Randolph School provides a rigorous and well-rounded PK-12 college preparatory education within a nurturing community. Through a commitment to excellence in academics, the arts, and athletics, the School’s program and its faculty demand diligence and discipline while encouraging creativity and discovery. Above all, the School emphasizes honor, integrity, and character so that all in partnership with Randolph are elevated and inspired to enrich their families, communities, the nation, and the world.
As a member institution, Randolph School is committed to the principles of diversity as stated by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). The Report on Philanthropy is published yearly by the Advancement Office of Randolph School and is distributed free of charge to alumni, faculty, families, and friends of the School. This report reflects gifts made to Randolph from July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024. Every effort has been made to avoid errors and omissions. If, however, an error has been made, please accept our apology and notify the Development Office at 256-799-6106 so that we may correct our records.

Dear Randolph Community,
As we reflect on our journey and the strides we’ve made towards our vision of excellence, I am both inspired and grateful for the unwavering support of our Randolph community. The commitment to creating a vibrant, innovative learning environment is exemplified in our recent accomplishments and ongoing projects, which are made possible through your generosity.
This year’s Report on Philanthropy highlights the incredible generosity of our community. Because of your support, Randolph set new records in the Randolph Fund Campaign, Under the Christmas Tree, and other giving opportunities. This translates into tangible benefits for our students, from enhanced learning technologies to vital professional development for our faculty.
Two of the most exciting developments this year are the purchase of 26 additional acres on Garth and the groundbreaking for the Leo Center for Excellence. These initiatives are not just milestones; they represent a thoughtful pursuit of our campus master plan which will eventually bring all four divisions together on a single campus and provide new learning and community spaces.
At Randolph, our core values are not mere words but principles that guide our daily actions and decisions. Philanthropy plays a crucial role in bringing these values to life. For instance, your support has allowed
us to build new STEM labs, fostering curiosity and innovation among our students. Similarly, our athletic programs, strengthened through philanthropic contributions, teach integrity and teamwork. Each donation fuels these values and enhances the overall student experience.
We also honor the legacy of past donors who have significantly shaped our campus. The Rhett Fine Arts Center, Thurber Arts Center, Shields-Jones Athletic Complex, and more were made possible by previous supporters and continue to enrich our students’ educational journey daily. Past contributions lay the groundwork for current and future successes.
As we look to the future, philanthropy remains the cornerstone of our progress. I am deeply appreciative of your commitment to Randolph and our mission. Together, we are building a brighter future for our students and advancing our vision both locally and globally.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY
Your annual gifts to Randolph School help ensure that students are prepared. Parents and guardians (current and past), alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends made gifts to the School of nearly $1,400,000 throughout the 2023-24 school year.
The Randolph Fund raised $887,000 this year and is the main source of fundraising for the School, providing support for the day-in and day-out work of our students and faculty. The Fund enables us to meet the needs of teacher classroom requests, provide ongoing curriculum reviews and updates, enhance advisory and social-emotional programs, and support continued faculty education.
Our thanks to all who have made giving to the School a priority in 2023-24. Randolph is able to do so much more for students thanks to your leadership and investment.

