t is really hard not to be extremely happy to be in the cattle business right now. We’ve watched as other segments of agriculture had their time in the sunshine and now it’s finally our turn. Maybe we’ve seen the absolute peak of the cycle, but prices are still really good, and predicted to remain there for a while longer. Commercial cattlemen finally have the opportunity to reinvest, rebuild and to lock in genetics and infrastructure that will make their lives easier and more profitable for years to come.

For two decades Circle A has been measuring and selecting for cattle that make us and our customers more money in a commercial production environment.

We select cattle that breed on fescue-based pastures, females that calve annually and are trouble-free, and that wean a good calf. In the feedlot we’ve been measuring and selecting for improved feed efficiency and carcass quality as well. Our cattle will do more on less in the pasture and in the feedyard. Individual Performance

All bulls have been vaccinated, dewormed and fertility tested by Genex. All cattle will be accompanied by proper health certificates for immediate shipment. Certified herd #1718. As we have moved to selling older bulls we have learned how to develop them slower and better. While their weights may be slightly lighter than other producers, they should prove to be more durable and more athletic as a result of their development. All bulls are virgin bulls, unless otherwise indicated.

Red Pedigree Names

Circle A formed the Angus Sire Alliance in 1996 as an exclusive method to progeny test Angus sires for overall profitability. This program identifies sires that are multi-trait performers through comprehensive testing in a real-world commercial environment.

Throughout the catalog, sire names in red have been tested through the Angus Sire Alliance.

Terms of the sale are cash or check on sale day or payment wired on the next business day. Cattle will sell under the standard terms and conditions as recommended by the American Angus Association.

Breeding Soundness Guarantee

Every effort has been made to ensure the bulls offered for sale are fertile. All bulls have undergone a breeding soundness exam and are guaranteed against breeding injury for 90 days from the date of sale. If a replacement is needed, one will be provided depending on availability. If a replacement is not available, credit may be given in the next bull sale, minus the salvage value and breeding use fee of the injured bull. If any injury should occur, please notify Circle A Ranch within the 90 day warranty period and prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage. Heifers are guaranteed bred via ultrasound and are guaranteed bred for 45 days following the sale. If you notice a cycling heifer within 45 days of the sale, have her confirmed open by a licensed veterinarian and contact Circle A within 45 days from sale date.

EPDs Explained

Every sale we have a few customers new to beef cattle production or a few who have just finally become interested in better understanding EPDs. Let this page serve as a brief overview and usage guide for EPDs in our system.

Why are EPDs the best tool we have available?

For years cattlemen have used actual weights as a measuring stick for genetic selection. The problem is actual weights are greatly influenced by the environment. Rainfall, temperature, forage availability, age of dam, and sex of calf all affect weight. Most importantly, weights are influenced by how much feed animals are given. We could easily make every bull in this catalog weigh over 800 pounds at weaning and 1400 pounds at yearling, but the resulting product would be fat bulls with low libido and bad feet. EPDs remove the environmental differences and get at the heart of what we’re looking for, genetic merit.

EPDs not only include the animals adjusted weights, they are calculated on ratios which compare their individuals weights to their contemporaries raised in the same environment. They also take into account the ratios of animals they are related to. Information on the sire, dam, half brothers and sisters help make EPDs much more accurate than the weight of an individual alone.

How to Use EPDs

EPDs are a comparative value. Example: a bull with a 3.0 BW EPD will have calves that on average will weigh 2 pounds more than a bull with a 1.0 BW EPD. EPDs cannot tell you what calves will weigh, again that depends on the environment in which they are raised, the amount of nutrition they receive, the cow that they are bred to, etc… The EPD is the best estimate of their genetic value. These bulls have not had calves, as they do and if the weights of their calves were reported, their EPDs would become more accurate. Obviously, not every calf out of a bull will weigh the same at birth or weaning, there will be a range and the EPD is estimating the average weight.

Expressed in percent of unassisted births. A bull with a 10 should have 2% fewer assisted births than a bull with an 8. Higher number means easier calving. General rule of thumb is an 8 or higher for safe use on heifers.

