The King and I T h e story o f this spectacular show is based on the novel A n n a and the K ing o f Siam by M arg aret Landen. It o pen ed a t Sr. James's T h eatre, N e w Y ork on M arch 29, 1951, and becam e th e third R odgers and H a m m e rs te in musical to run for m ore than 1,000 performances.

E a rlie r (Jan uary 1951) when the partners w e re still looking for a leading m an, five im po rtant actors considered for the part being unavailable, ‘a bald-headed young m an who sat cross-legged on the stage a n d sang a strange Russian G ypsy song, accompanying himself on the gu ita r’ caught th e fancy o f the pair. T hey said simultaneously T h a t ’s our k in g ’ and Y u l B ry n n e r was signed almost on the spot. L ater it was the fourth consecutive R odgers and H am m erstein musical to play in Drury L a n e . By th e tim e it had c om pleted its run early in 1956, it had enabled the autho rs to k eep their lease on the th eatre for a total of a lmost nine years. From its revival at the L o ndo n Palladium in June last year, with Y u l B ryn ner a n d Virginia M cK enna in the m ain roles, this colourful exciting show has had packed houses and looks set for a long run, following its successful revival on Broadway. The King and I is divided into two acts, the action passing in a n d around the king’s palace in B a n g k o k , Siam.

T h e story is a b o u t the changing attitude of an all-powerful dem anding O rie n ta l king, as a result o f the influence of an English school-teacher, in the person o f th e pretty widow — Mrs. A nna.

T h e original A n n a was a real person who h a d lived during the mid1800s, and it w as from h e r diaries that M arg aret Lan don had written the bo ok . It was th e first play that R odgers and H am m erstein had written in which none o f th e characters was an A m erican.

A qu arrel betw een th e king an d A n n a over w he the r she is to have her own h o m e , o r continue to live in the palace, is averted by L ady Thiang, th e king’s n u m b e r one wife, w ho tells of his d ream s and plans in the beautiful song Som ething W onderful.

O th e r intriguing nu m b e rs include H ello Y o u n g Lovers; I W histle a H a p p y Tune; W e K iss in a Shadow ; I H ave D ream ed; Getting to K now Y o u ; a n d others.

T h e show looks like being a n o th e r winner for the R and R. The o p e n in g night is in aid o f the funds o f the Friends o f the R otunda.
