Randolph School provides a rigorous and well-rounded K-12 college preparatory education within a nurturing community. Through a commitment to excellence in academics, the arts, and athletics, the School’s program and its faculty demand diligence and discipline while encouraging creativity and discovery. Above all, the School emphasizes honor, integrity, and character so that all in partnership with Randolph are elevated and inspired to enrich their families, communities, the nation, and the world.
The Report on Philanthropy is published yearly by the Advancement Office of Randolph School and is distributed free of charge to alumni, faculty, families, and friends of the School. This report reflects gifts made to Randolph from July 1, 2019 trough June 30, 2020. Every effort has been made to avoid errors and omissions. A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear Randolph Community:
On the last day of school in May, which seems to have been a decade ago, both of my sons came downstairs wearing their Randolph t-shirts because they were so excited to be joining the Randolph School family. For me, this action perfectly captured what drew me to our school in the first place, this sense of shared community. Upon first learning of Randolph School over a year ago, until joining it on July 1st, I have witnessed our community coming together time and time again to demonstrate commitment to the long-term success of our school and our mission to seek truth, build character, and nurture all.
When faced with the challenge of transitioning to a fully online model of learning this past spring, our faculty did as they teach our students to do, leaning into discomfort and working together to solve a problem. From this collaboration and leadership, a robust learning experience was formed that not only challenged students academically, but allowed teachers to maintain the close, personal connections that have characterized our school for over 60 years.
Trustees, faculty, and staff have given countless hours since the close of the school year to plan for the safe arrival of students in the fall. Despite the monumental challenges to reinvent teaching and learning at Randolph and develop plans for multiple models of schooling, the constant refrain from all is, “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to create a safe and supportive environment for students, faculty, and staff.”
Our families have expressed this same sentiment, donating to our Raider Relief Fund which was established to support those Randolph families most adversely affected by the pandemic. This fund ensures the ability of families faced with significant financial struggles to remain at Randolph so that their child’s educational experience won’t be interrupted.
Alumni representing decades of Randolph graduates have reached out to the school to share their experiences relating to diversity and inclusion, urging ways we can grow and offering to dedicate their own time and resources to the process.
The greatness of our school does not rely upon the generosity and commitment of a single individual; it is the culmination of generations of individuals who have believed in the Randolph mission and steadfastly supported it through the years to ensure we continue to deliver the Randolph Difference.
As you read through the stories in this report, you will get to know individuals whose lives have been transformed by their experience at Randolph School. These transformations are made possible through the generosity and commitment of our donors, people who know that the investment they make in our school is an investment in our students. It is an investment in changing lives and equipping our students to be fearless leaders who change the lives of others. There is no investment with a greater impact.
I was drawn to Randolph School because of the community and commitment, and I hope you also are as encouraged and optimistic about the future of our school – even in a time of such great challenge for our country and our world. The past successes speak to the future and our school’s ability to continue to change lives, one student at a time.

Your annual gifts to Randolph School help ensure that students are prepared. Parents (current and past), alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends made gifts to the School of over $1,000,000 throughout the 2019-2020 school year.
The Randolph Fund raised $632,895 this year and is the main source of fundraising for the School, providing support for the day-in and day-out work of our students and faculty. The Fund enables us to meet the needs of teacher classroom requests, provide ongoing curriculum review and updates, enhance advisory and social-emotional programs, offer Randolph Connect and support continued faculty education.
Our thanks to all who have made giving to the School a priority in 2019-2020. Randolph is able to do so much more for students thanks to your leadership and investment.

Independent Governance
As an independent school, Randolph is governed by a Board of Trustees whose members serve the School on a voluntary basis. The Board is responsible for the Head of School, and its primary work is long-term and strategic. The Head of School, in partnership with school administration, is responsible for the day-to-day operation and management. The Board follows the Principles of Good Practice published by NAIS, the National Association of Independent Schools, of which Randolph is a member.

I am extremely grateful to have such a strong independent school in our community. Among the many attributes important to me and my family are the outstanding programs and facilities that allow our incredible faculty and staff to provide children with extraordinary opportunities to learn. When I attended Randolph, the entire school was on the Drake campus. Philanthropic giving played an enormous role in the construction of the Garth campus, which boasts an outstanding gymnasium, excellent theater, and state-of-the-art classroom space.
For me, the most important thing is that we establish and maintain a philosophy of investment in our school. Our collective investment in the programs, faculty, and facilities sustains the exceptional learning experience for students and ensures the school has the necessary resources for growth. An important element of philanthropic giving in my life has been tuition assistance, also known as Tailored Tuition. I was in Lower School when my parents divorced. My mother worked extremely hard to pay the tuition for my sister and me. Randolph worked to put that goal within her reach, utilizing unrestricted giving and gifts focused on financial support for families. Since our graduation, my mother has included Randolph every year in her ongoing community giving. I proudly continue that tradition with two children enrolled, and by making Randolph my largest community gift recipient each year. I’m glad to have the opportunity to help repay the investment Randolph made in me.