TORCH SOCIETY
The Randolph School Torch Society recognizes the generosity of those who have chosen to establish planned gifts to the School. Gifts from Torch Society members made through bequests, trusts, or other estate gifts, ensure the continued endowment growth and development of Randolph from one generation to the next. We honor and thank these committed donors by extending them membership in the Torch Society.
Upon our founding, community leaders in Huntsville had a vision for an independent school: a community of learners comprised of the very best educators serving students willing and able to do good work. Today, Randolph stands as North Alabama’s only PK-12 independent college preparatory school. Randolph School is honored to announce the receipt of an estate gift totaling $1.5 million from Sue and Roy Nichols. The gift was presented by their daughter, Rebecca Boone, on behalf of the family. Rebecca, along with her sisters Michele and Lisa, have often spoken of her parents’ commitment to education and community betterment and this incredibly generous gift will undoubtedly enhance Randolph’s ability to provide exceptional educational opportunities for generations to come.
In supporting quality education, the botanical gardens, the art museum, and more, Roy and Sue demonstrated their belief in enriching the lives of those within their community and nurturing the growth of future generations. The family’s devotion to serving others underscores the importance of selflessness and service. They valued sharing their resources for the greater good to make Huntsville a highly desirable place to live. Randolph School stands as a cornerstone of this vision, serving as an asset to the entire community and attracting newcomers to Huntsville.
The Nichols family’s relocation from California to Huntsville in 1973 marked the beginning of their profound impact, particularly in the realms of education and philanthropy. Roy’s expertise in defense systems, optical sensors, and information technology garnered national recognition, yet it was his unwavering commitment to long-term planning and community advancement that truly set him apart.
With the return of their daughter, Rebecca, and grandchildren, Melissa and Max, to Huntsville, Sue and Roy turned their focus to finding a school that prioritized accountability, discipline, and individual growth for every student. Randolph School’s dedication to excellence resonated deeply with them as they recognized the investment teachers made in each student, encouraging them to reach their fullest potential. Grandchildren, Melissa Sconyers Tucker ’04 and Max Sconyers ’07, seamlessly integrated into the Randolph family and embodied the ethos of excellence and service cultivated by Sue and Roy. Now, Melissa teaches at Randolph and her two children, Madison (‘34) and Camden (‘37), attend the School.
Roy served as a trustee for Randolph from 1998 until 2008 and led the board as chair from 2004-2006. During his time as chair, Roy oversaw the construction of the Music and Fitness Building on the Drake Avenue Campus, along with planning efforts for the future Upper School on the Garth Road property. When asked why the Garth Road Campus project was so important, Roy offered that, “The expansion will help Randolph retain and attract the best students, the best faculty and staff, and expand and enhance the curricular and extracurricular offerings.”
The generous gift in memory of Sue and Roy holds significance for all of us at Randolph School. Roy’s leadership and legacy has forever shaped our school and we are truly grateful for his forward-thinking vision, and the commitment to serving the wider community that he and Sue exemplified throughout their lives. Roy and Sue Nichols made a profoundly positive impact on those around them, shaping Huntsville and Randolph for years to come.

The Board of Trustees at Randolph plays a crucial role in shaping the school’s educational experience and strategic direction. Our decisions and oversight ensure that the school maintains high standards and continues to thrive. The work impacts the administration and faculty as well as the students’ learning environment and opportunities.
Serving on the Board of Trustees leaves a profound impact on its members and the broader Randolph community. It highlights the importance of looking beyond the immediate school environment and preparing students to be compassionate and driven members of society after graduation.
Philanthropy is deeply embedded in the culture at Randolph. From early on, students participate in projects like toy drives in the Lower School and dedicated philanthropy days in the Middle and Upper Schools. These experiences teach them the value of helping their community, leaving a lasting impression that hopefully guides their actions throughout their lives.
Supporting the Randolph Fund is more important now than ever. Since becoming a Randolph parent in 2008, I have been actively involved in the Randolph Fund, witnessing firsthand the tangible benefits of participation. Contributions can result in new classroom furniture, advanced technology like smartboards, and professional development for faculty, all of which enhance the educational experience. The dynamic changes and continuous improvements on campus are exciting to witness and be a part of.
My personal experiences at Randolph, especially through events like “Under the Christmas Tree,” have deeply inspired me. Volunteering has allowed me to forge connections with faculty, parents, and community members that I otherwise might not have met. It’s rewarding to see familiar faces at community events, emphasizing the lasting relationships built through these efforts. Volunteering even a small amount of time can make a significant difference and is immensely gratifying.
Throughout my various roles at Randolph, I’ve seen firsthand how essential volunteers are to the school’s success. Whether it’s serving on a committee, contributing to a teacher appreciation lunch, supporting arts and athletics events, or even making a financial gift, every contribution matters. I encourage everyone to find a way to give back—whether with your time, talents, or resources. Each effort enriches the entire school community and makes a lasting impact.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Independent Governance
As an independent school, Randolph is governed by a Board of Trustees whose members serve the School on a voluntary basis. The Board is responsible for the Head of School, and it’s primary work is long-term and strategic. The Head of School, in partnership with School administration, is responsible for the day-to-day operation and management. The Board follows the Principles of Good Practice published by NAIS, the National Association of Independent Schools, of which Randolph is a member.

