Welcome to Circle A’s 7th Annual Fall Bull & Heifer Sale. What a difference a year makes!

Compared to last year, our hay barns are full and the green grass has been a blessing. For years now the US has been on hold to expand the cowherd and the time may finally be right.

We are still optimistic about the future for cattle producers. For the next few years supplies are going to remain low and we are very likely to hit new price records for all classes of cattle. There will be big rewards for those who “gear-up” prior to the high prices and have calves to sell when the market is high.

Over the last several years we’ve witnessed a divergence in the types and prices paid for feeder calves. You either produce a low-quality product as cheap as you can and the buyer takes a big risk and pays a low price, or you produce a premium product and receive a premium price. We obviously feel we’re producing a premium product and want to pass those premium genetics and our reputation on to you. No matter where you market your calves, Circle A’s genetics and reputation will help your calves command top dollar.

Individual Performance

All bulls have been vaccinated, dewormed and fertility tested by Genex. All cattle will be accompanied by proper health certificates for immediate shipment. Certified herd #1718. As we have moved to selling older bulls we have learned how to develop them slower and better. While their weights may be slightly lighter than other producers, they should prove to be more durable and more athletic as a result of their development. All bulls are virgin bulls, unless otherwise stated.

EPDs in this sale book in red represent performance in the top 10% of the breed or better. Registered Angus Bull EPDs are current as of August 6, 2013.

Red Pedigree Names

Circle A formed the Angus Sire Alliance in 1996 as an exclusive method to progeny test Angus sires for overall profitability. This program identifies sires that are multi-trait performers through comprehensive testing in a real-world commercial environment.

Throughout the catalog, sire names in red have been tested through the Angus Sire Alliance.

Terms and Conditions

Terms of the sale are cash or check on sale day or payment wired on the next business day. Cattle will sell under the standard terms and conditions as recommended by the American Angus Association.

Breeding Soundness Guarantee

Every effort has been made to ensure the bulls offered for sale are fertile. All bulls have undergone a breeding soundness exam and are guaranteed against breeding injury for 90 days from the date of sale. If a replacement is needed, one will be provided depending on availability. If a replacement is not available, credit may be given in the next bull sale, minus the salvage value and breeding use fee of the injured bull. If any injury should occur, please notify Circle A Ranch within the 90 day warranty period and prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage. Heifers are guaranteed bred via ultrasound and are guaranteed bred for 45 days following the sale. If you notice a cycling heifer within 45 days of the sale, have her confirmed open by a licensed veterinarian and contact Circle A within 45 days from sale date.

Like Circle A’s buy-back program, it’s here for the long haul.

Program

Top of your regional market for a base price. Up to an additional $35 per head in added incentives:

$25 per head for calves out of bulls purchased from Circle A. $10 per head for calves out of females purchased from Circle A.

Requirements • Calves must be out of a sire or dam purchased directly from Circle A. • Calves must weigh 600-800 lbs. (if not, they get back on the trailer).

• Calves must be weaned at least 45 days (60 preferred).

• Calves must have two rounds of Circle A’s required vaccinations.

• Males must be castrated, heifers open and all calves polled or dehorned.

• All calves must be at least 51% black hided.

• Beginning January 1, 2014, suppliers must have only Circle A Bulls on their operation.

Circle A Genetic Evaluation System

The Circle A Genetic Evaluation System utilizes the production, reproduction and carcass data gathered across all of Circle A’s Ranches. While cattle at these ranches are not registered, we have built an extensive pedigree on all of them. Over the years we have collected more than 154,000 weaning weights and 52,000 carcass records on these animals. This database has allowed us to compute EPDs on all animals for 15 production, carcass and reproduction traits. Using different combinations of those EPDs, we compute Maternal Profit and Terminal Profit indexes that are used to select animals to produce the next generation.

All EPDs and indexes for Circle A Premium Beef Bulls are computed from our proprietary system and are not the same as EPDs and indexes on bulls registered with the American Angus Association.

