BRC may be a new Brahman brand on the block, but Brandon and I are no strangers to the Brahman business.

For four decades, I was an integral part of my beloved grandparent’s Brahman ranch. When Brandon and I married, my grandparents welcomed him with open arms and he spent a decade investing brains and sweat into their brand, soaking up everything. When my daughters were born, Nana and Dadaw gave them each a Brahman heifer to start their herd just like they gave me. It was a chapter of my life well lived.

However, families evolve. In 2019, life took a different turn, leading us to start B.R. Cutrer, Inc. from scratch with a new name and new brand.

We weren’t expecting this change, but we embraced it... just like many of my ancestors were ready for things life put in their path over the last 150 years. When fate calls, you answer. And you answer boldly and courageously.

I was blessed to have a great foundation herd - carrying my “R” shoulder brand - that all started from my grandpa Sloan Williams giving me 1 Brahman heifer as a child. Over the last decade, Brandon and I had been steadily expanding. We added 400 acres of land and purchased large groups of cattle from Locke Division of JD Hudgins, D Bar Ranch, and Southern Cattle Company. These acquisitions put our Brahman numbers to around 200 head of females. Brandon’s breeding gave us Boom Shaka Laka, Noble, Sweetie, and Dutton - cattle that many call “the modern Brahman.”

I’m proud of the new brand we are building, and grateful for the acceptance we have seen. But I’m even more proud of the feedback from our customers. They’re saying how much they enjoy working with us, how well our cattle are doing for them, how we’ve treated them fairly, and how they believe in the progressive things we are doing.

Ultimately, a seedstock breeder can’t make it unless their customers are happy and profitable. That’s our goal. We promise you’ll see a difference when you work with BRC. From Brandon, me, and our girls, we hope you’ll give us a chance to show you that difference.

ELLEN TOM OF TOM BROTHERS SAYS SHE IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE WORST COW ON HER PLACE. With that philosophy, it’s important to have high standards.

Driven by data with a keen eye for conformation, it’s strict criteria she sets for the seedstock they breed.

We couldn’t agree more. That’s why BRC partnered with Ellen and her uncle Phillip to do something really special.

Tom Brothers Ranch has a storied history, dating back to 1835.

Throughout the 185-year history, the Tom family has overcome every challenge they’ve encountered from Indian raids, insect epidemics, The Great Depression, and devastating droughts. It’s grit and inventive thinking that carried them through.

It’s in the Tom blood to be innovative. From the original matriarch Ellen, who took over the ranch in the 1800’s before women were allowed to own land to the Ellen of today, thinking differently is the Tom Family way.

Ellen and her uncle Philip run their cattle on land outside of Campbellton, Texas. The business is focused on raising genetically superior cattle adapted to the hot and humid climates of the Gulf Coast. They market Simmental, SimAngus and Simbrah seedstock, supplying commercial cattlemen with genetics and tools to succeed.

“We’re shooting for problem free cattle that work for our customers,” says Ellen. “We put a lot of emphasis on data collection in our cow herd to make sure only the best are going out to our customers, and breeding their cows.”

They measure everything from birth to ensure they give customers the best data they can and strive to be the best source for Black Simmental genetics in Texas. A true affection for the family is the third of their herd that is Simbrah. In the 1980’s her grandfather bred a base of his own to fulfill the goal Ellen and Philip still carry out to this day — breeding cattle that work for their customers.

“I think one of the best pieces of advice I ever got was to work on the bottom third of your cow herd,” she says. “That really stuck with me, and that’s what I put a lot of focus on, is working on the bottom end, and using the data I collect to find out what my bottom end is, and then work on culling them, or move them into my recip program. That’s really made a big difference to us.”

Ellen and Philip wanted to further develop their Simbrah base, and came to BRC.

Her goal was to fix some of the problems made in the 80’s. Focusing on moderate framed, easy flexing, good hip quality, docility, with growth and carcass traits she set out to source the best genetics of both Brahman and Simmental genetics she could find.

