J a ck Point and th e maid, Elsie, two s tro llin g players, bereft by the illness of E ls ie 's m other, of her com pany. They arrive on T o w e r Green to sing and dance, so tnat money can be earned fo r the invalid. W ilfre d S hadbolt, head ja ile r of the Tower, plagues Phoebe, Se rg e an t M eryll's d aughter, to m arry him, but her th o u g h ts are w ith C o lonel Fairfax, one of the p ris o n e rs in th e T ow er, w h o is to d ie as th e play opens. He, however, has tw ic e saved S e rgeant M e rry l's life, and w hen an o p p o rtu n ity arises of saving him, the S ergeant plots w ith Phoebe to ste a l the jail keys from S hadbolt, re­ lease Fairfax, p re te n d in g h e is his ow n son, hom e fro m the wars. P rio r to this, Fairfax has learned that he w ill be kept out of his estates by a sch e m in g kinsm an, if he d ie s un­ m arried. He offe rs o ne hun dre d c ro w n s to any g irl w h o w ill m arry him (she w ill be w ife for only one h o u r). Elsie agrees, u nder stron g p ro te st fro m J a c k Point, p ro v id e d she is free after o ne hour. T he ce re m o n y then takes place. M uch later, a pardon fo r Fairfax arrives, w h ic h means that Elsie is le g a lly bound to him, a nd must le ave J a c k Point.

THE YEOMAN OF THE GUARD w as the first p ro d u ctio n of the R and R in the G a ie ty T heatre on D e ce m b e r 7, 1914 and w as destined to be the first of m ore than 200 of the C om pany's show s there. It is one of the m ost fa m o u s of the G ilb e rt and Sullivan operas, a nd was c o n s id e re d by the p a rtn e rs to be th e best they had w ritten together. G ilb e rt saw in the c h a ra c te r of J a ck P oint a p o rtra it o f him self, and was at his h a p p ie s t in his p a rtn e rs h ip w ith Sullivan when w ritin g it. Su lliva n ap p are n tly had som e d iffic u lty in w ritin g the fa m o u s “ I have a so n g to Sing O " and e ventu ­ ally appealed to G ilb e rt, w h o helped out w ith p a rt o f an old sea shanty he had heard sung by sa ilo rs on b o a rd his yacht. A fte r hearing the first dozen bars o r so, Su lliva n ex­ claim ed: ‘ I've g o t it' and assured his p a rtn e r th a t ‘fo r once' he w as re sp o n sib le fo r the m usic as w e ll as the w o rds! It was th e ir tenth w ork. It w as last p resented by th e R and R in 1974.

IOLANTHE. T he love s to ry of the A rca d ia n s h e p he rd fo r the pretty w ard in C h a n c e ry was th e first of the G ilb e rt and Sullivan o p e ra s to be staged at L o n d o n 's Savoy Theatre.

The firs t p ro d u c tio n w a s on Novem ber 25, 1882, ninety-six o d d years ago. It ran fo r well over a year, in s p ite of its g ibes at peers and m em b e rs of Parliam ent, w h ic h w e re soon the ta lk of every club. G ilb e rt's su cce ss p re clu d e d any o p p o ­ sition, however, and its g re a t triu m p h b ro u g h t b a lm to th e partners, e sp e cia lly to Sullivan, w hose m oth e r's re c e n t death had p lu n g e d him into th e depths o f d e p re s sio n — a d isa ste r fo llo w d by the loss o f h is w h o le life ’s savings, a b o u t w h ic h he was in fo rm e d ju s t before he left his hom e on th e n ig h t o f the o p e n in g p e rfo rm a n ce .
