Dear Cattlemen, We are very excited about the 8th Annual Oliver Bull and Female Sale. This will be the first sale at the farm with an expanded offering that includes service age bulls and more bred cows. You have three options to bid. You can use the internet with LiveAuctions.tv, phone, or come in person. Join us Friday night before for some great BBQ and speakers. These are true grass cattle ideal for a low-input management system. They thrive in this environment, and have done so all over the country, from Montana to Georgia and from the Dakotas to Texas.

Hope your with us on October 8th.

Dear Friends, We would like to welcome everyone to our 8th Annual Bull and Female sale. I’m proud to say it will be our first sale here at the farm. We look forward to having everyone on site to see the cattle on pasture. We are especially excited about this offering. We have a nice selection from across the entire herd. The Bulls are in great shape and are ready to go to work for you. The cows and bred heifers are healthy and will begin calving in early to mid-December. As you walk among the bulls and females you will appreciate their docility and clean appearance this time of year. I would like give a big thank you to those whom I could not pull this off without their help. Chris Throne, Bill Martin, Charles Andrews, Ken Brubaker, Spen, Bridgett, Gwen, Ginn and Martha Jo (momma), Gerald and Penny Bowie, Jeff Link, Morgan Marlowe and Chef Jason Woods. I would like to also thank a few notable breeders who will be in attendance Friday night for some informal discussions. Mr. Mark Hannon of Happy Cattle Company, Mr. Dan Glenn of Deep Grass Graziers and Eddie Draper of Wye Plantation. Thank you, gentlemen. If I can be of assistance to you on sale day, or prior to, please don’t hesitate to reach me. Thank you for supporting our program.

Spencer Oliver

Another son of “41” by the $14,500 “Clarkson of Wye”. He blends “Favour” and the great Wye Path finder “6767” and the “41” cow. His influence can be found throughout the offering and you will find many calves that are linebred to this sire and his dam. O Miss 97-41-281 She is the product of a son-dam mating. Sired by “97” and a direct daughter of “41”. She demonstrates the power in this gene pool and the ability for it to be line bred for consistency and prepotency.

O Mr 97-120-234 He is the “heir apparent” to the “97” lin eage and now resides at Happy Cattle Co in TX. Watch for more from this elite Sire.

O Mr Banjo 41-147 Logo

2 The “Art” of Linebreeding

He is a direct son of the “41” Matri arch and by the well known female producer, “Banjo of Wye”. His influ ence sells throughout the offering as the Grandsire of many and many are linebred to him.

Mr Spen 128-147-330 Son of “147” O Mr 120-147-410 Son of “147”

O Mr Casey 41-97

The “41” cow and her full sister “40” have been the foundation in the Oliver pro gram. She is the dam of Herd Sires “97” and “147”. She has a progeny WR 12@110 on a 373-day calving interval. She is a daughter of the $28,000 Alap of Wye.

The Impact of Great Cows

O Miss Alap L 2246-41

To many, these mean “convenience traits”, but we call them essential traits to profitability. At Bar O, a cow is expected to breed, raise a calf on her milk and grass and wean that calf to at least 50% of her body weight and breed back. She needs to do that on grass, hay and minerals in a natural low-input management module. We believe there is a form to function that includes a Bonsmarian angular cow wedge. We want our cows to be easy fleshing, sound uddered, sound footed with the intelligence and instinct to raise that calf and protect it. She needs to convert grass to milk for the calf and do it every year not every other year.

We want to express our sincere Thanks for your confidence in our program. We are humbled by the good reports we receive.

Going Forward Our cattle industry has become global within our own borders. In order to be competitive, we must utilize tools and genetics that are proven to work in a low-input paradigm at optimum levels. We need to be cost efficient, rather than chase the trends of high growth and high carcass that don’t last over time. We must look at the long-term with optimum results. Many producers only look at big weaning weights as their goal, but what did it cost to get there? If we in crease weaning weights by 50 pounds but had to increase cow size by 100 pounds and input costs by $100 per head – what did we really gain?

Grass Finishing

Mother Nature

While we have not done this on a grand scale, many of our customers have with success. Our efficiency genet ics in a low-input grass management system make them ideal to be utilized for this marketing opportunity.

Oliver Angus -

The Bar O Brand Our Practice - Our Philosophy Line Breeding

High growth genetics are proven to be antagonistic to function on grass . That is why we strive for optimum performance that makes us money on the bottom-line. Our cattle are designed to help the cow/calf producer not fit into the pocket of the packer’s profits.

Docility is a trait that is a product of pedigree and environment. We provide a calm easy environment to our cattle. We don’t chase them and smack them with whips. If we find a problem we eliminate it and only pass it on to the sale barn.

Oliver uses the practice of line breeding to concentrate the germ plasm of exceptional individuals to improve the entire program. The”41” cow was proven to be a superior cow through her phenotype and production. Her two sons “97” and “147” proved to be superior bulls. Utilizing those two bulls together in the herd concen trated the power in the blood of the”41” cow throughout the program. Our goal is consistency and sustain ability in the whole herd, not single trait selection for the short term. Line Breeding helps us do that.

Docility

We are excited that our genetics are working in many different environments across the country in positive ways. Our genetics can be found in “hard grass”, “wet grass” and fescue in GA, AL, NC, TX, OK, TN, TX, OK, WY, MT, ND, SD, PA, NY, VA and NE. Rest assured they will work in yours too.

Maternal Efficiency and Function

Repeat Customers

Longevity Many give lip service to this trait, but their brand of longevity fits into the latest trend or EPD Profile. At Oliver Bar O we truly value our “granny” cows and put them on a pedestal as they are the foundation of the future.

The late, Ed Oliver, used to say “you have to have patience” – you’re dealing with Mother Nature and positive changes take time – Her Time. Generations need time to develop and prove themselves. The “bull of the month” club of selection works antagonistically to results with Mother Nature. Breeding for consistency of kind and sustainability is more difficult than quick change that is not long-lasting.