My time in the visual arts and theater really shaped who I am as a person and helped me find my voice. The first time I was on stage with a speaking role was transformative. I could try new things and even if they didn’t turn out the way I thought they would, I still had that opportunity to learn. I vividly remember being in Mrs. Reyes’ AP Art class working on a piece for my portfolio and getting frustrated. She explained that I was in the “middle school” phase - an awkward point, but you get through it. That ended up being one of the best pieces I’ve ever done and taught me perseverance.
The arts are a vital part of the Randolph experience and offer many wonderful opportunities for students to develop leadership skills. I achieved a dream of starting the National Arts Honor Society and served as the chapter’s founding president, with the extraordinary help of Mrs. Larose. One of my favorite memories is from the Peter Pan production in the spring of 2019. The other pirates and I were goofing off and dancing backstage. As I looked around at the crowd of people who came to watch our performance, I was very grateful and truly understood the impact of giving. Generous contributions of time and treasure made it all possible. In that moment, I vowed to support the arts at Randolph to allow other students to have the same opportunities I cherished.

Randolph inspires and instills a love of learning, intellectual curiosity, strength of character and self-confidence in its students. My experience on the Board of Trustees has given me a completely different perspective of Randolph than my time as a K-12 student, alumnus and parent. When current students present to the Board, I am always struck by their confidence, poise and depth of understanding on the subject being shared.
Another experience that really stands out for me happened two years ago at the annual Spring Swing event, shortly after my nephew was diagnosed with dyslexia. My brother and sister-in-law described his excitement when he realized that he would finally be able to read.
These experiences and stories shared by our students inspire me to give. Serving on the Board allows me the opportunity to give back to the school I love and to work with engaged and dedicated individuals who are willing to sacrifice a significant amount of their time because of their love of the school. In recent years, the Board has led initiatives such as the merger with Greengate School and the expansion of Tailored Tuition. Not long ago, we announced the formation of a committee focused on improving and sustaining a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion at Randolph. From the beginning of our 13 years at Randolph, what’s been important to us is knowing that when our son steps foot on the campus, he is safe, nurtured, challenged, and known. Equally important, is knowing that Randolph would provide him with the foundation for a love of learning, instill in him the confidence of self-advocacy, and encourage his educational pursuits and passion. Even in the midst of a pandemic, we have seen the support and care of teachers, coaches, staff and administrators. There is a community and sense of belonging for us, and especially our son, that will extend beyond our years at Randolph.
For us, the impact of the Randolph Fund is that it provides support to the very people that we entrust with our child. As parents, the decision to pursue a Randolph education is not made without deliberate consideration and sacrifice. We make this decision because we believe that education is a priority. The funds raised mean increased faculty development, capital improvements, and freedom to go beyond what’s required. What’s more important, however, is participation. Regardless of the dollar amount, when you give, you demonstrate that you support teachers, value what a Randolph education stands for, and are committed to the continued excellence of Randolph School.

The most decorated student-athlete in Randolph School history *
When I reflect on my experiences at Randolph, the people and memories are ones that I will carry with me through the rest of my life. The most impressionable aspect of my athletic involvement at Randolph was the strong community that surrounded me. Whether it was a softball game or a golf tournament, the support was always there for me as an individual and our teams. From well wishes in person, to recognition on public platforms, it made me feel so loved and gave me the confidence I needed to balance both academics and athletics. Throughout my four years at Randolph, all the teachers were more than understanding when my sports involvement impacted my attendance, assisted me when I needed it, and had my best interest at heart.
Playing for the Varsity Softball Team and being a captain for the Varsity Randolph Golf Team allowed me to meet amazing people, improve my leadership skills, and develop lifelong friendships. I was also proud to be a part of the Youth Leadership Council grant program, which helps students host fundraisers, events, and bring awareness to certain organizations and subject matters of importance. My family’s involvement over the years enhanced our connection to Randolph even more. My dad was a coach and my mom served as an RCN Parent Ambassador for two years. We’re living in a time of both great need and generosity. To that, I would say that each of us should consider if we are able to give to the Randolph Fund and do so to uplift everyone in our school community.

ENDOWED FUNDS
Randolph encourages the establishment of endowed funds to support the mission of the School. Endowed funds may be established to support scholarships, faculty salaries and professional development or specific programs. The principal of the endowed funds remains invested and untouched in perpetuity; a percentage of the invested income being used to support the School each year. Many donors choose to honor or memorialize a family member, friend or faculty member through the naming of endowed funds.

