Of all the years we have been preparing animals for sale, which is all of our lives, this year is by far the hardest. Less than two inches this year following on from under half our average last year has made it very trying. By no means are we the only ones in this predicament. It has been very widespread.

What this season has done, is to reinforce the importance of the traits in livestock that are the profit drivers. FERTILITY, STRUCTURE, MEAT QUALITY, CALVING & EASE OF DOING are the ones that spring to mind. Those females that are not easy keeping plain and simply just did not cycle in time to go back in calf.

This year all other jobs have had to take a back seat to feeding and maintaining our herd. In essence, the basics have to be looked after by the cattle themselves.

In all reality, they could not be much more efficient and self sufficient than they are. This is the type of herd we have always striven to keep. Maximum output and efficiency combined with minimum inputs makes the most profit.

Obviously given the season we have had to supplementary feed the bulls for a long period of time. We have at all times sought to balance preserving a long working life and showing their genetic potential.

All of the bulls have been blooded with 3germ for tick fever, and most have been blooded twice to enable maximum protection. As well as this they have been vaccinated with 7in1, Pestiguard and Vibriovax.

Dr Hennie Strydom has inspected and semen tested all lots.

Quantum was to be the top bull in our sale in 2015, but he had a reaction to his Pesti booster and was ill. He had tremendous raw data from his contemporary group, to go with his high indices. He bred exceptionally He has progeny in the top couple of both the bulls and females of the drop. First daughters are just calving now. His dam Dora 8074 is still one of our best, also being the dam of the $42000 sire Rembrandt. She is a model cow, exactly how beef females should be. She has an ideal udder and feet. She is moderate, thick, correct and easy doing.

total of 350 teams were entered in the ANZ Naonal Beef Carcase Challenge section of Beef 2018 Rockhampton. Of these only 10 teams scored aximum points for marbling, with 100% MB 2+ ompliance. Our single entry was one of those. The oyalla team was the ONLY Shorthorn or Shorthorn fluenced pen to achieve this. he Thousand Guineas programme illustrates the mportance of marbling & eating quality to the fure of the Shorthorn breed This is something that annot be taken for granted.

Royalla Tremain M260 was Top Price and John Horne Trophy winner at Dubbo this year, selling for $40000 to Belmore Shorthorns, Naracoorte SA, and Mortons Shorthorns, Kati Kati, NZ. This is the second time in three years that Royalla has won the John Horne Trophy for the Top Price Bull at the Dubbo National Shorthorn Show & Sale.

beef genetics, the Yeoval district produces some of our nations current top sportsmen. Chris Tremain, whose grandparents live next door, was the Sheffield Shield cricketer of the year, and played for the Australian team. Tom Robertson’s (Wallaby) grand parents were also next door. Anthony ‘Tony’ Fountain 27th October 1945 – 22nd January 2018 Tony had a long and typically encouraging business relationship with us, firstly with Marellan then Royalla. We also had a long standing personal friendship stretching over 4 generations of our family.

Since his re-entry into the Shorthorn arena he has been representing and auctioning at our annual on property sale here at Royalla so the podium will be a little empty this year.

Always filled with enthusiasm and great ideas, he was a real ‘people person’ with a deep love of ‘Shorthorns’ and was visibly in his element at a Shorthorn event.

Some of us were privileged to attend his amazing farewell which was such an appropriate celebration of his life.

He will be greatly missed by those who knew him, for a variety of reasons, mostly because he cared for people.

Open Day & Bull Inspection Day Friday 17th August Bulls will be penned from 10am - 4pm 28

Meat Quality continues to be at the forefront of our breeding program. As well as our success at the Jindalee Feedlot Trial and the ANZ National Beef Carcase Competition we also again achieved a Silver Medal for a steer carcase at Sydney Royal. The steer was exhibited by Hurlstone Agricultural High School.

Grand Champion Shorthorn at Beef 2018 Rockhampton, called into final lineup and highest placed British Breed bull in the Interbreed Championship. The comments made by the renowned Interbreed judge, Brett Nobbs, sums up our opinion of the bull. He said Trigger was a bull with wonderful structure and balance with an outstanding carcase, great maturity pattern with a fat coverage ideal for British Breed cattle. He said the bull is just where Shorthorn cattle should be. Breed judge, Darren Childs, made very similar comments. Scanned 6.2.18 in a group of 9 bulls. Top Fleck score 4+. Second IMF at 6.2. (Top IMF of 6.5 was R.Tremain) The other 7 averaged 5.3. We believe IMF raw data in contemporary groups is very meaningful.

SALE CONDITIONS

A Buyers Number System will operate at the sale. All prospective purchasers need to register.

Inspection: Lots will be available for inspection on Friday 17th August from 10am, on Thursday August 30th from 3pm, sale day from 9am, or any other time by appointment.

Accommodation: ROYALLA is 69km from Parkes, 52km from Wellington and 74km from Dubbo. All have plenty of motels. Royal Hotel Yeoval can be booked by calling 02 6846 4003.

Breeding Guarantee: All bulls have been examined for reproductive and structural soundness by Dr Hennie Strydom. All have also been semen tested, giving buyers added security.

Health: All Lots are vaccinated with 7in1, Pestiguard and Vibriovax. All bulls are blooded with 3germ.
