Trial by Jury R ichard D 'O y ly C arte, who was already acquainted with A rth u r Sullivan, was apparently spotting winners in 1875 when he m et Gilbert a n d ‘p erceived that a com bination o f his work a n d Sullivan’s music would p robably m a k e a fortune for anyone with gum ption enough to back th e m ’.

H e asked the pair to write a one-act piece with music to fill the bill at the R oyalty T h e a tre where O ffenbach's La Perichole was shortly to be p ro d u c e d . T h e libretto exactly suited Sullivan’s taste, a n d within a fortnight he had set it to music. Trial b y Jury was launched on M arch 25, 1875, and m a d e such a sensation that, though played as an after-piece, it quickly b ec a m e the main attraction. Sullivan's brother, Frederick, was so g o od in the role o f the judge, th at G ilbert attributed the success of the piece ‘in n o slight d e g re e ’ to him.

Trial b y J u ry turned o u t to be the very first o f the joyous light operas th a t have so conclusively captured the audiences of the world since then.

It ran solidly for a year, and was later revived many times.

H .M .S. Pinafore H .M .S . Pinafore had its first perform ance on May 25, 1878. This time G ilb e rt satirised the Adm iralty and the Royal Navy, having his attention d eflected from the Law C ourts in Trial. T h e re w ere storms as the newly a p p o in te d First L ord of the A dm iralty, W. H . Smith, was th ou g ht to be ca ric a tu re d in Pinafore’s Sir Jo se p h P o rte r, K .C .B . H o w ever, the p r u d e n t G ilb e rt got o u t o f that im passe by innocently explaining th at the First L o rd in the op e ra was a violent radical while the well-known W. H. S m ith was a pro n ou nced conservative. It is n ot revealed how many believ ed him!

T h e story is a b o u t Josephine, the C a p ta in ’s daughter, a n d h er love, heavily disguised, for a ‘low-born sailor’ on the ship. T h e sailor loves her to o, b ut is tu rn e d dow n o n the score o f unsuitability. M isunderstandings m o u n t, b u t a fte r som e skulduggery by Dick D ead ey e, the ‘b a d ’ m an of th e crew , a n d B u ttercup, ‘a plum p a n d pleasing p erson ’ with Jo se p h in e ’s h ap piness a t h e a rt, all ends well.

The Gondoliers The Gondoliers was the eleventh o f the G ilbert and Sullivan operas, a n d was given its first p erform ance on D ecem ber 7, 1889.

It is r e p o r te d that 'this first night was the most brilliant of all their first nights, and t h a t at the close the com pany received an ovation that could be h e ard o u tsid e , above the roar of the Strand'.

It tells the love story o f two gondoliers and their pretty wives, and o f the e n ta n g le m e n t with the D uke and Duchess o f Plaza Toro and their “beautiful d a u g h te r, Casilda' whose affections, however, are already e ng a g e d by h e r father’s d ru m m e r boy, Luiz. T w o duets between these tw o a re a m o n g the most tuneful that Sullivan has written. T h e famous ‘T a k e a Pair o f Sparkling Eyes', sung by Marco is a highlight of the second act.

Several delightful quartets a re also in the score, notably the elegant G a v o tte in the second act, and some o f the gayest and most exuberant music o f all th e operas. T he production was also responsible for an u nu su a l a ck no w ledg em ent of each o th er's work, when a t the end of the first p e rfo rm a n c e , G ilb ert th a n k e d Sullivan and said 'the opera gives one th e chance o f shining right through the twentieth century with a reflected light’.

O n e m ust a g re e that he spoke the truth.
