FRED TAYLOR An Appreciation By S. H. F red Taylor, taken so unexpectedly from our midst, was a person in whom the principles o f true Christianity were always apparent. Big of heart, Fred devoted a major share o f his leisure time to activities connected with the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society o f which he was honorary booking secretary for many years. H is contribution to that Society along with the various other organisations with which he was involved, was not alone confined to the duties attached to this particular office, but also in the general policy and everyday decision making processes o f the Society. U p to recently, he was a performing m em ber of the R & R taking part in the various stage presentations at the Gaiety T heatre and elsewhere. And it was particularly fitting that the m em bers o f that society should have sung their farewell to him at the funeral service in C hrist C hurch Taney. H is loss will be felt greatly by all who knew and loved him, particularly by his wife, Cynthia, and children, Robert and Valerie. But, let them take consolation from the fact that F re d was a truly Christian m an who died and was buried with all the dignity which accom panied him through his good life on this earth.

“As upon its Lordly way, this unique procession passes”
lolanthe was last produced by the Society in 1978, and has some beautiful music dispersed throughout its attractive score. In particular, the entry of the fairies to the strains of the heart-lifting melody of the orchestral accompaniment exudes a thrill of happy expectation that is fully realised as the story progresses to the majesty of the Peer’s chorus — a highlight of the first act. Further joys to be envisaged are the fun and excitement of the Lord Chancellor’s delightful songs and performance in the second act. T he first production of lolanthe took place on November 25,1882. It was also the first Gilbert and Sullivan opera to be staged in London’s Savoy Theatre. Now, over a century later, the drollery and quirky nonsense of the storyline brings as much fun and enjoyment to present-day audiences, as it did to the London patrons of more than a hundred years ago. T he love story of the Arcadian shepherd for the pretty shepherdess has held its place securely in the affections of its audiences in the years between. As a further tribute to its success, Sullivan was knighted some months after the opening night. G. Mac N.

The M ikado was one hundred years old last M arch. In all that time it has remained the most popular and w idely-produced o f the operas, appealing as it does to all ages, from the youngest schoolchild to the ‘oldsters’ who have savoured its lovely music all through their lives. T h e critics o f the time said: ‘M essrs Gilbert and Sullivan m ust be familiar with success by this time, but never in their brilliant partnership o f sprightly music and fantastic fun has a more unanim ous verdict o f approval been passed upon their labours, than when the curtain fell on Saturday l a s t . . . . ’ T h ese auspicious words bear repeating. How true they have proved to be. We hope our audiences will rejoice again in the T h ree Little M aids and the brilliantly effective trios and duets, leading to the finale o f the first act, when Katisha’s entrance is greeted with disdain, but with som e o f the m ost inspiring music in the whole work. T h e second act with Yum-Yum’s beautiful ‘T h e Moon and I’, the Madrigal and splendid chorus work is rewarding to the last note, and probably by now completely familiar to listeners who are themselves w ord-perfect in the songs. The M ikado was last produced by the R & R in 1983. G. M ac N.
