PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I always tell people we have the word “community” in our name for a reason. As our senior leadership team, faculty, and staff work diligently on a daily basis to fulfill our mission of creating opportunities and changing lives, how we impact and serve the community is always at the forefront. Integrally related to this is our impact on workforce development.

RCC has, of course, always been focused on workforce development, but we have recently renewed and sharpened that focus. RCC introduced Elbert J. Lassiter as our new vice president for workforce development and continuing education in May. Elbert is responsible for the creation and implementation of innovative workforce, continuing education, and professional development programs that will meet the current and future needs of Randolph County’s business, corporate, and healthcare communities.

Despite our best efforts in corporate and continuing education, a job-skills gap remains for many of our citizens and industries, and we needed to better align our educational and training resources to close that gap. This area was important enough to the College’s ongoing success and Randolph County’s economic and workforce development that it was time to add a position at the vice president level specifically to address this issue. Having Elbert on our team after his long career working in Randolph County industry has already begun to have a big impact. The quality of our workforce has a huge impact on Randolph County’s ability to attract new businesses and industries and to maintain and grow the businesses and industries we already have. RCC is fortunate to be working with a vast array of partners across Randolph County to help make that happen.

How does this renewed effort with workforce development impact you or someone you know? If you think about it, workforce development really impacts everyone. Are you a junior or senior in high school, contemplating your next step?

A business owner who needs specific training for employees due to changing technology? An employee in need of a certification to advance in your career? A wannabe successful small business owner? Ivy Lindsey Honored for Academic Excellence Ivy Marie Lindsey of Seagrove was honored as RCC’s 2014 Academic Excellence Award winner at an RCC ceremony in April.

Dr. Stuart Fountain, a member of the State Board of Community Colleges, was on hand to give Lindsey a plaque and medallion signifying her accomplishment.

She graduated with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Networking Technology in May. Lindsey is one of 58 students from each community college in North Carolina who were recognized in April for academic excellence. AEA selection requirements are consistent with Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society criteria. Students must be currently

enrolled, must have completed at least 12 semester hours in an associate degree program, and must have a cumulative grade point average of no less than 3.25.

Lindsey maintained a 4.0 GPA her entire college career, while remaining an active mother and a part-time employee for a local department store. Dr. Fountain noted that Lindsey had overcome several obstacles in the pursuit of her education, including becoming essentially homeless four years ago when she and her family were stranded in Randolph County after a car accident in 2009.

Getting into Character Dr. Nancy McCurry, who joined RCC in 1999 as an Early Childhood Education instructor, was RCC’s Excellence in Teaching winner for 2014. McCurry also served as program head for Early Childhood from 20022010. McCurry earned a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, a Master of Education in Human Development & Family Studies with a concentration in Interdisciplinary Studies in Preschool Education and Development, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum & Teaching, all from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

“Nancy McCurry is very creative in her teaching style,” reads one student’s recommendation letter for the award. “She does her absolute best to bring out every student’s potential in the best supportive way possible. She’s energetic and she is the kind of teacher that makes students want to come to class.” Another student evaluation says: “Dr. Nancy not only teaches, she brings energy and daily life to the room. She just gives 100% each and every day.”

In her free time, McCurry plays in a bluegrass band, called the Alley Rabbits. She is a songwriter and a record producer and writes under the name Miss Nancy. She lives in Greensboro.

Passionate about RCC Lorie L. McCroskey, who currently serves as RCC’s director of development, was named the 2014 Staff Person of the Year. She joined RCC as director of recruiting and student activities in October 2010 and served in that capacity until last April when she joined the Institutional Advancement team.

A community college alumna, McCroskey earned an associate degree in Photographic Technology from Randolph Community College, a certificate in Radio or Television Broadcasting from Central Carolina Community College, and a bachelor’s degree in political science from High Point University. She worked as an editor and executive producer for WGHP-Fox 8 for over 10 years and was the owner/ operator of Music with Ms. Lorie Preschool Music Program for over seven years.

