He went on to attend the Virginia Military Institute, where he earned a BS in Civil Engineering, was named a Distinguished Military Student, and awarded the VMI Intercollegiate Athletic Award for Excellence. He also co-captained the 1964 VMI football team and was selected All-Southern Conference in baseball for three consecutive years as a shortstop (he also led the team in batting). In 1975, he was inducted into the VMI Sports Hall of Fame.

Donny served a distinguished tour of duty as a commissioned field artillery officer in the United States Army, including a tour in Vietnam. He earned a number of decorations for his service - the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters. He would later rejoin VMI as a defensive backfield coach, then co-defensive coordinator, head baseball coach, and in 1998, Athletic Director. He held the position until his retirement in 2013.
