IMMERSION INTO THE HYDROVAC INDUSTRY Gary Harms of Integrated Chassis Solutions says versatility in his professional career led to the startup of ICS. Gary joined the US Air Force after college and served as a B-52 Aircraft Commander. As a civilian, he returned to welding and fabrication work and designed, manufactured and installed custom stainless equipment for cheese production and beef processing. As the oil and gas industry began booming in mid 2000’s, Gary shifted directions to heavy drilling rig and tank production. He was sought after for production on a new concept in the US with Hydrovac technology.

Hydrovaccing was heavily controlled by government and infrastructure company regulations to manage safe digging. Integrated Chassis Solutions was born to create an entirely new R&D (research and development) company focused on hydrovac technology.

Gary credits his son Jason Harms for influencing this exciting new endeavor. “He knew that I was swarming with ideas on hydrovaccing,” said Gary. Jason, a Petroleum Engineer and Drilling Superintendent, also had a wealth of knowledge to contribute in the excavation and extraction industries.

Gary secured additional patents and when the market conditions were favorable, it was time to solely focus on hydrovaccing.

After years of research, ICS concentrated on the needs and challenges of hydrovac customers. ICS engineers developed three unique next-generation hydrovac unit prototypes focusing on accessibility and efficiency. “The VOC (voice of the customer) was key in every decision that we made,” says Gary. “All decisions, all technical changes in manufacturing - Everything is done with the end-user’s needs in mind. These next-gen units offer superior advantages pertaining to reach, depth, height, terrain, repositioning, environmental impact and offroad capabilities.”

INTRODUCING THE ICS-6425 HYDROVAC WITH THE “QUICK CHANGE BOX” FEATURE Designed for efficiency, the ICS-6425 utilizes its boom as a vacuum source to the vacuum boxes. It is able to fill, unload and pick up containers repeatedly while remaining at the job site. THE ICS-6416 The ICS-6416 offers superior payload and efficiency over traditional hydrovacs featuring an upgraded 16yard debris capacity and 2,000 gallons of water in the central tank. The unit includes a full radius half-moon rear door and a 10° floor slope along with an extension cylinder that will raise the tank an additional 35°. FINDING THE IDEAL PARTNERSHIP & TRUCK – THE ROAD THAT LED TO BRUCKNER’S AND THE MACK CHASSIS As Gary was looking for a preferred chassis manufacturer, he met with Bruckner’s Denver Sales Representative, Steve Givigliano, and was once again reintroduced to Mack Trucks. Gary grew up with the Mack brand as his grandfather co-owned a family company with a fleet of 20 bulldogs. Gary’s father was also a Mack truck driver and mechanic and had a great deal of influence on the decision to build on Mack chassis.

Gary immediately recognized Mack’s unique powertrain features surpassing all other options. “I was most impressed with the rear-end differentials and the MP®8 motor with the new mDrive automated technology,” said Gary. “Some of the biggest obstacles in the engineering of hydrovacs are the driveline, driveline angles and the harmonics produced by vacuum equipment. Mack’s driveline is set up in such a precise, level and stable way that it creates the least amount of harmonic friction in the entire hydrovac drivetrain system.”

By always seeking opportunities to provide their customers with the most innovative equipment on the market, Bruckner’s understood the potential in developing these integrated machines. The Bruckner’s

team facilitated direct communication between ICS and Mack engineers to develop specific chassis modifications building them to spec exclusively for the hydrovacs. Gary notes, “It’s awesome that a small-town manufacturing company can deal directly with Bruckner’s and the head engineers at the Mack factory to get the customer the best possible hydrovac product on the market today.”

ICS’s partnership with Bruckner’s allows both companies to remain focused on their strengths benefiting the end user. With Bruckner’s established network of 26 locations across 6 states, customers are now able to receive the hydrovac education, sales, service and aftermarket support they need, while ICS is able to concentrate on hydrovac production and the implementation of new industry technologies.

Amends the FMVSS on air brake systems to improve the stopping distance performance of truck tractors. The rule requires the vast majority of new heavy truck tractors to achieve a 30 percent reduction in stopping distance compared to currently required levels. For these heavy truck tractors (approximately 99 percent of the fleet), the amended standard requires those vehicles to stop in not more than 250 feet when loaded to their gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and tested at a speed of 60 miles per hour (mph). For a small number of very heavy severe service tractors, the stopping distance requirement will be 310 feet under these same conditions. In addition, this final rule requires that all heavy truck tractors must stop within 235 feet when loaded to their “lightly loaded vehicle weight” (LLVW).
