We sincerely appreciate all of the customers that have purchased from us private treaty and through sales with the Texas Angus Association and other sale venues across the nation over the past 18 years.
Our dedicated staff has done an exceptional job keeping our cattle in good condition and getting them ready for the sale considering the really Jason, Emma & Kimberley Booth brutal heat we had through August and September. I especially want to thank Chris, Ben, Wes and Enrique for all they have done in being dedicated to this task. I also want to thank Robert, Rickey, Nicolas and Jerald for their dedication to the ranch work that gets done behind the scenes. It really does take a team effort every day to make the ranch a success. 2 Bar C has been truly blessed and fortunate to have purchased some of the top seedstock donors from breeders across the nation. We are very appreciative for the many friends we have made with other families that are part of Angus producers across the country. With the completion of our AI/embryo facility in 2017, we have been able to make great strides with the animals we are offering in this inaugural sale and have some of the leading Angus genetics in the pipeline for future sales. We are also very proud of our GrowSafe® partnership with Hereford Feed Yard and the Sanchez family from New Mexico. To be able to survive in the cattle business, we need to pay strict attention to our Angus EPD data and supplement that data with the individual performance and efficiency of bulls and heifers that we are selecting for future generations. For our commercial bull customers that want to achieve the best possible traits in growth and feed conversion performance, this additional data is invaluable. It will make a significant difference in feed cost per pound of gain, which means more dollars in your pocket. It is with great honor that I write the letter for the Inaugural Production Sale of 2 Bar C Angus. This young, yet aggressive program has built South Texas’s largest and most production and performance-oriented Angus program in just a few years. Clyde Sommerlatte and family along with the help of his manager Ben Soto have acquired some of the most elite performance Angus females from some of the most dominant Angus programs across America and have brought them to South Texas to replicate. They are a production-oriented program and collect data from birth to yearling including performance, carcass and feed efficiency data. With their aggressive Embryo Transplant and Artificial Insemination programs they have crossed these genetics with the top A.I. sires from around the world to produce a product that is right for South Texas. Getting into the sale offering, we lead off this inaugural event with an Anticipation daughter that pushes carcass performance to the limit, yet still maintains calving ease and growth. This donor sells open ready to flush along with daughters by Stud and Method. The Lot 2 donor is a curve bending female that has data that puts her in the top of the breed for both calving and growth. Her daughters by Top Ten are what this program is all about, especially Lot 2A. They are curve bending females with elite carcass and sound solid phenotype. The Lot 3 donor is a high marbling Prophet daughter that has an outstanding phenotype and sells bred to the top growth sire Acclaim. She sells with an outstanding daughter of Method. Lots 4 through 10 are yet more high production, high performance Angus females and the Lot 11’s start the elite yearling females with off-the-chart EPD profiles. I really like the balance and eye appeal of the Lot 17 yearling. The sale is deep with bred heifers and some of my favorites are Lots 24 and 25A. There are spring bred donors, fall pairs and yet more yearling heifers at the end of the females. The bull sale is loaded with powerful, performance-oriented bulls that have all the data collected including feed efficiency. I just love the Lot 74A bull. He is massive made, sound and attractive and has an EPD profile second to none. Others that intrigue me are Lots 74B, 79A, 84’s, 96, 116C and 118. GROWSAFE DATA Our breeding program has focused on developing calving-ease genetics with tremendous acceleration in weight gain at weaning and achieving top performance in the feedlot. In 2016 we began putting about 50% of our bulls on a GrowSafe program to collect individual performance data. In 2018 we began putting 100% of our bulls into the program. What is GrowSafe and why is that important for us and you? The GrowSafe program gives us specific individual data on each animal by measuring their daily intake and weight gain. The data gathered allows us and prospective buyers to select more efficient genetic performance. Better feed efficiency puts more dollars in your pocket. While this collection of data adds cost to the developmental process, the true actual data on each animal will allow us and our customers to predict feedlot performance in their calves. This hard data helps to maximize your profitability.

Selection Tools Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE. GROWTH Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. MATERNAL Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. CARCASS The genetic evaluation produces a single set of EPDs for carcass weight, marbling score, Ribeye area and fat thickness. The units of measure are in carcass trait format and analyzed on an age-constant basis. Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

$VALUE INDEXES $Value indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves. The model assumes commercial producers will replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% of their breeding females in each subsequent generation. Traits included are as follows: calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, weaning weight, milk, heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight, claw set and foot angle. Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. Combined Value ($C), expressed in dollars per head, is an index which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and eventually sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid. EPDs directly influencing a combined index are: CED, CEM, WW, YW, Milk, HP, DOC, MW, Angle, Claw, DMI, Marb, CW, RE and Fat.