One of McCroskey’s recruiting accomplishments, according to her nomination packet, was developing Personalized Admissions Counseling (PAC) sessions at RCC to increase the conversion of applicants to registered students. “Lorie became the applicants’ advocate until they met all their admissions requirements and were admitted to the College,” reads the nomination. “The PAC sessions paid off. After the first year, (RCC) saw an overall increase of 3 percent of Randolph County High School students ready to register on July 1. Some individual schools had as much as a 50 percent increase in the number of students registering for fall classes with RCC.” (Photo by Joshua Komer)

Honoring a Generous Philanthropist Randolph Community College Board of Trustees Chairman Mac Sherrill (right) and President Robert S. Shackleford Jr. (left) presented an honorary Humanities degree to community leader Ann Hoover during the College’s 2014 graduation ceremony held May 14 at Providence Grove High School gymnasium.

“Ann Hoover has been a vital part of the new levels reached in recent years by the Randolph Community College Foundation,” said Shackleford during the presentation. “She is a tireless advocate for the College throughout the community and regularly attends College and Foundation events in her role as a Foundation board member.”

Shackleford noted that for the past five years, Hoover has served as cochair for the planning committee for the Foundation’s Dancing with the Randolph Stars event, which has brought in more than $500,000 for student scholarships. “She has personally worked to secure a multitude of sponsorships, and the level to which she has reached out into the community to promote this event is unmatched,” he said.

In a post on her Facebook page after the award, Hoover wrote, “Thank you RCC, Dr. Shackleford, and Trustees. What an awesome honor! I am complimented to the moon and back!”

Hoover has served as president of the RCC Foundation since July 2013, and was vice president from 2011-2013. She has been a member of the RCC Foundation Board of Directors since 2008.

Wanda Brown

Distinguished Service Award

Wanda C. Brown, who retired from Randolph Community College as executive assistant to the president and Board of Trustees on April 1, 2013, was the recipient of the RCC Board of Trustees 2013 Distinguished Service Award.

Brown joined RCC in September 1982 as the part-time secretary to the director of the Associate Degree Nursing program. In 1987, Brown became the administrative assistant to the executive vice president for administrative services. She served in that role for one year and then became the executive assistant to the president in 1988.

“Her dedication to RCC, the students, and the community was evident each day by consistently performing her job duties through thoroughness, dedication, and most of all, integrity,” said Trustee Chair Mac Sherrill, in presenting the award. “She daily represented RCC and the president’s office in a professional manner, and she quickly earned respect from all areas of the College, the Board of Trustees, local partners, elected officials, and the community at-large.”

North Carolina Internship Council Dr. James “JW” Kelley, vice president for student services at Randolph Community College, has been appointed to a two-year term on the North Carolina Internship Council by N.C. Gov. Pat McCrory.

The North Carolina Internship Council serves as the governing body of the State Government Internship Program. The Council determines the appropriateness of proposals for student intern projects, determines the number of interns to be placed per project, screens applications, and selects interns.

The Council is made up of 17 members, 14 appointed by the Governor, one by the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, one by the Speaker of House, and one by the Secretary of Administration.

Kelley joined RCC in January 2011. He earned a B.A. from Johnson Bible College in Knoxville, Tenn., an M.A. in Counseling from Cincinnati Bible University in Ohio, and an Ed.D. in Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.

Elbert Lassiter

Vice President of Workforce Development and Continuing Education Elbert J. Lassiter was named as vice president for RCC’s new Workforce Development and Continuing Education Division. The new vice president will be responsible for the development and implementation of innovative workforce development, continuing education, and personal professional development programs that will meet the current and future needs of Randolph County’s economic development and corporate communities in fulfillment of the College mission, strategic priorities and goals.

RCC President Robert S. Shackleford Jr. said the College community is very excited about Lassiter joining the RCC family. “His commitment to the community college system, his passion for workforce development, and his servant leadership style make him a perfect fit for RCC,” said Shackleford.

