GIGI AN IRISH PREMIERE P ar is in t h e S p r i n g — blossom ing trees and flow er-filled parks — where young lovers — and an older love affair — form the backg ro und fo r the delightful story of GIG), w ritten by Colette, the fam ous French w rite r who sadly, saw n eithe r the play, the H ollyw ood film , no r the musical, all of w hich, based on her book, w ere later produced.

The scene is set in the Bois de Boulogne, in the first year of this century. Gaiety, youth and laughter w ith some m ischiev ous intrigue, are the them e of th is beautiful twoact m usical, enhanced thro ugh ou t by Lerner and Loew e’s u nforgetta ble music. The show inevitably brings to mind M aurice C hevalie r’s perform ance in the role o f Honore Lachailles, when he played tw enty years ago with Leslie Caron and Louis Jourdan. His picture in this part (co u rte sy M G M ) is on the co ve r of his autobiog ra ph ical w riting s, BRAVO, MAURICE, pub lished a few years ago. Honore meets again his old love M am ita and one of the h ig hligh ts of the show is th e ir singing of the hauntingly lovely ‘Ah, yes, I rem em ber it w e ll’. The young Gigi, still a c h ild in G aston’s exper ienced eyes, soon captures his heart, and in rapturous scenes, w here incide ntally som e very glam ourous costum es are w orn, the love stories of fo u r eleg ant people reach a satisfactory con clusion! O ther fa m ilia r songs are the them e song T h a n k Heaven fo r Little G irls ’; ‘The N ight They Invented C ham pagne’; ‘G ig i’; and the p oignant ‘I’m G lad I’ m Not Young Any M ore ’ . GIGI began as a novel. It was first film e d as a straight su bje ct in the 1940’s in France w ith Dan ielle D elorm e in the lead. In 1951 A n ita Loos, the A m erican novelist, made a dram atisation fo r the stage, and this w as pro duced in London in 1956 w ith Leslie C aron, Ena B urrell and Tony B ritton, d irected by Peter Hall, then the husband o f Miss Caron.

The story became a Hollywood musical two years later, with Miss Caron again in the title role, Maurice Chevalier and Louis Jourdan as the other principals. This was directed by Vincente Minelli, father of Liza Minelli. Lerner and Loewe also wrote Brigadoon (1947 Broadway); My Fair Lady (1956); and Camelot (1960). Loewe was born in Vienna in 1901, the year G igi’s musical story begins. GIG) first appeared as a stage musical in New York in November 1973. Alfred Drake, Daniel Massey and Karin Wolfe were in the show, which received several Tony Awards later that season. It should be warmly received by our faithful Dublin audiences! G. Mac N.
