The Report on Philanthropy is published yearly by the Advancement Office of Randolph School and is distributed free of charge to alumni, faculty, families, and friends of the School. This report reflects gifts made to Randolph from July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022. Every effort has been made to avoid errors and omissions. HEAD OF SCHOOL MESSAGE
Of all the unexpected changes we’ve seen over the past two years, one of the most incredible has been an increase in support and generosity from our community. This past year’s Randolph Fund Campaign saw a record level of participation from our faculty and staff, as well as our families, reaching an overall participation level of 99% and 78% respectively. Additionally, many people committed to increasing the size of their gift to the campaign, helping us both to realize a matching gift and reach our overall goal for the campaign within only four weeks!
Our school community is as strong as ever. From the generous financial and volunteer support to robust admissions with growing wait lists, our future is bright. Over the past year, we have been engaged in a strategic planning process to build on the momentum we are experiencing and to shape our future. We sought feedback from our community through interviews, focus groups, and surveys and have shared this information. Several themes emerged. First, families choose Randolph for the superior academic experience and the strength of support offered to students, parents, and guardians.
Additionally, families value our well-rounded curriculum that exposes students to innovative ideas, provides meaningful opportunities in both the arts and athletics, recognizes the importance of STEM-related studies, and nurtures each student as an individual. As part of the research process, we identified a need for additional, high-quality prekindergarten options in the Huntsville community. Seeing how this need aligns with the Randolph mission and what we do best – educating young people – we embarked on an expansion to our K-12 learning experience and welcomed the first prekindergarten class. More positive change and growth is on the horizon for Randolph School. We have already begun a campus master planning process to identify our current and future needs. As we look ahead, I’m personally excited about the opportunities that exist for us to continue to transform our school to provide unparalleled learning experiences for our students as we prepare them for lives of significance. Your annual gifts to Randolph School help ensure that students are prepared. Parents and guardians (current and past), alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends made gifts to the School of nearly $1,000,000 throughout the 2021-2022 school year.
The Randolph Fund raised $692,326 this year and is the main source of fundraising for the School, providing support for the day-in and day-out work of our students and faculty. The Fund enables us to meet the needs of teacher classroom requests, provide ongoing curriculum reviews and updates, enhance advisory and social-emotional programs, and support continued faculty education.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Independent Governance
As an independent school, Randolph is governed by a Board of Trustees whose members serve the School on a voluntary basis. The Board is responsible for the Head of School, and its primary work is long-term and strategic. The Head of School, in partnership with school administration, is responsible for the day-to-day operation and management. The Board follows the Principles of Good Practice published by NAIS, the National Association of Independent Schools, of which Randolph is a member.

Our mission is to prepare graduates for an ever-changing world. Creating and fostering an environment that allows our institution to realize success, both immediate and long-term, is the most valuable aspect of serving on the Board of Trustees. Randolph helps students academically, psychologically, and socially through a stable, open, and inspiring community. As we embark on the Randolph Strategic Plan, it will guide us in our efforts to enhance the Randolph educational experience in the next few years. It’s important for our students to be exposed to and experience meaningful interactions with others who think or view the world differently. This is essential to becoming an independent thinker, as well as developing empathy.
My wife, Aruna, graduated from Randolph and both of our kids started in kindergarten. We believe in the independent school experience offered at Randolph and want our children to be kind to others, critical thinkers, and multidimensional. Cultivating an environment that allows for this kind of student development requires constant attention. Just like our children need nurturing, our school needs nurturing to develop programs that promote excellence in a collective way. Donating to the Randolph Fund is our way of helping ensure that the unique Randolph experiences that students benefit from today will exist for students in the years to come. I am amazed by how much time and energy people give to Randolph. We all give in different ways – through work, volunteerism, or financial donations. It’s because we share the same goal - we want the best for the School and future generations. We won’t settle for less. That positive impact is inspiring.
TORCH SOCIETY
The Randolph School Torch Society recognizes the generosity of those who have chosen to establish planned gifts to the School. Gifts from Torch Society members made through bequests, trusts, or other estate gifts, ensure the continued endowment growth and development of Randolph from one generation to the next. We honor and thank these committed donors by extending them membership in the Torch Society.
Upon our founding, community leaders in Huntsville had a vision for an independent school: a community of learners comprised of the very best educators serving students willing and able to do good work. Today, Randolph stands as North Alabama’s only PK-12 independent college preparatory school. Through careful planning and fiscal prudence, Randolph has achieved institutional strength in partnership with alumni, parents, faculty, and supporters of the School. As a result, Randolph has established a growing endowment which ensures continued strength and vitality for generations to come.

