Programme Notes SEV EN TY Y E A R S young in December this year, the R. and R. is very happy to be back home in the Gaiety Theatre for this Autumn 1984 season of Gilbert and Sullivan operas.

T he Society has presented 230 stage shows in its lifetime, including twelve of the G. and S. operas which have been successfully produced on many occasions.

T he inaugural production — The Mikado — on Decembers 1913 was in the Q u e e n ’s T heatre, and on only one other occasion (Spring 1938) — a presentation of M ercenary Mary (Olympia Theatre) — all of its shows have been staged in the beloved Gaiety Theatre, its home for the ensuing years.

Temporarily deprived of this home in Spring this year, the Society brought a three-night presentation of A n Evening With Mr. Gilbert and Mr. Sullivan to the National Concert Hall.

This proved to be a great success.

While concentrating mainly on the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, the Society has staged memorable performances of world famous musicals, many of which — My Fair Lady, Bitter Sweet, The Merry Widow, Fiddler on the Roof, Oklahom a, A nnie Get Your Gun, and the glamourous Ivor Novello romances merited repeat performances.

T he company is proud to have been part of the programme on the recent night of celebration of the resurrection of this greatly-loved playhouse.

D ublin has enjoyed playhouses for over 300 years. The first theatre was built in 1635, but, unfortunately has left no history. In Restoration days. Smock Alley Theatre was o p e n e d in O range Street in 1743 — Crow Street Theatre followed. T hen came the first Theatre Royal, there were four in succession, two destroyed by fire, one demolished for a more gracious building and the fourth sadly demolished to accommodate an office block. From the second Theatre Royal the Gaiety tradition was founded by J oh n and Michael G unn, who on the 28th April 1871 secured a patent to establish “ a well-regulated theatre and th ere in at all times publicly to act, represent or perform any inte rlude, tragedy, comedy, prelude, opera, burletta, play, farce o r pantom im e” . T h e patent cleared the way for architect C. J. Phipps, to commence the design and building o f the Dublin G aiety at a cost o f £26,000, and was com pleted within 28 weeks, allowing for the arrival of teak from B urm a, oak from Russia and cast iron from Britain.

T h e G aiety has survived the renewal of its Patents at intervals o f 21 years and since 1965 the building has been protected by a Dublin Corporation Preservation Order which ensures that the Victorian yellow brick facade of D u b lin ’s oldest theatre will continue to maintain its place in South King Street. When the opening performance of She Stoo ps to C onquer was given by Mrs. John W ood’s C o m p a n y on November 27th 1871 the seatingcapacity was given at that time as 2,000. Down the years, successive renovations have reduced this capacity to 1,185 — more safety, more style and more comfort. These are the qualities which the 1984 re-development and renovation have highlighted. The G u n n brothers built their Gaiety for th e people o f their time, when a visit to the theatre was ‘an occasio n’ for evening dress in the Dress Circle. The 1984 G a iety includes a restaurant facility, supplementing the existing remodelled bars, an Exhibition Area and many o th e r m odern features, all of which will not only ensure the c om fo rt and en joyment of our patrons, but, also that the spirit o f the G aiety Theatre as a major centre of activity and city life is enhanced.

In keeping with the very broad outline o f its patent, the G a iety has been host to a very varied programme throu gh out the past 113 years. Unfortunately space prohibits us from reproducing even a brief history of the m any great productions and famous names which have graced the G aiety stage — however amends will be made within the next few months when “A Comprehensive H is tory o f the Gaiety Th e a tre ’ will be published and available in the Theatre. In 1896 when the Gaiety Theatre celeb rate d its Silver Jubilee with the comic opera Sham us O ’Brien, staged by the Shamus O ’Brien O pera Company th e Irish Tim es commenting at the time, wrote “The m o d e rn Dublin stage has been created . . . The Citizens o f D ublin are proud of the Gaiety and its illustrious record . . . ” Gaietystage Productions hope to maintain th ese im portant links with the public and in turn, give an assurance o f presenting a wide range o f the best in live entertain m en t.

THE GONDOLl T h e ageless story of the two personable gondoliers a n d their refreshingly youthful and pretty wives remains one of the ‘top te n ’ in p o p u larity in the G ilbert and Sullivan repertoire.

It was the eleventh in the series and was given its first perform ance on D e c e m b e r ? , 1889.

It is re p o rte d that ‘this first night was the most brilliant of all their first nights, an d th a t at the close, the company received an ovation that could be h e a rd outside, above the roar of the Strand” .

T h e o th e r im portant q u artet of players in the opera are the D u k e and D u c h e ss of Plaza T o ro , and their darling daughter, Casilda, on whom they have p in ned their hopes of financial survival. H owever, h e r secret love Luiz, is b u t a d ru m m e r boy, and sc beneath her p arents’ notice.

T w o of th e loveliest duets Sullivan has written are sung by these two, a n d th ere a re oth er delightful quartets, especially the elegant G avotte in th e second act, which also includes the well-known ^Take A Pair of S parkling E y e s ’ sung by Marco, tenor partner of the Gondoliers.

T h e production all those years ago was also responsible for an unusual a c k n o w le d g e m en t of each o th e r’s w ork, when at the end of the first p e r fo rm a n c e , G ilb ert thanked Sullivan and said ‘the opera gives one the c h a n c e o f shining right through the tw entieth century with ^ r e f le c te d light’.

I t is good to know that the light still shines.

TRIAL BY JURY L a st p re se n te d by the Society in 1980, is a delightful trifle. First p ro d u c e d in M a rch 1875 at the R oyal T h ea tre in L ondon, this production m a y b e said to have really m a rk e d the beginning of the great partnership.

T h e J u d g e ’s song is the high spot here, and the bevy of pretty b rid esm aid s, led by a sparkling bride, liven up the otherwise grim court.

Play ed with a high sense of com edy, this is a joyous piece, and the S e x te t an d ch orus n u m b e r “ A Nice D ilem m a ” is well worth hearing.

The Pirates of Penzance Last presented by the Society in 1977, is the rollicking tale of pirates and beautiful maidens meeting on a quiet Cornish shore — the girls being suitably terrified at first, but later changing their opinions.

The premiere was in New York on New Y ear’s Eve 1879, when it swept the city off its feet. Its official first night was in the Opera Comique in London on April 3, 1880.

There is some lovely singing by the girls in the early scenes, and M abel’s solo “ Poor Wandering O n e” is considered to be the most challenging of all the soprano solos in the Gilbert and Sullivan group.

R uth, maid-of-all-work to the pirates, tells them that Frederick, their leader is now 21, and is free to leave piracy forever, but they want him to stay. Ruth is worried because of having in his early days, apprenticed him to a pirate instead of a pilot.

The father o f all the girls — the colourful Major General — saves his daughters from the apparently scheming men by telling them that he is an orphan, and therefore claims special treatment. The Major G eneral’s song “ I Am The Very Model of a Model Major General” is another in the distinguished library of G ilbert’s patter songs — greatly to be enjoyed.

A n outstanding chorus number, attaining to higher things, is Hail Poetry. The future looks bright and Mabel and Frederick are free to marry.

A c t II is almost completely dominated by the policemen and their various songs and hilarious activities. There is a furious battle between them and the pirates, until Ruth comes along with another solution and all ends well.
