his summer,

Ashley Grant and I spent 3 fabulous days in the Nashville area at the Ingram Angus field day in Pulaski, Tennessee.

A chance to get out on a great American farm and mix and mingle with fellow beef producers...well, that’s my idea of a perfect day.

We arrived in Nashville and had a few hours to kill so naturally, we hit the shopping mall before taking a lovely drive out to the country.

The scenery looked like it was straight out of a storybook, dotted with gorgeous farms around every corner. As soon as we arrived at the Ingram farm, ranch owner Orrin Ingram drove up in a pick-up truck and waved to us “Hop in, let’s go look at some bulls!” As we jumped in, we realized that the GENEX guys (Ron Hinrichsen and John Barnes) were also in the truck, so we knew we were going to have a great time and learn a lot.

We laughed as we climbed in the back seat, because two hours earlier we were shopping at the Louis Vuitton store and now here we were looking at some of the best Angus bulls in America with three

The field day was a wonderful event.

We heard a great talk from Kelly Schaaf and then enjoyed a delicious Certified Angus Beef lunch and music from a bluegrass band. After lunch, Paul Hill told the story of how he got in the Angus business. When asked how he achieved his success, he said: “I had a lot of great mentors. They saw that I worked hard and was energetic...and they were willing to teach me. I learned everything I could from them.”

Work hard and be energetic. What great advice from a legendary Angus breeder, past American Angus Association president, and true stockman. Those are words we can all learn from, no matter our age or experience level.

Working hard and being energetic also describes the Ranch House team. Every day we have the opportunity to work with some of America’s greatest farms, ranches and ag businesses. Some days, we’re coding websites for a big e-commerce platform (really tech-y stuff) but other days, we’re watching a sunset over the hills of Tennessee gazing at breath-taking Angus bulls. It’s a great life, and we thank you, our customers and friends, for giving us the opportunity to be part of it with you in your businesses.

Texas Wedding in The Cowgirl Hall of Fame Photography by Chelsea Kaye Photography Lauren and Patrick Murray were married on October 14, 2017 at The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Texas.

Crafting a truly signature Texas wedding, the couple focused on simple details to amplify the intricate beauty of the venue. Their rustic theme included clever details such as horseshoe petit fours by McKinley’s Bakery and giving out steak seasoning as their favors.

Lauren, a childhood barrel racer, now works in the Horse Show Department at the Fort Worth Stock Show. Cole, a lifetime rancher, now works for Bonds Ranch in Saginaw, Texas. The couple now reside in Fort Worth, Texas; and look forward to sharing their life together in the ranching industry.

VISIT CALGARY TRAVEL

Calgary Stampede: The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth

T

hey call Calgary Stampede the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, which could be challenged as cliché until you attend. The annual 10-day event is held in early July in beautiful Calgary, Alberta. This city has the amenities and infrastructure to host such a large event matched with great weather, spectacular views and entertainment to attract attendees from all over the world. Although hosted in a cosmopolitan city, Calgary shifts it’s focus to western heritage as their purpose statement reads “to preserve and celebrate our western heritage, cultures and community spirit.”

I spent 5 days in Calgary and feel like I could have attended all 10 days and still not have experienced everything that the Calgary Stampede has to offer. However, based on my experience, here is a list of things I would recommend to future attendees.

GETTING THERE & TRANSPORTATION When considering a trip, ease of logistics is one of my top priorities. Visiting the Stampede for international travel is actually very simple.

YYC Calgary International Airport has several daily direct flights from the United States, which makes travel convenient and affordable. Once you arrive in Calgary, everything is relatively close in proximity. Uber and taxis are readily available.

THE RODEO

The rodeo is an afternoon performance starting daily at 1:15 p.m. By invitation only, rodeo 54 | Ranch House Journal

contestants are chosen based on qualifications and merit, so it is truly the best of the best competing.

The rodeo is a tournament style bracket system with a $2 million-dollar payout. With high stakes and rodeo’s toughest competitors, it is an event in which you will see a lot of talent, risk and grit.

Something interesting to note about the Calgary Stampede and their enthusiasm for the sport of rodeo is that they own their own worldrenowned bucking stock. They breed and raise their stock on an 8,000-acre ranch gifted to the Calgary Stampede Foundation. You will see some of Calgary’s Stampede bucking stock at premier rodeo events in the United States such as Rodeo Houston and the WNFR in Las Vegas.

GMC RANGELAND DERBY CHUCKWAGON RACES Beginning nightly at 7:45 p.m., the GMC Rangeland Derby Chuckwagon Races kick-off.

Calgary Stampede hosts the most famous and largest payout Chuckwagon race, with a payout of $1.15 million-dollars. Each race begins with outriders “breaking camp” by tossing an imitation stove into the back of their wagon, then quickly mounting their horses to follow the wagons as they figure eight around two barrels and then circle the track. The chuckwagons themselves consists of a team of four race horses, a driver and a very lightweight wagon. The first wagon to cross the finish line typically wins, although various time penalties are issued for infractions such as the stove not being properly loaded or the outrider crossing the finish line too far behind his wagon. The rules are simple, but I would

suggest taking the time to review them prior to attending, as knowing the rules of the game helps to add to the excitement by understanding what is happening. But I assure you, regardless of if you understand the rules, you will be entertained! It is as dangerous and exciting as it sounds.