Randolph embarked on the development of the next strategic plan in the fall of 2021. Through interviews, surveys, focus groups, and the formation of a committee, the School sought to include the perspectives of as many constituents as possible. In May of 2022, the Board of Trustees approved the strategic plan that will shape the School’s work in the coming years.

As an alumna, and now parent, I have a unique perspective of Randolph’s evolution over more than three decades. My 1997 Senior class was the first to walk the halls of the current Middle School building. Fast-forward 22 years, my youngest brother graduated on the Garth campus, which didn’t exist when I was a student. I’ve seen the impact of generational giving and our family’s goal, like many others who came before us, is to make Randolph the best it can be. We invest, whether monetarily, or through volunteerism, because we believe everyone benefits from feeling supported.
Rob and I believe that one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the ability to believe they can achieve whatever they put their minds to. By giving to the Randolph Fund and special projects, we can better equip faculty and give students the ability to dream bigger and broaden their exposure to people, places, and ideas that will shape who they become. Randolph has proven to be more than a place of academic excellence - it is a community that strives to know one another, support one another, and ensure that our children are seen and known as they navigate an ever-changing world.
When our family returned to Huntsville, I was eager to give back to the school that gave me so much. I have never known Randolph to be a place where good is good enough; we are always looking for opportunities to be a stronger institution. For us, giving to Randolph equates to giving to the future of our children and every student and family in this community.
LEGACY GIVING
Randolph encourages the establishment of endowed funds to support the mission of the School. Endowed funds may be established to support scholarships, faculty salaries, professional development, or specific programs. The principal of the endowed funds remains invested and untouched in perpetuity; a percentage of the invested income being used to support the School each year. Many donors choose to honor or memorialize a family member, friend, or faculty member through the naming of endowed funds.

Established in 2015, the Edward E. The Hughes-Monaghan Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established in 2003 by Mary Shepard and Cutter Hughes in honor of their family. The Fund provides tuition credit to students from historically underrepresented populations. This scholarship can be used to supplement a 75% financial aid scholarship, covering up to no more than 95% of the total tuition.

The Rupa Kakani Scholarship Award
Rupa Kakani ’88’s untimely death while on a school-sponsored trip with her class is recognized each year at graduation ceremonies with this fund that awards a cash gift to a graduating senior. The
recipient is selected by the School and is honored with a citation that reads in part: “To affect the quality of the day is the highest of arts and there are students who, through their wit, their smiles, their intellect, and their amiability, affect the quality of the daily routine at Randolph School.”

The Lyle Alumni Award
The Lyle Alumni Award for Enthusiasm originated in 1976. In 1988 the fund was restructured to annually award a tuition credit to a male and female Randolph student

The Anthony J. Lynch Award
This fund is “presented annually to one member of the faculty or administration who consistently demonstrates the characteristics epitomized by Commander Anthony J. Lynch – dedication, leadership, character and the willingness to give consistently that extra effort above and beyond what is expected.” A second award of annual tuition credit that will pay all or part of tuition and fees is presented to a student who is a U.S. citizen. The student must demonstrate the qualities of deep concern for others, truth, honesty and love for country.

The Matthew Pettis Naylor Memorial Scholarship Award
This award, a tuition credit, is presented to a rising junior who best exemplifies certain qualities of Matthew Naylor, a member of the Class of 2002, who died in an automobile accident on June 7, 2000. A Christian and a sportsman, Matthew engaged himself fully in the world around him. He loved his family, cherished his friends, and respected his teachers. The recipient of the award demonstrates Matthew’s enthusiasm, individuality, confidence and conscientiousness. Like Matthew, he or she enjoys learning, shows a special interest in literature and history, consistently performs to the best of his or her ability, and encourages excellence in others.

The Jim Niedergeses Award
Jim Niedergeses was a member of the Class of 1984. His life ended tragically, the result of an automobile accident. The Niedergeses family established this award in 1987 to honor his memory and to “recognize a student who exemplifies the attitude and effort of striving to go further than he or she has ever done before.” The recipient is selected by the Health and Physical Education Department Chair each year.

Sapra Family Scholarship Fund
This Fund was established in 2020 to provide tuition coverage for students with dyslexia from historically underrepresented backgrounds to attend Greengate School’s summer camp experience. Without the Sapra Scholarship, recipients would not otherwise be able to attend the summer camp program.