To date we have purchased over $34 million worth of calves from our customers and paid $1,300,000 in added premiums that they wouldn’t have gotten anywhere else. That’s added value—Guaranteed!

Feed Intake EPD

The difference between any two sires’ Feed Intake EPDs is the average expected daily feed consumption difference of their steer offspring during the feedlot finishing phase. A negative number reflects less feed required for gain.

Yield Grade EPD

The difference between any two sires’ Yield Grade EPDs is the average expected USDA Yield Grade of their steer offspring. A higher EPD indicates a fatter, lighter-muscled carcass with a less desirable degree of red meat yield.

Yearling Weight EPD

The difference between any two sires’ Yearling Weight EPDs is the average expected yearling weight difference (in pounds) of their offspring of the same sex when produced in similar conditions and bred to comparable cow genotypes.

Marbling EPD

Heifer AI Pregnancy EPD

The difference between any two sires’ Heifer AI Pregnancy EPDs is the average expected difference in probability of conception of their heifer offspring to an artificial insemination service.

The difference between any two sires’ Marbling EPDs is the average expected USDA Marbling Score of their steer offspring. A higher marbling score translates to a higher USDA Quality Grade and thus, greater carcass value.

Terminal Profit Index

Cow Stayability EPD

The difference between any two sires’ Cow Stayability EPDs is the average expected difference in probability of their daughters staying in the herd through three years of production and having a calf in each of those years.

Maternal Profit Index

This index uses all of the components of the Terminal Profit Index, but includes Milk, Heifer AI Pregnancy and Cow Stayability EPDs. For those cattlemen retaining heifers, this is an excellent guide to balancing all economically important traits.

The difference in Terminal Profit Index is the average expected difference in profit of their steer offspring when factoring the costs and revenues associated with increased or decreased birth weight, weaning weight, post-weaning growth, feedlot feed consumption, USDA Yield Grade and USDA Quality Grade. For those retaining calves through feedyard and pricing those animals based on carcass value, this is the best means of genetic selection.

Circle A Genetics After six years of buying customer calves every single month, we feel our commitment to our customers is well established. We have been, and will remain, eager to pay premiums for calves out of Circle A genetics. We however, noticed an extremely small number of suppliers still running bulls not obtained from Circle A and a few of those calves may have made their way into our program. The only way we can afford to pay premiums on calves is to know that every calf we puchase is at least half Circle A genetics. We have spent many years and millions of dollars testing and developing genetics that will gain efficiently and hang an extremely high-quality carcass and we have deals in place with our buyers requiring us to guarantee the beef they buy to be out of Circle A genetics.

We hoped that a sense of honesty and integrity would make this a self-policing issue, but that has not proven to be the case with every supplier. It has been made clear for many years that every calf we purchase has to be out of a bull or female purchased directly from Circle A. In order to assure this is a reality, beginning January 1, 2014, we will require that all suppliers to Circle A Feeders only have Circle A bulls on their operation. For the vast majority of suppliers this is a non-issue as they run 100% Circle A bulls, for a few, it will be a decision that has to be made.

To accommodate all buyers, Circle A sells our commerical heifers just five head at a time. Five head may seem small compared to 100 head, but examine the difference five head can make to a small sized herd.

If you’re running 25 or 30 cows, about the average sized cow/calf operation in the Midwest, you still have to own a truck, a trailer, a head catch, feed bunks, hay racks, etc... You have nearly all the overhead costs of operation a 100 cow operation. Your annual expense of adding 5 more head to your operation is minimal, but your average overhead cost is decreased significantly. The greatest advantage is the added revenue those five head are going to provide next year.

At Circle A Feeders our average price paid for calves right now is running $1,100 with some exceeding the $1,200 mark. As the markets continue to climb, and looks to remain there for some time to come, five more heifers this year could mean $5,000 more dollars in your pocket next year at marketing time. All markets run in cycles and beef cattle look to be great for two or three years to come.
