As I get older I am constantly reminded of our many blessings. This summer I was challenged with the discovery of renal cancer and the removal of a kidney. The surgery was a great success, but the tumor had made its way into the renal vein giving a small chance of recurrence and therefore I am starting a year of immunotherapy treatments to lower that threat. Jacqui, Luke, and Mark have really stepped up and I have relied heavily on them this summer. I am very optimistic about my future, and am extremely proud of the boys for taking care of the ranch this summer. Ultimately, we know that God is in control and that is the real blessing!
I don’t know if it is luck or skill, but I feel that our cowherd and breeding program are at an elite level. When I took over management of this herd in the early 1990’s the Hereford breed was lost after years of chasing frame size at the expense of many of the best Hereford traits. By the early 2000’s it had became crystal clear to me that the only way for the breed to survive and thrive was to dial in on the positive traits that are natural to Hereford cattle while eliminating the functional problems that had been allowed to get out of hand. I am proud of the Hereford breed in general, and I am extremely proud of the cowherd that we have built at Indian Mound Ranch. With our zero-tolerance culling and selection of cattle to move us forward, I think our herd is one of the most functional you can find anywhere. I encourage anyone that has time to come and tour our herd and see the pigmented, good eyed cows with tight and level udders that breed in a short 45-day window each year.
Beyond our tough rules we are trying to raise cattle with a balance of traits demanded by the industry. We are well above the breed average when it comes to calving ease, our cattle are moderate in growth to fit the semi-arid conditions in our area, and our carcass traits are trending upward. Our customers are producing top of the market Hereford, black baldy and red baldy calves.
If you have any questions about our cattle or our unique breeding program, please reach out by phone, text or email, I am happy to answer your questions.
If you can make it in the evening before the sale, we will have tenderloin sandwiches available at the sale barn so you can look at cattle, fellowship, and enjoy the meal. We look forward to seeing you soon.
Sincerely,
Lee Haygood

The Indian Mound Ranch Bull Selection Categories
There is so much data to sort through when making your bull selections we have built five categories to make your job easier. Below you will see each category and the explanation of how bulls qualify. Some bulls excel in multiple categories, but you can make sure they check the boxes that you need in your herd.
IMR EASY CALVER: The bulls in this category should be easy calving for cows and light enough birthweight to use on heifers.
• CE EPD (Calving Ease Direct) must be a minimum of double the breed average.
• BW EPD (Birth Weight) must be below breed average.
• MCE EPD (Mature Cow Weight) must be above breed average.
IMR LOW INPUT SPECIALIST: The bulls in this category have an above average DMI EPD (Dry Matter Intake), meaning they should be more efficient and have a lower daily consumption of feed to gain a pound when compared to the average of the Hereford breed. The MCW EPD (Mature Cow Weight) on these bulls is below the breed average and that coupled with below breed average YW EPD (Yearling Weight) means that the daughters of these bulls should be smaller mature size and weight compared to the breed average.
• CE EPD (Calving Ease Direct) must be above breed average.
• YW EPD (Yearling Weight) must be below breed average.
• DMI (Dry Matter Intake) must be below breed average.
• MM EPD (Maternal Milk) must be below breed average.
• MCW (Mature Cow Weight) must be below breed average.
IMR HIGH GROWTH: The bulls in this category should produce calves with larger weaning and yearling weights than the breed average.
• WW EPD (Weaning Weight) must be above breed average.
• YW EPD (Yearling Weight) must be above breed average.
IMR CARCASS MAKER: These bulls have a combination of traits that predict higher carcass value.
• CW EPD (Carcass Weight) must be above breed average.
• REA EPD (Ribeye Area) must be above breed average.
• MARB EPD (Marbling) must be above breed average.
• CHB$ (Certified Hereford Beef Index) must be above breed average.
IMR COWHERD BUILDER: This category should identify bulls that will produce daughters with higher fertility, more longevity, tighter udders, and smaller teat size.
• SCF EPD (Sustained Cow Fertility) must be above breed average.
• UDDR EPD (Udder Suspension) must be above breed average.
• TEAT EPD (Teat Size) must be above breed average.

• 2092K represents the best pedigree we can build and could be described as the “Indian Mound Ranch Program.” She is marked great, feminine and attractive. Her dam is our great 3007A cow that has anchored our embryo program along with her dam, 1014Y. Add in our awesome herd sire, 8099F, and you have the best cards in the deck! Her first calf is a heifer that we are equally excited about. Bull calf, Calved: 9/6/25, Sired by HH Advance 2123K.

• 8099F is one of the most complete herd bulls that we have bred and had the fortune to use in our herd. He is straight Line 1 and although we bid aggressively to try and buy his sire, HH Advance 5047C ET, at Holden’s, we instead bought semen and flushed our great HH Advance 396N daughter, 828U, and produced this great sire. Trait by trait he has proven himself as his progeny have moderate birthweights, good growth, moderate mature frame size, excellent fleshing ability, heavy pigmentation, excellent maternal traits and udder quality. The Hereford breed could greatly benefit from 8099F, and in our herd he is a major genetic building block for our future!
• 0117H is a powerful, herd bull who has proven himself with both sale topping sons and beautiful daughters in our herd. His sire was a total game changer in terms of udder quality and highly productive daughters that fill our herd. His dam, K5 8050U Miss Advance 1014Y, is the modern foundation cow here at IMR with her genetics spread throughout our herd. You put these two powerhouses in one pedigree and this is the result, and I will assure you 0117H is as good as his genetics predicted. This bull is sound, fertile and easy keeping and maybe the best-looking bull we have raised. Just like his sire, 710E, and 8099F we are using 0117H heavily to build our future.

We chose 2183 for a combination of reasons in the Harrell Hereford Ranch 2023 sale. His sire is proving to be a game changing carcass sire for the Harrell’s and we wanted to add him to our herd. His dam is a daughter of H5 9131 Domino 2185 that we previously used as an A.I. sire, with sons topping our 2020 production sale. We wanted 2185 to be in the pedigree of our selection and 2183 lined everything up perfectly. Still proving himself in our herd, but you will like this first selection of sons in the sale. 2183 is moderate in size, heavily muscled and extremely easy keeping and that fits our program.
This will be the second set of 169J sons that you will see in our polled division. We chose 169J in the NJW sale with the cowherd in mind. On the bottom of his pedigree you get both Sensation and Homegrown 8Y which are two of the strongest maternal sires in the breed. From the top side of his pedigree you get the muscle and power that the 169J sons bring to the table. This spring we calved our first 169J daughters and they have the udders that you would expect. We will keep many daughters in our herd.