The Trey Wilbourn Memorial Scholarship
Capt. James N. Wilbourn, III, USMC (“Trey”) was a member of the Randolph class of 1980 and an excellent athlete. His outstanding military career culminated in his assignment as a pilot. In 1991, his Harrier jet was shot down in central Kuwait, ending the life of this true patriot. Trey was the first Alabamian to lose his life in the Gulf War. The Wilbourn family created a scholarship in his memory that is awarded annually to a rising junior or senior who has at least a 3.0 grade point average and has participated in at least two sports at Randolph.

Since moving to Huntsville in 2012, Randolph was the first place that felt like home. While substitute teaching and coaching soccer, I met many teachers, staff members, and families who consistently went above and beyond for one another. The culture of the School, the learning environment, and the concern for character and moral development profoundly stood out as strengths of a Randolph education. Randolph has cultivated a community of caring, motivated, and exceptional learners.
When our oldest child started Kindergarten in 2019, COVID-19 changed the world we live in. Her Kindergarten year was one we will never forget; not because of fear, but because of the strength we found in the Randolph community. The consistent, nurturing environment continued even when we couldn’t be together. Teachers taught on new platforms with grace and patience. Although each following year has had its challenges, Randolph has continued to impress us with quick responses to an ever-changing climate while continuing to promote high standards of academic excellence and a strong sense of community.
Experiencing Kindergarten last year with our son has been a gift. Reading in the library weekly, being welcomed and encouraged to help with bulletin boards, field trips, and watching the Senior Buddy relationship grow has demonstrated how special Randolph is. Randolph is family. When you find your family, you cherish it, nurture it, and help it grow. By giving to the Randolph Fund, we are directly impacting future generations and deepening meaningful and lifelong relationships while fostering a community of excellence.

Randolph goes above and beyond to support its students. Two beautiful campuses, Interim trips that give students the chance to travel the world, and facilities like the Shields-Jones Athletic Complex and Thurber Arts Center illustrate the generosity of our school community. As a student, I played in the first Varsity Boys Basketball game at the “new” gym on Garth. I remember that first game, not because it was particularly interesting or important to our season, but because of the excitement about the beautiful new campus, which was the result of a shared commitment to philanthropy.
The Randolph community not only rallies behind students, faculty and staff, and community members during times of great need, but also celebrates the successes of faculty, students, and community members. I get excited when I see signing days happening in the athletics facility, as I remember how big that moment was for me. I’m proud of what students are accomplishing and am grateful to be ‘in-the-know’ about their endeavors.
When I started my company, The Scribes, I once again felt the support of the Randolph Community. While the School relies on philanthropic support, my entrepreneurial experience demonstrated to me that, as a school, Randolph wants to be involved in a student’s success long after they leave campus. I encourage my fellow alums and community members to visit campus or attend an alumni event in the city they call home. Staying engaged reminds me of the close bonds that are developed at Randolph, strengthens my sense of pride, and encourages me to give back.

Randolph is a special place to go to school and I am honored to call myself an alumna! Teachers go above and beyond for their students, serving as role models and helping to advocate, guide, and lead the students in every aspect of life. I will cherish the relationships and memorable times spent at the state dive meets in Auburn with my friends, traveling with the dance team on the bus to football games, and cheering on the Raiders.
In March of 2020, I was a sophomore and there was so much uncertainty about school and life. What remained constant was our teachers and advisors checking on us and teaching us. For that, I am forever grateful. Seeing how hard my teachers were working influenced me to give that same effort to my school and the people around me. I was honored to be on the Varsity Dance and Dive Teams, and to join the National Art Honor Society, National Honor Society, and to serve as the SGA President during my Senior year. With the help of my teachers, sponsors, and administrators, I was challenged and supported to grow as a student leader.
As I move to the next stage of life as a college student, these experiences will continue to guide me. Although we still live in uncertain times, supporting Randolph will help it to remain a safe, fun, and amazing environment where students have the opportunity to learn, serve the community, and build friendships that will last a lifetime.

