A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM

Like many things in life, community is something that is often taken for granted until it is absent. A year ago, this past spring, our community and those across the globe were forced to retreat in the face of the pandemic. The smiling faces we once enjoyed in-person were known only through a screen. When the fall of 2020 arrived, we were thankful to once again welcome students to campus in person, even if it involved wearing masks and having barriers strategically placed around classrooms and buildings on both campuses. As the school year began, I shared with the faculty my hope that the second semester would look different than the first and I was so grateful to have celebrated so many of our annual traditions, including the Senior Prom, Closing Convocation, Baccalaureate, and Graduation.
All of these events, along with many others, were once again observed in person as each emphasized the importance of community. I am overwhelmingly proud of our school community. When we needed each other most, our community responded with kindness and generosity. This year’s Report on Philanthropy reinforces the value that each of you places on community. While it’s difficult
to truly quantify the difference your generous support makes in the lives of our students, we know that this year it allowed us to overcome the challenges of the pandemic together.
We look ahead to the coming year with a renewed excitement for and a commitment to community. Personally, I look forward to meeting many of you and the opportunities for us to build relationships with one another. Picnics, parties, and so many other events are on the horizon. I know our families are excited to connect with each other and as a community. While many families have expressed their gratitude for the fine work of
our faculty and staff during the 2020 – 21 school year, I’d like to share our gratitude to each of you. Thank you for living our mission of Seeking Truth, Building Character, and Nurturing All. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our students.
Sincerely,

Adam Dubé Head of School

Head of School Message

Board of Trustees Torch Society

Your annual gifts to Randolph School help ensure that students are prepared. Parents (current and past), alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends made gifts to the School of nearly $1,000,000 throughout the 2020-2021 school year.
The Randolph Fund raised $626,660 this year and is the main source of fundraising for the School, providing support for the day-in and day-out work of our students and faculty. The Fund enables us to meet the needs of teacher classroom requests, provide ongoing curriculum review and updates, enhance advisory and social-emotional programs, offer Randolph Connect and support continued faculty education.
Our thanks to all who have made giving to the School a priority in 2020-2021. Randolph is able to do so much more for students thanks to your leadership and investment.

Independent Governance
As an independent school, Randolph is governed by a Board of Trustees whose members serve the School on a voluntary basis. The Board is responsible for the Head of School, and its primary work is long-term and strategic. The Head of School, in partnership with school administration, is responsible for the day-to-day operation and management. The Board follows the Principles of Good Practice published by NAIS, the National Association of Independent Schools, of which Randolph is a member.
Main Responsibilities
• Assuring the relevance and fulfillment of the School’s mission
• Hiring, supporting, and evaluating the Head of School
• Securing the financial sustainability of the School

TORCH SOCIETY
The Randolph School Torch Society recognizes the generosity of those who have chosen to establish planned gifts to the School. Gifts from Torch Society members made through bequests, trusts, or other estate gifts, ensure the continued endowment growth and development of Randolph from one generation to the next. We honor and thank these committed donors by extending them membership in the Torch Society.
Upon our founding, community leaders in Huntsville had a vision for an independent school: a community of learners comprised of the very best educators serving students willing and able to do good work. Today, Randolph stands as North Alabama’s only K-12 independent college preparatory school. Through careful planning and fiscal prudence, Randolph has achieved institutional strength in partnership with alumni, parents, faculty, and supporters of the School. As a result, Randolph has established a growing endowment which ensures continued strength and vitality for generations to come.

