Welcome to Lyons Ranch

Dear Friends, We welcome new and old friends to our family’s 30th annual Lyons Ranch Superior Genetics Sale!

Some of you participated in our first bull sale in 1988, and you purchased bulls in the pen behind the chicken house for years prior to that. As you know, many things have changed in this world, but what remains is our gratitude to share our lives and to be in the cattle business with you.

This truly is one of the deepest sets of bulls we have offered. We think when you see them they will speak for themselves. We don’t approach breeding cattle by looking at just one number, but want a realistic, balanced product that can perform for you. These bulls are the result of decades of planned breeding for a balance of the traits we value, including fertility, fleshing ability, attitude, performance, carcass and calving ease.

For the last seven years, we have DNA tested each sale animal through Angus Genetics Inc. The Zoetis i50K test we utilized this year generated the genomically enhanced EPDs shown in the catalog. We want you to have the highest degree of confidence in your herd bull decisions. We sell all fall bulls, developed more slowly, giving you a more mature herdsire that should hold up and cover more cows.

Lot Numbers Catalog numbers correspond to ear tags. All bulls are freeze branded for permanent, individual ID and with our 4-L Lyons Ranch brand.

Cattle will not sell in catalog order.

Sale order will be announced the weekend before the sale.

Semen Check & Herd Health All bulls have been semen evaluated and examined by Dr. Tom Taul, KABSU. Any unsatisfactory or non-breeders will not sell in our sale. Bulls will receive Express FP3 VL5 and Dectomax Pour-on prior to sale. We recommend all bulls receive a breeding soundness exam and vaccine booster prior to each breeding season. Our herd health protocol is overseen by Dr. Robert Haynes.

Throughout the year, our cowherd and the bulls selling have received Express FP3 VL5, Pyramid 5 with Presponse (2), Caliber 7 Blackleg (3), Pinkeye vaccine (2), Papilloma vaccine (2), Long Range Injectable, Dectomax Pour-on (2), Synergized Delice. The entire cowherd, as well as every bull selling, has tested negative for BVD-PI.

Buying Cattle Over the Internet Please let us know if you plan to buy over the internet and have applied but haven’t heard back from DV Auction within a few days.

After the sale, please contact Karl Langvardt to make payment and subsequent trucking arrangements. If you purchase cattle via the internet and are not satisfied, we have a sight-unseen guarantee.

Information in this Catalog Integrity of Data Today’s technological environment demands that we provide up-to-date information covering many selection criteria. Not every piece of data is important to every buyer. Pay attention to the information you need and evaluate the animals yourself on sale day to help ensure your own success.

With so much push toward producing curve-bending animals with extreme numbers, it can be tempting to focus on single trait selection when you are buying bulls.

As we have for generations, we encourage you to select what works for your program without going for extremes.

Cowherds need need well-rounded cattle with high fertility, good feet and legs, are easy fleshing and have strong udders – don’t forget this when you make your selections.

In every case, the integrity of the data is only as good as the person who reports it. We have made every attempt to collect and report data in an honest fashion. If you have any questions about any of the numbers provided, don’t hesitate to ask.

DNA Testing In addition to the regular weights and measurements we have recorded and reported for generations through Angus Herd Improvement Records at the American Angus Association, this year we tested the DNA on the sale bulls using the i50K Zoetis test. We have tested for merit for the last seven years, since the technology became readily available.

The American Angus Association tells us that adding a genetic profile can give the accuracies on a young bull’s EPDs as high as if he has already sired and recorded progeny on eight to 20 calves. We want you to be able to make solid breeding decisions for your operation’s success. All the EPDs in this book are GE-EPDs and the parentage on each animal is verified.

All potential carriers of the DD condition were tested. If a bull is a carrier, it is noted as DDC under his name in the catalog. No carriers of OS, AM, NH or CA sell in the sale.

Understanding the Numbers Production & Growth EPDs

Performance Data

CED – Calving Ease Direct EPD is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births that predicts the ease in which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first calf heifers. A higher CED value equals greater calving ease in first calf heifers.

BW The actual weight of the bull weighed on the day of his birth.

Milk – Maternal Milk EPD is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk in high daughters in comparison to daughters of other sires.

YW or YW2 YW - The weight of the bull adjusted to 365 days of age.

YW2 – The weight of the bull adjusted to 18 months of age.

BW – Birth Weight EPD expressed in pounds, is a predictor of that sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny in comparison to that of other sires.

Actual December WT, SC This actual weight and Scrotal Circumferences were taken on December 14, 2017.

WW – Weaning Weight EPD expressed in pounds, is a predictor of that sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth in comparison to the progeny of other sires.

Dam Nursing Ratio The average weaning ratio of all the calves that bull’s dam has raised. The ratios are calculated comparing the animals within our herd, therefore you cannot compare ratios between two breeders.

(An average ratio is always 100.) Example: The dam of Lot 1 has a Nursing Ratio of 2 – 108. Thus, she has raised two calves with weaning ratios that averaged together equal 108.

YW – Yearling Weight EPD expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth in comparison to the progeny of other sires.

Carcass EPDs

WW The bull’s weight adjusted to 205 days of age.

All weights and measurements are processed and adjusted through AHIR at the American Angus Association.

CW – Carcass Weight EPD expressed in pounds, is a predictor in the difference in size of the hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to that of other sires.

Marb – Marbling EPD expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to that of other sires.

REA – Rib Eye Area EPD expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in rib eye area of a sire’s progeny compared to that of other sires.

Fat – Fat Thickness EPD expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib of a sire’s progeny compared to that of other sires.

Index Values $Value Index EPDs are multi trait selection indices, expressed in dollars per head. (The $Value Indices include a prediction of the cattle market and feed cost at time the progeny of this bull will be sold.) An estimate of how future progeny is expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires. There are several $Value Indices. We have included the two below. $W – Wean Value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. The calculation for $W includes a prediction of the cattle market at the time of sale, cow feed cost adjustments, birth weight, weaning weight, milk and cow size. $B – Beef Value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. In addition to the prediction of the fat cattle market at the time of harvest, it includes feed cost and performance and carcass estimates.