Lassiter previously served a four-year term on the RCC Board of Trustees. He was appointed to the Board by then N.C. Gov. Beverly Perdue and served from 2009-2013. Most recently an operations manager for MOM Brands, Lassiter had been plant manager for Goodyear and Hyosung USA’s Asheboro Wire Plant for many years.

Lassiter was raised in Randolph County and earned a bachelor of science in business and management from Shaw University and has completed leadership development training at the Center for Creative Leadership, as well as Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma training.

UNCG Pacesetter Award Charles A. “Chuck” Egerton Jr., department head for Randolph Community College’s Photographic Technology Department, received the 2014 HHS Pacesetter Award from the University of North Carolina School of Health and Human Sciences.

The HHS Pacesetter Award honors outstanding alumni of the school who have attained local, state or regional recognition through their achievements in scholarship, leadership or service, during their career, or through civic involvement.

“Charles Egerton is the quintessential graduate student, he has made a significant impact as an accomplished peace-builder, educator, and photographer,” said Dr. Cathryne Schmitz, chair of the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies at UNCG. Egerton earned his Master of Arts in Peace and Conflict Studies in the Peace and Conflict Studies Department of the School of Health and Human Services in May 2013 after four years of synchronous online classes, one per semester.

Egerton joined the photography faculty at RCC in fall 1990. He is a graduate of RCC with an Associate in Applied Science in Commercial Photography and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting from Maryland Institute College of Art. randolph.edu | 10

RCC Building, Architect Receive State Recognition Randolph Community College’s $7.6 million Continuing Education and Industrial Center was listed on the State Construction Office’s list of Top 10 Best Managed and Administered Construction Projects for the year, and Robert Carmac of Smith Sinnett Architecture, the architect for the CEIC, was awarded the State Building Commission Certificate of Merit Award at the 33rd annual State Construction Conference in Raleigh on March 27.

Randolph Community College had the only community college project on the Top 10 List, which included much larger projects such as Winston-Salem State University’s Student Activities Center, East Carolina University’s Smith Williams Center, University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s Rec Center, and UNC’s IRB Marsico Hall.

“During the course of this project, Mr. Carmac worked tirelessly to help us

achieve our dream facility,” reads part of the nomination letter. “The CEIC is the single largest facility that Randolph Community College has ever endeavored and has become the only LEED Gold Certified facility in Randolph County.”

Garris and Goodwin also noted that the plan design took many years to develop and encountered several obstacles including budget, which Carmac helped the College to overcome by developing a full cost analysis spreadsheet on the project. In the end, they said Carmac “presented a plan which maximized the existing building footprint but allowed for vast commons areas, large well-lit classrooms, multifunction space, recessed space for recycling containers, and ample supplies storage.”

Local employers today are challenged by a “skills gap” in the workforce plus an “interest gap.”

The “skills gap” refers to applicants not having the necessary skills to perform the vacant jobs so they go unfilled or are taken by individuals from out of the area. The “interest gap,” however, applies to younger generations’ lack of interest in today’s manufacturing jobs.

The need to close both gaps was expressed by industry representatives and others at Aug. 28’s Align4NCWorks Learning Summit sponsored by the N.C. Community College System at Randolph Community College.

The summit involved 65 individuals representing business and industry, public schools, workforce development boards, government and economic development. It was the 15th of 22 regional meetings being held throughout the state to identify workplace innovations and challenges. The statewide initiative involves the community colleges along with industry, the N.C. Department of Public Instruction and the N.C. Department of Commerce.

The session focused on RCC and Davidson County Community College, which also serves Davie County. RCC President Dr. Bob Shackleford and DCCC President Dr. Mary Rittling both participated.

“This is one of my favorite community college buildings in the state,” said Dr. Scott Ralls, president of NCCCS, about the site of the summit, the RCC Continuing Education and Industrial Center in Asheboro.

Shackleford, in his welcome, explained that the building was a vacant furniture warehouse—“a shell of a building turned into an educational masterpiece”—which opened in January 2013.

