Hello and Welcome!

We would like to welcome everyone to our annual production sale.

2016 has been quite a year in the cattle business. It seems that 2016 has been a year of extremes – whether it be the weather, the markets, or in politics. We spent most of the summer on the edge of a drought, finally receiving moisture in August and September. While it did make pasture management more difficult, the grass got hard early and the calves really packed on the pounds! The set of bulls we have to offer this year is, without question, the strongest group of bulls we’ve ever had on the ranch.

We are incredibly proud of these bulls, the way they’ve developed, and the future in front of them. Our goal is to provide you with genetics that not only make you money, but bulls you’ll be proud to have walking your pasture.

We continue to use the mineral and feed programs developed for us by the nutritionists at Biozyme. The bulls are grown on a forage based ration that allows them to grow at a rate of 3 to 3.5 pounds per day, while still keeping them fresh and not getting overly fat. We’ve been very impressed with their performance to this point – even with the extreme weather we’ve been having, they’ve continued to pack on the pounds and have stayed healthy!

The sale will again be held at the sale facility at Klint & Maralee’s. All cattle will be sold by video, with the bulls and heifers available for viewing within feet of the sale facility. No live animals will be entering the building.

We will have the videos available for viewing on our website (www. prairiehillsgelbvieh.com) and the MMS website (www.mms.bz). Any supplemental sale information will also be posted on these two sites. The animals will be available for viewing beginning at 12PM on Friday, February 10th, and 9AM Saturday, February 11th.

This year the sale will be broadcast on the internet through LiveAuctions.tv.

VIEWING OF SALE CATTLE Bulls and females are available for viewing any time prior to the sale. Cattle will be ready for viewing by 9AM on sale day.

REGISTRATION PAPERS All registration papers on the animals selling are in order and will be transferred to the new owner. Papers will be mailed by the AGA and should be to the new owner in 30-45 days.

VIDEO AUCTION SALE PROCEDURE All animals selling will be penned at the sale facility. The auction will be conducted inside the sale barn at Prairie Hills Gelbvieh. A video of each sale animal will be played on large screen displays as the respective animal sells. Cattle will not come into the sale ring. Please arrive early to view the sale offering.

INSURANCE We will make every effort to manage any bulls left in our care in the same manner we manage our own herd bulls, however we understand that accidents do happen. All animals purchased become the responsibility of the buyer after the purchase. We highly recommend insuring your purchase. Insurance will be available on sale day.

ONLINE VIDEO VIEWING Available on the PHG website (www.prairiehillsgelbvieh. com) and the MMS website (www.mms.bz) 2 weeks prior to the sale.

BREEDING SEASON GUARANTEE All bulls and females are sold as guaranteed breeding animals. We will semen test any bulls left in our care in mid-March. If you haul your purchase home before that date, we encourage you to have a breeding soundness exam completed before that date. Any bull failing a semen test or shown to be a non-breeder will be replaced if possible, or the buyer will received a credit (not to exceed the purchase price of the animal), minus salvage value, towards a purchase next year.

DELIVERY We will deliver all purchases for free within 250 miles of the ranch. We try to coordinate deliveries between multiple buyers so bulls can be delivered efficiently and conveniently to the buyer. We will offer a $50 discount if you haul your purchase home within 1 week of the sale.

FEEDING We will feed all purchases free of charge for 30 days (March 15th). Bulls can be left after this date and fed for $3 per day.

HERD HEALTH Bulls and females have received all appropriate vaccinations and any applicable boosters. All animals have also received Ivomec pour-on prior to sale day.

INTERNATIONAL SALES Prairie Hills Gelbvieh is experienced in transporting animals across the Canadian border and will assist in that transaction. All fees associated with that (brokerage, health testing, etc) are the responsibility of the buyer.