THE GRAND STAND SHOW After the Chuckwagon Races, Stampede-goers can attend The Grandstand Show. Each year they have a different theme for the show, but the focus is consistently on entertainment as well as cultivating the warmth and pride of the Calgary community. The show features world-class acrobats, extreme athletes, music performances and culminates in a spectacular firework finale.

WESTERN SHOWCASE

The Western Showcase is a finer side to the Stampede that I really enjoyed. Located in the BMO Center, this is a western heritage art show. It is a contrast to the chaotic outdoor activities, set in a building with an oasis type atmosphere. You can peruse the different booths and stop and visit with various artists. You will find a display of incredible craftsmanship and enjoy the personable one-on-one interaction with artists. In the same building, they also have a stage with non-stop music and entertainment, and an area with cooking demonstrations and wine tasting.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP STOCK DOG TRIALS

The Stampede also hosts an array of western competitions, my favorite being the World Championship Stock Dog Trials. Instructed by a handler, each dog has four minutes to herd three sheep through an obstacle course and into a pen. It was incredible to watch these dogs as they relied on training, instincts, athleticism and their handlers to swiftly and keenly

navigate the course. I was not the only one that became a fan, as the finals were standing room only in the large Nutrien Western Event Centre coliseum.

If working dogs are not of interest, other western competitions at the Calgary Stampede included: Cutting, Heavy Horse Pull Competition, Heavy Horse Show, International Livestock Auctioneer Championship, North American Sheep Shearing Competition, Junior Classic Steer Show, Team Cattle Penning Championships, Vintage Tractor Pull, Working Cow Horse Classic, and Canadian Nationals Miniature Horse Show.

BANFF NATIONAL PARK & LAKE LOUISE

Although not actually at the Stampede, Banff National Park is within 1.5 to 2 hour driving distance.

Considered one of the most beautiful locations in North America, it is truly an awe-inspiring destination location.

I would highly recommend scheduling a day in this beautiful area. There are lots of different available day trips, excursions, activities, and dining options.

Aside from the things listed above, there are so many things to do at the Calgary Stampede- parades, demonstrations, and concerts. You will not run out of fun things to see and do. Because so much is offered, I would encourage attendees to plan to prioritize the things you most want to do. THE MIDWAY

The only person that doesn’t appreciate fair food is your cardiologist. At the Calgary Stampede you will find all the delicious classics: funnel cakes, corn dogs, street corn, and turkey legs. However, Calgary also has some unique offerings if

you dare to try. They offer a Cricket Grilled Cheese, which is your classic grilled cheese with an extra added crunch of actual crickets. They also have Smoking Charcoal Ice Cream, a coconut flavored soft-serve ice cream made from coconut husks infused with black, activated charcoal. A personal favorite being the Wine & Cheese, a wine-infused cake, deep fried into golden bites, paired with fried cheese curds and wine jelly for dipping. So whether you want to stick with the originals or branch out to something more eclectic, I am confident you will find a wide variety of options to choose from at the Stampede.

THE KEG STEAKHOUSE

Another dining experience that I really enjoyed, not on the grounds, was the The Keg Steakhouse. Alberta is Canada’s largest beef producing province, and their beef production is a significant industry within the economy. While there I wanted to make sure I gave Canadian beef a try and can say that I was thoroughly impressed. The steaks were great, as well as the atmosphere and wait staff.

WHAT TO PACK

The great thing about the Calgary Stampede is all the activity is centralized in one location at Stampede Park. However, the park is giant to host all that activity, so comfortable shoes are a must as there is a lot of walking involved. Also, I would be sure to pack a lightweight, waterproof jacket. The temperatures can be warm in the afternoons (70-90 degrees F). However, it significantly cools down in the evenings, or if there is any sort of afternoon showers.

If you appreciate western heritage and lots of activity and excitement, I can guarantee you a good time at the Calgary Stampede. The Canadians I met were gracious and welcoming, and the show they put on every July is truly worthy of any travelers “bucket list”.

Sculpting a Life in Texas

“I am not that interesting,” Sue said, as she fed her seven-year-old wild hog a set of orange Peanut Butter Crackers.

The hog - named Bucky - almost wags its tail as if it were a dog inside a large boar’s body. “I like to sleep late, work hard, and spend time with family; that’s pretty much it.”

But Sue Atkinson is probably one of the most interesting people you can ever meet. Locals describe her as dependable, trustworthy, and a friend to everyone. When she walks into the coffee shop in the morning, it’s clear that the cattle queen of the county has arrived. She knows every cowboy by name, asks how their hay is coming along, asks how the kids are doing, and greets everyone with a smile and a hug. She never meets a stranger and is one of agriculture’s strongest supporters.

Sue Atkinson and her family operate -C- Red Brangus Cattle. Beginning in 2002, -C- started out with the goal of finding a show heifer for Sue’s daughter.

“-C- started when Charolotte was in junior high,” Sue said. “We bought one heifer just to get her through FFA – never meaning to become breeders. It was just for school projects and then we were going to be done. It didn’t happen that way. We got hooked. The income made from breeding and selling those Red Brangus put Charolotte through college and made a business for us.”

