My Fair Lady W h e n G e o rg e B ern ard Shaw w rote Pygmalion away back in 1912, he p ro b a b ly did not foresee, astute gentlem an though he was, that his ro m a n tic story would som e day be magically transformed into a stage and film p re sen tatio n which in its musical form, would create an all-time high ratin g in au dience appeal, and run for six and a half years on Broadway, a f te r its initial opening in M arch 1956.

It a p p e a rs that it was fifteen years before he started on Pygmalion, that Shaw got th e first germ o f an idea for the play. H e wrote to Ellen Terry: 'C a e s a r a n d C leopatra has been driven clean out of my head by a play I w a n t to write for them (Forbes-R obertson and Mrs. Pat Campbell) in which he shall be a W est-end gentlem an and she an east-end dona in an a p r o n a n d three orange and red feathers.’

T h e first production was in Vienna — in G e rm a n — in 1913.

T h e app ealing story of the pretty flower girl with the outrageous accent w as first p resented to the N ew Y ork stage in M arch 1956, u nder its new title M y Fair L ady. W ith its light-hearted, immensely clever lyrics and w o n d erfu l musical score by Alan J a y L e rn er and Frederick Loewe, it b e c a m e a star show overnight, and achieved 2,717 perform ances before it closed in S e p te m b e r 1962.

M y Fair L a d y opened a t the T h e a tre Royal, D rury Lane on April 30, 1958, a n d closed on O c to b e r 19 a tte r 2,281 performances, having been seen and ap p lau d e d by 4,325,000 people. A t present the show is still playing to packed houses in London.

T h e W a r n e r B rothers film has long since become a classic.

T h e genius o f L e rner a n d Loew e is always evident in the twenty-odd songs which have becom e so familiar in the past twenty-five years, and th e eighteen scenes o f the com bined two acts give magnificent scope for th e tran sfo rm ation from Covent G a rd e n vegetable m arket to the co m fo rta b le b achelor q u arters of Professor Higgins, the exciting Ascot scene and the Em bassy Ball.

T w elve years ago the R athm ines and R athgar Musical Society p re s e n te d the Irish p rem iere in their Gaiety Spring Season. So great was th e d e m a n d for a further production, that it was decided to re peat the show in the A u tu m n o f th at year (1969) when it again proved an instant success with the D ublin audiences.

G .B .S . in his epilogue to the play holds that the history of Eliza D o o little , though called a rom ance because the transfiguration it records se e m s exceedingly im probable, is com m on enough. H ow ever, his a u d ie n c e s m ay take leave to differ with him, and find themselves firmly h e ld by the unusual story o f the flower girl w ho turns into a lady and the P ro fe sso r w h o becom es ‘a n ordinary m a n ’.
