PROGRAMME NOTE

Rodgers and Hammerstein became involved in South Pacific in a roundabout way. The first person to see dramatic poss ibilities in James Michener's book (Tales of the South Pacific) was Kenneth McKenna, then head of the story department of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Naturally, he first thought of the work for the screen. After much discussion he, with playwright-director Joshua Logan, began to realise that it would be ideal for a musical. A chance meeting w ith Rodgers and Hammerstein Jed to their agreement to create it for the stage, but it was four months before a note of music or a word of dialogue was written. As we see it now the show is really made up of two of the Tales of the South Pacific; they were ‘Our Heroine’ (the love story of Nellie Forbush and Emile de Becque) and the other T o ’ Dollah’ (the unhappy love .affair between Joe Cable, a naval lieutenant and Liat, a native g irl). South Pacific opened in New York on April 7th, 1949, and with it Rodgers and Hammerstein achieved one of their great est successes.