Melissa Dodgen

Trustees are the keepers of Randolph School’s mission, charged with upholding the key pillars of “Seeking Truth, Building Character, and Nurturing All.” Being on the Board of Trustees gives me a unique vantage point to see how carefully every decision is considered with the constant goal of ensuring that students are strengthened in their ability to think critically, supported in their individual growth, and given quality, hands-on, and innovative learning opportunities in the classroom and beyond. Yet, making these choices is tough and will not resonate with everyone in our school community. We aim to leave our personal agendas at the door and work with the Head of School to ensure that the student experience reflects our mission in all academic, arts, and athletic activities. Our hearts are in this work.
For our family, giving to the Randolph Fund is a lifetime investment and gesture of thanks to the people who help our children be the best version of themselves. Our teachers are constantly coming up with new ideas and we want them to have the resources to elevate our educational experience. As we emerge from a year full of unexpected costs and challenges, the future looks bright. Navigating those obstacles inspired a wealth of ideas. With guidance from our faculty, staff, and coaches, Randolph students develop character, build confidence, learn to manage their weaknesses, and lean into their strengths. They learn that no matter how daunting the task, they can be successful. As a parent, I can’t ask for anything more. As a school, there is no better legacy.

Being involved with the school and the families at Randolph has changed our lives. While we experienced school differently as kids, each of us now share in the realization and appreciation that a Randolph education provides students with excellent academic preparation for college through an expansive curriculum and accelerated pace of learning, as well as an environment to develop as individuals. Randolph has fostered such a tremendous interest in nature and science in our daughter. We saw and seized the opportunity to improve upon the School’s ability to continue providing this important academic space for students. It’s our hope that the Town Outdoor Science Center promotes even greater interest in science amongst the younger students and increases the likelihood of yet another Randolph student going on to do big things in science.
Every gift to the Randolph Fund is an investment in every child. Randolph faculty, staff, and families are very giving of their time, talent, or treasure, and that encourages our support. Philanthropy is entirely a learned behavior and is distinguishable from generosity. Philanthropy tends more towards a cause and often repeats itself in performance and commitment. Generosity, while at the root of philanthropy, is more kindness in funding. We give to demonstrate the importance of giving to institutions that do good and that you believe in. We’re grateful that our daughter recognizes that Randolph isn’t just a place she has to go to five days a week; she respects the School as an institution, and we all embrace Randolph as part of our family.

Linda Bryant
Retiring as the Assistant Head of School for Finance and Operations after 30 years of service
Linda Bryant has served as a talented and devoted leader since 1991, and her student-centered approach to managing the business operations of the School is unique and highly valued by the Randolph community. In her thirty years of service, Mrs. Bryant has been a leader in campus expansions, including additions to the Drake campus and the purchase of the Garth campus land and $27.5 million dollar Upper School campus. During her tenure, the operating budget of the school has increased from $2.5 to $18 million dollars, the endowment has grown from $220,000 to $25 million dollars, and the number of school employees has quadrupled. She has carefully managed the School’s finances and will leave our school in a strong financial position. Through her work, Mrs. Bryant has ensured that our school has used its resources to further our mission and help each student reach their potential. Though we will miss Mrs. Bryant, we celebrate with her the opportunity to enjoy a well-deserved retirement.

“Hiring Linda Bryant was my most vital hire when I became Head of Randolph in 1991. As our Business Officer, Linda was simply extraordinary putting into place all of the financial and structural processes that changed the trajectory of the School. Linda led us through a quagmire of challenges from literally figuring out a way to purchase the land that the School was built on so we could expand, overseeing the establishment of an endowment, overseeing the School’s first major facilities expansion in two decades, and establishing a rigorous budgeting process. She leaves a legacy of excellence that will serve generations of Randolph students.”
George Edwards, Former Head of Randolph School
“Year after year, I’ve watched Linda meet challenges with the mindset of what’s best for the students, the teachers, and the School. She managed the bottom line carefully and conservatively, but to her it has never been about the bottom line. The School’s culture, its people, and its future have always been first and foremost in Linda’s priorities, and it drives everything she does. She is a caring friend, leader, colleague, and a fierce advocate for the things she holds dear.”
Jane Daniel, Assistant to the Head of School for Strategic Initiatives
“Linda’s unwavering dedication to Randolph School has benefited students, parents, and teachers for many years. In the thirty years, Linda and I have worked together I have never heard anything but compliments and accolades regarding her work and support of the School.”
Frederick M. Lanier ’71, Former Trustee
“Linda Bryant leaves a legacy as one of the School’s greatest champions and a defender of the program and its people. She once described herself as the “Chief Worrier,” but when the words came out of her mouth, I could only think of the words “Chief Warrior.”
Although it may appear to some that her work has been tangential to the success of our School, the truth is that her direct influence with, and care of, our resources have allowed our students and faculty to thrive in this special environment.”
Adam Bernick, Director of Institutional Advancement
LEGACY GIVING
Randolph encourages the establishment of endowed funds to support the mission of the School. Endowed funds may be established to support scholarships, faculty salaries and professional development or specific programs. The principal of the endowed funds remains invested and untouched in perpetuity; a percentage of the invested income being used to support the School each year. Many donors choose to honor or memorialize a family member, friend or faculty member through the naming of endowed funds.

