AMERICAN WASTE CONTROL American Waste Control (AWC) needs no introduction when it comes to the “Waste World.” AWC is largely well known in their industry and throughout Northeast Oklahoma for their innovative business model that touches every aspect of waste and trash management.

They offer fully integrated waste control solutions through waste collection, recycling and disposal – completing the entire cycle from garbage pick up to using that same garbage to produce electricity, generating 3.2 megawatts of power to more than 18,000 Oklahoman’s daily. American Waste Control covers a majority of the Tulsa, OK market operating a 135 truck fleet that serves more than 10,000 commercial and 30,000 residential customers. Although American Waste Control takes great pride in serving as a cutting edge industry leader, they also provide an abundant amount of resources to philanthropic efforts and through local community support. Building a Bulldog Tough Business

American Waste Control has purchased roughly 250 Mack Trucks over the years. “Mack is a great truck for the refuse business,” claims owner, Kenneth Burkett. “I like my equipment bulldog tough especially with the all Mack gold bulldog. You’re only as good as the equipment that you run in this business, so having good equipment is really important.”

KENNETH BURKETT

The Boy, The Baker, The Trash Man, The Engineer, The Visionary, The Giver

Much has been written about American Waste Control over the years and the business that Kenneth Burkett built, but very little about Kenny, the man behind it all. Kenny’s story is actually a culmination of many. Even the trash has a story to tell in Kenny’s world, another form of “trash talk” so to speak. Kenny’s success story began at the young age of 10 years old. It was then that he lost his mother in a needless accident to a drunk driver. That pivotal moment in Kenny’s life forever changed and developed him with the character that he possesses today - Fearless. According to Kenny’s stepson and AWC Vice President, Paul Ross, “Kenny did not set out to build this empire, but being

willing to take many risks because what else could life throw at him after losing his mother, having the work ethic and outworking them all, and having the vision, it naturally occurred.” Kenny started out in life as a baker owning his own bakery making donuts, cakes, croissants, and bagels before bagels were even a thing. A neighbor and customer kept pushing Kenny to get into the trash business. Kenny, already used to being up early and serving customers in the early morning hours, took a risk and changed careers from baked goods and dough to picking up garbage as a one man, one truck operation. “I never dreamed of being in the trash business, but here I am and I love it,” Kenny says. Kenny prides himself in finding a delicate balance of having a hand in every aspect of his business to handing off the baton and delegating to the trusted people who work alongside him. Kenny knew that as he grew, he would have

AWC started running Mack front loaders. AWC currently works over 100 Mack refuse & roll off trucks.

AWC opened Tulsa Recycling & Transfer Center (TRT). To date, TRT has recycled more than a billion tons of material.

AWC purchased & opened American Environmental Landfill (AEL). It is the largest landfill in Oklahoma and the only landfill in the state to produce electricity from methane waste. AEL is considered Oklahoma’s safest, cleanest and most environmentally conscious landfill and rated #1 landfill in Oklahoma according to DEQ.

The American Therapeutic Riding Center (ATRC) was founded

by Kenneth and Vickie Burkett.

AWC purchased the Material Recovery Facility (Mr. Murph).

Home to Oklahoma’s only hybrid MRF, this facility is known for its recycling innovation and provides over 600 free recycling drop off centers in Tulsa, OK. Wildlife preservation & conservation efforts began at AEL, and bee and butterfly sanctuaries have been developed.

AWC became the Tulsa Christmas Parade Title Sponsor.

Burkett inducted into the National Waste and Recycling Association’s Hall of Fame.

to let go and learn to share much of the responsibility with others. Paul shares that Kenny’s drive is what makes his company so successful. “Kenny is always the same man regardless of who he is with. He is the same Kenny around CEO’s as he is around his drivers. In fact, he still thinks like a driver and maintains his CDL. He is a man full of integrity. He keeps his word and is old-fashioned in the way he conducts his business. Millions of dollars in deals have been made with Kenny and a handshake,” Paul reports.

Maintaining a good reputation is very important to Kenny. “Right is right and wrong is wrong. Do it right,” Kenny often preaches. “Do it right,” is an unspoken motto throughout the company. When something is not right, Kenny notices and wants it corrected. The word “right” is a word often used in Kenny’s vocabulary. His team is expected to uphold very high standards that are set before them. He is full of ideas and has a hard time shutting his brain off when it comes to his business. When asked the about future plans for his company, Kenny simply says, “Keep growing.” Growing and nurturing things clearly is in Kenny’s nature. Although he does not have an engineering degree, he certainly thinks like one, as he plans his operations and problem solves to maximize efficiency. Todd Green, Vice President Landfill Operations, says, “Kenny is known as a giant in the industry. He joined a very elite group of individuals this year, being one of only 187 recipients in our industry with his recent induction into the Hall of Fame. What an honor it is to be able to work for him.”

Kenny attributes his success to others. “It’s all about the people. They have gotten me to where I am today,” Kenny shares. “It’s our way of giving back and saying thank you for being a part of our family,” says Kenny.

Paul concludes, “The trash business is not easy. Once it gets in your blood, you can’t get it out. For 47 years, Kenny has been a trash man, and will always be a trash man.”

Kenneth Burkett has lived the majority of his life as a trash man, but certainly a life not wasted…

Amends the FMVSS on air brake systems to improve the stopping distance performance of truck tractors. The rule requires the vast majority of new heavy truck tractors to achieve a 30 percent reduction in stopping distance compared to currently required levels. For these heavy truck tractors (approximately 99 percent of the fleet), the amended standard requires those vehicles to stop in not more than 250 feet when loaded to their gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and tested at a speed of 60 miles per hour (mph). For a small number of very heavy severe service tractors, the stopping distance requirement will be 310 feet under these same conditions. In addition, this final rule requires that all heavy truck tractors must stop within 235 feet when loaded to their “lightly loaded vehicle weight” (LLVW).
