100 Years of Dude Ranching 1926 – 2026

BY SCOTT T. BAXTER
On many dude ranches in the small hours of the morning, horses are gathered from their pastures and driven to ranch headquarters during a daily ritual often called “The Wrangle.” Ranch guests gather to listen to pounding hooves and watch their vacation companions arrive to the ranch for the day’s activities, repeating a tradition that has been in existence for decades.
This selection of images by Scott T. Baxter captures the landscapes and people of historic dude ranches that have existed for a century or longer and carry on such traditions.
In celebration of dude ranching’s 100th year, Scott traveled over 20,000 miles across the American West to photograph the dude ranches that have been around since the beginning to create the companion book to this collection, 100 Years of Dude Ranching.
Scott is no stranger to the American West with three major fine art projects celebrating ranching, cowboys and the Western way of life: 100 Years 100 Ranchers, Top Hand and Gathering the Remnants
The Wrangle features photographs from his newest centennial project to explore the landscapes dude ranches call home, and the people who continue to provide guests a hearty taste of the West paired with hospitality that has kept them coming back for over a century.
Scott T. Baxter’s fine art photography work of the American West captures the dichotomy between the elegance and untamed nature of the West. Baxter’s work is in numerous museums and private collections, including the permanent collections of The Phoenix Art Museum, Sigler Western Museum, The Booth Museum of Western Art, Taos Art Museum, Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport Museum and the Scottsdale Public Art Program.

History by LYNN DOWNEY
Foreword by BOB BOZE BELL
Dude ranching found its official start in 1926, when a group of ranchers decided to create a governing organization for the industry that had begun to blossom in the late 1800s. The first dude ranches found their guests longing to extend their stays and happy to pay in exchange, as they explored and adventured in the American West.
In celebration of the centennial of the Dude Ranchers’ Association, this book explores modern and historic dude ranching at 26 ranches that were at the forefront of the industry, hosting dudes and giving them a taste of the West by 1926.
With photographs by award-winning photographer Scott T. Baxter, this book explores modern dude ranching at these historic ranches as captured over the course of a year; paired with historic information to see how each ranch has changed over a century. A history of the DRA and dude ranching written by historian Lynn Downey chronicles the story of dude ranches — the West’s first destination vacation.
