READY-MIX ROOTS Brothers, Tony and George Schwarz, were essentially born into the concrete and aggregate business starting with their grandfather, A.M. Schwarz and father, Gordon, who made their way from Kerrville, TX, to Los Angeles and ended up in Pittsburg County, OK. “Our family started out with dump trucks back in 1937 hauling sand and gravel and later acquired truck mixers and a batch plant. We grew up in a lot of trucks seats, that’s for sure,” Tony says. Both boys sought other avenues of education and careers. George became an engineer and Tony majored in pre-dental when both realized that getting back to their concrete roots and owning their own business was the only thing that would genuinely make them happy.

Twin Cities started modestly with a small ready mix plant, a loader, and one concrete mixer truck. The company quickly grew to a ‘fleet’ of three trucks with Tony and George doing all of the batching, driving, and mechanic work while Wanda managed the office. “It was long hours doing concrete work during the day and hauling aggregates at night, but we had fun doing it,” says Wanda. Two years later, they opened a second plant nearby in McAlester which remains corporate headquarters today. Gordon was also an active partner for nine years until his retirement. Tony shares, “Dad offered a lot of great advice and helped us tremendously in those early days.”

Tony and Wanda’s children, Chris, John, and Joey also grew up working in the concrete business. “All three boys approached us together about In May of 1972, along with their wives Wanda and Pam, their lifetime commitment. Eastern OK in Broken Arrow, Eufaula, McAlester, Muskogee, Poteau, Sapulpa, Stigler, Tahlequah, Tulsa, and Wilburton. “The move to Tulsa in 1998 was a huge move for us and our biggest leap of faith yet but it took us to a new level of growth,” shares Chris. They also formed sister company, 4 S Trucking, taking on private carrier business running a fleet of 25 tractor-trailers. “We already hauled 100% of our own raw material. Other companies wanted us to transport bulk cement so we added ten trucks to accommodate the demand,” John states. “Driver shortage and regulations are our biggest challenges,” says Joey. “Hopefully things will change because it’s an ongoing issue for the entire trucking industry.” Wanda retired after 35 years of running the office, but continues to advise as needed. She has been a great help to the company throughout the years. George passed away in April 2015. He endured many health problems during his last years which limited his ability to physically work but was a great asset with ideas and advice; however his and Pam’s son, Tyler, is active in the business. He, along with Chris, John, and Joey, and John’s oldest son, Matthew, comprise a 4th and 5th generation of this concrete producing family. Another important aspect is John’s wife, Renae, and Joey’s wife, Toni, work daily in the accounting offices while Chris’s wife, Shanon, works in the educational field. Tony and Wanda have five grandchildren with several showing an interest. “The employees are the heart of this company and deserve much of the credit for our success. Many have been with us for 20+ (and some 40+) years and are truly the nucleus of our business,” Tony shares. “We take joy in supplying jobs for our 150 employees and consider them to be a part of the family,” says Wanda. When it comes to philanthropy, the Schwarz’s prefer to remain behind the scenes. “We help a lot of churches and individuals in need, but like to do it privately,” says Tony.

NO REGRETS “Working in this industry was enjoyable and an amazing path for my life,” Tony shares. I can’t imagine our lives having gone in any other direction,” adds Wanda. “I’m most proud of our family unity and having all of our boys

We have truly lived the American dream. Seeing our efforts continue on for our children and grandchildren is probably the most rewarding thing of all. Our daughters-in-law have also been a part of our success through their support and also having two of them being an active part of the business with us.” “The best thing for me is the cohesiveness among us and having

Clint became a trusted partner, advising us of what we did and did not need and informing us of what would and would not work.