My role at Randolph over the years has been one of teaching and classroom support and I have enjoyed that very much! Our availability to students allows both learning and fun to coexist, which in turn causes parents to understand that they are vital in the process of their children’s education, all while allowing the education professionals to do what they are expertly trained to do.
I was raised in an area of Texas that was not as affluent as most of Huntsville. Randolph’s Tailored Tuition Program allows children of the North Alabama area to attend a top-notch school even if their families’ personal finances would not otherwise allow for this private education. This is very important to me and is one of the primary reasons I give back to the community that I now reside in.
The lasting impression of philanthropic efforts is not only apparent in the opportunities that Tailored Tuition provides; it is also clearly seen in the caliber of facilities that Randolph provides to students. From science labs to artistic creative environments, the opportunities for our students to learn and grow from Pre-K through 12th grade are second to none.
I would encourage others to keep in mind that giving to the Annual Fund and/or special projects is beneficial for their own children! The Annual Fund and special projects are what makes Randolph the best educational choice in Alabama. It is what makes Randolph the standout of educational entities. I would encourage others to donate to both funds because supporting these funds allows the children in the community at large to benefit. We have been part of the Randolph family for over a decade and have seen firsthand how the funds donated have impacted our school. We trust the Randolph leadership with our donation because they know areas of greater needs.
The role of philanthropy for Randolph is a clear understanding that you are giving of yourself from your heart, for the benefit of your entire community. The significance is knowing that your generosity will impact the educational capacity of your own children as well as other children in your surrounding community.

The impact of this philanthropy is evident in every aspect of a Randolph education. It enables students to immerse themselves deeply in their studies, whether through extensive science labs and technology-integrated math curricula that bring textbook learning to life, comprehensive history courses that connect past to present in innovative ways, or novel English programs that reveal the contemporary relevance of literature.
Complemented by robust art programs and unparalleled athletics, these academic opportunities provide students with an education of extraordinary breadth and depth. While many students may not fully appreciate it until they have graduated and gained perspective, the Randolph experience is truly a rare and valuable one.
When my family moved to Huntsville in 2002 and I started kindergarten at Randolph, the school became the foundation of our lives. It connected us with other families, helped my sister and me find our career paths, and remains a place we return to with deep nostalgia for the time it played a central role in our daily lives.
For me, the faculty and friends I encountered at Randolph have had a profound impact on my life. The teachers ignited my curiosity and helped me find confidence in myself, while the friends I made have remained close, supporting me through major life milestones. They roomed with me in college, helped me move across the country for my first job, and have stayed connected through a group text that has been active every day since our graduation ten years ago.
As alumni, we come to recognize the immense value of those who gave in various ways to make our experience possible. Supporting Randolph ensures that future students can enjoy the same transformative education and sense of community that we did.

My engagement has deepened my connections with peers and families as we collectively embrace academics, arts, athletics, and leadership opportunities. While participation can be demanding and sometimes stressful, it plays a crucial role in shaping future leaders and provides life skills that will serve us well in college and beyond.

The Campaign for Randolph School
Over the past 65 years, both Huntsville and Randolph School have undergone remarkable growth and change. As Huntsville has become a hub for 21st-century industries, Randolph has thrived alongside it. Since opening our doors in 1959, Randolph has been the educational leader in our community, providing a nurturing environment that fosters intellectual curiosity, personal growth, and excellence in academics, the arts, and athletics.
Randolph’s Building Community Campaign ensures continuity for a legacy of excellence by creating and expanding our environment for future community leaders. The Leo Center for Excellence and the new Lower School will provide unique opportunities where collaboration and innovation come together, allowing our teachers to inspire and our students to thrive.
The recent property acquisition presents Randolph School with a remarkable opportunity for growth and transformation. Our highest priority is to create additional space for our expanding Lower School, supporting Pre-K through 4th grade. This move is essential to meet the increasing demand and address our current waitlists in all Lower School grades.
In the summer of 2024, Randolph School purchased 26 acres of additional land to expand our Garth Road campus to 77 acres. This acquisition provides contiguous, buildable land to reunite our Pre-K through 12th grade school community over time. It allows for creating new academic spaces, roads, parking, outdoor areas, athletic fields, and playgrounds, while preserving essential “elbow room” for future growth and adaptation.
In August of 2024, the School broke ground on the Leo Center for Excellence. The Leo Center for Excellence is a state-of-the-art facility that will not only enhance our athletic programs but also integrate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) opportunities as well as serve as a gathering space for our entire community to connect.

From the original schoolhouse on Randolph Avenue to the campus on Drake Avenue and the expanding Garth complex, each step in the school’s growth has been made possible by the support of Randolph families. Randolph encourages the establishment of endowed funds to support the mission of the School. Endowed funds may be established to support scholarships, faculty salaries, professional development, or specific programs. The principal of the endowed funds remains invested and untouched in perpetuity; a percentage of the invested income being used to support the School each year. Established in 2015, the Edward E. The Hughes-Monaghan Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established in 2003 by Mary Shepard and Cutter Hughes in honor of their family. The Fund provides tuition credit to students from historically underrepresented populations. Rupa Kakani Scholarship Award
Rupa Kakani ’88’s untimely death while on a school-sponsored trip with her class is recognized each year at graduation ceremonies with this fund that awards a cash gift to a graduating senior. The recipient is selected by the School and is honored with a citation that reads in part: “To affect the quality of the day is the highest of arts and there are students who, through their wit, their smiles, their intellect, and their amiability, affect the quality of the daily routine at Randolph School.” Such was Rupa.