In 1981, Randolph School received its first grant from the Ford Foundation, recognized nationally for educational philanthropy. This matching grant provides annual income to supplement need-based tuition credits in the Upper School.

Established in 2015, the Edward E. Ford Tuition Assistance Endowment helps ensure that tuition is not a barrier to qualified students who will enhance the educational experience of the whole Randolph community. Grisham Faculty Enrichment Endowment
Betty and Charles Grisham, well known for their support of the arts and education, established this endowment in 1995 for teacher development and graduate education, a testament to their love for Randolph School, as former parents and grandparents.

The Rupa Kakani Scholarship Award
Rupa Kakani ’88’s untimely death while on a school-sponsored trip with her class is recognized each year at graduation ceremonies with this fund that awards a cash gift to a graduating senior. The recipient is selected by the School and is honored with a citation that reads in part: “To affect the quality of the day is the highest of arts and there are students who, through their wit, their smiles, their intellect, and their amiability, affect the quality of the daily routine at Randolph School.” Such was Rupa.

The Kakani Family Scholarship Fund
Established by the Kakani Family in 2005, this fund provides partial need-based scholarship for a deserving student who meets the School’s highest standard for enrollment.

The Betty Kofskey Scholarship Award
The Kofskey Fund is a living memorial, which has been set up in recognition of Betty Kofskey, a former Randolph School faculty member. Members of the English Department award the scholarship annually to a rising 9th grade student who exhibits unusual aptitude and appreciation for literature and language.

The Lyle Alumni Award
The Lyle Alumni Award for Enthusiasm originated in 1976. In 1988 the fund was restructured to annually award a tuition credit to a male and female Randolph student “completing the 9th grade, as selected by a faculty committee, who demonstrate the characteristics of enthusiasm, industriousness, pride in achievement, conscientiousness, and performance to the best of one’s innate ability in both academic and nonacademic activities.”

The Anthony J. Lynch Award
This fund is “presented annually to one member of the faculty or administration who consistently demonstrates the characteristics epitomized by Commander Anthony J. Lynch – dedication, leadership, character and the willingness to give consistently that extra effort above and beyond what is expected.” A second award of annual tuition credit that will pay all or part of tuition and fees is presented to a student who is a U.S. citizen. The student must demonstrate the qualities of deep concern for others, truth, honesty and love for country.

The Bruce Tonetti Memorial Award
The Tonetti Award is “presented annually to an Upper School student who consistently displays qualities of the scholar-athlete academic prowess, representation of the School in interscholastic athletics, fair play and enthusiasm.” It is awarded in the form of a tuition credit, the maximum of which is 25% of Upper School tuition.

Matthew Pettis Naylor Memorial Scholarship Award
This award, a tuition credit, is presented to a rising junior who best exemplifies certain qualities of Matthew Naylor, a member of the Class of 2002, who died in an automobile accident on June 7, 2000. A Christian and a sportsman, Matthew engaged himself fully in the world around him. He loved his family, cherished his friends, and respected his teachers. The recipient of the award demonstrates Matthew’s enthusiasm, individuality, confidence and conscientiousness. Like Matthew, he or she enjoys learning, shows a special interest in literature and history, consistently performs to the best of his or her ability, and encourages excellence in others.

Jim Niedergeses
Award
Jim Niedergeses was a member of the Class of 1984. His life ended tragically, the result of an automobile accident. The Niedergeses family established this award in 1987 to honor his memory and to “recognize a student who exemplifies the attitude and effort of striving to go further than he or she has ever done before.” The recipient is selected by the Health and Physical Education Department Chair each year.

The Trey Wilbourn Memorial Scholarship
Capt. James N. Wilbourn, III, USMC (“Trey”) was a member of the Randolph class of 1980 and an excellent athlete. His outstanding military career culminated in his assignment as a pilot. In 1991, his Harrier jet was shot down in central Kuwait, ending the life of this true patriot. Trey was the first Alabamian to lose his life in the Gulf War. The Wilbourn family created a scholarship in his memory that is awarded annually to a rising junior or senior who has at least a 3.0 grade point average and has participated in at least two sports at Randolph.

This scholarship was established in 2003 by Mary Shepard and Cutter Hughes in honor of their family. The Fund provides tuition credit to students from historically underrepresented populations. Randolph School has been a part of our lives for many years. We had three children graduate and currently have five grandchildren who attend. Even though a significant amount of time has passed, the mission of Randolph, has remain unchanged. Students build a strong academic foundation and develop strong social skills, moral values, individual responsibility, character, concern for others, independence and confidence. I’m so grateful that our family has benefited from these principles and we gladly support efforts to strengthen the school for future students within the Randolph Family. Giving to the Randolph Fund is a perfect opportunity for grandparents to show their support.
Randolph provides so many opportunities for grandparents to be involved in campus activities and serve as volunteers. Through its use of the Seesaw student engagement platform, Randolph has given us a glimpse into what our grandchildren are learning in school. We enjoy watching their picture and video posts about their academic lessons and what special activities and projects they’re working on in different classes, including art, music, and world languages. When we respond with a comment online, it makes us feel connected in the educational life of our grandchildren. As grandparents, we have a very important role as ambassadors in our community and sharing the message that Huntsville is fortunate to have Randolph as an education choice. I love that our wisdom, life experiences, support, and guidance are always welcomed and appreciated.