“When we started thinking about that, Brandon and Rachel were the ones that came to mind,” says Ellen. “They’re very performance, commercial, and customer oriented too, and understood the goals I was looking for.”

Ellen likes doing business with people who’ve walked in her boots.

“I personally like buying cattle, or sourcing genetics, from people that work with their own cattle, like us,” says Ellen. “I think that’s why Phillip and I have been successful selling some genetic bulls in the area, because people know that we’re out there every day working with these cattle, so we know them better than anybody. And with Brandon and Rachel, it’s the same thing with them.”

She’s driven by data, but only the kind that produces results for her customers and knew she could find that, and a partner at BRC, Inc. “I appreciate their candid honesty. When I ask them a question, they just tell it to me straight, like it is. I tell them what my goals are, and they find the right bull that is going to do what I want him to do,” she says. “We choose very carefully who we work with for our genetic phase, and the quality of people. Because, I guess the cattle are only going to be as good as the quality of people that you work with.”

The new Simbrah genetics have been well received by Ellen’s customers and it’s gone better than she could have hoped. Their average customer is running 40-100 cows and has a job in town so easy-keepers are a necessity.

“The cattle business is so family oriented, so docility is so important. And when our customers are doing this on the weekends, on their free time, they want to enjoy what they’re doing. We always keep that in mind when we’re selecting our bulls to sell to our customers.”

“Quite a few of our customers like Brahman influence bulls, if they’re keeping females and when we came back to the ranch, we knew we wanted to still incorporate some Brahman influenced cattle in our herd,” says Ellen.

Each year, we bring in the nation’s leading experts on beef cattle genetics, judging, reproduction, and more. Plus, the BRC team shares our own expertise in Brahman cattle management, showing, and marketing.

Sloan Williams has a tradition of giving his grandchildren and great-grand children a heifer from the same calf crop they were born in. This was his gift to Mollie. She is the 2014 National Champion Female, and is one of the few females in our herd that carries the outstanding Liberty line of cattle.

Her dam is one of Sloan’s best cows in his herd and has been a mainstay of success for him for nearly a decade. We love her eye appeal, bone, muscle, and capacity. Mickey Richnow said he would never own a Brahman.

They are too hot, too aggressive he told himself and others. “I just didn’t have time for that,” he says.

When he purchased his registered Angus herd in 2015, he was sure it was the right breed to allow a heavier stocking rate on his limited land, turn a profit and be easy to manage.

When a friend in the rodeo business, Dan Arnold came to him for help when he wanted to switch from bucking bulls to beef production, Mickey knew the Brahman breed was right for him — knowing Dan wouldn’t mind a little extra attitude. Mickey became a student of the breed, studying their market value and advantages to convince Dan to transition to a Brahman cow base.

“I had been arguing that registered cattle values experienced lower price volatility in down markets,” he says. “However, I began to see that Angus cattle, especially in South Central Texas were indeed subject to a high degree of the commercial markets volatility. Brahman cattle however, as well as Braford and other F1 Brahman crosses, seem to hold up value wise much better than Angus cattle.”

Mickey admits his Brahman cattle aren’t hot or dangerous and he has a new-found appreciation for their intelligence and personalities.

Along with his wife Alisha, they hand-raise every cow on their place and maintain a small herd outside of Kendalia, Texas. The genetic base is shifting quickly as they’ve learned to love the new breed. This year they are working to convert the entire operation to Brahman calves with their embryo transfer program. While he maintains a day job in the petroleum business, the cattle are a lifelong passion and one he’s focused will be more than a hobby, but a hopeful (and profitable) retirement plan.

“I have a lot of confidence that Brahman calves will bring much better returns in all market conditions,” says Mickey.

One thing Mickey won’t change his mind on is the quality of his relationships in the Brahman breed.