For a child with a learning difference, the biggest gift that can be given is confidence. Consistent access to quality academic instruction, specialized learning tools, and educational resources are crucial in that development, which led to the establishment of The Sapra Scholarship Program for dyslexic children from underrepresented families. The challenge of understanding and treating dyslexia is further compounded by the financial burden and a lack of access to adequate education for this unique learning difference. Greengate School at Randolph is nationally accredited by the Orton-Gillingham Academy, one of only a few schools of its kind in the country.
Education has been a cornerstone for our family’s good fortune. In the 1960s, I immigrated to the United States to study at Kansas State University. That opportunity resulted in U.S. citizenship and 25 years of teaching at Alabama A&M University, reaching Emeritus status. Recognizing the importance of education throughout my personal life and career, Pushpa and I were determined to provide our sons with the best education. We were fortunate to receive that at Randolph. The experience created a solid foundation for them to pursue advanced degrees and become successful businessmen, husbands, fathers, and citizens. One of the most important jobs that parents have when it comes to raising children is ensuring that they receive a good education. Through The Sapra Scholarship Program, we hope to provide this same foundation for other families who are seeking a transformative educational experience that will set up their children for much success in their lives, and in turn their children’s children.

Randolph Alumni Association, 2021-22 President
The significance of volunteerism to the Randolph educational experience is that it offers a two-way connection for understanding and growth. Volunteering is an opportunity for older alumni, faculty, and staff to invest in and learn from current students, as we light the path for those behind us. By giving our time to intentionally come together and nurture growth, we can create lasting, positive impacts on future generations of students, parents, and educators. Time is such a valuable commodity. When someone invests their time in making sure you grow in a certain area, it feels right to pass on that torch and foster someone else in the same manner.
My time at Randolph provided me with lifelong friends and colleagues who have supported and inspired me. Likewise, there are so many faculty, staff, and coaches who invested their time in me and my success both in and out of the classroom, preparing me to approach new challenges with open arms and an open mind. My undergraduate mentor, General Charles C. Krulak, would often speak about the importance of cultivating and living lives of significance – a life that positively impacts as many people as possible; a selfless life that leaves a mark impossible to erase. Education is a key that unlocks many doors. Help unlock a door and pour into something that is bigger than all of us – the future. Whether it be serving as a mentor, volunteering on a committee, or supporting the School financially, these things provide opportunities for curious students to find their passions, flourish, and gain a fuller understanding of themselves, each other, and the world.

