Capitalist was a rare combination of longevity, performance, and real-world profitability—a bull that delivered generation after generation. From our own cowherds, we know that losing calves to brisket disease from birth through the yearling stage can create significant financial loss. Pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) scores are among the strongest predictors of an animal’s susceptibility, which is why we have collected more than 10,000 PAP scores within our program.
However, simply taking PAP measurements does not solve the problem. Many ranchers understand that purchasing PAP-tested bulls helps reduce brisket losses, yet most still report losing 3% to 8% of their calves depending on the year. This level of loss is unacceptable.
We believe the most effective long -term strategy to reduce brisket disease is selecting sires based on genomically enhanced EPDs for PAP. Consider how we select for calving ease: choosing bulls with low birth weights is helpful, but selecting bulls with low Birth Weight EPDs is much more reliable because an EPD incorporates far more information.
The same principle applies to PAP. Genomically enhanced PAP EPDs provide a stronger, more dependable prediction of brisket disease risk than raw measurements alone.
Key points to regarding PAP and PAP EPDs:
• We have taken 10,000+ PAP scores (all by Dr. Tim Holt).
• PAP is 30% heritable.
• The PAP EPDs reported were calculated by Zoetis. They include information related to the genomics of the bulls. This increases the accuracy of the prediction, even without a PAP test.
• Selecting bulls using the PAP EPD is FAR more accurate than simply using the PAP scores.
• Herds that have significant brisket disease should use the lowest PAP EPD bulls.

OUR STAR SYSTEM: EXPLAINED
ACCURACY: The sire’s level of accuracy is determined by the number of progeny that have been evaluated in the Leachman System.

FEED:GAIN: Difference in the amount of feed a bull's progeny will consume to produce one pound of gain.
Example: A -0.50 F:G EPD means this animal's progeny will consume 1/2 pound less feed per pound of gain than would progeny of a 0.00 F:G EPD sire.
FEED INTAKE: Difference in feed consumption of each of a bull's progeny in a 112 day feeding period.
Example: A steer whose sire has a -100 Intake EPD will eat 100 pounds less feed in 112 days than one whose sire had a zero Intake EPD.

Heat detect & AI days 0 to 3. Insert CIDR + GnRH to nonresponders, heat detect & AI days 9 to 12. TAI with GnRH non-responders 72 - 84 hr after PG and CIDR removal. Protocol may be used in heifers.
Perform first TAI 66 ± 2 hr after PG in estrous cows. Second TAI with GnRH only in non-estrous cows.
