Greetings, Welcome to the 2018 Wildberry bull and female offering. This past year has brought a couple changes to the farm. In June Robbie Duis decided to return to the Hereford breed and took a position at a Hereford place in Illinois. Ben Lehman who is in his eighth calving season here has the knowledge and experience for the job and has taken over as the cattle manager. Ben has grown up with the breed and is a Simmental and SimAngus breed advocate. Dean Elder is the new man and joined the crew in October. He is a Long time cattleman with a knowledge that only comes from years of judging and breeding cattle. Do not hesitate to ask either Ben or Dean for any assistance in making selections.

Thank you for taking the time to evaluate the sale cattle. Our goals at Wildberry Farm are simple and straight forward. For nearly forty years we have worked to produce sound and useful breeding stock for both ourselves and our customers. We select our herd sires and bulls we use in Artificial Insemination for their easy fleshing, growth, ease of calving and maternal traits compatible with our Midwest environment. We are committed to providing genetics that will help shape the future of your cattle operation.

As cattle prices continue to fluctuate and margins become tighter, the value of quality breeding stock becomes more important. We have selected and developed these bulls to make a positive impact on your operation. The heifers have been raised right along with our replacement females and a majority will have calves at side sale day. If you are looking to add to your existing cow herd, there is something here that will work.

As always, the bulls carry a first-year breeding season guarantee, will be boarded free of charge until June 1 and delivery is free within the first 200 miles. Your satisfaction remains our top priority, and we appreciate the opportunity to earn your business.

PRICING AND SALE FORMAT

All bulls are base priced at $2,750, all females base priced at $2,000. Bulls will sell first and follow a sale order. Each lot will begin at the base price. If more then one person is interested at that price, the lot will be bid off until one bidder remains. Bulls that do not receive the base bid will be skipped over and offered one more time at the conclusion of the bull sale. Females will sell after the bulls. Heifers will be sold choice and privilege, with the buyer having the option on up to 5 head per winning bid. Please feel free to call with any questions about the format.

PAYMENT

We ask for a fully refundable deposit of 1/3 the price of the bull the day you select the bull. Final payment is due when the bull is delivered or picked up. We expect full payment for females and they should be picked up sale day or shortly after.

EPDS

The EPDs may change from the time the sale catalog is printed until the registrations papers are transferred. The EPDs in the catalog are Spring 2018 numbers.

HERD HEALTH PROGRAM

All bulls & heifers are on a complete health program and will be accompanied by health papers for shipment anywhere in the United States. All cattle have been vaccinated for PI3, BVD, 7-Way, Blackleg, BRVS and Haemophilus and have been poured and treated with Dectomax.

SIGHT UNSEEN PURCHASES

Can’t visit the farm? Call Ben, Dean or Jim. We will select the best bull in your price range. Your satisfaction is guaranteed when the bull is delivered, or we will take him home.

FIRST BREEDING SEASON GUARANTEE

All bulls have passed a complete BSE and semen check. They are fully and unconditionally guaranteed to be as represented by us in terms of fertility and function. If during the first breeding season they fail to be a satisfactory breeder, we will either replace them with a bull of equal value or return the original purchase price.

SEMEN INTEREST

Wildberry Farms retains a 1/3 in-herd semen interest in all bulls sold, unless otherwise noted.

How to Read the Performance Data

BW: Birth Weight, expressed in pounds as a deviation from breed average.

WW: Weaning Weight, expressed in pounds as a deviation from breed average.

YW: Yearling Weight expressed in pounds as a deviation from breed average.

MCE: Maternal Calving Ease, expressed as a % deviation from breed average of two year old daughters unassisted calving.

Milk: Maternal Milk, expressed in pounds as the deviation in calves weaning weight from breed average from dam’s milking ability only.

MWW: Maternal Weaning Weight, expressed in pounds as the total deviation in calves weaning weight from breed average from dam’s milking ability and growth genetics combined.

STAY: Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age.

DOC: Percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile).

CW: Carcass weight, expressed as a % deviation from breed average.

Marb: Deviation in Intramuscular fat from breed average. %IMF: Intramuscular Fat or Marbling, expressed as a score as in deviation from breed average.

REA: Rib eye area expressed as a % deviation from breed average.

Tattoo: The bulls have a permanent I.D. tattooed in both ears that correspond to the alphanumeric ear tags.

Weights and Ratios: Actual BW weight taken within the first 24 hours of calving. The ratios for birth and weaning weights are taken from the ASA using their contemporary groups. The yearling weight and carcass ratios are figured by us in house, with all the Purebreds in one group and all the Percentage bulls in another group. We feel this gives the most easy to read information and shows how the bulls have done relative to their pen mates.

SC: Scrotal Circumference measured in centimeters adjusted for age.

ULTRASOUND CARCASS REA: Adjusted yearling ultrasound rib eye area. %IMF: Adjusted yearling ultrasound for estimated marbling, an indication of quality grade potential.

Back Fat: Measured in hundredths of an inch.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs)

CE: Calving Ease, expressed as a % in deviation from breed average of unassisted calving in two year heifers.

Green Illinois designates bulls safe to use on heifers.

There are two simple, but required components to be successful in the beef genetics business for the long haul. First, offer significant genetic improvement, generation after generation, to help insure the long-term success of commercial customers.

Second, the service before and after the sale is so important, just as important as the cattle themselves. Jim and his crew have been leaders in the genetic improvement business for many years and you just won’t find a nicer and more conscientious group of folks to work with anywhere in this industry. For those reasons and more they have been a successful and important part of the beef business in the mid-west for many years.

If you haven’t been to the farm just north of Hanover Illinois, I encourage you to make the trip. Commitment to the value of heterosis and the resulting profits it offers to customers is important too. Simmental and Angus are the most complimentary of all breed combinations available, both at the cow calf level and for the larger beef industry. The icing on the cake is the extra $100+ per cow per year of profit that comes from the free lunch in heterosis. Combine the right, highly selected breeds then add the hybid vigor profit kick of crossbreeding and so much of the genetic work for commercial cattlemen is done. So, whether you choose the Simmental, Angus or user friendly SimAngus bulls and females at Wildberry, the guesswork is simply taken out. Crossbreed your way to a more profitable future.
