Randolph School provides a rigorous and well-rounded PK-12 college preparatory education within a nurturing community. Through a commitment to excellence in academics, the arts, and athletics, the School’s program and its faculty demand diligence and discipline while encouraging creativity and discovery. Above all, the School emphasizes honor, integrity, and character so that all in partnership with Randolph are elevated and inspired to enrich their families, communities, the nation, and the world.
The Report on Philanthropy is published yearly by the Advancement Office of Randolph School and is distributed free of charge to alumni, faculty, families, and friends of the School. This report reflects gifts made to Randolph from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023. Every effort has been made to avoid errors and omissions. If, however, an error has been made, please accept our apology and notify the Development Office at 256-799-6106 so that we may correct our records.

In the Class of 2023, three students were recognized as National Merit Finalists. Four students were selected as National Merit Commended Scholars.

The graduates earned acceptances to separate universities and will attend colleges in states. received a scholarship at the institution they’ve chosen to attend.
• Two Students had perfect scores on the ACT or SAT.
• Three Seniors were among 32,000 from across the country to earn academic honors from the College Board’s National Recognition Programs.
• Four student athletes will pursue their athletic endeavors at the collegiate level.
• Thirteen student artists will continue on in visual or performing arts in college.

HEAD OF SCHOOL MESSAGE
When I think of Randolph Today & Tomorrow, the title also given to our Strategic Plan, I’m filled with hope and excitement about the future of our school. In 2022, the work to strengthen our culture of belonging and support for faculty, staff, and families began and will continue in the coming years. We provide exceptional educational opportunities and recognize that we must enhance our facilities to reflect the caliber of learning experiences taking place. Our current and future students deserve this.
One of the goals of the strategic priority, Build for the Future, is to develop a campus master plan and there are compelling reasons to do so. Primarily, families are increasingly seeking out Randolph School as the place where they want their children to learn and grow intellectually, socially, and ethically. Our mission statement of Seeking Truth. Building Character. Nurturing All. aligns with their own hopes and dreams for their children and we want to thoughtfully accommodate this interest and growth intentionally. Our master planning consultant has repeatedly reminded us that schools only grow through the generosity of their donors.
As you will see in this Report on Philanthropy, the Randolph community has been exceedingly generous over the past year. Because of you, Randolph set new records in the Randolph Fund Campaign, Under the Christmas Tree, and other giving opportunities. This generosity translates directly into new learning opportunities for our students through the addition of expert educators, learning specialists,
and other roles that help shape the experience of each student at Randolph. Your generosity also allows us to invest in new learning technology and provide vital professional development for our faculty and staff. Our goal is that each child is challenged daily and able to learn in an environment that is safe and supportive.
As we envision the Randolph of tomorrow, we know that the generosity of our donors is key to realizing our plans. I’m grateful for your commitment to our students and faculty. BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Independent Governance
As an independent school, Randolph is governed by a Board of Trustees whose members serve the School on a voluntary basis. The Board is responsible for the Head of School, and it’s primary work is long-term and strategic. The Head of School, in partnership with school administration, is responsible for the day-to-day operation and management. The Board follows the Principles of Good Practice published by NAIS, the National Association of Independent Schools, of which Randolph is a member.

