FIDDLER ON THE ROOF The story of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is adapted from the stories of SHOLOM ALEICHEM by Joseph Stein, who gained one of the ten awards achieved by the show. He s a y s : ‘Just as M arc Chagall expressed the lives, the dreams, the aspirations of his people in his art, Sholom Aleichem put them into his stories. He was the folk-singer of the ‘sh te tl’ those small ram shackle poverty-stricken Jewish villages in Czarist Russia. His little tales caught the hunger, the humour, the irony of a people m aintaining an absurd pride under desperate circum stances. Like so many children of im m igrants to A m erica and western Europe, I was raised on the tales o f Sholom Aleichem , and when Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick, myself and ou r d ire c to r Jerom e Robbins decided to attem pt a contem porary m usical play based on his TEVYE stories we knew we w ould need to move far from them in content but we resolved, as well as we were able, to remain true to the feeling and the s p irit of the original. Since its first perform ance in New Y ork in 1964 T h e F id d le r’ has travelled round the w orld, having been presented in Finland, Israel, Holland, Den mark, Australia, Japan, C zechoslovakia, Sweden, Germany, Norway, Austria, M exico and France. The London prem iere was on February 16 1967. Tevye is the m ilkm an of Anatevka. He has a loving but sharp-tongued wife, five lovely but unm arried daughters, a faithful but lame horse, a friend ly but oppressed village. He has no money but he is on speaking term s with God. Anatevka in the Ukraine, just south of anywhere, is unremarkable, only a m eandering jum ble of dis mal houses hedged by corn and w heat fields, sprinkled w ith a m arket place, a butcher shop a smithy, a synagogue, a Hebrew school, a tanner, a ta ilo r and a tavern. There is also a fidd ler on the roof. He is there, just like the village and just like Tevye, trying to scratch out a pleasant sim ple tune w ith out breaking his neck. It’s the tradition, and the people of Anatevka sing o f it.