What an exciting bull to lead off our 2017 sale offering! I don’t know if there’s enough words or space to properly describe this guy. A member of our 2017 Denver Pen of 3, he was also our nominee for the Purebred Futurity. Dominator posted an 82 pound birthweight, and then tipped the scales with a 913 weaning weight. His sire is the $29,000 BABR Dominance 4280B bull we purchased from Beastrom Ranch. Dominance was the anchor bull in their reserve champion Pen of Three and we are blown away with his first calf crop. Dominator shows the same softness, fluid movement, and thickness that drew us to his sire. His dam is a 2012 daughter of RWG Final Thrust. The Thrust daughters have been wonderful mothers with near perfect udder confirmation, fertility, and femininity. PHG Dominator D78 is truly a unique individual. He has the thickness, the performance, and masculinity of his sire, coupled with the smoothness and structural soundness of his dam. He’s also no stranger to the champion drive, winning a tough class at the Canadian National show at Agribition in November, and then being slapped as reserve division champion. Dominion has been a member of our show string all fall. These Dominance calves continue to impress us with their softness and structure. This homo black, homo polled son shows a tremendous spread from birth to weaning – 89 to 873 pounds! Mom is an awesome daughter of Post Rock Granite that lands a calf in the top end every year. On 5 calves she carries a 98 birth ratio, and a 103 weaning ratio, and a 111 yearling ratio! Take a look at the performance EPDs! Top 1% for WW, YW, CW, and FPI. We only had 3 bull calves from Dominance this year, 2 of them made the show string, and this guy was the third. He’s definitely no slouch in his own right! With a 78 pound birthweight, he could be used on heifers. Look at the bottom side of his pedigree and he stacks Xavier on Redneck – two bulls that we used for years on heifers. D37’s half sister was our high selling female in last years sale for $5250 to Fladeland Livestock. EPD’s are above breed average in almost every category - including top 15% for marbling. All kinds of potential in this calf!

Since he was 2 months old, this guy has been an absolute stand out in the pasture. He’s consistently been the calf that people have picked out, for his masculinity, thickness, and eye appeal. Yikes needs no introduction, playing a major part in our herd bull battery the last few years, successfully seeing duty on heifers and cows. Denali’s dam is an awesome daughter of Payday that was part of our show string as an open and bred female. Yikes daughters have been awesome performers, and Payday daughters are writing their own page in history, so this guy is going to be a maternal powerhouse as well. EPD’s place him in the top 4% for YW, 5% for Milk, top 10% for TM, top 25% for marbling! Denali will be part of our NWSS Pen of 3.

We feel so strongly about the future of this herd sire candidate that we are selling 50% possession and 50% semen interest. The buyer will receive pasture rights for 2017 breeding season, PHG receives pasture rights for 2018 breeding season, with alternating possession each year thereafter.

Direct D18 is a red son of Yikes with plenty of performance. His mother is the Lady A cow that we purchased from Fladeland Livestock in 2011 after she won the Sweetheart Female futurity at Agribition. She’s a female that everyone picks out in the pasture for her mass and femininity. He’s right between the guard rails for all the performance numbers.

This homo black son of Sucker Punch has all the balance and style of his sire, while carrying the maternal power of his dam. Mama is a daughter of the CVV 57P Prairie Jewel cow that we purchased from the VanderVorst dispersion, and immediately entered our donor program. We haven’t let many of her daughters slip away, which says something about the cow power in this pedigree!

We really swung for the fences with this mating. When you take one of your most exciting sires, and mate him to one of your most proven and predictable cows, the expectations are pretty high. PHG Don Juan D08 is everything we expected, and more. We’ve used Sucker Punch on heifers in the past with great success, but he really clicks when you give him some power. D08 gives you the smoothness, correctness, and look of Sucker, with an 84 pound BW and an 868 WW. PHG U02 needs no introduction, being a lead donor female for PHG, and the dam of PHG Rockin the Bakken Z17, the 2013 Futurity champion. She currently posts a 107 weaning ratio on 6 natural calves. Bluntly put, this is a calf who will make a mark in a big big way. EPD’s have him in the top 3% for WW and TM, 10% for Milk, FPI, 15% for YW, CW, 25% CEM. Homo Black.

Lot 8 is one of those bulls you look at and see a ton of potential. We had this guy originally pegged as part of our show string, but he was just too young to fit our Denver pen. His mom has been an awesome producer, posting a 109 weaning ratio and a 130 IMF ratio.

She also raised PHG Roughneck Z23 that we used in our operation last summer. D93 is no slouch here either, posting an 89 pound BW and then weaning off at a whopping 909 pounds! He might be young, but he’s a good one!

Are you looking for a red bull that gives you an amazing spread between birth and weaning, is homozygous polled, can be used on anything on the ranch, and is an outcross to nearly every pedigree in the US? Here you go! Where do we start? An 80 pound BW, 896 weaning weight, 4.3 ADG while on feed test, and a pedigree full of some of the best cows you’ve never heard of. We had D32 in as part of the show string this fall, but he got kicked out when we decided on a black pen for NWSS. Diesel is a Jackson son that has stuck out all year. He comes to you with an 88 pound birthweight, and a 860 pound weaning weight.
