Iowa Beef Expo Heifer Award

Golden Broom Award Sponsored by Cyclone Trace Cattle Company, John Hagie. Presented to the Top Shorthorn Herdsman selected by the Iowa Shorthorn Association.

The Iowa Beef Breeds Council has started a program in which each breed holding a sale at the Iowa Beef Expo will have the opportunity to present a $500 Iowa Beef Expo Heifer Award sponsored by the Iowa Beef Breeds Council to a junior exhibitor who purchased and exhibited a heifer from their breed sale. Each breed association has been asked to develop their own criteria for this award.

Listed below are the two requirements of the Iowa Beef Breeds Council.

The Iowa Beef Breeds Council will award $500 to the junior exhibitor of the highest ranking heifer purchased from each breed sale at the 2012 Iowa Beef Expo and exhibited at the 2012 Iowa State Fair. Heifers will be ranked at the discretion of each breed association under the following conditions: 1. The heifer must have been purchased in an Iowa Beef Expo sanctioned sale and exhibited by a junior at the 2012 Iowa State Fair.

2. Only one heifer per breed sale (11 total) will be awarded. Therefore, high and low percentage cattle will be considered for one award. Furthermore, cattle with multiple breed registrations may only be awarded by the breed association which sold those cattle at the 2012 Iowa Beef Expo.

2013 Iowa Shorthorn Association Honored Breeder Lonny Flack Family, Oak View Shorthorns The first registered Shorthorns to grace the pastures of the Flack farm were purchased in 1964 from the Jim Fitzgerald Family of State Center, Iowa. The original Flack herd went by the name of Circle F Shorthorns until the name was changed to Oakview Shorthorns in 1969. Alvin and Donna Flack, parents of Lonny Flack, purchased what is now the home farm in 1968 and the Shorthorn herd was named Oakview Shorthorns due to the numerous majestic oak trees on the farm. Alvin and Donna Flack were previously Honored Breeders of the Iowa Royal/Iowa Beef Expo about 25 years ago. The first heifer shown by the family was Captain's Lavender 3rd, shown by Randy Flack at the Story County Fair in 1964. Lonny showed his first heifer, also at the Story County Fair, Clara 141st, in 1965. She had been purchased on order from Meadow View Ranches

by ASA field man Ted Aegerter for $200. The first heifer exhibited at the Iowa State Fair was Brentwood Village Maid 9th, purchased from Roger Appelgate, in 1967. The Flack Family has shown Shorthorns at the Iowa State Fair every year since. Oakview Shorthorns consigned their first cattle to the Iowa Royal/Beef Expo in 1973 and has missed only three years since. Shorthorns have always been a true family affair with the Flack Family.

Lonny's older brother, Randy, and sisters Jane and Susan all showed cattle at numerous state and local shows. Randy taught us all the value of patience with animals, Jane enjoyed going to the shows, but I don't think ever truly bonded with her projects, and Susan was the youngest, so she had to participate. I think she enjoyed it, too. Lonny and Kathie's children all took part in the Shorthorn project. Even Kathie, a town girl, got in on the act. Less than two weeks after Lonny and Kathie's wedding, we showed eight head at the All Iowa Fair in Cedar Rapids. Kathie was talked into holding a heifer in the best six head class. No sooner did she take the lead strap in her hand than the heifer sneezed all over the front of her shirt.

Needless to say, Kathie's show career was over, though we did talk her into preparing tails later on. Children, Betsy, Andrea, and Bradley all showed cattle at many fairs including the Iowa and Minnesota State Fairs, Kansas City, and Louisville. Bradley is the only family member to show at the National Junior Shorthorn Show when it was in Iowa a few years ago. The family stays busy with Church and family events. Grandchildren, Nolan, Maddie, Alex, Ben, Johnathan, Katie, and Megan keep us moving with many, many school programs, athletic games, dance recitals, piano concerts, and just plain family get togethers. We will continue to raise Shorthorns and show at the Iowa State Fair as long as we are able. Priorities have changed over the years, though. I used to so look forward to show day for the excitement and competition, I now most prize the trip to Ye Olde Mill with the grandchildren as soon as we are done showing. We have been fortunate to have had half a dozen or so top selling females at the Iowa Royal and feel a great sense of satisfaction knowing that we have helped many new or young breeders get started in the business along the way.

Although we don't really get too serious about showing any more, we have collected more ribbons and trophies than I can count. We even have two of the silver trays the Iowa Shorthorn Breeders Association used to award the exhibitor of the Champion Bull at the Iowa State Fair. I really don't know where any of these things are today. I am blessed to know that my family and friends are more closely at hand.

GENERAL INFORMATION Mailed Bids: Mailed or telephoned bids will be handled in a most confidential manner. If you are unable to attend the sale personally, simply contact a representative of the sale far enough in advance prior to sale day. They will be able to assist you at ringside on sale day.

Delivery: Every effort will be made by the sellers to assist you in the delivery of your purchases should you need assistance.

Update On Breeding And Calving Information: There will be added information available at the sale site that will list any additions to the catalog information.

Terms And Conditions: Terms of the sale are cash. Settlement is to be made with the clerk immediately following the sale and before the cattle are removed from the premises.

Billed Accounts: All billed accounts are due within 10 days following the date of the sale. At 10 days, a two percent service charge will be added to the unpaid balance and an additional two percent will be added every 30 days thereafter unless previous arrangements have been made with the owners or sale manager.

Liability: Each animal will be at the buyer’s risk as soon as sold, but will be cared for by the sellers for a reasonable amount of time. Neither the owners, employees, auctioneer, sale manager, or other affiliated personnel can be responsible for any accidents, but they will make every effort to provide for the comfort and safety of those attending.

Health: Each animal will have a state approved health certificate for interstate shipment. Buyers should make themselves aware of the health requirements for their respective states.

Breeding Guarantee: The Standard Breeding Guarantee as endorsed by the American Shorthorn Association will be followed.

Insurance will be available for your purchases from the sale clerk.

Registration And Transfer: All animals sell with completed pedigrees or applications for registration in the hands of the sale manager.

Announcements made sale day will take precedence over all printed material in this catalog.
