Patience Like m any of the G ilbert and Sullivan operas Patience had a stormy beginning. A fte r a n o th e r o f the innum erable quarrels between the p a r tn e r s a fellow-composer, Fred Clay, who had introduced the two some elev en years earlier, persuaded Sullivan to ask G ilbert to write a verseversion of The M artyr o f A ntioch for the Leeds Festival for which he had written the score. T h e oratorio had a great success and Gilbert, mollified, w as soon at work on a successor to The Pirates o f Penzance.

T h e aesthetic craze was at its height in London. O scar Wilde was to be seen regularly in tow n in unusual garb, and, says H esketh Pearson in his biography, ‘the Philistines led by G eorge D u M aurier in Punch, were indulging in the pastime of pelting poets. G ilbert, who had a good eye to business, saw which way the wind was blowing, and determ ined to a d d a few puffs of his o w n . ’ Sullivan, following the success o f his oratorio, disappeared to the R iviera on a two-m onth holiday, with a part only of Patience in his bag.

H e r e he tem porarily abandoned composing and interested himself instead in a schem e to float a tramway company. H e was back in London, how ever, in time to help G ilbert a n d C a rte win a lawsuit against the C o m e d y O p e r a C o m pany to prevent the latter from performing their works.

O n ly then did he settle down to complete the score o f Parience. H e had to w ork overtim e to get it finished by the day of production, and only s ta r te d to score the work ten days before the first night. H e began to sketch o u t the o v erture forty-eight hours before the curtain went up.

Patience was first produced at the O p e ra C om ique on April 23,1881. It h a d an im m ediate success. T h e audiences soon overcrowded the Wych S tr e e t T h e a tre to such an extent, that it was found necessary to transfer to th e Savoy T h e a tre (to be the p erm anent hom e of the Gilbert and Sullivan o p e ra s ) six m o n th s later. This theatre was the first in London to be lighted by electricity a n d to have the A m erican queue system installed for u n re se rv e d seats.

T h e last presentation of Patience by T h e R athm ines and R athgar M usical Society was in 1972.

The Mikado A ccording to ecstatic reviews in L o n d o n papers following th e first p ro du ction of T he M ikado in the Savoy T h eatre on M arch 14,1885, there w e re three e ncores for Three Little M aids and seven (which could have b e e n twelve!) for The Flowers That B loom In The Spring.

T h e y continue â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Messrs. G ilbert and Sullivan m ust be familiar with success by this tim e, but never in their brilliant partnership of sprightly m usic and fantastic fun has a m ore unanim ous verdict of approval been p assed upon th e ir labours than when the curtain fell on Saturday l a s t . . .

T h e p atnership was never stronger.

W h a t they could not know was th at in T h e M ikado, they had written a musical piece th a t was to be accounted the most valuable stage property in the world for the next seventy years.

Fine w ords a n d how true they have proved to be. Now, m ore than nin ety years have passed since that long ago evening, and the opera (its 27th presen tatio n by the R & R ), still holds its place in the hearts and m inds o f actors and audiences all over the world, for the pow er o f its d ra m a tic music, lovely songs and brilliant sense of fun.