Sue registers and transports cattle, frequently works with clients, and routinely drives a tractor and trailer – skills she learned thanks to her husband, Charles.

“I didn’t know how to drive a tractor or pull a trailer before we married,” Sue laughs. “My sister-in-law taught me to pull a trailer and to back one up. I have learned all of this through Charles and on my own.”

The Atkinsons are multi-generational farmers and ranchers; however, Sue has not always been involved in agriculture. Growing up in Boyce, Louisiana, Sue never had more than a few pets. Then Sue married into a role 60 | Ranch House Journal

that instantly transformed her into a dynamic agriculturist working in a male-dominated industry: cattle breeding.

“I wasn’t involved in agriculture until I married Charles in 1982,” Sue said.

“I grew up in the country, playing in the swamps and in the hills. Back then, I had no more than maybe five pets.

I just love what we do. It’s hard work, seven days a week. When we work, we work. When we can’t – such as if there is rain and we can’t work with the cattle – we enjoy that too.”

Sue’s role for -C- is slightly ambiguous on the outside, but noticeably important for success on the inside. “I am the gopher around here,” Sue said, slightly grinning. “I do what needs to be done and what will need to be done. When business gets busy, you will never see me leave. Though, I will admit, being self-employed allows me to take a break when I need to,” she said with a laugh.

Her self-proclaimed title as the company’s “gopher” demands more respect than it may seem. Containing numerous duties and beneficial helping hands, Sue is the glue that keeps the family cattle breeding business together.

Moreover, Sue likes to ensure a positive and productive process for clients interested in purchasing cattle.

“We help clients through the whole process of buying, raising, breeding, showing and selling cattle,” Sue said.

“There is no dumb question; we have heard it all. We love to support our clients every step of the way.”

However, Sue’s role for -C- extends past clients and customers; Sue’s hard work impacts her daughter, granddaughters, and even female agriculturists. “I know my actions and hard work set an example for my daughter and granddaughters,” Sue said. “I know I am a role model for them, and if this is the direction they want to go, it’s always here for them.”

Just like Sue’s family knows not to be intimidated, even if the industry they want to pursue is male-dominated, Sue

believes female agriculturists should not hesitate to pursue the industry they desire. “My advice to female agriculturists,” Sue said, “is to always hang in there, take things in stride, to not take anything personally, and just to keep working at it. Earn your respect.”

AN UNUSUAL BRAND OF ART Just like Sue’s hard work surely does not go unnoticed, her fun spirit does not either. Going down her rural highway during the holiday season, members of the community witness firsthand Sue’s personality and artistic work. Near the Atkinson ranch, Sue enjoys spray-painting and designing hay bale sculptures for the community to enjoy.

“I have done the hay bale sculptures for four years,” Sue said. “I started in my yard for two years - which is off the road - but when friends or family would see them they would beg me to put them by the highway. I can do pretty well with a spray can, but anything on paper, forget it!”

That is Sue: greatly humble, noticeably comical, overall hardworking. She does not tolerate idleness; yet, she absolutely encourages relaxation. She treats animals and people of the community like family members. Regardless of how many times she insists that she is uninteresting, anyone can tell through her sweat-induced labor and humorous personality that she is anything but uninteresting.

“I have never had a problem with this industry treating me differently or unequally,” Sue said. “I have worked hard just like the men. I have been hired out as a cowgirl just like the guys are. I have never had a problem with it. I have never been disrespected as far as my knowledge in this industry. It may be different in other parts of the country, but where I am from, it’s been very accepting. I love it. I love working with these people.”

Extreme Bow Hunting:

Tales from the Quiver

South Texas outdoorsman and 6th generation rancher, Kyle Hudgins, details an uncommon sense of adventure and a lifelong love for the sport and the outdoors while achieving the “Grand Slam” of sheep bow-hunting.

Kyle Hudgins is a South Texas native, where he grew up as a working family member on the century-old

J.D. Hudgins ranch, and continues to raise Brahman cattle and high quality F-1 replacements through his Reata Ranch.

Kyle also owns Bayside Boat Barns, a boat storage business in Matagorda County. Born and bred in Bay City, Texas, this husband and father is honest about his beginnings. “When I was in high school, I was the definition of a homebody. I didn’t want to leave the house, much less the county.”

“I got into bow hunting with a friend from high school. I borrowed a bow, and I had my own camouflage clothes,” Kyle reflects. So financially, the barrier to entry to get started was low. “My first hunt I was sitting on a 2x6 I had nailed into a tree. I had bought a protein block and had placed it about where I thought I might want the deer, should there be any, to come up. And as dawn broke, there were eight does about 20 yards away. When it got bright enough to take a shot, I did.

It was a textbook hunt.”

That was the fall of 1989. From then on, he was hooked.

When Hudgins graduated from Texas A&M University, a friend invited him on a Nilgai hunt on King Ranch. In a stroke of luck, as Hudgins and friend were walking into camp, two older gentlemen were on their way out. One of those men was Tom Hoffman, a prolific bow hunter who has been the recipient of multiple hunting honors and commendations.

The two struck up a conversation.

