ANNIE GET YOUR GUN Behind the glamour of the fine stage setting, and the strains of the bewitching music of Irving Berlin, lies the story of a real-life happy romance and marriage that lasted for fifty years.

Annie Oakley did actually exist.

She was of Quaker parents, Jacob and Susan Moses in Darke County, Ohio on August 13, 1860, into a wretchedly poor family. Her father died when she was six, and it devolved on her at an early age to use her gun-toting talents to provide food for her mother, brother and three sisters, and generally to supplement the family income.

Later, on a visit to Cincinnati, where one of her sisters, now married, lived, she was invited to take part in a shooting contest with Irishman, Frank Butler, appearing in a vaudeville show at the local theatre.

He expected a walkover victory, but she beat him by one point. She also won his love, and after a year’s courtship, they were married. The year was 1875, and the place O&kley, from which she subsequently took her stage name.

When Frank’s partner became ill, Annie joined him in what was to become a fantastic theatrical career, which took her to most countries of the world, under the auspices of Colonel Bill Cody (Buffalo Bill) and his Wild West Show. Chief Sitting Bull adopted Annie as his daughter in a ceremony of great splendour that will be seen on stage.

After fifty happy years Annie died in November 1926. Frank survived her by a few weeks.

It is good once again to share in celebration of her years. The show was last produced by the R & R in Spring 1956.

Our audiences will enjoy the well-known beautiful songs — The Girl That I Marry; They Say It’s Wonderful; I Got the Sun in the Morning; My Defences Are Down and the famous comedy numbers — You Can’t Get A Man With A Gun; Doin’ What Comes Naturally and Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better, and the top show-stopper which has become almost an anthem in theatres all over the world since it was first written There’s No Business Like Show Business!

Annie Get Your Gun was the greatest box office triumph of Irving Berlin’s Broadway career, and the only one of his musicals to achieve a run of more than 1,000 performances, after its opening night on Broadway, on May 16,1946.