Weaning Weight (WW)

Expressed in pounds, higher number represents heavier weaning weights.

Yearling Weight (YW)

Expressed in pounds, higher number represents heavier yearling weights.

Milk

Predictor of milking ability of a bull’s daughters. Higher number represents more milk.

Birth Weight (BW)

Expressed in pounds, lower number represents lighter calves at birth. May be possible to get too light as calving ease is really what we are after and birth weight is highly correlated to weaning weight. Calving Ease EPD is a much better predictor then BW EPD.

The Circle A Genetic Evaluation System utilizes the production, reproduction and carcass data gathered across all of Circle A’s Ranches. We believe our profitability selection indexes to be the most accurate in the beef industry in the world. Over the years we have collected more than 160,000 weaning weights and 60,000 carcass records on these animals. This database has allowed us to compute EPDs on all animals for 15 production, carcass and reproduction traits. Using different combinations of those EPDs, we compute Maternal Profit and Terminal Profit indexes that are used to select animals to produce the next generation.

All EPDs and indexes for Circle A Premium Beef Bulls are computed from our proprietary system and are not the same as EPDs and indexes on bulls registered with the American Angus Association.

Feed Intake EPD

The difference between any two sires’ Feed Intake EPDs is the average expected daily feed consumption difference of their steer offspring during the feedlot finishing phase. A lower number reflects less feed required for gain.

Maternal Profit Index

This index uses all of the components of the Terminal Profit Index, but includes Milk, Heifer AI Pregnancy and Cow Stayability EPDs. For those cattlemen retaining heifers, this is an excellent guide to balancing all economically important traits.

Terminal Profit Index

The difference in Terminal Profit Index is the average expected difference in profit of their steer offspring when factoring the costs and revenues associated with increased or decreased birth weight, weaning weight, post-weaning growth, feedlot feed consumption, USDA Yield Grade and USDA Quality Grade. For those retaining calves through feedyard and pricing those animals based on carcass value, this is the best means of genetic selection.

The EPDs calculated on our Circle A Premium Bulls are derived from our own massive and proprietary database. While we make every attempt to put their EPDs on the same scale as EPDs from the American Angus Association so they look familiar, CAPB and Registered bulls EPDs are not directly comparable as they are calculated in different analysis.

“Bulls represent a significant investment and it is important that investment provide you with the most return possible. Rest assured that libido, soundness, and longevity are the goals of the Circle A Angus bull development program. Circle A bulls are developed on a low-starch, high-fiber diet designed to provide enough growth that the bulls are ready to go to work, without getting the bulls fat. The bulls were slowly stepped up on feed, and the “hottest” diet contained less than 25% corn. Using distillers grains as an energy source allows the bulls to be well-grown with much less risk than high grain diets. A large part of the energy in distillers grains is in the form of digestible fiber and fat, virtually eliminating any possibility of acidosis (bloat) and associated feet problems ( founder). Prior to the sale, bulls are gradually transitioned to a diet containing distillers grains and rough hay,

Buying heifers in that volume is fun to watch, and sure makes the sale go fast, but for most people it represents an investment that is just not possible.

To accommodate all buyers, Circle A sells our commercial heifers just five head at a time. Five head may seem small compared to 100 head, but examine the difference five head can make to a small sized herd.

If you’re running 25 or 30 cows, about the average sized cow/calf operation in the Midwest, you still have to own a truck, a trailer, a head catch, feed bunks, hay racks, etc... You have nearly all the overhead costs of operating a 100 cow operation. Your annual expense of adding five more head to your operation is minimal, but your average overhead cost is decreased significantly. The greatest advantage is the added revenue those five head are going to provide next year. At Circle A Feeders our average price paid for calves right now is running $1,750 with some exceeding the $2,000 mark. As the markets continue to climb, and looks to remain there for some time to come, five more heifers this year could mean $10,000 more dollars in your pocket next year at marketing time. All markets run in cycles and beef cattle look to be great for two or three years to come.