Amidst tall tales about hunting in the mountains of Canada and the plains of Africa, the South Texas homebody found a kindred spirit. Two weeks later Hoffman mailed Hudgins VHS copies of a recent sheep hunt.

Watching those videos sparked a fire, and from there Kyle’s hobby became an obsession.

THE FIRST BIG TRIP The expert at anything was once a novice. This is especially true for Hudgins, as he retells his first major hunting expedition.

“A friend of mine knew a guy in Alaska. As a recent college graduate, the opportunity for what they called a ‘low-cost hunt’ was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” said Kyle with a laugh. The story makes for comedic gold. Two young men dropped off alone in the Alaskan bush for two weeks to hunt Caribou by a rogue bush plane pilot.

“At one point, we really believed we were never going to get out of Alaska.

There were bush planes everywhere, but our guy’s was bright teal. You couldn’t miss it. We’d see a plane go by, hoping it was him, to easily guess it wasn’t.”

They didn’t get a shot at a trophy.

The pilot eventually showed up. And after sleeping in an Alaskan airport for three days, they departed for home.

Only to make an emergency landing in Seattle a few hours later. The date of 66 | Ranch House Journal

their departure: September 11, 2001.

“We rented a car and drove 44 hours back to Houston. But we survived what we dubbed the worst hunt ever. Later that fall, I was watching a hunting show on television and saw a Caribou hunt in Quebec. Knowing that was the experience I wanted, I called the outfitter and booked a hunt.

Taking a leap of faith that this would be a better experience.”

ENTERING THE BIG LEAGUES AND GETTING THE GRAND SLAM

Following the initial experience in Alaska, Hudgins sought a professional outfitter and eventually found a lifelong partnership in Bow Hunting Safari Consultants.

“Bow Hunting Safari Consultants book around the world, and they have global specialists. They stand behind their hunts, and they are genuine specialists in bow hunting expeditions,” said Hudgins of the brand.

“My first hunt with them was a goat hunt,” Kyle reflects. “On my first day, two hours before dark, the guide suggested we go for a quick hunt.

About 40 yards in front of us passes a billy and I took my shot. The guide kept going on and on about how this would be one of the top 5 goats in the world. I thought to myself, ‘man this guy is laying it on thick!’ I thought this was just salesmanship. But after we measured him, it turns out he was number 4 in the world. In terms of records and trophies, he is still probably the highest quality animal I have ever taken.”

After the experience with the goat, Hudgins wanted to go after sheep.

The challenge with hunting he says, is that when you are young and physically able to go on some of these adventures—it is hard to be financially able. As you age, the challenge inverses. That is why the ‘Grand Slam’ of being a bow hunter who takes all

four North American sheep is so hard to achieve.

“The Grand Slam consist of Stone Sheep, Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep, Desert Big Horn and the Dall Sheep,” Kyle explains. “The Dall Sheep is the least expensive of the four to hunt, and in my opinion really the most beautiful,” he said.

“My experience with the Dall Sheep from start to finish was really all about luck.”

“I was sitting on the couch watching TV and eating Cheetos,” he begins, which as story beginnings go is captivating. “I tell you that because to hunt these sheep, you have to be in top physical condition; obviously I wasn’t,” he laughs.

“When my friend and the booking agency called, he tells me there has been a cancellation and if I can get a plane ticket to the Northwest Territories of Canada and be boots on the ground in two weeks the hunt is mine. Two weeks later I was in a helicopter headed into the mountains, and on the first day of the hunt we found my Dall.”

“Of the big four the one I really wanted was the Stone Sheep, and for my 40th birthday I booked that hunt,” Kyle reflects. “It remains one of my favorite hunts to this day. I spent 14 days in Northern British Columbia with a 70 year old wrangler, who I am embarrassed to say outwalked me every day,” Kyle explains with a laugh.

“One day we got rained out, and spent the whole day making pancakes in the tent. After 14 days, I never took an arrow out of the quiver, but it remains one of the top experiences in my life.”

Kyle returned the next year, after the outfitter made good on a promise to bring him back. That hunt took Kyle 11 days to get a shot, but a 13-year old Ram hat the guides had nicknamed ‘Grandpa’ crossed his path and Kyle took him. The sheep had earned that name since it’s very difficult for a Ram to reach age 13. Grandpa had outsmarted the hunters and guides

for years and they had never gotten a shot,” he said.

And with Grandpa, Hudgins became the 63rd person in the world to complete the Ovis Grand Slam with a bow.

CONSERVATION IN MIND In 2019, I anticipate Kyle will become one of fewer than 35 people to have successfully taken all 29 North American Big Game species. But if you ask Kyle what drives him, it isn’t about records or trophies, it’s about the challenge.

“For me, I bow hunt for the same reason why some people run marathons - the excitement. There is nothing like staring down a grizzly bear with nothing but a bow in your hands to really get your adrenaline pumping,” he says.

“Hunters are conservationists. They are the ultimate wildlife protector,” he continues. “We as hunters have to be more involved in the politics of hunting to secure the future of the sport.”

“Be a member of hunting organizations, and pay attention to anti-hunting groups and organizations,” Kyle advises. “The sad thing for me is that I believe hunters and anti-hunters share some common ground and could work together.