The Kofskey Fund is a living memorial, which has been set up in recognition of Betty Kofskey, a former Randolph School faculty member. The Lyle Alumni Award
The Lyle Alumni Award for Enthusiasm originated in 1976. In 1988 the fund was restructured to annually award a tuition credit to a male and female Randolph student “completing the 9th grade, as selected by a faculty committee, who demonstrate the characteristics of enthusiasm, industriousness, pride in achievement, conscientiousness, and performance to the best of one’s innate ability in both academic and nonacademic activities.”

The Anthony J. Lynch Award
This fund is “presented annually to one member of the faculty or administration who consistently demonstrates the characteristics epitomized by Commander Anthony J. Lynch – dedication, leadership, character and the willingness to give consistently that extra effort above and beyond what is expected.” A second award of annual tuition credit that will pay all or part of tuition and fees is presented to a student who is a U.S. citizen. The student must demonstrate the qualities of deep concern for others, truth, honesty and love for country.

The Matthew Pettis Naylor Memorial Scholarship Award
This award, a tuition credit, is presented to a rising junior who best exemplifies certain qualities of Matthew Naylor, a member of the Class of 2002, who died in an automobile accident on June 7, 2000. A Christian and a sportsman, Matthew engaged himself fully in the world around him. He loved his family, cherished his friends, and respected his teachers. The recipient of the award demonstrates Matthew’s enthusiasm, individuality, confidence and conscientiousness. Like Matthew, he or she enjoys learning, shows a special interest in literature and history, consistently performs to the best of his or her ability, and encourages excellence in others.

The Jim Niedergeses Award
Jim Niedergeses was a member of the Class of 1984. His life ended tragically, the result of an automobile accident. The Niedergeses family established this award in 1987 to honor his memory and to “recognize a student who exemplifies the attitude and effort of striving to go further than he or she has ever done before.” The recipient is selected by the Health and Physical Education Department Chair each year.

Sapra Family Scholarship Fund

The Trey Wilbourn Memorial Scholarship
Capt. James N. Wilbourn, III, USMC (“Trey”) was a member of the Randolph class of 1980 and an excellent athlete. His outstanding military career culminated in his assignment as a pilot. In 1991, his Harrier jet was shot down in central Kuwait, ending the life of this true patriot. Trey was the first Alabamian to lose his life in the Gulf War. The Wilbourn family created a scholarship in his memory that is awarded annually to a rising junior or senior who has at least a 3.0 grade point average and has participated in at least two sports at Randolph.

Executive Assistant to the Head of School
My journey with Randolph School began as a student and has been transformative, not just for me but for my entire family. As an alumna, I discovered my passion for the French language at the school, which inspired me to travel to Paris and later become a French teacher at Randolph. Today, I am proud to serve as the Executive Assistant to the Head of School and to have my daughters, Catherine (Pirani) Sullivan ’14 and Elizabeth (Pirani) Cook ’12, as integral members of the Randolph community. Both graduated from Randolph and now hold pivotal roles, with Catherine as the Director of Alumni Relations & Special Events and Elizabeth as the Associate Director of College Counseling. The strong foundation we built at Randolph has prepared us well for our lives ahead.
Randolph is more than just a workplace; it is our second home. It is a place where students grow in knowledge, confidence, and character. Whether it’s during the school day or at music and theater events, art exhibits, or sporting events, our community fosters a deep sense of belonging. I have always felt supported and appreciated here, beyond my expectations.
What makes Randolph special is the integration of academics, athletics, and the arts into each student’s experience. Our approach to teaching allows students to find their place and contribute meaningfully. Experiential learning is a cornerstone of this journey, with activities like immigration simulations, class trips to Williamsburg and Space Camp, and interim trips to various cities and countries, bringing learning to life and forging lasting connections among students.
Throughout my years at Randolph, I’ve had the privilege of wearing many hats, each offering unique opportunities to contribute to the school’s culture. As Executive Assistant to the Head of School, I’ve helped foster connections among faculty and staff members, engaging colleagues through special activities during meetings and organizing events like pickleball clinics and trivia nights. It is a pleasure to help build community.
The generosity of our families is the driving force behind the extraordinary experiences we offer. Supporting the Randolph Fund transforms our educational dreams into reality. Years ago, I served on the approval board for the Randolph Fund, witnessing firsthand how our community comes together to support our faculty and their incredible ideas.