TORCH SOCIETY
The Randolph School Torch Society recognizes the generosity of those who have chosen to establish planned gifts to the School. Gifts from Torch Society members made through bequests, trusts, or other estate gifts, ensure the continued endowment growth and development of Randolph from one generation to the next. Upon our founding, community leaders in Huntsville had a vision for an independent school: a community of learners comprised of the very best educators serving students willing and able to do good work. It only takes a brief conversation to figure out who and what I love most - my family, friends, alma mater Duke University, and Randolph School. My passion for supporting the School started immediately when we joined the community in 2011. Over time, that has deepened as my roles evolved from parent, to Trustee, and now the parent of three alumni.
Every decision by the Board of Trustees impacts our school, and the intent is always to strive for excellence. Having served eight years in various roles including Secretary and Development Chair, as well as co-chairing the transition committee for the merger with Greengate School, I have great trust in the way the School operates and uses each dollar received from donors.
For our family, giving back shows appreciation for the value that remains evident in our children. Each of them had teachers or coaches who recognized their specific gifts. Crossan is pursuing a doctorate in economics, a passion first discovered in an AP Economics course at Randolph. Cole’s advisor helped with a dramatic monologue during his involvement with Theatre Randolph, preparing him for mock trial competitions in college and now, in law school. As a newcomer to the team, Curtis’ soccer coach created a welcoming environment where he was mentored. Additionally, Curtis refined his athletic and leadership skills on the soccer, basketball, and football teams. He wouldn’t be on the football team at Duke now without those opportunities with Randolph Athletics.
Our whole family is invested, and we give with confidence, year after year, to ensure that Randolph remains a place where each student is known, valued, and nurtured.

Randolph School is renowned for providing students a strong academic foundation while developing the tenets of good citizenship, with all that term encompasses. That’s why families from different communities across North Alabama and all walks of life choose Randolph to invest in their children’s education. However, tuition only covers the core expenses. Philanthropy, in the form of financial donations and the even more precious donation of physical presence through volunteering, is what enhances Randolph’s excellence as an institution of teaching and learning. We volunteer our time and finances to help our granddaughter, Haddie Mac, and other students maximize their Randolph experience.
President James Madison shared this during one of his State of the Union Addresses, “…a well-instructed people alone can be a permanently free people.” Our philanthropy is based on that sentiment. Based on twenty years serving in the United States military and having visited and lived in many places around the globe, we are convinced the United States is the most exceptional country in the world. We also know that it takes citizens who are steadfast in their belief in liberty and who are critical thinkers to sustain that exceptionalism.
As Haddie Mac’s parents inspire intellectual curiosity and provide the religious, moral and ethical underpinnings of good citizenship at home, we are counting on Randolph to encourage and reinforce critical thinking skills through programs at school. Students may not have a reference point to compare how philanthropy impacts their educational experience at Randolph, but adults in their lives do. We believe our actions today will enrich the lives of generations to come.

The inspiration to support the Randolph Fund and other fundraising initiatives is abundant within our school community. LEGACY GIVING
Randolph encourages the establishment of endowed funds to support the mission of the School. Endowed funds may be established to support scholarships, faculty salaries, professional development, or specific programs. The principal of the endowed funds remains invested and untouched in perpetuity; a percentage of the invested income being used to support the School each year. Many donors choose to honor or memorialize a family member, friend, or faculty member through the naming of endowed funds.

Established in 2015, the Edward E. Betty and Charles Grisham, well known for their support of the arts and education, established this endowment in 1995 for teacher development and graduate education, a testament to their love for Randolph School, as former parents and grandparents.

The Hughes-Monaghan Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established in 2003 by Mary Shepard and Cutter Hughes in honor of their family. The Fund provides tuition credit to students from historically underrepresented populations. Any recipient should meet Randolph School’s highest standards for enrollment. This scholarship can be used to supplement a 75% financial aid scholarship, covering up to no more than 95% of the total tuition.

The Rupa Kakani Scholarship Award
Rupa Kakani ’88’s untimely death while on a school-sponsored trip with her class is recognized each year at graduation ceremonies with this fund that awards a cash gift to a graduating senior. The recipient is selected by the School and is honored with a citation that reads in part: “To affect the quality of the day is the highest of arts and there are students who, through their wit, their smiles, their intellect, and their amiability, affect the quality of the daily routine at Randolph School.” Such was Rupa.