But until we as a group can convince people that poaching and hunting are not the same thing, we really have an uphill battle.” Organizations he suggests joining who are doing good work in the field include Pope and Young, SCI, Wild Sheep Foundation, Boone and Crockett Club and the Dallas Safari Club.

Kyle’s great hunting stories are never-ending, like the Grizzly Bear and the Arctic expedition for Polar Bear and stories about hunting in Africa that rival Hemingway. In every story, one is dazzled by his enthusiasm of the 68 | Ranch House Journal

sport and the depth of Kyle’s sense of adventure.

So I ask, “What was your favorite hunt? Your favorite memory in the woods?”

His reply, shoots to the heart of who he is as a person. “When my kids took their first deer.

Man, there was nothing like it,” the voice of a proud father crows. He also talks about taking his kids to Africa for a hunt and to experience a broader world view.

And as he tells another story that deserves a chapter in a book, you realize that the teenage boy who never wanted to leave South Texas has become a man’s man of the world. But his greatest accomplishment, no doubt will be sparking that passion in the next generation of hunting conservationists.

And with a story like his, it’ll catch like wildfire.

Ask most elementary age ranch kids and they’ll agree that making slime is one of their favorite crafting hobbies.

Mollie Cutrer has become an expert slime maker and in this issue’s “Ranch Kid” she shares her favorite recipe for making slime. It’s a great way to pass the time on fall nights when the sun goes down early and you’re stuck inside!

STEP 1

Put in the glue. Mollie says it doesn’t matter how much, just add the amount you want.

STEP 2

Add the activator, which is baking soda and contact solution (saline).

STEP 3

Add in your favorite mix-ins, like glitter, foam balls, beads or food dye.

Now it’s time to start mixing! Grab a spatula and stir the mixture until the slime starts to form together. If your slime is too sticky, add baking soda. If your slime is too runny, add more glue.

HOW TO DEAL WITH A

NEGATIVE REVIEW

I was talking with a client the other day about how their business could really benefit from a Facebook page, and I was shocked when they said, “We have wanted to do Facebook marketing for a while, but the possibility of people leaving a negative review is what is holding us back.”

And that client is not alone. I have heard so many people say they are terrified of getting a 1 star review from some internet troll, and having that ruin the reputation of their business.

As someone who loves to read reviews, I’m here to tell you that there are much worse things than a bad review on the internet, and as long as those negative reviews are handled properly, your business will survive!

Here are some Do’s and Don’ts on how to handle a bad review:

elaborate on their issue, mention what action you are taking to improve or make things right for them, close with a positive note regarding your business. You may also want to include an invitation for the reviewer to contact you personally, like “Please feel free to call or email me at [insert contact info here] so I can help resolve your issue”.

I recommend writing out your response and then emailing it to a trusted friend or co-worker to review before posting it online. The goal is to be polite, and show empathy. No business owner wants to appear like they can’t handle negative feedback, or sound like they are blaming the customer.

1. DON’T GET EMOTIONAL Usually you are not expecting to see a negative review pop up in your Facebook notifications. It can take you by surprise, and make you feel angry and upset, especially when the review is over-exaggerated or has false claims.

Breathe. Take 30 minutes to an hour to process what was written in the review. Our society has an unfortunate subculture of people who feel powerful by writing negative reviews on the internet. Understand that you as the business owner now control how the situation is handled from here.

3. DON’T WAIT TOO LONG TO RESPOND We recommend responding to any negative review within 24 hours of it being posted. That way you have time to gather your thoughts, but also appear to take their feedback seriously.

Most customers who complain just want to be heard and acknowledged.

When you apologize, and explain the issue, you might even change their negative experience into a positive one. Plus this also shows potential customers who are reading reviews, during the pre-purchase research phase, that you take customer service seriously!

2. DO RESPOND TO THE REVIEW Once you’ve taken some time to put all emotions aside, work on writing a response to the review. I recommend writing a personal and original response to each negative review, rather than a canned response. Your response should include an apology, explain or

Before going on my honeymoon, I narrowed our destination down to 3 resorts, and actually read through all of the 1-star reviews first. The resort we ended up going to actually had 520 1-star reviews, but the majority of those bad reviews were clearly people who just wanted to complain. And the management responded personally to every bad review, and did their best to make things right.

5. LASTLY, DON’T BE AFRAID OF REVIEWS, AND DO USE REVIEWS AS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE Online reviews can both help and harm your business, and every successful business is bound to run into a few negative reviews. Don’t be afraid of the possibility of receiving a negative review.

After you have responded to the reviewer both on social media, and personally over email, it is time to look at the issue internally. If you are consistently receiving negative reviews regarding one aspect of your business, then you need to work with your team to make a change for the better. Many times business owners don’t recognize there is a problem until a bad review brings the issue to your attention!

What was the spark that gave you the courage to start Aegerter Marketing Services?

AMS was an idea born in 2000, so we are celebrating our 18th year in business. In the beginning, the connections I made while working for the American Shorthorn Association gave me a base of customers who wanted me to be part of their sales. Things started small and really evolved from there. Today we are a full-service marketing firm, offering everything from a turn-key sales experience where we manage everything from start to sale, and then tailoring packages from clients who want a consultative experience. At the end of the day we went want to help people sell their cattle, and we take pride in placing cattle into the right programs.

