Greetings!

The excitement for a set of bulls off this ranch has never been greater and I trust after your first look you’ll understand why. The depth, quality, diversity, and overall function of the herd sires on the forthcoming pages is the result of a measured approach with a clear and definitive goal in mind-Put Shorthorns back in the pastures of the American cowman & woman. How have we accomplished this? Through the creation of trouble free, structurally sound, easy fleshing Shorthorn and Shorthorn Plus cattle. They are not extreme in any one area, but, offer a balanced set of EPD’s with excellence in the traits most closely related to convenience.

In this years offering you will find sons of past sale toppers, furthering the influence and prepotence of our genetics. I’m proud to say that I believe they are outproducing themselves, as they should! In turn, opportunity is afforded to you, the customer, from the standpoint of reaping the benefits of rapid genetic improvement without sacrificing the characteristics that embody our cattle. Many are half brothers, again, further enhancing the consistency of the offering. In addition, you will note more colored bulls in the 2019 offering as compared to years past. Quite frankly, this was by design. The demand for roan and white Shorthorn bulls has never been greater, largely from the commercial sector. It’s apparent to me the desire to produce blue and or red roan females has seen a resurgence. Again, many that don’t know or haven’t been around the cattle would ask...why? I tend to believe the answer is simple. They are that good. Good mothers. Good Feeders. Good Lookin. And they needn’t just be roan to do that, the breed character and genomic diversity Shorthorn provides is proven. As shown in the forthcoming pages, that character and influence can, and is, realized in solid red and black composite cattle as well. Bottom line, they can be any color you so desire, and, in the process, deliver maternal heterosis like none other.

Once again, over half of the offering is considered heifer safe. I take great pride in our ability to have turned what was once a breed issue into a program strength. Shorthorn and ShorthornPlus bulls can be calving ease, and those bearing the JSF are proof. Speaking of a strength, I tend to forget to give credit to the cows that make these bulls. They are the epitome of working cattle, are only getting better, and most importantly, more proven. If you haven’t seen them in person, check out the September episode of The American Rancher featuring Shorthorn cattle. Therein lies ample footage of JSF cows in their working clothes, nursing this set of bulls, on and along the banks of the Sheyenne River in North Dakota. It’s here they earn their keep, and, look good doing it.

ABOUT the BULLS...

These bulls have been raised by good milking, easy fleshing mothers in pastures along the banks of the Sheyenne River Valley system in North Dakota. Starting just east of Cooperstown, ND and running approximately 80 miles South of there to Lisbon, ND, these bulls grow up having to travel for water, forage, and shade. Only the top 25% are retained as bulls. Once weaned, they are fed for optimum, not maximum gain, in large pens free choice hay, on a 52 mCal ration.

This allows the bulls to express their differences genetically but not get overly fat. Once yearling weights and scan data are recorded, the bulls are gradually backed down to a 42 mCal ration prior to turnout and/or delivery.

He didn’t give us the best photo but when I think of great Red composite bulls of his genetic makeup, I wouldn’t make them any different. His dam is our foundation Simmental donor, having landed several herd bulls in the sale over the years that are now working from West Virginia to the hills of the Sheyenne and James River Valley’s. DIRECTIONS

From the South: 1-29N to the HWY 46 Exit (Kindred) and then 50 miles west.

From the West: 5 miles east and ¼ mile north of the Junctions of ND Hwy’s 1 & 46.

From the North: Kathryn Exit off I-94, 20 miles south on County Road 21 (National Scenic Byway).

From the East: I-94 North to the Wilkin County 30/MN 108 Exit north of Fergus Falls, MN. Head west on Wilkin County 30 to US-75 at Wolverton, MN. Go north 1 mile then, west 3 miles to I-29N. Take I-29 north 4 miles to the Hwy 46 Exit (Kindred) and then 50 miles west until you come to the farm along Hwy 46.

GENERAL SALE INFORMATION We are retaining 1/4 semen interest in all bulls sold.

Mailed Bids: Mailed or telephoned bids will be handled in a most confidential manner. If you are unable to attend the sale personally, simply contact a representative of the sale far enough in advance prior to sale day. They will be able to assist you at ringside on sale day.

Terms And Conditions: Terms of the sale are cash. Settlement is to be made with the clerk immediately following the sale and before cattle are removed from the premises.

Billed Accounts: All billed accounts are due within 10 days following the date of the sale. At 10 days, a two percent service charge will be added to the unpaid balance and an additional two percent will be added every 30 days thereafter unless previous arrangements have been made with the owners.

Liability: Each animal will be at the buyer’s risk as soon as sold, but will be cared for by the sellers for a reasonable amount of time. Neither the owners, employees,

auctioneer, sale manager or other affiliated personnel can be responsible for any accidents, but they will make every effort to provide for the safety and comfort of those attending.

Health: Each animal will be represented by a state approved health certificate for interstate shipment. Buyers should make themselves aware of the health requirements for their respective states. All cows tested negative for TB, BVD-PI3 and Johne’s Disease. Cows vaccinated with Bovi-Shield Gold and wormed. Calves have had Bovi-Shield Gold, Vision-7 and Cydectin.