The Kofskey Fund is a living memorial, which has been set up in recognition of Betty Kofskey, a former Randolph School faculty member. The Lyle Alumni Award for Enthusiasm originated in 1976. This fund is “presented annually to one member of the faculty or administration who consistently demonstrates the characteristics epitomized by Commander Anthony J. Lynch – dedication, leadership, character and the willingness to give consistently that extra effort above and beyond what is expected.” A second award of annual tuition credit that will pay all or part of tuition and fees is presented to a student who is a U.S. citizen. The student must demonstrate the qualities of deep concern for others, truth, honesty and love for country.

The Matthew Pettis Naylor Memorial Scholarship Award
This award, a tuition credit, is presented to a rising junior who best exemplifies certain qualities of Matthew Naylor, a member of the Class of 2002, who died in an automobile accident on June 7, 2000. A Christian and a sportsman, Matthew engaged himself fully in the world around him. He loved his family, cherished his friends, and respected his teachers. The recipient of the award demonstrates Matthew’s enthusiasm, individuality, confidence and conscientiousness. Like Matthew, he or she enjoys learning, shows a special interest in literature and history, consistently performs to the best of his or her ability, and encourages excellence in others.

The Jim Niedergeses Award
Jim Niedergeses was a member of the Class of 1984. His life ended tragically, the result of an automobile accident. The Niedergeses family established this award in 1987 to honor his memory and to “recognize a student who exemplifies the attitude and effort of striving to go further than he or she has ever done before.” The recipient is selected by the Health and Physical Education Department Chair each year.

Sapra Family Scholarship Fund
This Fund was established in 2020 to provide tuition coverage for students with dyslexia from historically underrepresented backgrounds to attend Greengate School’s summer camp experience. Without the Sapra Scholarship, recipients would not otherwise be able to attend the summer camp program.

The Trey Wilbourn Memorial Scholarship
Capt. James N. Wilbourn, III, USMC (“Trey”) was a member of the Randolph class of 1980 and an excellent athlete. His outstanding military career culminated in his assignment as a pilot. In 1991, his Harrier jet was shot down in central Kuwait, ending the life of this true patriot. Trey was the first Alabamian to lose his life in the Gulf War. The Wilbourn family created a scholarship in his memory that is awarded annually to a rising junior or senior who has at least a 3.0 grade point average and has participated in at least two sports at Randolph.

It’s always been our belief that the best schools thrive, and students flourish, where there is a shared belief in giving. Whether it was volunteering, donating funds, or prioritizing our time to ensure that we could be present and get to know teachers and other families, we have always chosen to fully commit to our child’s school experience. We were eager to continue that involvement when we joined the Randolph School community.
From our initial visits to the campus to finishing our first full year in the Middle School, we have experienced such a warm welcome and witnessed how our son was embraced by teachers and staff. In his first year at Randolph, HE was the one waking US up to go to school each day. We are grateful our son has found his fit here at Randolph.
While enriching and unique, the learning environment and educational experiences at Randolph come with costs – facility maintenance, supplies, and personnel expenses, just to name a few. Our philosophy about giving is straightforward – give as you are able. For some, that may be financial. For others, they may give their time through volunteerism. Families can also inquire about donation matching programs through their employer that could benefit Randolph, which is a 501(c)(3) organization. What’s most important is that each family finds some way to contribute because it benefits all of our children and demonstrates to them how giving impacts the lives of others. This is an understanding they will carry for the rest of their lives.
Six Upper School students attended the Student Diversity Leadership Conference, which takes place concurrently with the People of Color Conference, the flagship of the NAIS’s commitment to equity and justice in teaching, learning, and organizational development.
Middle and Upper School students received official recognition on the National Spanish Exam, earning 126 medals overall. Nationally, Randolph ranked 5th (gold), 8th (silver), and 32nd (bronze). Four students earned perfect scores!
A record number of student athletes (14) were selected to all-state teams in girls soccer, boys soccer, cross country, and football. Additionally, more than 30 new school records were set during the 2022-23 school year in nine varsity programs.
During Interim Week, students explored interests outside the classroom through mini-courses, community service, travel to other states and countries, and job shadowing.
The Upper School Concert Choir received Superior (I) ratings from all three judges at the Alabama Vocal Association’s State Choral Performance Assessment and earned a perfect score for sight reading!
Nine Randolph students in the Middle and Upper Schools, an unprecedented number, were selected for the All-State Honor Band, District I Honor Band, or both.
Upper School students participated in the North American Invitational Model UN hosted by Georgetown University. For the first time in school history, Hannon Bulger ‘23 won the “Verbal Commendation” award.
Two students received honorable mentions in the 2023 Congressional Art Competition. Five others were Blue Ribbon Finalists in the District V Visual Arts Achievement Program The Killers poster by Sam Davis ’24, won 2nd place statewide.
The Varsity Boys Golf Team won the 5A State Championship, competing at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National Course in Auburn/ Opelika.