You were instrumental in developing showstock.com. Is it true that you are rebranding?

The idea of the Showstock.com came about through a mutual partner in the industry, Kevin Wendt, who had a website that focused on show pig online sales. We took that same model and applied it to cattle. The website is going through rebranding, and will be named AMSOnline.com. We have upgraded the software behind the scenes, and we believe this platform is really going to improve the way livestock are sold online.

How have online sales have changed the way livestock are marketed?

Online sales are an unique opportunity for smaller breeders who might not have the numbers to host an annual production sale. Online sales give them a diverse audience without the overhead. It also brings a unique kind of convenience to buying livestock, where people can buy and trade from the comfort of their living room.

Hannah Craycraft, owner of Rattlesnake Ranch Pecans, is this edition’s featured Ranch House Chef.

Rattlesnake Ranch Pecans, located in Crockett, Texas, offers a variety of delicious local pecans, but Hannah claims this recipe is a show stopper. “I made this pie for my husband when we were dating, and I think it is the reason he decided I was a keeper.”

INGREDIENTS 3 eggs 1/2 cup Bisquick 2 tsp. vanilla extract 1/3 cup butter, melted 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 cup buttermilk 3/4 cup pecan halves

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9” pie pan.

Place pecans on a greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees F for approximately 4-5 minutes, or just until they become aromatic. Watch them closely, as they may become scorched easily!

Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl and mix in a stand

mixer, using the paddle attachment, or a hand-held mixer for about a minute.

Pour into pie dish and bake for 40- 50 minutes. Insert a toothpick in the center of the pie to check for complete cooking.

For best taste, allow the pie to cool and fully set for at least 30 minutes.

I like to store mine in the refrigerator and serve cold, but it can stay at room temperature. May be served with whipped cream for an extra touch of flair.

n 1966, a legacy began when Warner Bachman started Bachman Cattle Farms in North Missouri. Truly progressive and ahead of his time, Warner recognized the value that artificial insemination played in producing quality genetics and became the only registered Red Angus operator in North Missouri.

Now over 50 years later, the Bachman Cattle Farm legacy that Warner began has only broadened and Bachman Cattle Farms has garnered a name for itself in quality genetics, both nationally and worldwide.

“I grew up helping with our farming duties, tracking heats, and watching my father A.I. the cattle,” said Scott, Warner’s son. “We did a lot of breeding with Choctaw Chief 373, a herdsire with plenty of history in the Red Angus breed.”

Scott Bachman developed a keen eye for business, working both in the

United States and in the Netherlands in the cable television and technology industry. His keen eye for business and decision making, combined with a strong work ethic, is something he credits from working on the farm as a youngster. In 2004, Scott and his wife Sue returned from the Netherlands and moved to the family farm. After buying out his father, Scott set out to rebuild Bachman Cattle Farms into its current operation producing top-end Red Angus seedstock.

“At first we started with commercial Red Angus females, then investigated and selected the herdsires and donor cows that would help build a new generation of Red Angus seedstock animals,” Scott said. “We now refer to those animals as ‘Bachman Bred’ and are developing our BACH brand.

Initially, we ran about 85 percent Red Angus and 15 percent GelbviehBalancer, but we now only focus on Red Angus seedstock.”

BUILDING THE BACH BRAND In 2010, Scott and Sue purchased their first herdsires from Beiber Red Angus Ranch. In 2014, two Bachman herdsires were offered in the Accelerated Genetics catalog. Since 2014, Bachman Cattle Farms has invested in additional herdsires to form a core group of some of the best Red Angus genetics available.

After evaluating various seedstock providers, Scott selected Bieber Red Angus, Ludvigson Stock Farms, and R.A. Brown Ranch as the foundation of their genetic base.

With the combination of herdsire and donor genetics, Bachman Cattle Farms strive to develop a line of BACH-based progeny that puts BACH cattle in the top-end of maternal and herdsire pedigrees.

Scott has always been a fan of using data and numbers to help make sound business decisions. He’s applied this to his cattle program by Ranch House Journal | 27

Their disposition is unbeatable.” aggressively developing an embryo transfer program that advances their program philosophy and goals of “3P- 75/75/35.” What this means is that Bachman Cattle Farms aims to develop superior progeny that me-et the three P’s of phenotype, power, and performance, in combination with 75% of their seedstock having at least 75% of their EPD base in the top 35% of the breed.

To the Bachmans, it is important that they produce cattle that not only look good and are structurally sound, but also perform well and have the numbers to back it.

According to Scott, BACH bred cattle need to be able to walk the walk and talk the talk.

BACH Mr Mighty Mo F035D is a great example of this formula at work.

At two-years-old, he ranks in the top 5% of 12,489 animals evaluated in the Red Angus registry and 75% of his EPD base is in the top 20% of the breed. He is the first BACH bred herdsire that is CSS certified to 28 | Ranch House Journal

sell internationally and already has a contract to provide semen to a group of Red Angus breeders in Australia.

Even after the initial criteria are met, next, the Bachmans evaluate disposition. Red Angus are typically known for their good disposition, and it’s imperative to the Bachman’s that their cattle continue that tradition.