“This was Plant 8,” said Doug Kemp, Klaussner Home Furnishings’ vice president of continuous improvement. “We built 1,200 pieces (of furniture) a day in this building,” he added about his company’s former use of the facility before Klaussner lost several large clients, which went out of business, and found its present upholstery furniture manufacturing niche.

He was one of two local industry leaders who talked about how RCC has assisted them in addressing workforce training.

The other was Fred Richey, vice president of corporate development and human resources for Technimark, who presented a detailed PowerPoint about his company’s growth from its Asheboro headquarters to the global market. “It’s critical to grow globally so we can grow in Randolph continued on page 15 13|randolph.edu

County,” he said about the company, which makes injection molding plastic products for Fortune 500 and Fortune 100 companies.

All agreed that a skilled workforce is needed to help in their growth and that their respective community colleges are working closely with them to provide the customized training they need.

Part of Thursday’s session focused on a discussion among industry leaders about the challenges and barriers in current workforce development and then concluding comments.

The need to close both the skills and interest gaps came out during this portion of the summit.

Dr. Stuart Fountain of Asheboro, member of the State Board of Community Colleges who’s chairing strategic planning for the board and the NCCCS, said, “The jobs are here and the people don’t have the skills. These young people coming through public schools are not aware of the opportunities.

“Working in industry is not what it was 30 years ago. It’s clean.

It’s good work. It’s good paying work.” He agreed with others that this message has not reached students. “We’ve got to be closing the skills gap and interest gap.”

Shackleford called the discussion “very eye opening” and noted that RCC has been addressing closing the skills gap.

Its best practice example was the recent hiring of former industry leader Elbert Lassiter as RCC’s new vice president of workforce development and continuing education.

He added that Randolph County’s experiences with plant closings, like Black and Decker, Goodyear and Ramtex, make closing the interest gap “a hard sell.” But he said today’s local industry is “advanced manufacturing, modern manufacturing.”

Shackleford also said he’s upset each spring when graduates say there are no jobs in Randolph County. “There are so many wellpaying career opportunities. We have incredible opportunities.”

Ralls also noted that it used to be in North Carolina that someone “went to college to not work in a mill or tobacco field.” He said one of the challenges is “how to change the mindset with a heightened sense of telling the story.”

A New Direction for Continuing Education Randolph Community College shifted direction recently with the creation of a new division with a “laser focus on workforce development” with the overall goal of “closing the skills gap” between job applicants and jobs available today, according to RCC President Robert S. Shackleford.

Aquaponics Lab Draws Wide Interest

The event was an excellent opportunity for local residents to learn about aquaponic food production and the wide spectrum of aquaponics systems, from counter top to commercial production, said Bryan Marbert, department chair for sciences, health and physical education at RCC. Marbert and Kevin Jones, Department of Science lab facilitator, hosted several tours of the lab to school groups, local residents interested in establishing their own aquaponics systems, and the media.

Aquaponics is quickly becoming a staple for food production in many communities worldwide, according to Marbert. The integration of aquaculture (fish production) and hydroponics (the soilless growing of plants) into one system allows for production of a multitude of fish, fruit and vegetables on a small or large scale year round. Both components of the system complement each other with the fish waste providing an organic food source for the growing plants and the plants acting as a natural filter for the water the fish live in.

In combining both systems, aquaponics capitalizes on the benefits of each organism and eliminates their drawbacks.

WGHP Fox 8 News, WXLV 45/Time Warner Cable News, and WXII 12 all aired news stories about the lab, prompting one Randolph County resident to call the College and report that RCC was the “talk of Biscuitville” all day long because of the story.

RIBN Program for

Nursing Randolph Community College increased the educational opportunities available for nursing students in Randolph County in 2014 by joining the Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses (RIBN) in the Triad-Triangle program. TriadTriangle RIBN is a partnership between RCC, Wake Technical Community College, Durham Technical Community College, Forsyth Technical Community College, and Winston-Salem State University.