Student Government Association, 2020-21 President
Being a member of the Randolph community means something much bigger than simply going to school. Whether it be joining the dance team, performing with Theatre Randolph, serving on the Honor Council, learning about the stock market in the investment club, or any other combination of arts, athletics, and student leadership organizations, the eagerness students have to get involved is amazing and fosters a strong and supportive environment that everyone benefits from. In my opinion, this strong student participation is integral to the Randolph educational experience, and is one of the School’s greatest features. My time in student government, which began as a sophomore representative, allowed me to witness incredible feats of leadership and teamwork between faculty sponsors and student leaders on projects like pep rallies, dances, and anniversary events. Seeing how these students took charge and utilized their resources was inspiring and helped prepare me for my term as SGA President. Being involved in these organizations not only teaches you to lead, but also how to think critically, work collaboratively, and observe and learn from your peers.
In addition to providing me with an education, being a part of the Randolph community has helped my family create meaningful connections and cultivate new friendships. I would encourage everyone who is able, to give to the Randolph Fund and allow other students to have the same opportunities that I, and so many of my peers, have been given. It is our duty to help uplift and enrich the lives of the people who walk alongside us and support us every single day.

GRANDPARENT GIVING
Giving to the Randolph Fund is the perfect opportunity for grandparents to show their support. Thank you to all our Randolph Grandparents! Together we make a difference!

Retired as the Head of Lower School with 36 years of service
Cindy Shaw served Randolph School and our students for nearly 36 years, during which time she has had the opportunity to impact the lives of thousands of students. Mrs. Shaw began her Randolph career in 1985 as a 3rd grade teacher covering a maternity leave, and she eventually became a full-time teacher. In 2001, Mrs. Shaw was named the Head of the Lower Elementary Division, leading students and faculty in grades K-3, with a total enrollment of 162 students. In 2009, she became Head of the Lower School for grades K-4, and Lower School enrollment has grown to 236 students under her leadership. Mrs. Shaw’s care for our students is deep and genuine, and she has consistently provided leadership by supporting our Lower School faculty, while also transforming the curriculum through several important initiatives. Mrs. Shaw is a highly valued and trusted leader, and we are so grateful for the difference she has made at Randolph.
Cindy Shaw

“Cindy is an outstanding educational leader that has always provided love, guidance, and wisdom to every child she meets. Her warm smile and enthusiasm have brightened our campus for more than 35 years.”
Jerry Beckman, Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs
“I had the opportunity to work with Cindy Shaw for nine years. She was not only a fearless leader, but also the definition of a true nurturer. Her door was always open to show her love and support for teachers and students alike.”
Henri Helstowski, Randolph Lower School Teacher
“I have the fondest memories of my third grade year at Randolph and I attribute it solely to my kind, loving, and gentle-hearted teacher, Mrs. Shaw. Not only was she my teacher, but she also taught my two older sisters. Fast forward 30 years, my children attended Randolph’s Lower School under Mrs. Shaw’s administration. I am so grateful they were able to experience an educational program under a woman who puts her heart and soul into encouraging each child she meets to grow into the best versions of themselves.”
Andrea Petroff ’01
“Cindy’s priority has always been the student. More than anyone I’ve ever worked with, she never stops reading, asking questions, and consulting with peers and subject matter experts in the educational field to best meet the needs of each child.”
Kim Simpson, Former Lower School Librarian

Nate Gee
Upper School English Teacher and Recipient of the Anthony J. Lynch Faculty Award
Randolph’s approach toward education is to embrace complexity. We teach our students that the world around them is a complex place, and we show them successful learning is equally complex. The Idea Path endorses the idea that learning is never a straight line, but instead a circuitous series of steps, often revisited, revised, and perfected. Randolph’s recent diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives have shown a willingness to have hard conversations, rethink perspectives, and then grow in a nurturing environment. I love that Randolph’s mission statement begins with “Seeking Truth” and does not imply “Finding Truth.” It is just as important to ask unanswerable questions as it is to always have the right answers. We help our students see the need to be patient, humble learners, and open-minded, authentic leaders. I trust that the path for me and my students will be circuitous, individualized, diverse, and always complex.
In the midst of the unease and chaos of 2020, giving to an institution like Randolph grounded me in values like “Seeking Truth, Building Character, and Nurturing All”. As I reflected on the nature of our work as educators, I recognized the amount of heart that goes in our jobs. I saw my fellow Upper School English teachers re-making curriculums and teaching techniques overnight from our basements and bedrooms. We anxiously Zoomed with each other, traded ideas, and furiously created online lessons to continue inspiring our students. Donating in each of their names to the Randolph Fund was my small way of expressing admiration for their dedication and service to the School.