“We breed and cull hard for disposition,” said Taylor Croy, operational manager at Bachman Cattle Farms. “I can walk out to the bull development pasture, sit on the ground, and feel 100% comfortable taking pictures right next to the bulls.

Their disposition is unbeatable.”

Because North Missouri’s midwest climate is a mixture of hard, cold winters and extremely hot and humid summers, it is important that their cattle can also grow hair efficiently and be able to shed it off in two to four weeks to acclimate to the summer temperatures.

OPERATION PRACTICES

With both a spring and fall calving herd of about 100 head in each group, 80 percent are registered Red Angus while the remaining 20 percent are commercial Red Angus cows that are used as recipient cows in their ET program. At the end of each calving season, almost 92 percent of the progeny are 100 percent Red Angus seedstock calves.

Bachman Cattle Farms also has two cooperator partnerships where BACH embryos are implanted into recip cows and raised elsewhere until weaning. After weaning, Bachman takes possession of the ET calves. This has worked well for their operation and they’ve developed, in relationship with TransOva Genetics, around 600 embryos throughout several years.

Each of their herds is grazed on 10 to 40 acre paddocks and rotated as needed.

“We use a variety of red clovers, ladino cloves, birds food trefoil, alfalfa,

timothy, and orchard grass,” said Scott. “We cut and silage wrap wheat, alfalfa, and some clover-based forages to build mixes in the winter for feed. Because we are raising our own bulls now, they get a heavy forage-based diet to keep them fescue adapted while also targeting a growth of about 3.5 lbs/ day.”

Scott is also thorough in his data-intensive herd health protocol. Each of their calves, bulls, and cows are vaccinated, and all vaccinations and treatments are recorded in their CattleMax software platform. For heifers, the Bachman’s follow the Missouri Show-Me Select protocol.

CONTINUING THE TRADITION It’s no doubt to anyone who’s been a customer of Bachman Cattle Farms that their reputation lives up to the hype. BACH bred cattle have been sold in Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Tennessee, Texas, New Mexico, and California.

With no plans to slow down anytime soon, they are hoping to add an e-commerce tab on their website and gain further access into Australia. The Bachman’s are grateful for their partnership with Ranch House Designs and the role the agency has played in their marketing platform.

“Ranch House Designs helped us develop a branding image – a common look and feelthat sends a consistent message across all our media platforms,” said Scott. “They have been integral to us in the marketing realm.”

At the end of the day, Scott is happy to continue the legacy his father started all those years ago. Today, at 91-years-old, Warner still visits and is involved at the farm each day.

Both avid Christians, Scott and Sue are proud of their faith and hold Christ at the center of their lives and operation. They feel blessed to tend to cattle and provide a great source of protein that feeds His people. Despite some saying they’d never make it as first-generation farmers, Jarrod and Becca Creasy are pressing on to pursue their passion of beef and people with 920 Cattle & Company.

September 20, 2014: Jarrod and Becca Creasy get married, which marks the beginning of 920 Cattle & Company.

ituated in Statesboro, Georgia, 920 Cattle & Company goes beyond just simply raising cattle.

920 Cattle & Company started out in the seedstock business with Brangus and Angus cattle. From there, they began growing to complement the cattle business by providing custom hay work, fence repairs and installations; as well as a meat business where they sell wholesale and retail beef. When an opportunity came to acquire a butcher facility, they took the chance to be able to be hands on through the entire value chain. The meat business caters to both individuals and restaurants across Georgia, who place a high value on locally sourced products on their menus.

Get to know the Creasy’s and you’ll quickly realize two things: they love their work and they love people.

FOR THE LOVE OF PEOPLE Jarrod and Becca are not just focused on the materialistic nature of their operation. They place great emphasis on building relationships with each customer by answering their questions and addressing misconceptions to help them feel comfortable with the meat they are purchasing. Whether it is questions on hormones, GMOs, animal husbandry or how the cattle are fed, they are ready to provide those answers to give customers a transparent look into the company. In fact, 920 Cattle & Company’s motto states: ‘Relationships Matter. Safety Matters. Families Matter.’ Customers are encouraged to visit the farm to see the cattle out in the pasture, see hay being cut and get to know the couple as people. They want visitors walking away feeling like they have new friends

they can trust with providing meat for their home or restaurant.

“We want to make sure those families become our family,” Jarrod said. They will often grill out for visitors because as Becca feels, “relationships can be established over a kitchen table.”

Jarrod and Becca see these relationships and trust as a crucial part in the process of providing customers and restaurants with exactly what they want or need. Each customer can expect to receive a unique, individualized experience throughout the process.

“For us, the first step is determining what their needs are. It is about understanding their concerns and addressing them openly, clearly and factually,” Becca said. “After the trust is established, we can move on to asking about their cooking styles, family sizes Ranch House Journal | 35

or restaurant clientele to build the most ideal package for them.”

However, Jarrod and Becca are taking the process of determining a customer’s needs to a whole new level. They put themselves in the customer’s shoes at different times of the year to help determine what will be in high demand during each season. For example, during football season, 920 Meats is putting together tailgate packages that will include steaks, hamburger patties, sausages, bratwursts, and seasoning packets designed perfectly for tailgate parties and football pre-gaming festivities. Thanksgiving packages and Christmas packages are also in the works to help ease some of the burden of holiday cooking for their customers.

