STICKING WITH SAFETY Based in southwest Kansas, Mast Trucking Inc. offers a wide range of haulage services to accommodate any type or size of goods transport in the lower forty-eight states. Leroy Mast, President and CEO and a native from Ohio, found his way ‘home’ to Kansas by way of working wheat harvest. “Copeland is dry prairie land. There are not any trees here, but there is opportunity,” says Leroy. “My first truck was lease purchase through a friend back in 2007. I retained my own authority and paid that truck off a year later. I continued to work with one truck for a bit. Then I bought a second truck and continued adding trucks from there. During the 2010/2011 oilfield boom, we got into that and the agriculture game. There was a significant drought at the time and hay and feed was needed. We made a lot of deliveries to and from the Dakota’s during 6

that time.” Mast incorporated January 1, 2011 and were running twelve to thirteen trucks. “When the oil field work trailed off in 2012/2013, we changed our business model and began diversifying our fleet by offering local freight hauling which allowed us to add on another set of customers,” shares Leroy. “Since that time with the additional workload demand, we average adding five to six trucks per year and continue to do so. Currently we operate fifty trucks, eighty van trailers, have thirty three company drivers, seventeen owner-operator drivers and a total of fifty-eight on staff that include admin, our shop team and drivers.” NATIONAL FOOTPRINT FROM A SMALL TOWN “We are a little unique in our little part of the world, because we are the only dry van operation in western Kansas. There’s plenty of reefer business serving the meat packing industry, but zero dry van operations.

We are fortunate that we work with some really big shippers here in Kansas and across the country. We’ve made our mark and have been very successful in being able to obtain some big contracts. Here we are from nowhere Kansas with these large national contracts, so yes I am pretty proud of that. We provide a great service to these quality shippers nationwide offering capacity. They have come to expect a more personal working relationship with us and we follow through with a great reliable service that has helped grow our footprint in Kansas,” Leroy adds. “We also have the latest in tracking capabilities and utilize the best technology available. We are EDI capable. We are also listed on Project 44’s Carrier’s List.” “I’m working on trying to get my sons into the business, and want to give a huge shout out to our long time Office Manager, Aggie Berg. She has made everything possible and we would not be where we are today with her!” THE SAFEST TRUCKS ON THE ROAD “I share this story of an incident that happened several years ago because I think it is an important one to get out there. We had a driver involved in a horrible accident where he was driving in the middle of nowhere and hit a cow. I firmly believe he is alive today because of the Volvo Trucks steel cab. I have seen too many other similar type wrecks and lost drivers that were in fiberglass cabs. The safety equipment that we had in that truck is probably what saved his life. This accident was so horrific that it could have easily killed him,” Leroy shares.

Leroy credits the steel cab for allowing his driver to walk away safely from such a horrific accident.

Just last week, we had a visit from my salesman, the F&I Manager, and corporate Volvo Sales Manager altogether. That’s some great attention right there and Bruckner’s offers good customer service all around. Leroy is heavily involved in KMCA. He is currently on the executive committee and is slated to be president in 2 years. “KMCA does a great job promoting safe trucking, education, promotion, road team and truck driving championship,” add Leroy. “As we have built our relationship with LeRoy and Mast Trucking over the years, it has grown into more of a partnership than anything else. ACTIVE DRIVER ASSIST Using a combination of advanced radar technology and a windshield-mounted camera, Active Driver Assist helps drivers be alert to slower-moving or stationary vehicles. If the distance suddenly decreases between the truck and a vehicle ahead, the system will sound an alarm to alert driver response and, if the driver does not respond in time, can apply brakes, reducing the severity of a crash or preventing it altogether.
