FRIENDSHIP AT ITS CORE

BCB Transport is a nation-wide commercial freight hauler based outside of Dallas in Mansfield, Texas.

What started out as a friendship between Rick Larkin, President and Brian Brzozowski, Vice President, turned into a vision of something much more.

Rick & Brian met in 97’ as co-workers in the trucking industry. Rick worked on the contracting side while Brian was on the employee side of operations. Over time, they developed a great friendship spending time together outside of work and playing on the company softball team. Their kids were even born four days apart and are also best friends. Over the years, work took them separate ways with company and position changes, but they continued to stay in touch and remained friends. Brian shares, “During a casual conversation, Rick informs me that I needed to quit my job because we were going to start a trucking company together. Little did I know how serious he was.”

“We opened our doors on March 1, 2011 with no customers and no drivers with the lights off to save on electricity. Basically we had concrete floor space and that was it,” says Rick. “By that Thursday we acquired our first of many drivers and on that Friday, our fifth day open, we had our first customer and were officially 6

in the warehousing business. Over the next couple of months we had grown to having thirty owneroperator drivers working for us. We quickly outgrew that space and two years later we worked with the City of Mansfield to swap out some land and built our current facility. Today we have 261 employees and are currently undergoing another warehouse building expansion.”

“We are dedicated to keeping things positive, supportive, clean and family oriented here. We are a business that wants to be involved in our community.

For example, we provide office and meeting space for the Mansfield Fire Department and that has been a great partnership to have,” states Rick. “We send out birthday cards and gifts not only to our employees but also to their spouses and children. We installed a kitchen and gathering space in our building and cook several times weekly for drivers and during orientation. We fully sweep our warehouse several times a day and keep high standards for cleanliness.

We have high standards in everything that we do.

When you give the best, you expect the best. We value life here. That is the core in everything that we do. Valuing life is the most important thing.”

“Something unique to BCB is our radio program,” shares Brian. “We do a show seven days a week and twice a day Monday through Friday that primarily focuses on safety and our safety point of the week.

The show runs seven days a week because safety runs 7 days a week just like our drivers do. We cover national weather reports, sports updates, trending topics, regulations, and bring awareness on various subjects. We also do a segment called Hidden Gems where our drivers share all of the good places to stop and eat that they have experienced while out on the road. We showcase performance numbers, CSA scores, do our weekly phrase that pays with hints given through the week and pays out fifty dollars to the winner on Fridays. Thursdays are our ‘Thankful Thursdays’ where we highlight a driver for the week.

We take prayer requests and pray at the beginning of each show. We make it personal. We want to offer community for our drivers and provide an opportunity for our drivers to connect.” The BCB Live team consists of Drive Safe Dave, Sir Rick, Music Man Mike, Buckle Up Bob, and Magic Matt.

“All of our trucks include a forward facing interactive camera system created by Telematics that records breaks, lane departure, stability control, and the ability to hit the Emergency Record Button. The driver can call in and when green, they’re “hot’ for recording purposes. This allows our drivers to listen in and engage with their peers. We have concluded that 85% of our drivers that consistently call in are not involved in any accident reports, so it works.

“SAFETY STRUCK is where we discuss and share safety topics, videos, and pictures before, during and after the ‘BCB LIVE’ Radio Show. ‘Safetystruck’ is also our company theme song to the tune of ACDC’s Thunderstruck that starts the show. Music Man Mike busts out lead with Buckle up Bob our Director of Safety doing back up,” adds Rick. “We keep our show positive with the constant goal of asking ourselves, how can we get better? We cover things that we do well, not so well and focus on what we can learn. This is a great way to stay in contact with our biggest asset, the drivers. It’s all about culture. We have built our culture around safety and have fun with it. Top down to bottom we do safety. Safety is primary and always at the base of everything that we do. We believe in it and strive to be the safest company in America!”

“What is unique to BCB is the dynamic of the partnership. These guys have grown a culture at BCB with safety as the primary goal. They preach it and live it every day,” says Shawn Wood, Bruckner salesman. “My involvement with BCB began as a cold call. I caught Rick in the office and he graciously sat down with me one-on-one for an hour at our first meeting. He indicated they were looking for alternatives to turn their fleet into assets. Rick asked great questions and was open minded to partnering with a dealership group interested in a long term relationship to help them transition into owning their trucks.”

Timing is everything when transitioning a fleet. The yearlong process culminated with a twenty-five truck order followed up by a visit to the Volvo factory is early spring of 2019 and have another large order pending for Q1 of 2020,” shares Shawn.

“Many factors went into our decision to start running the Volvo brand. Of those were fuel economy, driver comfort and most importantly the safety countermeasures of the Volvo truck. It was mostly about the safety features, amenities for drivers, driver retention, good fuel mileage, plus it’s just a good looking truck,” Brain states. “The Volvo tour and the Bruckner service and attention has been impeccable from start to finish!”