“It’s just recognizing things that are coming up and asking what our consumers are interested in during certain seasons,” Becca said.

FOR THE LOVE OF BEEF It’s not easy being a farmer or rancher in the current agriculture climate, but that is when passion comes into play. The truly passionate ones make it work despite low prices and hard regulations. All of this is especially true for first generation farmers like the Creasy’s who say they “may have only had very little” when they started.

“We had a truck and some cattle, but we didn’t have land. Everyone was telling us we would never get there.

Being told ‘no’ put fuel on the fire for us and made us want it more,” Jarrod said.

Being a first-generation farm means they “have forged through the challenges of owning and operating a business in a highly regulated marketplace that often discourages entry. We have been able to make decisions and not be relegated to following the hierarchal structure of traditional multi-generational farms.

We are more flexible and agile in how we approach business decisions and capture upsides in the marketplace.

The lessons we have learned are very close to our core as we feel every effect of the wins and losses that our business has endured,” Becca shares.

They are passionate about everything they offer within 920 Cattle & Company, but they are also passionate about building a legacy of being generous, kind, hard-working people and having something to show for all of their work. Prior to starting their own operation, Jarrod gained invaluable experience working with other ranches around the country, but ultimately felt called to establishing an entity that best represents the two of them and the legacy they wanted to leave behind. 920 Cattle & Company

is something they can pass on to their 15-month-old daughter Finley if she chooses to follow in their footsteps.

“It’s all about the big picture,” Jarrod said. “We get to take our little girl out there no matter what we’re doing. It’s all about that lifestyle and knowing that, at the end of the day, all of the blood, sweat, joys, risks and effort is something we can rest our hats on.”

Going into this venture, Jarrod and Becca both knew the risks associated with being first generation farmers, which is one reason they diversified what they offer to help mitigate some of the risks. No matter what you do, though, there will be obstacles to face, which Jarrod describes as a ‘deck of 365 cards’ because these obstacles range from labor to pests to land access to regulatory and licensing issues. However, they are living proof that it’s all about how you handle the obstacles. To help alleviate the labor issue, Jarrod and Becca work to create a culture within the company that will recruit and retain the type of employees they want. For them, that looks like competitive compensation and benefits, supporting employees’ interests and involvement in industry organizations and fun perks that have even included tickets to athletic events and concerts.

“We try very intentionally to develop a culture within our business

that people want to work with us, not just for us,” Becca said.

Another obstacle Jarrod and Becca have faced is marketing and promotion. As they began building the brand, they soon recognized the need for some extra guidance with marketing, which is what prompted them to attend the Ranch House Marketing Summit. They left feeling confident in their abilities, but soon realized the scope of what they wanted to accomplish was not going to work if managed by themselves.

“Turning the reins loose with them just made sense because they removed the level of confusion and stress that allowed us to focus on the farm,” Becca said. “It took us a little while to get to that point sadly, but once we were there, we were all in with Ranch House.”

While Ranch House focuses on digital and print advertising for 920 Cattle & Company, Jarrod and Becca focus on doing exactly what they love: raising cattle and growing their businesses. You could write a book on why they love farming and ranching because there is no denying their love for this lifestyle.

“We love the people in this industry,” Becca said. “Whether it’s the people we work with directly or indirectly. These relationships are important and are what we value.”

Jarrod shares that same love for the people, and also has a deep fondness for being able to witness God in his daily work.

“There’s just something about waking up at 3 a.m. to check on a group of cows and finding one that is having trouble calving. After 45 minutes of pulling, you find it nearly lifeless, but then, miraculously, you get to watch the life come back into that calf. It’s just awesome,” Jarrod said.

“We get to see the good Lord himself and Mother Nature work in ways that are just indescribable.”

BUCKLES AND SPURS ARE FOR COWBOYS Joshua Ownbey Takes Pride in the Handmade Details

Basketball players wear sneakers.

Hunters wear camouflage. Cowboys wear spurs and a belt buckle.

Joshua Ownbey, a Canyon, Texas native, is the man many cowboys trust with their custom pieces. From an early age, Ownbey, watched and picked up skills that would later lead him down the path of building his successful business: Joshua Ownbey Custom Orders.

“The quality of each piece comes from the way it is made. If you look at Adolph Bayer’s work, he forged for years and the longevity of the piece held up over generations, and that is what I want in my work,” he said. “I feel appreciation when I see a cowboy wear my buckle and that I’m good enough for them to want to save-up and invest with me.”

Ownbey is one of the few artists who does everything freehand, so each piece is unique.

“There are not too many who do a whole piece in the forge anymore.

All my silver work is freehand. I don’t have any patterns or templates. By

doing this it is more handmade. It takes more work and more time, but my customers really appreciate that,” said Ownbey.

With 90 percent of his work being custom, he notes that having a strong presence online is a must in today’s world.

“I have more custom orders than anything, and that is how I base my business. Every cowboy today has a smart phone and is on the internet,” Ownbey shared. “They are aware that they can find what they need online.

If someone is in New York they can just search for handmade buckles or spurs, and my website will pop up.”