Volunteerism plays a crucial role in the educational experience by providing opportunities for parents, grandparents, and friends to be able to give back to the Randolph Community, help develop new skills, and foster a sense of social responsibility.
My husband, Brad, and I both love volunteering wherever we can. We absolutely love seeing the Randolph community benefit from not just our volunteer efforts but also those of so many other extremely giving individuals in the community.
By actively volunteering at School events, parents not only show their support for the School but also become positive role models for the students. When students see their parents’ involvement in School activities, it creates a sense of community and togetherness. Whether it’s helping in the classroom, organizing events, or chaperoning field trips, parent volunteers play a vital role in enhancing the overall school environment by fostering a sense of community, providing valuable support, and enriching the overall educational experience.
We have seen firsthand what giving to Randolph can do for our students and community. Brad and I are so incredibly grateful for the faculty and staff at Randolph. They are the major reason we give; to support them in our shared vision for our children. Helping them create a space that is special for ALL children is our primary goal.

It is with honor and gratitude that we celebrate the retirement of Deb Smith, who served Randolph as a school nurse for 25 years. During her tenure, she became a beloved figure by students and faculty alike, providing her professionalism and care to all who may have needed it. We are incredibly thankful for her years of service and commitment to our community, and wish her the very best in the years to come.
“If we believed that the health of the school was measured by the level of activity in Nurse Deb’s clinic, we would be in bad shape; Deb is never out of customers and if there is anyone in this school who feels needed, it should be Nurse Smith. She not only cares for students with incredible skill, but she also nurses the rest of the faculty to help us get through the year. If it’s not Swine Flu, it’s a fine slew of patients that are in debt to her this year.”

UNDER THE CHRISTMAS TREE
For 39 years, Under the Christmas Tree has been Randolph School’s signature fundraising event. It raises funds for our Tailored Tuition Program and provides an opportunity for the Randolph Community to engage with one another in support of our school. In 2023, the three-day holiday shopping market featured vendors from across the southeastern United States, along with special events like Mimosas at the Market, Storytime with Santa, and Elf University. Thanks to our committee, sponsors, and volunteers, we raised a historic amount of $178,000 in support of Randolph’s Tailored Tuition Program.

SPRING SWING
Greengate School celebrated a successful night at the 15th annual fundraising gala, Spring Swing. From its early days to the present, Greengate has transformed the lives of children with dyslexia through education and advocacy. Greengate School at Randolph is the state’s only dyslexia instructional program accredited by the Orton Gillingham Academy, and only one of 18 in the nation. Greengate believes that every child should have the opportunity to learn regardless of a family’s financial situation. All Spring Swing proceed support tuition assistance and teacher training. WAYS TO GIVE
ENDOWMENT
Support Randolph’s community of learners in perpetuity by giving to the Endowment. Most commonly, donors make a planned gift to Randolph or open a life insurance policy.
Major gifts to Randolph are most commonly associated with improving our built environment. From campus updating to new spaces that improve the student experience, major gifts are essential for the growth and renewal of our environment.
ANNUAL GIVING
The foundation of our philanthropic programming. As a non-profit, it is essential that we generate a healthy annual giving program to the Randolph Fund, so that our current programs are strong and healthy. Tuition alone does not pay for the Randolph experience. Annual giving is critical to our success.
MAJOR GIFTS NAMING OPPORTUNITIES
We are eager to highlight the private support that it takes to make a school like Randolph financially healthy. Supportive families and supportive companies can leave a legacy at Randolph by naming many of our un-named spaces. With opportunities from a variety of giving levels, we would like to discuss ways to show your support of and commitment to Randolph.
VOLUNTEER
Randolph’s greatest asset is people, and as members of the Randolph Community Network, you play an active role in strengthening our community. There are numerous opportunities to become involved: in the classroom, at an athletic event, play or musical, Under the Christmas Tree, or Spring Swing. Because campus is always buzzing with activities, our students benefit from volunteerism during the school day, after school, in the evenings, and on weekends; volunteers are always needed! When you volunteer at Randolph, everyone benefits – students, faculty, and you!