When my family moved to Huntsville in December of 2011, I was 14 years old and midway through the 8th grade. I felt wary of all the incoming changes in our lives. At Randolph, I expected to feel like an outsider. Instead, I was welcomed with open arms. Other students who started as strangers became lifelong friends. Teachers and coaches evolved into mentors and an extension of my family. Almost unknowingly, I found myself woven into the fabric of Randolph’s tight-knit community. The unwavering commitment of the faculty and staff to high standards and excellence, both inside and outside of the classroom, deepened my sense of self and elevated my confidence.
The sense of community that I experienced at Randolph is something I will continue to seek and strive for. It’s a community that emphasizes good citizenship, honor, and integrity and actively cultivates it. When I was a student, January Service Day resonated with me and helped me find charitable causes that I was passionate about. Using the gifts and talents propelled by a Randolph education puts alumni in a special position to make a lasting difference.
Philanthropic efforts teach us to practice and develop the invaluable skills of empathy and generosity. Randolph provides unparalleled opportunities that set students up for success, both in college and their future careers. The dedication to enhanced programs and unique learning experiences cannot be upheld without the continued support from those who have benefited in the past, myself included. When I reflect on my time at Randolph, it was so enriching. Whether it was in the classroom, during extracurricular activities, or learning beyond the campus, the opportunities will help shape the person I am for the rest of my life. I’ve had the opportunity to study, practice and perform in the state-of-the-art academic buildings, athletic facilities, and art centers. That, along with the constant support of my teachers, coaches, and advisors, played a significant role in my personal, academic, artistic, and physical development as a student.
Without question, philanthropy is crucial in sustaining the outstanding programs within our school that have impacted me in so many positive ways, as well as my classmates. Serving as SGA President, as well as a Student Ambassador, captain of the football and basketball teams, an 8-year member of the concert band, Optimist Club Vice President, and a huddle leader for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, I’ve been fortunate to witness and benefit from the generosity of others. I’ve also been compelled to give to Randolph and other causes championed by my peers. I remember hearing the passionate plea of a classmate who was raising funds for cancer research and choosing to donate all the monetary gifts from my birthday. I believe when there is a need, responding with generosity can strengthen our school community and impact generations of students to come.
At Randolph School, the importance of giving is impressed upon us as students. We are given the chance to invest in the future. For me, it’s an easy choice because I have immense gratitude for my educational experience.

We have no shortage of stories to illustrate how well a Randolph education sets our students up for success in life. We’ve witnessed students’ passion for community service when they volunteer around North Alabama. Our oldest grandson has graduated from college and is now a working professional. The groundwork of study, character building, knowledge obtained, truth sought, sportsmanship learned, and guidance as he was finding his place in the world were all present at Randolph. For years, the School has included us in our grandchildren’s learning experiences, allowing us to see first-hand how impactful it is to be part of a school community that values a well-rounded and nurturing approach to each child’s development.
Generosity – as a collaboration of money, time, and talent –works! Philanthropy enlarges the School’s capacity for even greater programs and services to educate young people. We know that learning takes place both in the classroom and beyond, through participation in the arts, athletics, and exposure to different people, places, and cultures. We can accomplish so much when we work together to enrich the educational experience.
Giving helps students to see our belief in their future, understand how we’re investing in them, and have a great example of philanthropy to follow as they move into adulthood. It’s our hope that when our students reflect on their own education, they can clearly see how important they were through our generosity and be motivated to give too. We must look beyond “the now” and prepare to leave a legacy for Randolph School beyond our lifetime.