UNDER THE CHRISTMAS TREE
For 36 years, Under the Christmas Tree has been Randolph School’s signature fundraising event. It raises funds for our Tailored Tuition Program and provides an opportunity for the Randolph Community to engage with one another in support of our school. In 2020, Randolph hosted Under the Christmas Tree: Pandemic Edition. Due to COVID-19, the traditional holiday market was replaced with multiple small fundraising efforts including a drive-in movie, art projects, and gingerbread houses. Thanks to our committee, sponsors, and volunteers, we were able to add $23,179 in support of Randolph’s Tailored Tuition Program.

SPRING SWING
Greengate School at Randolph is the state’s only dyslexia instructional program accredited by the Orton Gillingham Academy. Greengate believes that every child should have the opportunity to learn regardless of a family’s financial situation. In lieu of an in-person event, the school hosted a Spring Swing Campaign which raised $53,700 and sought to educate our community on how a moment of generosity can impact the lifetime of a child with dyslexia. Thank you to Campaign Chair Melissa Kronk and the following Spring Swing Campaign supporters.

From the outset of our journey, we realized quickly that volunteering would be a significant part of the Randolph experience. Starting in kindergarten, this community begins to realize the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” With simple acts, like reading to Kindergarteners, students may begin seeing that their classmates are extensions of families, and those families are an integral part of the school community – their village. Moreover, those families are supportive of the learning and growth of all Randolph students. This interconnectedness, no matter how small, leaves lasting impressions on everyone involved.
Volunteering exemplifies and underscores that sense of community that is foundational to the Randolph experience. The act takes the emphasis off you and ideally places energy on something worthwhile. It has given us the opportunity to meet fellow parents, administrators, and staff, learn about activities in the other grades, and understand how Randolph operates financially as an independent school. When our oldest child started in Kindergarten, we noted the absence of traditional fundraising efforts. Giving was made easier because it was a one-time effort, and the pledged amount could be fulfilled later. Likewise, volunteering at Randolph is easy to say yes to. It has always been a positive experience for us and the work that takes place prior to the arrival of the volunteers makes it evident that Randolph values the volunteer’s time. We feel fortunate to have witnessed the behind-the-scenes efforts toward ensuring that children at Randolph are safe, academically challenged, and socially nurtured.

WAYS
Endowment
Support Randolph’s community of learners in perpetuity by giving to the Endowment. Most commonly, donors make a planned gift to Randolph or open a life insurance policy.
Contact: Adam Bernick (256)799-6107
Annual Giving
The foundation of our philanthropic programming. As a non-profit, it is essential that we generate a healthy annual giving program to the Randolph Fund, so that our current programs are strong and healthy. Tuition alone does not pay for the Randolph experience. Annual giving is critical to our success.
Contact: Jill Gaunt (256)799-6106
Major Gifts
Major gifts to Randolph are most commonly associated with improving our built environment. From campus updating to new spaces that improve the student experience, major gifts are essential for the growth and renewal of our environment.

Naming Opportunities
We are eager to highlight the private support that it takes to make a school like Randolph financially healthy. Supportive families and supportive companies can leave a legacy at Randolph by naming many of our un-named spaces. With opportunities from a variety of giving levels, we would like to discuss ways to show your support and commitment of Randolph.

Volunteer
Randolph’s greatest asset is people, and as a member of the Randolph Community Network, you play an active role in strengthening our community. There are numerous opportunities to become involved, in the classroom through Randolph Connect, at an athletic event, play or musical, Under the Christmas Tree, or the Spring Swing. Because campus is always buzzing with activities, our students benefit from volunteerism during the school day, after school, in the evenings, and on weekends; volunteers are always needed! When you volunteer at Randolph, everyone benefits – students, faculty, and you!
