Over the past few years, Beef on Dairy has been steadily building steam across our industry and shows no sign of slowing down. Recently, there has been a steady push within dairy farms to improve the value of the calves out of the mid- and lower-tier cow within a milking herd. For those upper-end cows, there has always been a clear and profitable path: use high end semen from the world’s top dairy bulls and generate your own replacements to replenish the female base. Many progressive minded dairy producers started looking for alternatives to make the mid- to lower- level cows more profitable and increase their efficiency in the resulting calves. But, few, if any operations can boast the combination of carcass quality AND efficiency that BRC AI sires offer. Here at BRC, we always strive to stay ahead of the curve and saw an important place for Brahman use in a beef on dairy production system. To aid our Beef on Dairy clients, we created the $BD index in 2021 to help support their decisions of sire selection. In a typical beef on dairy system, producers want to use bulls who supply natural growth on a moderate frame, increase rib-eye area without sacrificing marbling, and most importantly offer calving ease. As the old adage goes, “Heterosis is the only free thing in the cattle business.” We feel, that not only can the unrivaled boost of hybrid vigor from these Brahman sired calves create explosive early growth and a much thriftier, healthier calf crop which is so necessary with early dairy weaning, but just as importantly we feel with the maternal heterosis there will be an increased market for these Brahman sired females as embryo recipients for many operations in the southern United States. The BRC $BD index makes it easy for dairy producers to choose sires to make their calf crop the most profitable. Calving ease is the most heavily weighted, with an adjustment factor to select for added growth at both age intervals without increasing hip height because of Holsteins already elevated frame size and still less impressive average daily gain. From talking to producers, we also factored in a heavy Rib Eye Area adjustment to compliment the traditional dairy cow body type and still maintain the marbling that dairy cattle have been historically good at. From there, we made one last modification to ensure we weren’t taking away too much milking ability to produce the top end recipient females demanded. All in all, the BRC $BD index is a very useful selection tool to navigate through our bull battery to find the perfect choice for dairy producers. The cow that started it all for BRC. 382 came over from Mississippi, raised by Brandon before our marriage. She was initially a half-interest partnership between Brandon and J-S Genetics. Mr. Jeff and Ms. Tammy gave us their half as a wedding present. 382 went on to be a Houston Grand Champion, and is the mother of Boom Shaka Laka. Without their generous gift, we wouldn’t have Boom, or Dutton. She is a cow that has it all: moderate, stout, sound, great udder, and great fertility. “THE HEART OF THE BREEDER” As a college student, Brandon drove from Mississippi State to Maringuin, LA each weekend to work for Jeff Smith to pay for college. This friendship led to 382, and eventually to 21 - the cow of a lifetime.

Brandon would own her 50/50 with the Smith’s. When Rachel and Brandon married, the Smith’s gave us their half of the embryo calf as a wedding present. The rest is history. 382 is currently part of a 3-generation run of Houston Grand Champion Females (382 - 21 - 824). Not long after we married, Mr. Jeff was called to heaven. He was Brandon’s mentor and role model, and this gift he gave us basically gave us the foundation for the “modern” type of Brahman we sought out to breed in the early days of our program. His generosity will always live on through this great cow family.

We asked specifically about Jennessa, since we loved Pittman. John said he still had her, but she was old. He agreed to put her on the deal but we both understood that since she was so old, she may not breed, and we were cool with taking that chance. She is now a cornerstone cow of our program.

Sure, we love a good show. We love seeing all our friends, comparing our cattle to others, showcasing our breeding program, and the spirit of competition when it’s accompanied by good sportsmanship. But what good are a bunch of banners if they don’t work in the real world ranching scene? What good is a champion bull that won’t breed a cow naturally? What good is a champion cow that never raises a calf? Since 2010, BRC has breeder of 13 National / International Grand or Reserve Grand Champions. We’ve also been the breeder of the Grand Champion Female at Houston four of the last five years (2020, 2019, 2017, and 2016). Since 2010, we have been steadily fine tuning and perfecting a dream of championship Brahmans that actually work in the real world. And our goal - a champion Brahman that grades USDA Prime. We believe it can happen.