Becoming an educator at Randolph and having four children attend the School has totally changed our family’s trajectory. Randolph is not just simply a school to us; it is our second home. Whether it’s in class during the day or after school at music and theater events, art exhibits, or sporting events, Randolph is truly a community and a place of belonging in which our children have grown in knowledge, confidence, and character. It is a place where I, personally, have felt supported and appreciated far beyond expectations.
What makes Randolph special is the integration of the three educational pillars of academics, athletics, and the arts that’s woven into each student’s experience. Our approach to teaching and learning allows students to find a place in our program where they can flourish and contribute in meaningful ways. Experiential learning is another essential component in each student’s journey. Immigration simulations and field trips to Williamsburg, Space Camp, and Tremont are some of the many examples that bring their learning to life and give our students lasting memories, as well as connections with each other.
Without a doubt, the generosity of our families is the driver of these kinds of experiences that happen both on and off campus. Giving to the Randolph Fund is an investment that pushes our programs from ordinary to extraordinary. Years ago, I served on the approval board for the Randolph Fund. It was an amazing opportunity to see how the Randolph community comes together to support our faculty and their incredible ideas to impact students. UNDER THE CHRISTMAS TREE
For 38 years, Under the Christmas Tree has been Randolph School’s signature fundraising event. It raises funds for our Tailored Tuition Program and provides an opportunity for the Randolph Community to engage with one another in support of our school. In 2022, the three-day holiday shopping market featured vendors from across the southeastern United States, along with special events like Mimosas at the Market, Storytime with Santa, and Elf University. Greengate School celebrated its 20th anniversary at the annual fundraising gala, Spring Swing. From its early days to the present, Greengate has transformed the lives of children with dyslexia through education and advocacy. Greengate School at Randolph is the state’s only dyslexia instructional program accredited by the Orton Gillingham Academy. Greengate believes that every child should have the opportunity to learn regardless of a family’s financial situation. WAYS TO GIVE ENDOWMENT
Support Randolph’s community of learners in perpetuity by giving to the Endowment. Most commonly, donors make a planned gift to Randolph or open a life insurance policy.
MAJOR GIFTS
Major gifts to Randolph are most commonly associated with improving our built environment. From campus updating to new spaces that improve the student experience, major gifts are essential for the growth and renewal of our environment.
ANNUAL GIVING
The foundation of our philanthropic programming. As a non-profit, it is essential that we generate a healthy annual giving program to the Randolph Fund, so that our current programs are strong and healthy. Tuition alone does not pay for the Randolph experience. Annual giving is critical to our success.
NAMING OPPORTUNITIES
We are eager to highlight the private support that it takes to make a school like Randolph financially healthy. Supportive families and supportive companies can leave a legacy at Randolph by naming many of our un-named spaces. With opportunities from a variety of giving levels, we would like to discuss ways to show your support and commitment of Randolph.
VOLUNTEER
Randolph’s greatest asset is people, and as members of the Randolph Community Network, you play an active role in strengthening our community. There are numerous opportunities to become involved, in the classroom, at an athletic event, play or musical, Under the Christmas Tree, or Spring Swing. Because campus is always buzzing with activities, our students benefit from volunteerism during the school day, after school, in the evenings, and on weekends; volunteers are always needed! When you volunteer at Randolph, everyone benefits – students, faculty, and you!