Randolph is an exceptional academic institution, which continuously educates students who achieve academic success and high morality. Alumni become successful and well-respected members of their community, whether it be in the medical or legal fields, or as entrepreneurs, teachers, engineers; the list could go on. During my time at Randolph, I made lifelong friends, not only with students, but also with faculty members. It’s been a great experience to watch our children build relationships with many of the same teachers.
Being involved at Randolph has had a direct impact on our lives, as well as the lives of our children and their fellow students. Henri has been a Lower School teacher for more than nine years. Prior to that, she served as a parent volunteer, representing the Lower School, and assisting with Under the Christmas Tree and Randolph Summer Programs. The professional development opportunities and being able to teach the whole child at Randolph, academically, socially, and emotionally, has allowed her to grow as an educator. Often, former students visit her classroom and share their many accomplishments since being her student.
Our children are our greatest blessings. We believe that giving to the Randolph Fund helps distinguish the Randolph experience. Donations to the Randolph Fund bolster the learning experience and allow students access to technology, educational opportunities on and off campus, and incredible fine arts and athletic facilities. We firmly believe that there is no greater investment than investing in your children’s education. The education and experiences at Randolph have provided a solid foundation for our children’s entire lives.

As teachers, we have the privilege of taking an incredible journey with our students. Teaching, by nature, inspires change in individuals. Often, we assume that the growth occurs only in the students, however, students also inspire growth in their teachers. It is part of the beauty of the journey of education that we take together.
The experiences I value most as a teacher center around the wonderful community we have at Randolph. Our faculty excel at building relationships with their students. While unique lessons and eye-opening experiences occur each day in our halls, students are much more likely to remember the encouraging smiles they received while tackling a challenging problem. These experiences build over time into common memories and classroom folklore to be treasured for years.
The Randolph Fund supports the dedicated work of our teachers. Gifts allow teachers to acquire laboratory supplies, new equipment, and technology that broaden and deepen the learning experience and encourage student exploration and independence. The funds directly benefit our students, support the creativity of our faculty, and open the possibilities for learning experiences beyond the classroom. I often have the joy of observing other science classrooms and seeing the results of the generosity of our donors. Watching students’ reactions of awe as they see microscopic details for the first time or witnessing students’ enthusiasm as the seeds they planted begin to germinate under our new grow lights reminds me of the impact our gifts have and inspires me to continue giving.

UNDER THE CHRISTMAS TREE
For 37 years, Under the Christmas Tree has been Randolph School’s signature fundraising event. It raises funds for our Tailored Tuition Program and provides an opportunity for the Randolph Community to engage with one another in support of our school. In 2021, the three-day holiday shopping market returned with vendors from across the southeastern United States, along with special events like Gingerbread Dreams, Storytime with Santa, Holiday Art with Mrs. Sweet, and Mimosas at the Market. Thanks to our committee, sponsors, and volunteers, we were able to add $79,000 in support of Randolph’s Tailored Tuition Program.

SPRING SWING
The annual fundraising gala, Spring Swing, benefitting Greengate School at Randolph, celebrates the education and advocacy of children with dyslexia. Greengate School at Randolph is the state’s only dyslexia instructional program accredited by the Orton-Gillingham Academy. Greengate believes that every child should have the opportunity to learn regardless of a family’s financial situation. All Spring Swing proceeds, $91,000, support tuition assistance and teacher training. Thank you to Co-Chairs Jess Cowan and Elizabeth Jones and all of the event sponsors, volunteers, and supporters. WAYS TO GIVE ENDOWMENT
Support Randolph’s community of learners in perpetuity by giving to the Endowment. Most commonly, donors make a planned gift to Randolph or open a life insurance policy.
ANNUAL GIVING
The foundation of our philanthropic programming. As a non-profit, it is essential that we generate a healthy annual giving program to the Randolph Fund, so that our current programs are strong and healthy. Tuition alone does not pay for the Randolph experience. Annual giving is critical to our success.
MAJOR GIFTS
Major gifts to Randolph are most commonly associated with improving our built environment. From campus updating to new spaces that improve the student experience, major gifts are essential for the growth and renewal of our environment.
NAMING OPPORTUNITIES
We are eager to highlight the private support that it takes to make a school like Randolph financially healthy. Supportive families and supportive companies can leave a legacy at Randolph by naming many of our un-named spaces. With opportunities from a variety of giving levels, we would like to discuss ways to show your support and commitment of Randolph.
VOLUNTEER
Randolph’s greatest asset is people, and as members of the Randolph Community Network, you play an active role in strengthening our community. There are numerous opportunities to become involved, in the classroom, at an athletic event, play or musical, Under the Christmas Tree, or Spring Swing. Because campus is always buzzing with activities, our students benefit from volunteerism during the school day, after school, in the evenings, and on weekends; volunteers are always needed! When you volunteer at Randolph, everyone benefits – students, faculty, and you!