The program is designed to increase the health of our community by making it easier and more accessible to obtain a bachelor of nursing degree, according to Amanda Brewer (left), student success advocate for the program. In addition, nurses with bachelor degrees have more career and educational opportunities, she said.

Students in the RIBN program are dually enrolled at RCC and at Winston-Salem State University, so the transition to WSSU to complete the BSN is seamless. Students completing a BSN through this program can save thousands of dollars by paying community college tuition for three years and the distance-learning rate for WSSU. Successful students will take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) after their third year, so they are eligible to work part-time as a nurse during their final year of college.

By Cathy Hefferin A fast, shiny automobile with a “Dodge by Petty” badge on the front grill is a possession that might be admired by many. But five Randolph Community College students have a similar badge of honor—the bragging rights to “Education

by Petty” thanks to a unique job-shadowing experience they participated in recently at Petty’s Garage, Richard Petty’s high performance speed shop in Level Cross.

Three Automotive Systems Technology students and two Collision Repair & Refinishing Technology students spent a week working alongside the technicians at Petty’s Garage.

“It was an amazing experience, getting to meet the King and getting to work on old classic cars,” said Israel Velazquez, an 18-year-old, first-year Collision Repair & Refinishing Technology student who graduated from Southwest Randolph High School. “I wouldn’t mind doing it again.”

In addition to Velazquez, the students involved were Jacob Garner of Robbins, Jacob Brown of Ramseur, Jake Flinchum of Seagrove, and Justin Lackey of Trinity. RCC instructors said the participating students were chosen based on their interest, availability, and grade point average.

Lackey, 18, who is a graduate of Wheatmore High School, said he has worked on the engines of family cars for several years, but he wanted to learn body work at RCC. His experience at Petty’s Garage was eye opening. “It’s good to see how it works in the real world,” he said, “the pace you have to work and the experience you need.” He hopes to earn his associate degree, get some experience in a body shop, and then open up a shop of his own.

A 19-year-old graduate of North Moore High School, Flincham is a second-year student in RCC’s Automotive Systems Technology program. He said the most valuable thing he learned at Petty’s Garage was “to have a positive attitude about what you are doing.” He said he learned a lot about fabrication, installing heads and cams. During the Petty experience, he helped work on 2013 and 2014 Dodge Challengers and a few classic cars, including a ’51 Mercury and a ’54 Buick.

“RCC is delighted to extend our partnership with Richard Petty and his organization,” said RCC President Robert S. Shackleford Jr. “What an exciting opportunity to have students in RCC’s Richard Petty Education Center participate in an internship at Petty’s Garage in Level Cross. I am extremely pleased with this relationship.”

“The Petty’s Garage and RCC student intern agreement will provide a great opportunity for select students to experience some of the lesser common branches of Collision Repair and Automotive skills such as body modifications as well as

true restorations and, of course, increased performance,” said Danny Moore, department head for Collision Repair & Refinishing Technology. “The students will also be awakened to the need to absorb all the information and hands-on practices offered in the Collision Repair and Automotive programs while attending RCC.” Don Ashley, department head for Automotive Systems Technology, agreed. “This agreement provides students real world experience in a working shop environment where they can further develop their employability skills; and also gives those students an opportunity to build on the instruction they have received while in our program(s). I believe this will be a great experience for our students!”

Greg Steadman, shop foreman at Petty’s Garage, said the students work on whatever current jobs are in the shop at the time of the internship. “We get to see the different talent come through the program, and the students benefit from it because all shops offer a different experience,” he said.

In addition, Petty’s Garage will accept resumes from RCC students for job openings that come available during the terms of the agreement. Petty’s Garage already employs one RCC graduate, Robert Smith, who graduated in 2012 with an associate degree in Collision Repair & Refinishing Technology

and a diploma in Autobody Repair. Smith is also an instructor for RCC’s Continuing Education autobody classes.

Enrollment in RCC’s Automotive Systems Technology and Collision Repair and Refinishing Technology programs has dramatically increased since the opening of the Richard Petty Education Center in 2009.

