as leading lady in most of the Romberg, Novello, Rodgers and Hammerstein and Noel Coward musicals.

She has also toured North America in the 18th century musical Smock Alley, receiving rave notices from the American critics. She has made frequent appearances on radio and television.

Louise’s most recent appearance in the Concert Hall was in her one-woman show on Peg Woffington, written for he by Maureen Charlton, and premiered in the 1985 Dublin T heatre Festival.

BRENDAN McSHANE Brendan M cShane whose brilliant perfor­ mances in My Fair Lady (Professor Higgins); Fiddler on the Roof (Tevye): The King and I (tide role) will always be remembered, can recall up to thirty leading roles in the great musicals and Gilbert & Sullivan operas, in which he has appeared in Dublin and throughout the country.

T hese include Oklahoma, Carousel, The Merry Widow, The Student Prince, Bitter Sweet and Gigi, while one of his outstanding performances was as T h e Don in The Gondoliers.

TED RYAN T ed Ryan will need little introduction to R & R audiences, having sung most, if not all of the Gilbert & Sullivan tenor leads with the Society in the Gaiety Theatre. A former student of the Royal Irish Academy and the Municipal College of Music, where he studied under Michael O ’Higgins and Veronica Dunne respectively, his repertoire embraces both G rand Opera and Oratorio.

PHIUP BYRNE Philip Byrne started his singing career with the Dublin Grand Opera Society, before turning to musical comedy and cabaret, where he has been very succesful.

H e won the International Award for the best male voice at the Waterford Festival on three occasions.

Previously he played the male lead with the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society in Show Boat, The M eny Widow and Oklahoma.

H is last appearance at the National Concert Hall was in Carmina Bunrana with the Dublin County Choir.

A leading artist of the R & R, well-known for her outstanding protrayals of such Gilbert & Sullivan roles as Katisha, Lady Jane, and of character roles in musical shows, notably M amita in Gigi, Mrs. Pearce in My Fair Lady, and Golde in Fiddler on the Roof. She has also taken part in many plays and has won individual awards in drama festivals on several occasions.

In recent years she has taken on the additional role o f Chorus M aster of the R & R.

D O L O R E S DELAHUNTY Bom in London and trained as a ballet dancer in Dublin and Chester. First performed with the R & R while still at school. Invited by London producer Freddie Carpenter, to dance professionally in Scotland. On return to Dublin became an active member of the Society.

Appearing first as principal dancer and later playing leading roles as well as choreographing many of the shows. As assistant to the late Norm an Meadmore, she gained valuable know­ ledge of all of the Gilbert & Sullivan operas.

Choreographer for many other amateur musical societies including several seasons with the D .G .O .S. Choreographer of the winning team in the John Player Tops of the Town Competition for two successive years.

G EA R O ID G R A N T Gearoid G rant studied piano with the late Dr. J. J. O ’Reilly in the College of Music and graduated from U.C.D. with a B.Mus. in 1972.

Since then he has worked as Conductor, Musical Director and Arranger for many theatrical companies. He has been M .D. with the R & R since 1978 and has appeared as G uest Conductor with the R TE Concert Orchestra, O ur Lady’s Choral Society, N .I.C .O . and the Irish Youth Orchestra.

Bom of a show-business family in the USA, Anne Shumate has lived in Ireland for the past twelve years. She first made he name as a singer/actress in Limerick where she was a regular guest in all the major cabaret venues and theatres.

But it is in the field of review and musical comedy that Anne has become best known and has earned the tide “Queen of Musical Comedy”, taking the leading roles in musicals such as Sweet Charity, Hello Dolly, Paint Your Wagon, Pajama Game and Calamity Jane and starring in professional revues such as the Gaiety Theatre and Budin’s, Mosney.

In 1980, she was the recipient of the Best Female Performer Award in the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera for her portrayal of Nellie Forbush in South Pacific. In 19 8 1, she again captured that award for her role as Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls. 1982 brought her her “hat trick”, being selected Best j Comedienne of the Festival as Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun. The winning of these awards consecutively has not been achieved by any other performer.

N IG EL WILLIAMS His previous appearances with the R & R include Yeomen of the Guard, Trial By Jury and lotanthe.

H e is also prominent in operatic and oratorio circles. H e returns to the Dublin Grand Opera Society next April to sing the parts of the Doctor in La Traviata and Prince Yamadori in Madame Butterfly.

Nigel has given several solo recitals to considerable critical acclaim, and has broadcast on R TE radio many times and also on the “Late Late Show” .

H e teaches singing in the College of Music (where he continues his own studies with Veronica Dunne) and is a member of and frequent soloist with the R TE Chamber Choir.

LUCY LANE Lucy Lane is already a favourite singer with Concert Hall audiences, having appeared there several times.

She specialises in the Gilbert & Sullivan roles of the Duchess and the Queen o f the Fairies, in both o f which she is always successful.

NIAMH MURRAY N iam h Murray gave a beguiling performance as Phyllis in last November’s season of Gilbert & Sullivan operas in the Gaiety Theatre. She is a pupil of Paul Deegan and sang the soprano role in Messiah in the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

Niamh is the current holder of the Thomas M oore Cups at Sligo Feis Ceoil and Feis Shligigh.

She previously appeared with the R & R as Kate in The Yeomen of the Guard, also with Take Four Productions and in Blackrock College Gilbert & Sullivan operas.

She looks forward to appearing in The Barber o f Seville in the R .IA M .