Randolph is a supportive community of learners. One learning approach we teach our students is known as the Idea Path. This concept, while not new, is an intentional process that guides Randolph students through the development of an idea into a reality, in the classroom and beyond.
Students work on one or more aspects of the Idea Path in every subject, every day. Our teachers create hands-on experiences and allow them to make mistakes. Our goal is to push students out of their comfort zones to develop their own solutions. This process fosters persistence, grit, and ultimately confidence. There’s nothing better than seeing the “ah-ha” expression in a student’s face when the pieces fall together. They have not only just discovered an answer, but also strengthened their academic and life skills.
Without question, students are the focal point for all Randolph teachers. Whether in the advisory program or classroom, our work is intertwined, and we must work as a team to move forward. Support for students, either directly or indirectly, is shown when gifts are made to the Randolph Fund. Perhaps, the word gift should be replaced with the word investment. These students are present-day and future leaders. The work of Randolph graduates ranges from providing hunger relief and life-saving medical treatment, to helping develop a COVID-19 vaccine. I would hope that all Randolph students know that their teachers care, believe in them, and want to make a positive difference in their lives.

We can all agree that the happiness of our children is a priceless gift. We joined the Randolph community in 2008 when our daughter entered the 2nd grade. She was previously home-schooled, and it became apparent almost immediately that she was very happy and thriving. At that time, the first two days of the school year were half days. Picking her up that first day of 3rd grade, my heart sunk as I inquired about the reason for her sadness. Her response made me chuckle. “Why do we have two half days at the beginning of the year?” she asked. “I want to go to school for the whole day.” What more could a parent ask for? I am certain that Randolph’s commitment to educating the whole child and providing extraordinary experiences contributes to our children’s happiness. This makes it easy for us to give to the Randolph Fund.
Volunteerism undoubtedly strengthens our school community. We are all familiar with the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” This means our “village” – faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, alumni, and trustees – must work together and connect with our students in meaningful ways. Imagine hands-on learning from a chemical engineer, composer, or college athlete. Whether assisting with concessions at athletic functions, reading to Lower School students, or putting up signs to advertise a school play, volunteers are demonstrating to students the importance of working together and serving others with humility, which in turn builds character.
RESILIENT, RESOURCEFUL, AND RALLYING TOGETHER
The 2019-2020 and 60th anniversary school year will be forever etched in our minds as one of significant celebrations and changes.
Our school year began with a joyous return to campus and 60th birthday party for Randolph and ended with face masks, new terms like “social distancing”, and restricted gatherings. Adopting the motto “Resilient, Resourceful, and Rallying Together” in the spring, our school community rose to the challenge and persevered through the abrupt, and at times, uncomfortable circumstances caused by the pandemic.
While we were faced with a new normal and social separation, it didn’t end our efforts to support students and their families and our dynamic faculty and staff. Together, we worked to sustain our educational experience and sense of community. Through Zoom calls, surprise deliveries, yard signs, cooking and fitness challenges, art, music, parades, and special video presentations, the Raider Nation adapted and found alternative ways to celebrate beloved traditions and create new ones.
The Flat Raider helped us connect through pictures and videos of virtual school, work, family and fun. The Flat Raider had some interesting adventures, including 3D printing face shields for the medical community and participating in a virtual 5K and one mile fun run. The compassion and generosity of members of our school community led to the establishment of the Raider Relief Fund, which provides direct support to our students whose families have been impacted by COVID-19 and are finding it difficult to provide tuition, school supplies, uniforms, and other direct educational expenses. While Randolph is fundamentally a school, at our core, we are so much more than that. We are a community, committed to staying connected and helping our Raider family.

The foundation of our philanthropic programming. As a non-profit, it is essential that we generate a healthy annual giving program to the Randolph Fund, so that our current programs are strong and healthy. Volunteer
Randolph’s greatest asset is people, and as member of the Randolph Community Network, you play an active role in strengthening our community. There are numerous opportunities to become involved, in the classroom through Randolph Connect, at an athletic event, play or musical, Under the Christmas Tree, or the Spring Swing. Because campus is always buzzing with activities, our students benefit from volunteerism during the school day, after school, in the evenings, and on weekends; volunteers are always needed! When you volunteer at Randolph, everyone benefits – students, faculty, and you!