This modern, 20,000-square-foot facility includes spacious automotive bays surrounded by the latest technology and equipment. Dedicated classrooms are equipped with electronic data projectors and Smart Boards, and a computer lab contains 20 computers with industry-specific software and wireless capabilities.

The lobby of the center highlights its namesake with racing photographs and memorabilia, a Richard Petty history wall with the King’s signature, and a custom-designed couch made from a competition 80’s stock car. Above all, the facility provides a modern, comfortable, and safe learning environment.

Message from the RCC Foundation Board President The Randolph Community College Foundation had an exciting 2013-2014 school year. We provided nearly $513,000 to RCC and its students, our fifth annual Dancing with the Randolph Stars was bigger than ever, and we surpassed our fundraising goal for the year. We thank you— our generous donors—for these successes!

The largest portion of RCC Foundation support is for student scholarships, which are available for both college credit and non-credit occupational courses. The Foundation also provides emergency grants to students facing unforeseen financial emergencies that would cause the student to drop out of school. Each year, many students receive assistance and are able to reach their educational goals and complete a dream—thanks to you!

Program support funds from the RCC Foundation help the College update equipment, start new programs, maintain nursing accreditation, and provide enhanced opportunities for students. Foundation grants enable the College to offer unique experiences such as the Student Leadership Academy, the Cultural Arts series, and special innovative projects recommended by faculty and staff.

Byrd Named Recipient of First Retiree Scholarship Ivey Alana Byrd of Asheboro has been awarded the first RCC Retiree Scholarship for the 2014-2015 school year from the RCC Foundation. The scholarship was established to honor retired RCC faculty and staff members. Byrd, who attended Faith Christian School and earned her high school diploma through a homeschool program, is studying Criminal Justice Technology at RCC. She was chosen from among the 2014-2015 Presidential Scholar applicants for the $1,000 scholarship. Byrd is the daughter of Brian and Gina Byrd of Asheboro.

Taste of Asheboro/Randolph The RCC Foundation raised over $5,000 for student scholarships with its Taste of Asheboro/Randolph event held on October 14. Restaurants, country clubs, and bakeries from Randolph County provided food and beverage samples for guests, and an exciting wine and pottery auction capped off the evening. FOX8 Morning News anchor Cindy Farmer served as celebrity host. Julie Moore chaired the committee of community volunteers who planned the fundraiser.

Donor Appreciation Event The RCC Foundation hosted a special event to honor donors on July 29. More than 40 people attended. Donors were recognized for their contributions during the 2014 fiscal year.

The theme for the evening was “RCC Donors Make A World Of Difference.”

RCC President Robert Shackleford spoke to the donors during the event about his personal experience with a special donor that provided him with a scholarship during his college years.

More than 50 people were recognized as President’s Circle members for contributing more than $1,000.

Five new members were inducted into the Legacy Society for making the RCC Foundation a part of their planned giving.

Donors giving more than $500 to the RCC Pledge fund were also recognized as RCC Champions. The Pledge Fund provides emergency assistance to students who need emergency funds to help them stay in school.

Dr. Shackleford also recognized retiring RCC Foundation Board of Directors members Steve Williams and Marylin Fowler.

High School Leadership Academy Rising high school freshmen had a unique opportunity to hone their leadership skills during the Randolph Community College Foundation’s first annual High School Leadership Academy. Eighth graders who live in and will attend high school in Randolph County were invited to apply during the spring semester, and 18 students were selected to participate in this one-day event that was held on June 17 in RCC’s Foundation Conference Center on the Asheboro Campus.

Topics for the day included the definition of leadership; team building; personality types and leadership styles; social media, communication and leadership; conflict resolution; situational leadership; and servant leadership. The Foundation modeled this high school leadership development program after RCC’s prestigious Student Leadership Academy.

The students were chosen for the Academy based on a competitive process that considered leadership experience, leadership potential, and a letter of reference from a faculty member.
